Mijenta’s New Tequila Is the Perfect Bottle for Bourbon Lovers

Mijenta is the latest top-shelf producer to hop on board the trend of cristalino tequila—and it’s entering the space in a decidedly experimental way. Known for its award-winning, additive-free offerings, with a strong focus on sustainability, the brand has crafted its Cristalino using a symphony of oak staves sourced from forests all across the U.S.

An eight month maturation imparts upon the agave spirit a parade of confections, including coconut, maple syrup, and toffee. During that time, the liquid picks up a straw-like hue, as it evolves into a reposado style of tequila. Mijenta’s proprietary filtration process not only removes the coloring, but it also repositions—front and center—some of the vegetal agave notes from the underlying distillate.

“As a result of the meticulous process, our Cristalino possesses the richness of an añejo, drinks like a reposado, and is perfect for cocktails that require a clear spirit,” says Mijenta co-founder Juan Coronado. “As this style continues to grow in popularity, this expression will make an excellent choice for mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts.” Coronado goes on to recommend using it as a base for your next espresso martini.

Mijenta’s team of pro mixologists also developed a cocktail specifically for the new release, called el yerberito. It combines 2.5 ounces of the liquid, stirred over ice, with a bar spoon each of Yellow Chartreuse and dry vermouth, along with a couple of dashes of lavender bitters and a pinch of salt—strained and served up in a martini glass.

If that preparation is too elaborate for your home bar, fret not. The $120 bottle quaffs great on its own, poured neat into a snifter. And a growing number of tequila aficionados are doing just that.

According to the latest data from Nielsen, dollar sales growth of the cristalino style is up 39 percent year over year. It’s an incredible stat when you consider that this nascent category didn’t exist before 2011. Nevertheless, it’s easy to understand the appeal. Since the tequila is cask-aged but enters the bottle as a clear spirit thanks to charcoal filtration, folks who fear brown liquor yet still want to enjoy sweet caramel complexities from the barrel, can have it both ways. If you’re looking to see what all the fuss is about, Mijenta’s latest expression exists as a worthwhile, additive-free springboard from which to dive in.

The link between hormones and weight gain, explained

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 11:03 pm

While there is plenty of talk about hormones, and even hormones and weight gain, what is less clear is the link between the two.

Do all hormones cause weight gain? Or are hormonal changes and weight gain specifically an age-related thing?

What are the signs there could be issues with your hormones, and then, what do you do about it?

If hormones and weight are on your mind, here is everything you need to know.

READ MORE: Dietitian shares her top tips to boost metabolism

Young healthy girl on home scales

What are hormones?

Hormones are chemical messengers that control a number of key functions in the body, including glucose regulation, the reproductive cycle and the sleep/wake cycle.

While hormones are frequently associated with a number of issues in the body, including weight gain, mood and energy, primarily there are a couple of hormones that are directly involved in glucose regulation and fat metabolism.

What is the link between hormones and weight gain?

If weight is on your mind, the key hormone to be considering is insulin. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas when carbohydrate rich foods are consumed and is the central regulator of both glucose and fat metabolism in the body.

Insulin helps to transport glucose molecules into the body’s cells to be used as energy. When insulin is not working as efficiently as it should be, glucose regulation is impacted and you may notice that you are regularly craving sweet food, feel tired and lethargic and may be slowly gaining weight over time.

When insulin is not working well, the body secretes more it, and high insulin levels promote fat storage around the belly. This is why abdominal weight gain may be suggestive of insulin related dysfunction.

While there may be hormonal changes during the forties and fifties for women who are moving through perimenopause and menopause, these are somewhat normal, as oestrogen levels natural decrease. For some women this may result in some weight gain, but the experience tends to be more gradual.

The other key group of hormones that are closely linked to metabolism, and at times weight gain, are the thyroid group of hormones. Thyroid dysfunction may present as extreme fatigue, weight gain and feeling cold, and warrants medical investigation should you be experiencing these symptoms.

What are the signs you could have issues with your hormones?

Any unexplained weight gain, especially rapid weight gain, warrants medical investigation as does unexplained fatigue.

In particular, abdominal weight gain may be specifically suggestive of insulin dysfunction and warrants further glucose testing to determine if you may have insulin resistance which could be making weight loss difficult.

What are the steps you should take to improve your diet and help your hormones?

For hormone-related weight gain, the two key nutrients to pay particular attention to are carbs and protein. If you have a family history of Type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with PCOS or insulin and glucose related issues, reducing your overall intake of carbohydrate and opting for wholegrain and natural sources of carbs in your diet is crucial to help control glucose and insulin levels.

This means processed forms of carbohydrate including white rice, bread, cakes, biscuits and snack food are best avoided, as they result in relatively rapid increases in blood glucose levels, driving insulin release and making fat loss more challenging.

On the other hand, controlled portions of vegetable-based carbs like sweet potato, wholegrain breads and crackers, dairy and fruit are better types of carbohydrate to include in your diet, as they are digested more slowly.

The other important nutrient is protein, found primarily in animal-based foods including lean meat, chicken, fish, dairy and soy-based foods like tofu.

Not only does eating a diet with a higher proportion of protein support satiety and appetite control, but teaming a carbohydrate rich food with a protein rich food helps to keep blood glucose levels more tightly regulated, helping to control insulin and support fat loss.

This means that it is much better to enjoy an egg on toast than just toast with spread, or a salad with tuna, rather than a plain one.

I’ve Sipped Hundreds of Whiskies. This Rare Bottle Is One of the Best I’ve Tasted

Even with the current state of inflation, there are plenty of rewarding things you could acquire with $145,000. A Porsche, perhaps. A well-appointed fishing boat. Maybe even a modest cabin. Alternatively, you could get your hands on a single bottle of whisky from The Balvenie. In 2022, the iconic Speyside Scotch maker unveiled The Balvenie Sixty, its 60-year-old single malt, and with only 71 bottles available globally, it’s both the distillery’s oldest and rarest release to date.

So, even as someone who writes about whisky for a living, it took me more than 18 months to secure a precious pour. But this was a dram that required 60 years worth of patient production. What’s another year-or-so added on top? Turns out, it was well worth the wait.

The liquid in question comes from a solitary cask of exceptional character, found deep in the recesses of a damp, dunnage warehouse. It was wrested from its slumber by Balvenie malt master Kelsey McKechnie, who was taken away by its “autumnal aromas.” It’s robust in body and polished copper in color. McKechnie brought it to bottle at a precise proof of 42.4 percent ABV, where assertive threads of nutmeg and dark roasted espresso could shine bright from first sip firmly through a prolonged finish.

Related: The 15 Best Scotch Whiskies of 2024

New York City-based Scotch enthusiasts like me can find the spirit for sale at Nubeluz, the stylish bar from chef José Andrés atop the Ritz-Carlton NoMad hotel. I was thankfully offered a taste, saving me the cost. After ordering, it arrived at my table with appropriate pageantry: An elegant glass pipette descended into the bottle to delicately relay the juice to my dram.

The whisky’s light hue belied its deep underlying flavors. After sitting in a snifter for a moment or two, a floral bouquet of honeysuckle and lilac lifted towards my nose. Then came a blast of butterscotch, which served as the perfect prelude to the aforementioned elements of espresso, anchoring each sip. Before it faded from the back of the palate, candied ginger and orange zest imprint a parting residue.

Beyond the fleeting beauty of the Scotch itself, the release is presented as a lasting ode to the work of McKechnie’s mentor, David C. Stewart, MBE. The industry icon is celebrating six decades in Scotch, making him Scotland’s longest-serving whisky maker. Whether or not you’re familiar with his work, you can’t be a Scotch drinker today without having sipped his legacy, as it was Stewart who helped pioneer the technique of cask finishing back in the early 1980s.

The Balvenie Sixty is the oldest and rarest expression that the Speyside Scotch producer has ever made.

Courtesy of The Balvenie

“I’ve learned so much from David at work,” says McKechnie. “His mentorship has made a profound impact on me and finding a cask to fit such an incredible character in the distillery’s history is a great honor.”

That honor is bestowed in a specially layered tube casing. It wraps around the hand-blown crystal decanter, etched with personal anecdotes from five decades worth of individuals who influenced Stewart’s unprecedented journey. The sixth decade is represented by the bottle itself, which contains a quote from McKechnie.

It’s unclear how many of those 71 initial bottles even washed up on American shores. I know of two places; there’s Nubeluz, where you’ll pay $6,000 per half ounce pour or $12,000 per one ounce pour, or you can ship up to the Boston Harbor Hotel in its namesake city, where The Balvenie Sixty costs $12,500 for an ounce and a half pour.

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. We update when possible, but deals expire and prices can change. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

If you want a far more accessible sample that honors Stewart’s legacy, The Balvenie DoubleWood is always there for the plucking. The nutty, smooth-sipping 12-year-old single malt is primarily matured in ex-bourbon barrels before transferring to European oak sherry wood. Initially released in 1993, it remains one of the most beloved examples of a finished scotch on shelves today. And at its current suggested retail price, often under $30, you could amass thousands of bottles for less than the cost of a single bottle of The Balvenie 60. Hope you have a large backbar.

What’s the Difference Between an SXS and ATV? Here’s Why You Need to Know

ATV, UTV, SXS, 4WD… The world of off-roading loves its acronyms. This abundance of abbreviations works great in practice, but if you’re new to the scene chances are an explanation is in order on the two main types of four-wheeled vehicles: ATVs and SXSs.

Below we’ll take ‘er from the ground up, giving you a clear definition of each type of vehicle and how to tell them apart. While we’re at it, we’ll also explain the strengths and weaknesses of each variety, why you might choose one over the other, and what kind of rider is best suited to each machine.

What Is an ATV?

ATVs are nimble and narrow, which is great for riding in more technical terrain.

Getty

ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle): Put simply, an ATV is a four-wheeled vehicle that you sit on rather than instraddling the seat with your legs and steering with handlebars, much like a motorcycle. Throttle and braking are also handled similarly to a motorcycle, typically via a handlebar-mounted throttle and a mixture of hand and foot braking. ATVs all have an open cockpit and sit either one or two people.

What Is an SXS?

SXSs will let you explore more remote areas for longer with more gear.

Courtesy Image

SXS (Side-by-Side): A side-by-side is a four-wheeled vehicle that you sit in rather than on, and operate with a steering wheel and foot controls just like a car or truck. These machines include roll cages or full enclosures (as well as seat belts), and seat between 1 and 5 people.

What About UTVs?

UTV (Utility Task Vehicle): UTV and SXS are often used interchangeably, but to be specific, UTVs are side-by-sides specifically designed for work, like hauling large payloads or towing heavy trailers. These vehicles typically include cargo beds for added storage and engines geared for low-town torque rather than outright speed.

Practical Distinctions Between ATVs and SXSs?

Now that we’ve clarified how to quickly tell these two apart (just look for a steering wheel), let’s explore the important practical distinctions between side-by-sides and their ATV cousins. There’s a night-and-day difference between how these two machines handle and perform, so here are the main things to be aware of if you’re in the market for one or the other.

Side-by-Side (SXS): The Good

Side-by-sides are the easiest and most capable way to have fun in the dirt.

Getty

Unless you’ve got a million dollars to spend on a race-spec trophy truck, a side-by-side is by far the coolest and most capable way to get out and hit the dirt. This is arguably the most fun you can have with your clothes on, so here are a few of the biggest arguments in favor of the SXS.

Pro: Improved Safety and Stability

As the name suggests, modern side-by-sides are designed to sit two people side-by-side, and many also include back seats to sit an additional two or three passengers. As such, SXSs tend to be a good bit wider and longer than your typical ATV. This comes with some distinct advantages.

For starters, that longer and wider wheelbase makes side-by-sides feel much more stable and planted than ATVs, particularly when you’re moving along at a faster pace. This is especially true when riding up hills or around corners, as the “sit on top” layout of an ATV makes them feel more prone to rolling or flipping (which they are).

Don’t get us wrong—SXSs are still tall and top-heavy vehicles. We’ve seen quite a few side-by-sides flipped on their roofs over the years, but as a general rule of thumb, an SXS is more forgiving and easier to operate safely. There’s no need to worry about moving your weight around for balance or choosing between a front and rear brake. If you can drive a car, chances are you’ll feel reasonably confident behind the wheel of a side-by-side.

Pro: Better Utility

Side-by-sides are also much better suited to serious work duty, like farming, property management, or even construction. That’s because their longer wheelbases, more powerful engines, and beefier chassis are much more capable for towing and hauling heavy loads.

The first and most obvious point to make here is that utility-focused side-by-sides feature open cargo boxes just like the bed of a pickup truck, giving them more space to haul materials and gear without the need for a trailer. Most of these beds also include a convenient “dump” feature, meaning they can be unlocked and tipped back to drop heavy loads just like a dump truck.

As for towing, full-sized UTVs like the Polaris Ranger and Honda Pioneer offer much higher towing capacities than ATVs. The latest Ranger XD1500 is particularly impressive in this regard with a whopping 3,500 lbs towing capacity—rivaling some midsize pickup trucks.

Pro: Outrageous Performance

On the other end of the side-by-side spectrum, the latest sport-focused machines are blisteringly fast and unbelievably capable in rough terrain, even in stock form. Whether you’re interested in flat-out speed across an open desert or super-technical rock crawling on expert trails, there isn’t much a high-perfomance side-by-side can’t handle.

Consider Can-Am’s latest Maverick R, for example. We had the pleasure of taking one of these turbo-charged, 240 horsepower buggies for a joyride during last year’s Baja 1000, and we’re happy to report seeing speeds over 100 mph on the dash. Combine that with 25-plus inches of silky-smooth suspension travel, and you’ve basically got a miniature trophy truck anyone can run out and buy today.

Pro: Entertainment and Customization

Half the fun of getting a new toy is making it your own. If you’ve ever been to a large 4×4 gathering, you’ll know the off-road community takes this fact more seriously than most. When it comes to customization, side-by-sides reign supreme.

The sky is truly the limit here. Most SXSs come with some kind of Bluetooth audio from the factory, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what’s possible. Whether you want to turn your rig into a squeaky-clean, color-matched custom or a hardcore race buggy that’s built to conquer Baja, the aftermarket has a solution. Bright lights, loud exhausts, 10 speaker sound systems… If you can imagine it, it’s for sale out there somewhere.

Side-By-Side (SXS): The Bad

While the larger chassis and intuitive operation of an SXS clearly has its perks, it ain’t all roses either. The additional size and complexity of a side-by-side comes with a few drawbacks you’ll want to keep in mind.

Con: Performance Ain’t Cheap

Side-by-sides are the clear winner when it comes to capability and refinement, but with added performance comes added cost. Consider Can-Am’s current lineup for example: The brand’s least expensive side-by-side, the Defender, will set you back about $13,000, while their entry-level ATV, the Outlander, comes in well under $7,000.

Both of those rigs are built for basic utility, however, and the difference in price skyrockets if speed is what you’re after. Can-Am’s top-of-the-line sport ATV, the Renegade, is by no means cheap, but it still costs considerably less than a base-model sport side-by-side. You can expect to spend around $20,000 for a Renegade with all the bells and whistles, while that Maverick R we mentioned above can easily lighten your wallet to the tune of $60,000 when fully optioned-out.

Con: Storage and Logistics

Cost aside, there’s another major headache that comes with owning a side-by-side. Because these machines are so much larger than an ATV, hauling one in the bed of a pickup truck is pretty much out of the question.

There are exceptions to the rule here, of course, but for anything other than the smallest UTVs, you’re going to need a trailer to haul it around. It’s also important to note that side-by-side vehicles often weigh well over 2,000 pounds, so you’ll need a pretty rugged trailer and a vehicle that’s powerful enough to pull it.

Finally, you’ll need a big enough place to store everything to keep it out of the weather and safe from theft. If you’ve got a dream garage with room to spare you’re all set, but for many owners this means paying a monthly fee to use a secure “park-a-toy” storage facility.

Con: Fewer Options For Recreation

Another major downside many new side-by-side owners overlook is that their new rigs simply aren’t allowed on a large percentage of recreational trails due to their wide footprint. This varies state-by-state, but most public, off-road riding areas enforce a cutoff of 50 inches wheel-to-wheel for their ATV and dirt bike trails, limiting SXSs to privately owned off-road parks and existing 4×4 routes used by Jeeps and overlanding vehicles.

All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV): The Good

ATVs can be a little softer on the environment than side-by-sides with their narrower, lighter footprint.

Getty

While side-by-sides seem to dominate on paper, there’s still a strong argument to be made for ATVs. These compact off-roaders are still plenty fun and useful in many cases. Here are the main talking points to consider if you’re weighing one over the other.

Pro: ATVs Go Places Side-by-Sides Can’t

As alluded to above, many trail systems across the country aren’t open to side-by-side owners. ATVs, on the other hand, have a much narrower footprint that’s easier on the environment, granting them access to thousands of miles of trails you’ll never get to experience behind the wheel of an SXS.

In addition to regulatory restrictions like these, it’s also worth pointing out that the shorter and narrower wheelbases of ATVs do much better on narrower trail systems. Many tighter, slower turns are simply too sharp for a side-by-side to maneuver around, especially when there are trees and other obstacles lining the sides of the path.

Pro: Bang For Your Buck

We’ve established that an ATV is a much more budget-friendly way to explore off road, but it’s important to emphasize just how affordable these machines can be. Entry-level ATVs like the Kawasaki Brute Force, Honda Fourtrax, and Arctic Cat Alterra all deliver respectable performance and proven reliability while retailing for around $5,000.

If a general purpose off-road machine is what you’re after and you don’t need to haul heavy loads or carry extra passengers, chances are even a base-model ATV may be overkill. Most modern ATVs pack a serious punch when it comes to utility work, as many models can tow well over 1,000 pounds with ease.

Pro: Storage and Transportation

Put simply, just about every ATV on the market can be hauled in the bed of just about any pickup truck. This includes midsize trucks like a Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma, and even applies to short bed models. All you need is a good set of ramps and a few ratchet straps and you’re ready to ride out to the trail.

If off-roading is a family affair for you, hauling multiple ATVs side-by-side in a single trailer is a common practice. The lower weight of an ATV also makes them easier to haul with a smaller pickup, so if you’re working with a base-model four-cylinder rather than a big gnarly diesel, hauling an ATV is well within your towing or payload capacity.

Lastly, the compact dimensions of an ATV take up far less space in the garage than an SXS, making them much easier to store when not in use. Most owners can wedge two or three ATVs into a single garage space, so paying to store them out of the weather is typically a non-issue.

Related: A Few of the Best Places in California to Learn Overland Motorcycle Riding

All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV): The Bad

There’s no denying ATVs are a convenient and cost effective way to explore off-road. They’ve also got their shortcomings. Here’s what we’ve learned from our own experience over the years.

Con: Safety Concerns

All power sports are fun, and they all come with some degree of risk. We wouldn’t have it any other way, but ATVs can be riskier than most, especially compared to side-by-sides.

Because of their shorter wheelbases and top-heavy nature, ATVs are much more prone to body roll when cornering, especially when speed is a factor. This is a non-issue if you’re just putting around your local trails or hauling gear through the backwoods, but in our experience speed is seductive and self-control has its limits.

This increased roll-over hazard is further complicated by the open-air design of an ATV. With no roll-cage to protect you and no seat-belt to keep you strapped in, having your ATV roll on top of you in a crash is an all-too-common occurrence.

Con: The Passenger Experience

Most ATVs are designed to fit a rider up front and a passenger on the back. While many ATVs nowadays include optional back seat rests and other creature comforts for passengers, riding on the back of one for any length of time isn’t particularly enjoyable.

That’s because unlike side-by-sides, which provide passengers the same view, legroom, and support as the driver, being on the back of an ATV means having the back of someone’s head in your face at all times. We’ll also note that passengers tend to prefer having seat belts, grab handles, and the peace of mind of a roll cage—especially when the driver has a need for speed.

Lastly, there’s a comparative lack of creature comforts on most ATVs. Bluetooth audio, fully-enclosed cabs, and even heaters and AC are common equipment on factory side-by-sides nowadays. Some ATVs are offered with accessories like audio or windshields for the driver, but side-by-sides are tough to beat from a comfort standpoint.

So Which Off-Roader Is Right For You?

Both SXSs and ATVs provide ample fun in the dirt. The better choice depends on your specific wants, needs, and budget.

Getty

We’ll be blunt here: If you’ve got the money to spend, room in the garage, and enough areas to ride within striking distance, side-by-sides take the cake by a long shot. They work harder, go faster, and are more fun to drive than anything else in the dirt.

That said, practicality and affordability are both necessary evils for most of us—and, truth be told, side-by-sides aren’t always the best tool for the job. For narrower trails, basic utility, and lighter work (alongside tighter budgets), ATVs are often a better fit—which is why they’re still the weapon of choice for many backcountry hunters, land owners, and casual trail riders.

Rain jackets are often an afterthought until it’s too late, but they’re one of the most useful types of outerwear for spring. Spring rain showers sometimes show up out of nowhere and can really dampen your day, whether you’re trying to enjoy the outdoors or just get around the city. Thankfully, Amazon’s first-ever Big Spring Sale has your back—literally—with discounts on men’s jackets for this exact purpose. And while the deals officially begin on March 20, some are already live, like one of Columbia’s top-selling waterproof jackets.

Right now, Columbia’s Watertight 2 Rain Jacket is on sale for as low as $50—a 44% savings on the original $90 price tag. In the black colorway alone, this jacket has earned more than 3,600 five-star ratings (with thousands more among the 40-plus colors) and currently sits among the top five bestselling rain jackets on Amazon. It’s available in sizes small through 5XL with tall sizes offered as well.

This waterproof jacket is made from Columbia’s Omni-Tech fabric, which sheds water while keeping the inside ventilated. Since heat retention and sweat are typically big problems when wearing rain jackets, having that breathability is an extra-helpful feature. In addition to Columbia’s technical fabric, the Watertight 2 features everything a person needs to brave wet weather: full adjustability in the hood, cuffs, and hemline, and protective zippered hand pockets that’ll keep a phone, keys, and other essentials dry. As a bonus, the jacket is completely collapsible and packs into one of the zippered hand pockets for easy storage and portability.

Shoppers love this Columbia rain jacket for several reasons, but many agree that the most important thing is that it’s really, legitimately waterproof. “I wore this jacket during the NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour and managed to keep my upper body perfectly dry,” a shopper said. “Almost five hours on a bike in the pouring rain and no water got in. I put the hood on my head under the helmet and kept my head dry, too. I highly recommend this jacket.”

Others have commended it for its breathability, a testament to the effectiveness of the Omni-Tech fabric. One shopper even said it kept them dry in the summer heat. “Best rain jacket ever,” they said. “I’ve only had it for the summer months and I don’t sweat in it.” Another shopper agreed, saying, “The fine mesh liner does a great job of keeping the outer layer from making contact with your body, which really helps with ventilation.”

For as low as $50, it’s worth getting a Columbia Watertight 2 Rain Jacket for the sporadic weather that comes with spring. We don’t expect this to sell out, but we’re not sure how long the steep discount will be around. So if you’re ready to get ahead of the wet weather this spring, consider picking up one of these packable jackets to store in your hiking bag, your car, or your desk at work so you can be prepared for anything.

Dietitian Susie Burrell shares her top tips for boosting metabolism

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 4:03 am

Would you say that you had a fast metabolism?

Do you feel hungry regularly? Or, if you exercise more, do you find you can drop a few kilos quickly?

Or, maybe you are noticing that your metabolism is not as good as it once was, and you can no longer eat what ever you like without seeing the consequences on the scales.

READ MORE: Dietitian reveals the telltale sign you’re getting too much caffeine

Close up of sportswoman checking heart rate on smart watch after home workout.

For the average adult, metabolic rate, or the number of calories we need on a daily basis, gradually reduces as we get older, as a result of moving less, losing muscle mass and hormonal changes.

This can mean we do not burn calories as efficiently as we once did. So, if you are noticing it is harder than ever to keep on top of weight gain, here are some easy changes you can make to give your metabolic rate a boost.

Change something, change everything.

The body is exceptionally smart, and loves efficiency, which means if you move the same way, and eat the same thing every day, it is likely that your body has now become exceptionally efficient at burning calories over time, and as such is now burning fewer calories than it once did.

For this reason, constantly changing the way you exercise and eat helps to keep the metabolism working hard. So, if you always eat the same breakfast or do the same routine at the gym – change it.

Go to the gym before breakfast or after dinner rather than after breakfast, or make lunch your biggest meal of the day, leaving dinner as a light snack, and most importantly, keep changing these regimes regularly.

Time to lift baby

If you are serious about increasing metabolic rate, you are going to need to add resistance training to your weekly routine, at least a couple of times each week.

Weight training does not mean lifting like a body builder, but it does mean lifting progressively heavier weights using all your key muscle groups to encourage the cells to grow.

The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn and the higher your metabolic rate will be. If you are not familiar with weights, see a trainer to help write you a program or look for various classes held at all popular gyms that incorporate weights into their supervised classes.

Exercise efficiently

When it comes to exercise, efficiency is the key. It is much better metabolically to exercise harder for shorter periods of time, than it is to train with less intensity for longer.

It is also much better to use as many of your different muscles as you can, which is why running is such a good workout compared to sitting down and riding an exercise bike. Jumping, running, push-ups, any activity that uses a number of large muscles groups is going to be of the most benefit for those wanting to target their metabolic rate.

Adjust your meal number

The larger your meals are, the greater the amount of both calories and carbohydrates you are likely consuming. The more carbohydrates you consume, the greater the amount of insulin your body requires to process them. High levels of insulin over time are related to weight gain.

While eating more frequently than every two hours is not ideal, aiming to consume small meals and snacks every three to four hours is a great way to increase the amount of energy being burnt to digest food and a small but significant increase in metabolic rate over time. This means that you are better to eat 4 to 5 small meals each day, every 3 to 4 hours, rather than 2 to 3 larger meals with coffee in between. If you begin to notice hunger every 3 hours, you are on the right track in terms of meal size.

Focus on protein

As a nutrient, protein requires slightly more calories to digest than carbohydrate or fat and for this reason adding a rich protein source such as milk, yoghurt, lean meat or fish, soy or eggs to each of your meals or snacks will help to optimise calorie burn.

Hoka rarely discounts its running shoes, so when the Arahi 6 first went on sale a few months ago, the internet stormed the proverbial doors to get a pair for less while they were still in stock—most sizes were gone in a matter of weeks. But the popular Hoka running sneaker just popped back up at Zappos and REI in a handful of colors, giving shoppers one final chance to scoop up the savings.

Right now, the Hoka Arahi 6 is on sale for as low as $98 at Zappos—up to 30% off the original $140 price. Zappos currently has sizes 9 through 13 available in three colorways. REI also restocked the Arahi 6 in two colorways ranging in sizes from 8.5 to 13 and is currently selling it for $113, or roughly 19% off. These running shoes have been a top seller at each retailer, having earned a combined 2,100-plus five-star ratings.

The Hoka Arahi 6 is a breathable and bouncy stability shoe that features a little extra arch support compared to styles like the Bondi or the Mach. It was designed to help prevent feet from rolling inward, or overpronating, and features a thick and well-cushioned midsole that helps absorb the shock of feet pounding the ground. They’re a great shoe to wear for everyday walking or neighborhood runs but provide everything needed for a day at the gym. The Arahi is also a style that’s been approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) as one that promotes good foot health.

Shoppers love the Arahi 6 because of its incredibly lightweight build, its fun colors, and how well it can support a foot. It’s often that shoppers have jaw-dropping moments after their first experience wearing them. “Size and fit were perfect,” a Zappos shopper said in their review. “I’m not used to such a sturdy and supportive shoe, but after I wore it the first day working out—wow! Without a doubt, the best sneaker I’ve ever worn. Great for walking and exercising in the gym. The comfort and support are simply outstanding.”

Even seasoned runners have been wowed by the Arahi 6. “I’ve been running for about 65 years,” an REI shopper began. “Probably have worn 30-40 various running shoes. Some expensive, less expensive. [These] running shoes are the best pair I have ever owned. Fit, responsiveness, and total comfort with many activities. This is the best on the market for any exercise one chooses.”

With the Hoka Arahi 7 now on shelves, this unexpected restock is the last chance to pick up a pair of Arahi 6 running shoes on sale. If you’re a runner, a walker, or somebody who has to stand for long periods and is always on the lookout for a comfortable sneaker, this is one to consider. But don’t wait to get yours, because once sizes run away, they’re gone forever.

Shoppers Are Ditching Their $170 Ray-Bans for These Bestselling Sunglasses on Amazon That Are Just $25

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

In its 88 years, Ray-Ban has become one of the most sought-after sunglasses designers with a laundry list of hit styles. They’ve shown up in hundreds of movies and have been seen on thousands of celebs from Bob Dylan to Johnny Knoxville. But Ray-Bans can be costly. Thankfully, there’s an emerging sunglasses brand making shades that look exactly like the $171 Ray-Ban Wayfarer for just $25, and shoppers have taken note.

The unisex Goodr OG Sunglasses were originally designed to be nonslip running shades but have become a beloved daily accessory for those in search of high-quality, affordable options. This style has earned more than 5,000 five-star ratings from shoppers and is currently the No. 5 bestselling style of sunglasses on Amazon. It’s available in classic colors like black monochrome and tortoiseshell, but the brand offers plenty of sportier colors that liven up any outfit.

Goodr’s OG Sunglasses do what sunglasses should—reduce glare with their polarized lenses and block UV rays. But they also have several special features that Ray-Ban’s Wayfarers don’t have, despite the similar silhouette. Goodr’s shades feature a rubbery grip coating that was originally intended to help them stay put through the jostling and sweating that comes from running, hiking, or playing sports—whatever have you. But the grip also helps keep them in place on smaller nose bridges, making them an ideal accessory. Many shoppers have said they’re also lighter than a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

Shoppers say there’s a lot to love about Goodr’s OG Sunglasses, including their incredible fit, their long-lasting comfort, and their amazing style. Many go as far as saying they’re the “most comfortable” they’ve ever worn. “I’ve worn probably well over two dozen different types/styles/brands of sunglasses over the past several years and these sunglasses are honestly the most comfortable I have ever worn,” a shopper said. “They feel great when I’m wearing them, soft and light, and also they stay on top of my head indoors so well that I forget I have them on…Overall, good value for the money. I’m buying a second pair.”

Many have compared them to their Ray-Ban sunglasses and almost always say they prefer the more affordable Goodr style. “These replaced my Ray-Bans. Great sunglasses. Great for out on the water since they are polarized,” one shopper said. Another shopper who’s a “self-proclaimed sunglasses snob” who normally wears Maui Jim and Ray-Ban said, “These are amazing! A lady on my cruise recommended them. Light, comfortable, stylish, sporty, versatile, quality. You won’t be disappointed.”

If you’re somebody who is constantly losing or ruining their shades, it’s worth checking out the Goodr OG Sunglasses instead. For just $25, you get better color options, a better fit, and peace of mind that more expensive designer styles just can’t offer.

Dietitian shares how to take control of emotional eating

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 4:03 am

Whether it’s downing a packet of Tim Tams after an especially stressful day. Or, using wine as a way to get through another relentless evening with the family.

Or, taking a trip to buy a treat from the local convenience to help you “feel better”, chances are you are using food to distract from or soothe your emotions.

While there is nothing wrong with enjoying a sweet treat or a glass of wine as a source of pleasure when the days are long, when you find yourself relying on, or overeating high calorie, ultra-processed foods regularly to make it through the day – it is a sign that emotional eating may be doing more harm than good.

What is emotional eating?

Emotional eating is a predisposition to eat in response to negative emotions, where eating a particular food is used as an unhealthy coping mechanism.

Emotional eating appears to be extremely common, with it estimated that 30-40 per cent of women use food to soothe or distract themselves from their emotions.

What causes emotional, eating?

Emotional eating may evolve for a number of reasons, and may be a learnt behaviour, even programmed in early childhood. It is also a habit that develops and becomes more firmly entrenched over time.

In the case of learnt or even subconscious programming, what may have started as a bowl of ice-cream or a treat whenever something unsavoury happened as a child, may now have become a subconscious search for sweet food whenever you are experiencing an uncomfortable emotion.

Here, the brain associates consuming a particular food with feeling better programming the brain to make a habit of seeking comfort in food. Sometimes taking the time to reflect on the correlation between self-soothing with food and early childhood experience is enough to bring this programming to one’s consciousness. This awareness can help one take control of the habit and make more mindful food choices.

In the case of habits that have formed over time, human beings do what is familiar. This means if you start to relax after a stressful day with a glass or two of wine, over time you are likely to continue this habit, every day, stressed or not.

How to take control of emotional eating?

Ultimately, the key to taking control of emotional eating, and overeating, is to learn a new way to self soothe – other than eating poor quality foods.

Taking the time to identify the emotion that you are feeling, and sitting with the discomfort of it, rather than distracting with food is the first step. Initially this may feel terribly unfordable, but as you learn to name how you are feeling, and allow yourself to feel angry, sad, disappointed or annoyed it will become easier over time. Journaling these emotions, talking about them with a friend, having a good cry, or getting a massage are all non-food ways to practice sitting with, and processing these emotions rather than using food as a distraction.

Change your environment

Perhaps one of the most powerful ways to keep emotional eating under control is to make it harder to do – if there are not a lot of snacks or drinks in the house to overeat, it becomes much harder to self soothe with poor quality food.

For this reason, limiting the amount of bad food you have available will go a long way in preventing emotional overeating as a regular bad habit you have established, and create the space and time to sit with an uncomfortable emotion and self soothe in a non-food related way.

When is emotional eating an issue?

Emotional eating is an issue when it is causing you psychological distress; when it is resulting in the overconsumption of poor quality, ultra-processed foods, which in turn may be sabotaging your underlying health goals.

A general feeling of “being out of control” may indicate it is worth taking active steps to understand the underlying drivers of your emotional eating, and seek out professional help if necessary to get it under control.

Vuori’s Bestselling Running Shorts That ‘Fit Perfectly’ Are on a Rare Sale and Starting to Sell Out Already

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Since its founding in 2015, Vuori has worked its way toward the very front of the athleisure movement, pumping the industry with better style-forward pieces that look as great as they perform. Though the brand makes some of the most comfortable performance T-shirts and running jackets, it’s a robust collection of bottoms that put them on the map, including a customer-favorite pair of shorts that just got a very rare discount.

The ultra-popular Vuori Kore Shorts are now on sale for $54 at REI—a 20% discount on the normal $68 price. This particular pair is the No. 1 bestselling style at REI and has earned over 200 five-star ratings from shoppers who use them for anything from running around town to swimming. They’re currently on sale in six exciting colorways and are available in sizes small through 2XL, though some sizes have already started to sell out.

These 7.5-inch do-it-all shorts are made with a combination of polyester and spandex that create the ultimate athletic garment. They’re moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and very breathable with some anti-odor properties that are useful when doing hot yoga or working out in a smaller gym. You get features you’d expect from a pair of shorts, like a drawstring and several pockets, but there’s one you might not have seen coming—a built-in liner.

Liners are typically only seen inside men’s swim trunks, but the idea behind the Kore Short’s built-in briefs is to offer men comfort beyond their regular drawers—with as much breathability as the best athletic underwear—without rubbing or getting in the way. The inner liner is completely breathable and also helps wick away sweat. If you’re not a liner person, Vuori also makes the Banks Shorts, which are also on sale at REI.

After shoppers try the Kore Shorts, they can’t get enough of the soft materials, the barely-there weight, and the clean-looking aesthetic. It’s often that shoppers end up coming back for more colors. “These are my husband’s third pair of Kore Shorts,” one shopper said. “He primarily uses them for indoor climbing, but they’re also great for HIIT workouts and swimming. They’re durable, well-lined, and look nice. Definitely worth the money.”

Many shoppers tell a story of how their Kore Shorts stick with them through numerous activities—a testament to their versatility. “Super comfortable, drawstring adds security to tighten when swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, or climbing,” another shopper said. “Dries quickly, which is vital, as I often go from water sports to hiking or climbing and need a fast dry. Love the liner—it’s all-in-one and I don’t need separate underwear.”

The Vuori Kore Shorts have been a brand bestseller for years, and shoppers have been more than happy to pay full price. Now that they’re on sale for $54, we’re expecting all colors to sell out quickly. If you’ve been looking for a great pair of men’s shorts for indoor/outdoor workouts, spring hikes, or tropical vacations, grab a pair of these (or two) while they’re still around.
