In honor of Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, three celebrities open up to Men’s Journal about the irreplaceable roles their moms have played in their lives.

Chase Rice, 36, a singer and songwriter based in Nashville, leans on his mom in good times and bad, and has immense gratitude for all she does for him.

“My mom is such an important part of my life, because she’s the only parent I’ve got left. I lost my dad when I was 22 and that changes a relationship permanently,” says Rice. “We’d always go to her for things, but now as my brothers and I are all getting older, it’s also our duty as her sons to check in on her and make sure that she’s taken care of, too.”

The steadfast devotion goes both ways. The “If I Were Rock & Roll” singer credits his mom, Connie Rice, for standing by him throughout the rollercoaster journey to success. “My mom has been there for me from the beginning of my music career—from the album that I made in college,” says Rice, noting that his mom would show up at some rough and tumble honky tonks where Rice played early in his career. “Trust me, they weren’t exactly the nicest and cleanest venues a mom could step into.”

They weren’t the arena or stadium shows that Rice now plays, but his mom didn’t care about that. “She was just fully supporting her son and that means the world to me,” says Rice.

Rice attributes his rock-solid bond with his mom to her letting him grow as a man—giving him both the support and the space he needed to evolve from a college grad trying to figure out life after losing his father to the man he’s become. “She’s helped me along the way. She’s steered me when I was headed in wrong directions. And she’s been there to support my crazy music dreams,” he says. “A lot of parents would say, ‘Don’t do that—that’s a crazy dream.’ She fully supported me—and that builds an unbelievable relationship.”

Chasing that dream has since paid its dividends. To date, Rice has sold more than 2.2 million albums and his music has over 2.1 billion streams. Rice still reminisces about the first time he played at the famed Grand Ole Opry venue and in a radio broadcast in Nashville in 2014 with his mom cheering him on.

“It was kind of eerie but also kind of awesome seeing my mom right there in the front row—with this empty seat next to her,” he recalls. “Obviously I wish my dad would’ve filled that seat, but my mom had the biggest smile on her face watching me play the Opry for the first time.”

Another priceless memory happened in March 2020—just before the world shut down amid the Covid-19 pandemic—when Rice played with Garth Brooks at Ford Field in Detroit.

“I looked out and saw my whole family, from my aunt to my brothers and my niece and nephew, with my mom standing right there in the middle of them,” he says. “It’s hard to explain how much that support means when you’re in front of 70,000 people. It was pretty special.”

JJ Julius Son is the frontman and songwriter for Icelandic rock band KALEO, a group that’s amassed more than 1 billion streams and 39 international music recording certifications to date. The 32-year-old, who hails from Mosfellsbaer, Iceland, is currently based in Nashville. He couldn’t have catapulted his way to selling out headline shows here without the love and loyalty of his mom, Thorlaug Sveinsdottir.

“My mother has always been one of my role models and still is,” says Son, describing his mom as an incredibly strong and independent woman who raised him to be kind and honest, with a rock solid set of values. “I can always trust her, and she’s always there for me,” he says.

Son finds it hard to express his relationship with his mother in words, but shares one quote that stands out to him. “I read this beautiful thing the other day that goes, ‘A mother is a son’s first true love. A son, especially their first son, is a mother’s last true love.’”

Recently, Son penned his own beautiful missive to his mom—in lyrical form, of course. The song “Into My Mother’s Arms,” from KALEO’s 2021 album Surface Sounds, is a touching tribute to the woman who did so much for him. “The song is my gift to my mother and to honor her,” says Son. “It’s about that feeling and the security your mother provides for you—even in the darkest times.”

Before the album came out, Son surprised his mother by giving her the song on vinyl, along with a music box that plays the intro of the song. “I also had a painting made with a photo of the two of us from when I was young. It was a beautiful moment, like so many other memories with her,” he says.

For the beloved woman who’s ingrained in Son the importance of being kind, honest, and true to oneself, the lyrics are the most fitting gift of all: “Say, hush child, lay your worries all aside, ’cause you rest into your mother’s arms.”

Morrie Schwartz’s quote: “Death ends a life, not a relationship.” rings true for Blaise Ffrench. The 32-year-old Los Angeles-based actor, model, entrepreneur, and marketing manager for BODY ARMOR Sports Drink lost his mom, Kym Irby, when he was a teenager, but she continues to imprint upon him in big ways.

“My mom means the world to me. She sacrificed so much of her life so I could have a better one,” says Ffrench, whose single mom raised him while working long hours to support his every need. “That kind of commitment makes you go so hard at life to pay her back for everything she has done,” adds Ffrench, who was 15 when his mom passed away. “I cannot let her name and everything she did go in vain—so every day I strive my hardest to make her proud and keep her name alive.”

Ffrench traces his love of basketball directly to his mom, a huge Knicks fan, who would attend all of Ffrench’s games and practices when his own basketball journey began. “There was a point where she quit her job and focused solely on me, my schoolwork, and basketball,” he recalls, noting that his school grades soared as a result—something even more important to Irby than her son’s hoops talents. Later in life, Ffrench was able to parlay this into a scholarship for undergraduate and master’s degrees.

As Mother’s Day approaches, Ffrench takes comfort in some of his happiest memories with his beloved mother. “One year I told my mom to wear something nice, and I took her out to our favorite restaurant at the time, Red Lobster—paying with my own money,” he says. “The smile on her face was so unmatched…I’ll never forget it.”

Ffrench also emphasizes his mom wasn’t only a very special woman to him, but to everyone with whom she came into contact. Even people who never met her are moved by the sacrifices Irby made for her son. “I give credit and respect to all moms out there,” says Ffrench, “especially single moms raising young boys in today’s world.” His career path is also a testament to his inspiring mother, who pushed entrepreneurship on him from a young age. “I’m so grateful to her for giving me that mindset—letting me know what I needed to do to be successful on my own terms,” he says. “I owe her the world and can’t wait to see her again.”

Every day, their deep bond endures. “My mom and I have an unbreakable bond because of the blood, sweat, and tears she put into making sure I have a better life than she did,” says Ffrench. “That kind of offering can only be reciprocated with loyalty and an obsessiveness to not let her down.”

How Quickly Do You Lose Physical Fitness? – Everyday Health

Filed under: Fitness — admin @ 9:49 pm

After Kelly Gillen completed the JFK 50 Mile in November 2016, she intentionally prepared to settle into a two-month break, give or take. The long-distance run, nearly twice the length of a marathon, had taken a lot out of the avid runner, who assumed she’d be raring to go again come January. But the 38-year-old scientist, who lives in Brooklyn with her husband and dog, quickly realized there was a problem when she hit the pavement again after her hiatus.

Gillen’s first run in early 2017 was unexpectedly painful, leading her to seek medical attention. Multiple visits with an orthopedist, along with two MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging scans), revealed that Gillen’s knee discomfort was due to a loss of cartilage under her kneecaps. She had to spend months in physical therapy and doing strength-training exercises before she was able to run again.

The unintentional time off resulted in a loss of fitness. For years, she used running as a way to clear her head and zone out. But post-injury, things were different. “I had to be very aware with each step,” Gillen says. “I basically had to relearn how to run,” she says.

She couldn’t go as fast or as far, and she couldn’t zone out because she was so focused on maintaining her form and not overdoing it. Although Gillen was thrilled to be able to run again, it was months before the movement felt as natural and effortless as it had before.

Whether you’ve stopped exercising because of an injury or some other reason (maybe the pandemic threw a wrench into your workout routine), fitness experts say Gillen’s slow-and-steady approach to starting back up again and regaining fitness is ideal. And yes, no matter how long you’ve been on a break with exercise, getting back into it can feel just as fantastic for you as it did for Gillen.

Kirk Campbell, MD, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone, says fitness loss is inevitable if you stop exercising for an extended period of time — no matter how fit you are. But exactly how quickly you lose fitness, and how much you lose, depends on both your personal circumstances and what kind of fitness you’re talking about.

How Quickly Do You Lose Cardiovascular Fitness?

Endurance athletes like runners, cyclists, swimmers, and dancers build up cardiovascular fitness (also called aerobic fitness or endurance) over sustained, consistent cardiovascular training.

This type of fitness won’t disappear in a matter of days, but it will decrease over time, according to Dr. Campbell. Generally, he says, cardiovascular fitness starts to noticeably decrease after about two weeks of being sedentary.

In a literature review published in Frontiers in Physiology in October 2020, the authors examined the existing evidence on “detraining,” aka losing fitness. Although results vary across different studies, the research suggests that for endurance athletes, a loss of cardiovascular fitness and endurance starts to happen after as little as 12 days of no exercise.

There’s not much evidence on how fitness continues to decrease after several weeks of total inactivity, but those in “good cardiovascular shape will take up to a few months to completely lose all of [their] aerobic fitness,” Campbell says, adding that the timeline is relative to each individual’s capabilities.

Also keep in mind that unless someone is injured, a break in their regular exercise rarely means complete inactivity. In the literature review cited above, the evidence suggests that cardiovascular fitness of regular exercisers starts to decrease significantly after about 35 days (five weeks) of occasional, light exercise. So, that means if you were exercising a lot and then drastically reduce the intensity of your workouts, you might also notice a decrease in cardiovascular fitness.

How Quickly Do You Lose Strength?

Muscle mass loss, which might limit your ability to lift weights or lug home your groceries, isn’t likely to be significantly impacted in two to three weeks time, though this too depends on several factors, including age, diet, sleep hygiene, and your fitness level before you take a break, says Campbell. He points to a study published in May 2020 in the International Journal of Exercise Science in which researchers found that even three weeks of detraining doesn’t decrease muscle thickness, strength, or performance in sports in a group of 21 male adolescent athletes.

An older study suggested that age is a huge factor when it comes to losing (or not losing) muscle strength. Researchers looked at the effects of strength training and detraining on adults in two age groups: 20- to 30-year-olds (18 participants) and 65- to 75-year-olds (23 participants). After nine weeks of resistance training, all participants increased their one-repetition maximum strength (the younger group by 34 percent, and the older group by 28 percent). After 31 weeks of detraining, the younger adults lost just 8 percent of the strength they had gained, while the older adults lost 14 percent. According to the study, loss of strength happens more quickly as we age, although it decreases far slower than cardiovascular fitness.

Even if You Lose Some Fitness, Training Breaks Can Be Good for You

Even though you’ll lose some fitness with breaks from training, periods of rest are still really important for the body — and the mind — especially after periods of arduous training. “Recovery is important from both a physical and mental standpoint,” says Campbell — it allows you to make greater fitness gains in the long run.

Running coach Neely Gracey, certified by the Lydiard Foundation and based in Denver, says she’s always taken a scheduled two weeks off at the end of each marathon season. She encourages her athletes to do the same. “Some want more time, some want less, but a period of no running to allow the body and mind to rest and reset is important,” Gracey says.

The five-time Team USA competitor says time off helps athletes avoid injury from muscle overuse, and it also helps reduce burnout, a sentiment which Campbell echoes: “Taking a break from working out can be beneficial [to] avoid burnout.”

However, there’s a notable distinction between intentional time off (like following an endurance event) and unintentional breaks in exercise (where you have no plans of getting back into a routine). In other words, a short break can be beneficial to avoid burnout and injury, but taking time off shouldn’t become a long-term lifestyle choice.

Why? Returning to exercise after a long break comes with its own mental and emotional challenges.

Gillen says she struggled mightily in this department. Logging double-digit-mile runs had been the norm, but after months of not running, 10 miles suddenly seemed “insurmountable.” “It’s definitely a mental thing [that was] really hard at the beginning,” Gillen says.

3 Tips for Not Losing Fitness if You’re Exercising Less Than Usual

1. Keep Moving Throughout the Day

“No matter your fitness level and how that changes throughout your journey, there are many ways to get activity into your day,” says Jeter, who suggests bodyweight exercises (no gym or equipment required), hiking, or or even gardening. Campbell recommends light training, including body resistance exercises that don’t lead to an elevated heart rate, to limit the loss of strength, and points to the proliferation of fitness apps as aiding this endeavor. Of course, if you’re taking a break due to injury or for another medical reason, it’s important to clear all activity with your doctor.

2. Don’t Underestimate Body-Weight Movements

While die-hard runners may find strength-training exercises alone an inadequate substitute for multi-mile runs, exercises that work the body’s muscles and encourage flexibility are crucial if limiting fitness loss is the goal, says Kayla Jeter, a CFSC- and RRCA-certified running coach based in Chicago.

Campbell recommends bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups (which you can modify to do on your knees) to limit strength loss, and regular stretching to maintain flexibility. There are countless fitness apps and videos out there, many of them free, that can guide you through short body-weight workouts.

3. Prioritize Strength Training

While taking a break from running to recover from injury, Gillen focused on strength. She worked mostly with kettlebells, doing squats, deadlifts, and swings to help strengthen her glute muscles and her body overall. She considers her months-long running break to be time well spent, because ultimately, the strength building made her a better runner. She now relies less on her quadricep muscles because her glutes are activated, which reduces her injury risk. Five years later, she still integrates kettlebells into her exercise routine.

Jamal Browner Notches a 345-Kilogram Squat (760.6 Pounds)Triple PR & 410-Kilogram Deadlift (903 Pounds) Double PR

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 9:25 pm

By now, it’s probably fair to expect Jamal Browner to manage staggering strength feats during his training. On April 19, 2022, the powerlifter did it again when he squatted 345 kilograms (760.6 pounds) for three reps and deadlifted 410 kilograms (903 pounds) for two reps in training. Both lifts were personal records (PRs) for Browner.

Browner — who competes in the 110-kilogram weight class — wore a lifting belt and knee sleeves during his squat triple PR. He also donned a belt during his conventional stance deadlift double PR.

[Related: Powerlifter Danny Grigsby Deadlifts 915 Pounds For 2 Reps And Then Pulls 770 Pounds For 8 Reps]

All things considered, Browner manages both PR lifts with relative ease. He completes his deadlift double with zero rest between reps, and aside from a slight pause between each of his squat triple reps, there’s little sign of an apparent struggle.

Browner at a Glance

Browner has made a name for himself by being one of the strongest active powerlifters in the deadlift. He is a member of the 1,000-pound deadlift club, once pulling a 476.3-kilogram deadlift (1,050 pounds) and a 455-kilogram deadlift (1,003 pounds). Notably, he accomplished both from a sumo stance while wearing lifting straps.

In the 110-kilogram weight class, Browner possesses the current raw world record with a pull of 440.5 kilograms (971 pounds), which was set at the 2020 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Hybrid Showdown II.

Recently, during another training session, Browner managed a 432.5-kilogram deadlift (953.5 pounds) from a conventional stance. It might only be a matter of time before he secures a 1,000-pound deadlift in both conventional and sumo.

Here are some of the more notable results of Browner’s career to date:

Jamal Browner (110 KG) — Notable Career Results

  • 2016 USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Border Bash Alabama vs. Georgia — 1st place | First career victory
  • 2017 North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) Arnold A7 Bar Grip Raw Pro Challenge — 1st place
  • 2018 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) North American Championships — 1st place
  • 2020 WRPF Hybrid Showdown II — 1st place
  • 2021 WRPF Hybrid Showdown III —  1st place
  • 2021 WRPF The Bucked Up Showdown — 1st place
  • 2022 USPA Hybrid Showdown 4 — 1st place

Browner has become a well-rounded powerlifter in an almost six-year professional career. Here are his best-ever marks during powerlifting competitions:

  • Squat — 365 kilograms (804.7 pounds)
  • Bench Press — 224.5 kilograms (496 pounds)
  • Deadlift — 440.5 kilograms (971.1 pounds) | Raw World Record | Conventional Stance
  • Total — 1000 kilograms (2204.6 pounds)

[Related: Powerlifter Jessica Buettner Deadlifts 507 Pounds For 6; Crushes 405-Pound Paused Squat For 4 Reps]

A New Challenge

While he continues to push it to the limit during training, Browner has not yet announced his next competition. If recent history is any indication, his next event might be under the eye of the WRPF in the early fall. The next upcoming event that meets those parameters is the 2022 WRPF The Clash on the Columbia on September 3-5, 2022, in Vancouver, WA.

With a formal invitation from the Giants Live organization, he could also elect to compete in the 2022 World Deadlift Championships (WDC). Those will take place during the 2022 Giants Live World Open on Aug. 6, 2022.

However, notably, the 2022 WDC is a strongman competition — meaning athletes can utilize lifting straps, deadlift suits, and lifting belts for their pulls. Strongman events also do not allow Browner’s favored sumo stance. In addition, many of the athletes weigh more than 100 pounds than him. It would undoubtedly be a test for Browner, who has only ever competed raw.

Nonetheless, with Browner continuing to capture new PRs in training, there’s no telling what he could achieve soon.

If you’re still having trouble, switch out your current cable for a new one. If it’s working with a new cable, you’re good to go—keep the cable plugged in or purchase a new one if needed. Before you plug it back in, make sure to blow out any dust from the port manually or, better still, with canned air. You should also visually inspect the cable to check for damage.

Your smartwatch could detect COVID-19 symptoms before you do, new study finds

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 6:04 am

We already know that smartwatches can tell us plenty about ourselves — from sleep, to activity levels, even our blood oxygen count.

Now a new study has confirmed that the data a smartwatch collects can do even more, including detecting symptoms of COVID-19 even before we might notice anything.

It all comes down to heart rate changes that happen in response to an infection.

A University of Michigan study examined the effects of COVID-19 with six factors derived from heart rate data.

It found that a person’s daily basal heart rate tended to increase on or before symptom onset (possibly because of fever or heightened anxiety), which could give the wearer an early warning.

The study also found that your smartwatch can actually track the progression of your symptoms. Individuals with COVID experienced an increase in heart rate per step after symptom onset, and was again higher in those with a cough.

“Circadian phase uncertainty”, meaning a shift in your body’s ability to keep time, also increased around symptom onset.

Heart rate data from participating college students between 2019 and 2021 was examined, with most wearing a Fitbit — a popular brand of smartwatch.

Researchers included individuals who reported a positive test, symptoms and had wearable data from 50 days before symptom onset to 14 days after.

“Identifying the varying patterns of different heart rate parameters derived from wearables across the course of COVID-19 infection is a substantial advance for the field,” said Srijan Sen, co-author of the study and professor of psychiatry.

“This work can help us more meaningfully follow populations in future COVID-19 waves. The study also demonstrates following cohorts with mobile technology and robust data sharing can facilitate unanticipated and valuable discoveries.”

Robert Oberst Opens Up About Retirement Plans After The 2023 World’s Strongest Man

Robert “The American Monster” Oberst has been a fixture in competitive strongman for nearly a decade. By late spring next year, the American athlete will hang up his lifting belt for good.

On April 16, 2022, Oberst shared his plans for the coming year on his YouTube channel. Amongst a plethora of updates, Oberst announced that he will retire from competitive strongman following the 2023 World’s Strongest Man (WSM).

Off Into the Sunset

Oberst hasn’t competed since he tore a tendon in his shoulder in August 2021. That injury knocked him out for the remainder of last year’s season. It is also why he won’t participate in the 2022 WSM this May. He admits losing this opportunity isn’t easy.

“It’ll be hard to sit this one out,” Oberst said in the video. “I will be back next year. I will be back competing in the 2023 World’s Strongest Man. Then, after that, I’ll be done.”

Oberst didn’t mince words in explaining why he wanted to walk away. It’s understandably challenging to give up an endeavor from such a sizable portion of his life. At some point, the physical risk outweighs the reward.

“It’s time for me to thank God that I haven’t beaten up and torn up more than I already have,” Oberst says.

Indeed, while Oberst’s recent shoulder injury is one of the more significant ailments of his career, it doesn’t mean it stands alone. The nature of professional strongman — in lifting variations of incredibly heavy weights, repeatedly — can be demanding on every aspect of the body. That sort of attrition can add up over time.

This’ll be my riding off into the sunset, guys.

While still strong and able-bodied, at the age of 37, Oberst might not want to subject himself to those rigors anymore. Instead, as he discusses, it’s time to look ahead to the next ambitious phase of life.

“I’m building a ranch I am super excited about,” Oberst says. “I’m basically gonna spend my time out there. We’re gonna have hunting, and training, and courses for kids.”

A Monster Career

Before he was a strongman, Oberst played Division II college football at his alma mater, Western Oregon University. Once he graduated in 2009, he tried his hand at the NFL but couldn’t gain traction with any team. Oberst then shifted to bouncer work at nightclubs in San Francisco. There, one of his friends told him about the merits of strongman competition.

The rest was history.

Oberst first burst onto the professional scene as a 27-year-old in September 2012. He’s been a regular around the central strongman sphere ever since. Here are some of the more notable results of Oberst’s career to date, according to Strongman Archives:

  • 2012 America’s Strongest Man (ASM) — 3rd place
  • 2013 All-American Strongman Challenge — 3rd place
  • 2013 ASM — 3rd place
  • 2013 WSM (Final) — 9th place
  • 2014 ASM — 2nd place
  • 2015 Arnold Australia (AA) — 3rd place
  • 2017 International Strongman Federation (ISF) ISF1 — 1st place
  • 2017 Giants Live World Tour Finals — 6th place
  • 2018 WSM (Final) — 8th place
  • 2019 Giants Live World Tour Finals — 9th place

One Last Ride

After sitting out most of the 2022 season, Oberst will likely have to fare well in at least one Giants Live event over the next approximate year to qualify for the 2023 WSM.

Right off the bat, the strongman will compete at the 2022 Giants Live World’s Strongest Nation (WSN) on November 26, 2022, in Liverpool, England. There, Oberst will serve as captain of Team USA.

While Oberst hasn’t offered any more detail on upcoming competition plans, he does have a bevy of potential options. In addition to the WSN, Oberst could consider The Giants Live Open on August 6, 2022, in Cardiff, Wales. There’s also the Arnold Strongman UK in Birmingham, England, on September 24, 2022, and the Giants Live World Tour Finals on October 8, 2022, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Whatever path Oberst does end up choosing, this likely won’t be the last time we see the American athlete. Between his upcoming ranch and YouTube channel with over 338,000 subscribers, Oberst will assuredly stay busy and visible in retirement. Before those days arrive, he’ll have to see what his final strongman hurrahs hold in store.

Leading the way: Sunshine Coast vet nurse’s furry fitness idea an Australian first – Sunshine Coast News

A Sunshine Coast veterinary nurse has teamed up with a fitness expert to deliver an Australian-first program that’s getting pet owners and their furry friends moving like never before.

Vicki Brown has created Barking Mad Fitness as a way for dogs and their people to physically train together and create stronger bonds.

She and Sunshine Coast group fitness trainer, Joel Sherwell, are running classes at Nelson Park on Okinja Road at Alexandra Headland.

“People are very time poor nowadays, so I thought if I could combine their personal training regime with their pet dog,” Vicki said.

“This allows them to both get physically and mentally fitter together and form a stronger bond.

“There’s no better workout buddy than your dog. They are always excited and ready to go and will encourage you to get out there.

“Turning up to a new training session can be daunting if you’re on your own but with your pet beside you it’s so much easier,” she said.

Vicki said there were a couple of similar businesses interstate, but what separated Barking Mad Fitness was the combination of a trained veterinary nurse and personal trainer at each session.

“Having a trained veterinary nurse at each workout session ensures that each dog can be checked to ensure it is healthy and can participate in the program,” she said.

“We can also identify dogs who should be on a restricted program because of their age, level of fitness as well as breed specific issues and this provides a real peace of mind for dog owners.”

Vicki said Joel Sherwell was the perfect fit for the program.

“Not only does Joel love dogs, but he also brings years of experience as a fitness trainer and he has come up with some great exercises and activities for dogs and their owners regardless of their age, ability or fitness level,” she said.

“It’s a very inclusive program and we are limiting the 45-minute training session to just 15 dogs and their owners, which is very manageable for everyone.

“All people need to do is bring a yoga mat or towel, a water bottle for themselves and their dog and a hands-free lead. We look after the rest.”

Barking Mad Fitness will also be available to licence nationally and Vicki believes it’s a great opportunity for vet nurses to create a new business to supplement their current income or become full time.
