Archaeologists Find ‘Richly Decorated’ Japanese Weapon Amidst WWII Rubble

A “richly decorated” weapon from Edo-era Japan was discovered in Germany amidst a pile of rubble within a cellar damaged during World War II, according to a statement from the Museum of Prehistory and Early History of the Berlin State Museums and a report by Live Science.

Archaeologists uncovered the sword during an excavation of Molkenmarkt, the largest square in Berlin. They initially believed it to be a military saber, but upon closer inspection, they deduced that it was a wakizashi from the Edo period (1603 to 1868). The museum added that the blade itself may be even older and date back as far as the 16th century. Scientists believe it was brought to Germany sometime in the 1800s as part of a diplomatic mission.

“Who could have imagined that at a time when Japan was isolated and hardly any European travelers came to the country, such a long-used and richly decorated weapon would end up here in Berlin?” Matthias Wemhoff, the museum’s director, marveled.

The sword was discovered in the winter of 2022 by archaeologists working with the Berlin State Office for Monuments to excavate the cellars of residential and commercial buildings in Molkenmarkt. The area was “reduced to rubble” during the war, and in the 1960s was paved over with modernized streets and intersections.

Archaeologists uncovered a plethora of artifacts in addition to the wakizashi, such as bridles, stirrups, curbs, and harnesses for horses which had been discarded near the war’s end. However, the sword stood out as a particularly luxurious and uncommon discovery.

Wakizashi were also known as “backup swords.” They were carried and worn at all times by samurai as an additional weapon in case they needed to do battle in a small room or in close proximity to their target which might restrict their handling of a larger katana.

In the nearly two years since its discovery, scientists have meticulously restored the sword. Through their efforts, they determined that it “was once reserved for dignitaries as a status-related weapon,” Wemhoff explained.

Wemhoff is unsure exactly how the weapon ended up in Germany, but he does have a few theories. “Perhaps the sword was a gift from the Takenouchi Mission in 1862 or the Iwakura Mission, which followed eleven years later, of Japanese ambassadors who visited Europe and the rest of the Western world to build relationships and gather impressions,” he posited. “The spatial proximity of the Molkenmarkt with its surrounding aristocratic palaces to the Berlin Palace suggests this.”

Bonobos’ Iconic Blazer That’s a ‘Great Value’ and ‘Makes You Look Awesome’ Is $100 Off for Labor Day

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

This year’s Labor Day sales are in full swing, with retailers from Walmart to REI to Huckberry and even Lovehoney offering not-to-be-missed discounts. Joining the fray is Bonobos, now giving shoppers a chance to score 25% off some of its most popular styles. Though the clothing company is well-known for its chinos and other high-quality menswear, the spotlight of the sale is on one of its most sought-after pieces—the 100% Italian wool Jetsetter Blazer—and it’s perfect for fall.

The Jetsetter Unconstructed Italian Wool Blazer is a beloved member of many men’s wardrobes, and right now, it’s on sale for $300—$100 off its normal $400 list price. The Jetsetter has earned a 4.3-star rating after 385 reviews, with customers confirming that it’s “well-made” and “makes you look awesome.” It’s currently available in six colorways, comes in slim, athletic, and standard fits, and is offered in sizes from 36S to 48L. Bonobos’ Labor Day sale wraps up on Sept. 3, so make sure to grab your size soon.

The Jetsetter isn’t the most formal blazer out there, but the minimal unconstructed lining of the jacket makes it the perfect smart-casual option in less stuffy settings. Those factors also make this a great blazer for transitional weather, as there’s less fabric and bulk to hold in heat. The fabric itself is 100% wool and the colors are decidedly classic—grays, blues, and black for good measure. It can be worn with everything from polo shirts to T-shirts or even louder button-ups and a tie for a well-balanced look that’s sophisticated with some personality.

“I love this blazer. It’s the perfect unconstructed mix of casual elegance and comfort,” a shopper began. “The texture is a knit that’s fine enough for summer wear but substantial enough for fall and winter as well.” They also highlight the Bright Navy option as “a nice compromise between electric blue and navy,” one that we think is emblematic of Bonobos’ classic yet contemporary approach to menswear.

Another reviewer said that, even at full price, this blazer is an incredible bargain. “I used to buy blazers that were upwards of $1,500,” they wrote, “and this is great value for the money.” They also said that this blazer “gets compliments all the time,” and you can’t really put a price on that kind of positive affirmation.

It won’t take long to wear Bonobos’ Jetsetter Blazer to know that buying it was a good decision, but we’d make that decision ASAP if you want to save $100, because the sale wraps up on Sept. 3.

Walmart Is Selling a $900 Electric Scooter for Just $230, and Shoppers Say It’s ‘Packed’ With Power

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Walmart’s summer discounts have been melting prices on high-ticket items like home gyms, backyard sheds, and even chainsaws. But if you look a little further, you’ll see that Walmart is also the best place online to score a deal on electric bikes and e-scooters, and right now, one of the bestselling models is nearly $700 off.

The iScooter i8L Electric Scooter is currently on sale for $230, a stunning 74% discount on the $900 list price. For less than half the price of a PS5, you get a foldable scooter with a 350-watt motor, 18-mile range, and a top speed of 15.6 mph—something that can replace your car for short rides and add a bit of fun in the process. And, with over 100 five-star ratings, we’re not the only one singing the praises of this “quite exceptional” ride.

iScooter i8L Electric Scooter, $229 (was $900) at Walmart

At first glance, the iScooter i8L looks pretty much the same as every other electric scooter on the market, but there are a few key differences. For one, it feels sturdier to ride thanks to a taller and wider design than other scooters. It also offers great battery performance with 12% kinetic energy recovery while braking and one-touch folding for easy carrying indoors upon arriving at your destination. It’s also equipped with a display panel that shows speed and battery life and has several safety lights in the front and back that ensure visibility when riding in the dark.

One reviewer called this scooter “the perfect travel friend” because it has “quite a long battery life and is rather light and easy to carry.” And those wary of buying an electric scooter, particularly one online at a price this good, will like the 12-month warranty that’s part of what they call the “whole gratification” of owning this scooter.

Another shopper said it was a “power-packed” model with “a robust engine, great speed and long battery life,” particularly for a value option. “For the price,” they continued, “this scooter offers significantly more than first anticipated.”

Riding an iScooter i8L Electric Scooter is a greener way of getting around town that’s exploding in popularity. At this price, it qualifies as a semi-impulsive purchase that promises fun and novelty with a chance for real lifestyle improvement. But this deal surely won’t last long, so if you’re ready to try an electric scooter we’d recommend picking this one up ASAP.

Walmart Is Selling a $272 Outdoor Shed for Just $100, and Shoppers Say It’s ‘The Perfect Size’ for Their Backyards

There’s no better way to maximize valuable garage space than by adding a durable shed to your backyard, particularly one you can have delivered and set up yourself. Thankfully, Walmart’s deals section has been filled with sizable discounts on home products—everything from tool chests to chainsaws and even patio furniture—and now, one of the retailer’s popular backyard sheds has gone down in price by more than half.

The Aiho 5 x 3 Metal Outdoor Storage Shed is available right now for just $100 at Walmart, a stunning 63% off its normal $272 price tag. And while you might be understandably wary of ordering a building off the internet, the 550 five-star ratings should assuage those doubts. Reviewers say that it “actually looks nice” and is both “very sturdy” and the “perfect size” for storing yard tools and the like. It’s also available in a larger 6-by-4-foot size for just $60 more.

Like every shed, at its core, this one is just a box for stuff, but there are many details to like about this shed, including the sloped roof, built-in vents, lockable double doors, and galvanized steel construction with UV-resistant paint that won’t fade. The shed weighs a little over a hundred pounds, but it’s delivered in two boxes that make it much easier to carry and assemble.

Reviewers say that the shed excels in both ease of assembly and final build quality. “The instructions were simple and easy to follow. All the pieces were easy to assemble and the pre-drilled holes fit perfectly,” one reviewer said of their shed, which now stores “lawn furniture and summer sundries” in the off-season.

Another enthusiastic reviewer said that it’s the “best shed for the money” while calling it “sturdy” with doors that open and close smoothly. “We stored several 60-pound sandbags and emergency supplies and it worked perfectly, keeping everything within reach dry and clean.”

The Aiho Metal Outdoor Storage Shed is a simple way to make your backyard more useful that you can conveniently have delivered to your house. A deal this good can’t last forever, so we’d recommend buying one today to get your storage situation settled before winter.

Dietitian Susie Burrell’s verdict on whether skipping breakfast is bad for you

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 3:08 am

To breakfast or not to breakfast?

What was once considered the most important meal of the day is now regularly skipped in favour of a coffee or two, or a fasting regime in which the first meal is pushed back until late morning or even lunchtime.

Then, there are also plenty of people who are simply not hungry in the morning, often as a result of late dinners or treats at night, and as such are not in the habit of starting the day with a substantial meal.

So is it better to eat breakfast hungry or not, are there nutritional implications if you are not the greatest fan of starting the day with a plate of eggs or bowl of cereal and is there any extra merit in fasting for health or metabolism?

READ MORE: The best freezer aisle products to save time and money

Why is breakfast important?

Traditionally breakfast is the meal that breaks the overnight fast, giving metabolism a boost as the day begins, fueling both the brain and the body until the next meal time.

Nutritionally breakfast eaters have been shown to have higher intakes of wholegrains, dietary fibre and B-group vitamins, and dietary intake studies have shown that there are metabolic and blood glucose related benefits associated with eating a higher proportion of calories throughout the first half of the day.

Why is breakfast out of favour?

There are a couple of reasons that breakfast is not considered as important as it once was. Coffee culture has seen many of us replace our toast or cereal with a milky drink, a drink that can contain almost as many calories as a breakfast meal, and as such means we are not always as hungry for food as well.

READ MORE: The cheapest and most nutritious supermarket foods according to a dietitian

The other common reason that we do not wake up hungry after the overnight fast is that many of us eat far too much late at night which shortens the number of hours in which we have not eaten – from an ideal 12 hours overnight without food to as little as 8 hours since our last meal.

This basically means we are still full from the night before. So instead of grabbing a substantial meal of eggs or cereal, we are satisfied with a coffee or even nothing until mid to late morning.

Are there benefits to skipping breakfast?

Nutritionally there are a number of benefits of enjoying a protein and fibre rich meal within an hour or two of waking. Not only will it give your metabolism a boost, but you will have tighter blood glucose control and a higher intake of key nutrients that are important for health long term.

In saying that, on occasion, when you have eaten late the night before, or eaten a lot, there is nothing wrong with skipping breakfast occasionally and waiting until you are genuinely hungry the next day to eat again.

READ MORE: The four denim items one editor would rebuy if she lost them tomorrow

A cropped image of a woman's hand holding a piece of toasted bread with scrambled eggs on top, as she enjoys a healthy breakfast in the morning

The issue is when we then choose to replace a nutritious breakfast with quick and easy, high calorie options such as pastries, muffins, milky coffee, bagels and fried food often picked up at cafes mid to late morning.

What about fasting?

There are a number of different fasting regimes and some people may find that they can keep their weight and calories more tightly controlled by limiting their eating to within eight hours each day and as such readily skip the first meal of the day.

If this works for you, and you do not find yourself excessively hungry throughout the afternoon and evening, there are no standout issues other than the need to ensure you are getting adequate dietary fibre each day.

On the other hand, if skipping breakfast simply means you overeat throughout the afternoon and evening, it may be better to grab a slice of toast or tub of protein yoghurt to enjoy with your morning coffee and embrace the positives a nutritious breakfast does offer.

Thule’s ‘Must-Have’ Roof Storage Box That ‘Fits So Much Stuff’ Is a Rare $150 Off for REI’s Labor Day Sale

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

REI’s Labor Day Sale just went live with thousands of brand-new discounts on everything from camping equipment to bestselling travel gear and even bikes. Some of the most popular deals of the sale, which runs through Sept. 2, are on Thule’s renowned bike racks and car storage accessories, including a 20% price cut on the brand’s top-rated roof box.

The Thule Force XT L Roof Box is just $600 during the sale, a seldom-seen $150 off its normal $750 price tag. It’s earned an impressive 160-plus five-star reviews from shoppers who say it’s a “must-have” for road trips, large families, and any other excursion that requires loads of gear.

This roof box is essentially a locking aerodynamic chamber that securely fastens to the roof rack of a car or SUV. It can hold 450 liters of cargo and up to 165 pounds and opens from the side for easier access. The design touches are useful and safe, from integrated torque indicators that click when properly mounted to adjustable positioning that ensures the box won’t be in the way of trunk doors that open up.

One reviewer who did “a tremendous amount of research” said they were “incredibly happy” with this box. “We chose this model because it is easy to install and take off—and it is every bit as good as the feedback [We read about].” And once installed, “It’s really sensibly designed. Easy, too, to adjust the front/back positioning to ensure full clearance of the SUV’s cargo door.”

Related: Yeti’s ‘Best Cooler’ Is an Ultra-Rare 20% Off, and Shoppers Say It’s the ‘Ultimate Travel Companion’

You can store anything in it, but many reviewers like to use their Force XT L roof boxes for winter activities. “I was hesitant to purchase a $600 roof rack just to haul and store things on my way up the mountains,” one formerly skeptical customer wrote. “But this was a sure investment that made navigating through ever-changing terrain worth it.”

Whether you’re hitting the road for some fall camping or the slopes come winter, the deal on this renowned Thule roof box means it’s time to kit out your car. And speaking of deals, this kind of product is rarely discounted, so we’d recommend pouncing on this sale before it ends on Sept. 2.

Every Single Keen Shoe Is 25% Off or More During REI’s Labor Day Sale—These Are the 4 Styles We’re Picking Up

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

REI’s massive Labor Day sale is in full swing with over 3,500 brand-new markdowns on camping gear, fall clothing, bicycles, and more. Keen Footwear makes up a huge portion of the sale, with every single one of the brand’s 110-plus styles of hiking boots, hiking shoes, sandals, and sneakers, discounted by at least 25% off the normal price until Sept. 2.

Keen’s biggest standout during the REI Labor Day sale is the Targhee IV hiking boot—a new release and the latest iteration of the renowned Targhee boot collection that we haven’t seen on sale before. The fan-favorite high-stack Targhee II hiking shoe is available on sale in three colors, but Keen’s Newport H2 Sandal—donned by fishermen, beach-goers, and comfort lovers alike—is available for less than $100 in a whopping 13 colors. After Men’s Journal browsed through all of Keen’s offerings during the sale, we found four that we’re adding to cart ASAP.

The Targhee IV is the latest flagship hiking boot from Keen’s Targhee series with several awesome upgrades over its predecessor. Keen built this boot with a new type of sole, forgoing traditional cementing for an injected construction that forms a better bond between the upper and the rubber to decrease the delamination rate, or the sole falling off. It’s also built with more recycled materials. Otherwise, it still has the features Keen wearers have come to love over the years, like their wicked durability, fantastic toe, and underfoot protection, and all-day comfort on long trails.

What Shoppers Are Saying: “Best Keen boots yet. Perfect fit and tough quality, and the walking feel is just ruggedly commanding.”

Although it’s two iterations ago, Keen’s Targhee II hiking shoe still has a devout following. Some swear the Targhee II is more comfortable, but they may be on to something—in reality, the heel is slightly higher, giving it more of a robust hiking shoe-type of feel whereas the newer models were designed more in the light of a hiking sneaker. This shoe is still built with premium leather and features Keen’s waterproof membrane, and if comfort is your first priority, it may be worth opting for this older style than the updated models.

What Shoppers Are Saying: “This is my fourth pair of Targhee IIs. I work nearly 80% outside and I wear them every day. They are comfortable, offer great support, are rugged, and stand up to daily grind and abuse. I love them!”

These sandals still sport the brand’s beloved toe bumper, which is perfect for rocky days on the water, and the ribcage design ensures maximum support while ensuring proper drainage. Underneath, razor-siped soles offer a ton of grip, a reassuring quality when dealing with knives and hooks, and they’re designed not to mark up the white deck of a boat.

What Shoppers Are Saying: “This is my fourth pair of Newport sandals…I have a hard time finding shoes that are comfortable and fit right, but Keen sandals always satisfy. They have a supportive footbed and I love the adjustable cords that keep my feet stable while walking.”

The North Face Duffel Bag That Shoppers Call the ‘Perfect Travel Companion’ Is 25% Off for REI’s Labor Day Sale

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

REI’s Labor Day Sale is already in full swing, and there’s no better time to shop for camping gear, outdoor apparel, and even underwear than now. But when it comes to carrying all of that discounted loot, there’s no better choice than The North Face’s shopper-favorite duffel bag, which is 25% off during the sale.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager Duffel Bag in the 62-liter size is just $116 right now, a quarter less than its typical $155 sticker price. It comes in four great colors and has maintained a near-perfect rating after almost 800 reviews, including one that dubbed it the “perfect travel companion.” Crucially, this deal is only for members, but lifetime REI memberships are just $30—which is less than the amount you’ll save on this bag—and they come with incredible perks like free shipping, annual cash-back rewards, and even access to buy and trade used gear.

This highly sought-after duffel is made with two different synthetic materials: 300-denier recycled polyester tarpaulin with TPU laminate and a tougher 840-denier recycled ballistic nylon with a durable water-repellent finish on the bottom. To destroy this bag would take a lot of intentional work, so you won’t have to worry about it getting damaged if you check it on a plane. Along with toughness, utility is the other lodestar, with padded shoulder straps that can turn it into a backpack, side handles to carry the bag away from your body, useful quick-access pockets, and an adjustable divider inside.

One reviewer said that they loved this bag so much that they bought two more. “It looks so stylish, is pretty easy to hold or wear as a backpack, can be used as a plane carry-on, and stacks well with other bags,” adding that the bag is “definitely high quality and sturdy” while also being deceptively spacious.

I did a lot of traveling around while in Italy and being able to carry the bag on my back was so convenient.”

The North Face’s Camp Voyager Duffel is built to last, but this discount will only last until Sept. 2. Don’t miss out on your chance to pick up your next favorite travel bag at a significant discount.

On’s ‘Absolutely Phenomenal’ Running Shoes That ‘Look Good and Wear Well’ Are 25% Off and Selling Fast

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

From neighborhood joggers to marathoners, runners of all skill levels and ambitions need a solid pair of running shoes to reach their potential. Many of On’s running shoes are well-suited for daily runs, but you’ll also find them on the feet of the fashionable in more casual places. They don’t go on sale often, but right now, REI has a 25% discount on one of the brand’s trending pavement pounders.

The On Cloudgo Road Running Shoes are on sale for just $112 right now, a sizable savings off the normal $150 price tag. They’re a great example of what makes On running shoes so beloved—a lightweight and comfortable feel with a good amount of bounce. Over 60 REI reviewers have given these a five-star rating, including one veteran runner who called them “absolutely phenomenal.” They’re still available in sizes 8 to 13 in the Black/Glacier color, but we’re betting that won’t be the case for long.

The secret behind these shoes is the materials, all of which are high-quality and low-weight. There’s the Helion foam that balances responsiveness and comfort, a tailored TPU Speedboard for soft landings and explosive liftoffs, and the eponymous CloudTech cushioning that’s easy on muscles and joints. The styling is sporty without the noise that comes with many colorful models, so it’s well-suited for fans of monochromatic looks and even those seeking comfort in business-casual offices.

One reviewer, who identified themself as a “well-conditioned, 65-year-old athlete with flat feet,” said that this shoe is an “innovative neutral, lightweight trainer with an amazing, comfortable, cushioned ride,” even for those prone to plantar fasciitis. For “easy miles and daily training,” they said, “I highly recommend this outstanding shoe.”

Related: Brooks’ Most Popular Running Shoe That’s Comfortable ‘Right Out of the Box’ Is 29% Off in Over 20 Colors

Another reviewer on his second pair of On running shoes says they wear well but are also fantastic out of the box. “I have a pair of shoes from this brand that are over five years old, and they are so broken-in they fit like socks…but they are durable and comfortable and still hold up.” This new pair, though obviously not quite so worn in, “looks good, wears well and you will feel like you are walking on air.”

Some sizes of these On Cloudgo running shoes are already selling out, so there’s no time to waste. They’re good enough to buy for $150, so for $112, we’d say run—don’t walk—to snag a pair of your own.

It’s not just hand tools, though—one of the best deals you’ll find is on this miniature chainsaw that was recently marked down by more than $200.

The Nexpow 6-Inch Battery Powered Mini Chainsaw is on sale at Walmart for $50, a huge 81% discount on its normal price of $260. This highly portable handheld chainsaw has earned over 600 five-star ratings from Walmart reviewers who say it’s “super easy to handle.”

It includes two rechargeable batteries for up to two hours of runtime, and the chain is pre-installed. It even ships with a bottle of chain oil to keep the tool running smoothly.
