Cricket curse strikes again in chaotic finalLauren Smith of the Thunder.

Filed under: Outdoors — admin @ 11:27 am

The Melbourne Stars curse has struck again, with their women’s side suffering a cataclysmic collapse in the WBBL final on Saturday evening.

Having dominated opposition throughout the entire tournament, the Stars faltered in their must-win clash against the Sydney Thunder, collapsing to 5/37 in the first innings.

The Stars finished in top spot on the WBBL ladder this year, qualifying for their first finals campaign in six years.

But after securing a comfortable victory against the Perth Scorchers in Wednesday’s semi-final, the Melbourne-based club crumbled to an embarrassing seven wicket thrashing.

Although she has opted to bowl first all season, Stars skipper Meg Lanning chose to have a bat at North Sydney Oval, a decision she immediately regretted.

Even stranger, it was the first time she had won the toss and batted first in four seasons.

The Thunder’s seam bowlers were impeccable with the new ball under lights, hooping the ball around corners and baffling the Stars top-order.

South African import Shabnim Ismail was at her fierce best on Saturday, ending her four-over spell with 2/12.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Sammy-Jo Johnson will finish as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker after snaring 2/11 from her four overs.

Although the Thunder spilt several catches in the field, the Stars continued to offer chances throughout their dire collapse.

Lanning was removed for 13, while South African star Nat Sciver was cheaply dismissed by tweaker Sam Bates for 11.

The Stars finished with 9/86 from their 20 overs, the club’s second-lowest team total in WBBL history.

The Thunder chased the target with 38 balls or 6.2 overs to spare to secure their second WBBL title.

Skipper Rachael Haynes (21 not out off 17 balls) and English international heath Knight (26 not out off 19 balls0 guided the Thunder to victory.

The Melbourne-based franchise has an unfortunate record in finals series’, their male team regularly tripping at the final hurdle.

The Stars’ BBL side have qualified for the post-season on eight occasions, but are yet to win a title. They have lost three BBL finals since 2016, including their unforgettable choke against the Melbourne Renegades in 2019.

Now their female counterparts have suffered the same fate, and the Stars finals hoodoo lives on.

Debutant’s day starts with win, ends on backsideZac Lloyd (left) celebrates with (from left) co-trainer Trent Edmonds, strapper Natahlia Johnson, mum Nicola, sister Tayah, brother Jaden and dad Jeff. Picture: Three Way Photos

Filed under: Outdoors — admin @ 10:16 am

Having watched his father Jeff ride all his life, Zac Lloyd was well aware the riding caper is a tough business and by the close of his first day in the saddle on Friday, he had first-hand experience of his own.

Lloyd, 17, made the perfect start to his riding career when he landed the $1.30 favourite Satine a winner for his masters Toby and Trent Edmonds at Dalby in his very first ride in a race.

It was the first step in following the feats of his father, who rode successfully all around the world before rewriting the record books – after coming back from a stroke – in his final few years riding in Queensland before retiring in 2019.

“It’s just amazing. It’s been such a long time coming. I can’t thank Mr Edmonds and Trent enough for the ride they gave me today,” he told SKY Racing.

“Once she jumped and put herself there I knew she would be very hard to beat.”

As older brother Jaden, 18, went on to ride a winning double in what was his first Queensland wins after starting his career in Victoria, it seemed it was going to be a perfect day for the Lloyd family, with Jeff, Mum Nicola and sister Tayah all on course to mark the occasion.

But that changed when Zac ended up on his backside when he came off hot favourite Palicki, who jumped awkwardly, soon after the start in the last race on the card.

Fortunately, he escaped injury.

For Mum Nicola, the range of emotions she endured yesterday don’t come more extreme.

She understands the pressure on the boys given the record-breaking feats of their father and also feels an element of trepidation before every race, knowing the risks jockeys take each time they go to the barriers.

“My nerves are shot,” she said.

“I’ve aged 30 years. None of us will forget the day, that’s for sure.”

Nicola has watched Jaden ride since August last year and of course saw Jeff go to the races for decades, but the fears never go away.

“I’ve got better watching Jaden now, but trying to watch two people in a race, I was holding my breath,” she said.

“Of course I am proud (to see the boys ride three of the seven winners).

“It’s a lot of pressure for a 4kg apprentice to go to the races with your first ride (expected to win). People think it’s just a sit and steer, but it’s not that simple.”

‘Clueless’ fight over Tyson-Jones Jr rulesRoy Jones Jr. is looking in good shape too.

Filed under: Outdoors — admin @ 10:14 am

It’s been sold as one of the biggest comeback fights of all-time but as the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. fight gets closer, the details are getting murkier and murkier.

With the two champions facing off in the highly anticipated bout, confusion has come to the fore with a baffling fight over whether there will actually be a winner on the night.

Watch Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jnr only on Main Event, available on Foxtel and Kayo on Sunday 29 November at 1pm AEDT. ORDER NOW >

The news blew up when California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) executive director Andy Foster told MMA Fighting earlier in the week that it was an exhibition fight rather than a real bout.

“Let’s call it an exhibition. That’s what it is. I want the public to know what this is because I don’t want people to be disappointed,” he said. “As long as they know this is an exhibition, I’m fine for everybody to earn.

“There’s no official judges. The WBC is going to have some guest celebrity judges remotely, not official, not 10-9, nothing like that. No cumulative score. No winner announced. That’s a very entertainment centred thing. It’s about entertainment. It’s not about competition. It is what it is and it’s not more than it is but it’s going to be fun.”

Originally, the pair were going to fight for the WBC Frontline Battle Belt, but will instead both be presented commemorative straps for their effort. The fight will also be scored but by former champions Christy Martin, Vinny Pazienza and Chad Dawson, who will judge remotely and the result will not go on the fighter’s official record.

The other rules were that there will be eight two minute rounds, both men wearing headgear and using heavier 12-ounce gloves, the fight ends if either man suffers a bad cut, and both men have to undergo medical testing and Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency testing.

But the water was muddied when Tik Tok rival Triller, who are presenting the fight, added to the confusion.

The company’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh released a statement after Foster’s comments.

“Know there have been some false rumours swirling, so to be crystal clear — The WBC is scoring the fight,” the statement read.

“There could be a knockout and there will be one winner. Anyone who says there is going to be no judging or no winner either does not understand the rules or has their own agenda. Unquestionably. 100%.

“DraftKings is the betting partner and is taking bets on the fight in New Jersey, New Hampshire and Illinois. The only difference in this fight is the gloves are 12 ounces, there are eight rounds and the rounds are two minutes rather than three.”

Kavanaugh also told Variety that “If someone’s bleeding, the fight’s not going to stop” as well as “knockouts are allowed”.

But Yahoo’s combat columnist Kevin Iole followed up, which just added to the confusion.

After being told by a Triller PR person that CSAC “had nothing to do with sanctioning the fight”, Iole took it to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, who contradicted the statement.

“The only authority is the California State Athletic Commission,” Sulaiman wrote to Iole.

“The WBC is celebrating this great event and providing a special award of honour to both Tyson and Jones with a unique WBC belt. For added entertainment and technology demonstration there will be three celebrity judges in an unofficial capacity.”

Triller then released another statement.

“We have nothing but the utmost respect for Andy and everyone at CSAC. For total clarity, we are not implying that CSAC is picking a winner or scoring this, WBC is doing both. WBC is scoring under a 10-9, and a knockout will be a win under WBC’s scoring. The results will not be reflected on their fight record. We apologise for any confusion and look forward to a great night of fights Saturday night.”

But Iole again called Triller out, adding that “this is still incorrect. They aren’t scoring 10-9, etc, per Foster.”

American boxing reporter Dan Rafael tweeted of the baffling statements: “Clowns. And clueless clowns at that.”

The confusion has led to some betting agencies to remove betting from the bout.

With the fight to take place on Sunday, Iole said it’s been a trying week to the big fight.

But while the results may be unofficial and only for the broadcast, CSAC might need to tell Tyson and Jones Jr. it’s only an exhibition and that the results are unofficial.

The pair have promised to go for the knockout and openly mocked the rules, including the two minute rounds.

Tyson’s coach Rafael Cordeiro also reiterated that Tyson was going for the KO. It’s what he’s been saying since the fight was announced.

“Two legends in the ring, they both are going for the finish,” Cordeiro said. “The fight has three judges and a referee, so it’s a real fight and must have a winner. It’s no longer an exhibition, someone has to win. We’ll try to win from start to finish.

“Mike is not going there for an exhibition, he’s going there to fight.”

WHEN IS TYSON vs JONES Jr?

The fight was originally down to take place in September, but was pushed back due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It will now take place on Sunday, November 29 with the coverage beginning at 1pm (AEDT).

Hardman on mission to silence trainerBoxer Issac Hardman, with his dog Loma, is fighting for the Australian middleweight title. Picture: Peter Wallis

Filed under: Outdoors — admin @ 10:08 am

Brisbane boxer Issac Hardman has two reasons to beat Tej Singh – to win the Australian middleweight title and silence his opponent’s trainer.

The man they call “Headsplitter” takes on Singh on the undercard to the showdown between Australian heavyweight champion Justis Huni and Arsene Fosso at the Fortitude Music Hall.

Former MMA competitor Hardman, who has seven wins – six by knockout – from as many professional bouts, respects Singh, but has no time for Singh’s trainer Gerry Murphy.

“Tej is a probably a really good guy but his coach, he’s always had something to say previously with me coming through,” 24-year-old Hardman said of Murphy.

“He’s just a bitter old man who doesn’t like this young up and comer making noise.

“He’s always said I’m not a boxer, I’ve got ugly ears, which I do, but who cares?

“When I get into the ring it’s going to be super satisfying just to shut him up. He’s going to have to say sorry to Tej because I’m going to put him through hell.

“I don’t need any extra motivation to thump someone, but it’s definitely there.”

The winner of the fight will not only win the national title but also the IBF Australasian and WBO Pan Pacific middleweight belts.

Hardman’s promoter Dean Lonergan said his fighter’s job was to become the first man to knock out 34-year-old Singh, who has a professional record of 16 wins, four losses and three draws.

“If he can do that, that’s going to be a major step forward … probably six or seven fights from a world title,” Lonergan said.

WNBL: Brutal Boomers strike down LightningWNBA champion Ezi Magbegor is a defensive and offensive force. Picture: Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images.

Filed under: Outdoors — admin @ 9:53 am

Melbourne Boomers forward Ashleigh Karaitiana has identified the team’s WNBA champion Ezi Magbegor as the key to beating the in-form Adelaide Lightning on Tuesday night.

After starting the season on fire with wins over Liz Cambage’s Southside Flyers and Perth, the Boomers have slumped to consecutive losses.

Melbourne will look to steady their season when they take on an Adelaide side who will be playing its first game since being forced into six days of quarantine last week following the COVID-19 outbreak in South Australia.

Watch a live stream of the game in the video player above with tip-off scheduled for 5pm local (6pm AEDT)

Karaitiana is expecting a tough clash against the Lightning, but she has full faith in Magbegor to lift the Boomers.

“Ezi is a major key to our team,” Karaitiana said about Magbegor, who won the 2020 WNBA championship with the Seattle Storm.

“She is so gifted and so athletic- it just amazes me.

“This is the first season I’ve played with her, and for someone so young and talented, she is the most humble player I’ve ever played with.

“It is amazing to see her work and when she wants to be, she is unstoppable.

“The energy she brings at both ends of the floor is massive.”

Karaitiana knows Adelaide will come out firing after being stuck in quarantine for almost a week, but she stressed the Boomers must worry about themselves.

“They (the Lightning) will definitely come out strongly, but we have a lot to focus on ourselves.

“We haven’t played as well as we did since beating the Flyers, so once we take care of our game the rest will just flow.”

8 Yoga Poses You Can Do in Your Desk Chair

Filed under: Outdoors — admin @ 7:36 am

Khloe Kardashian has been hitting the gym hard and has not been letting herself slack, no matter what is going on in her life, as well as making sure that she sticks to a very strict diet. Khloe has since gone on to lose around 35lbs.

“Khloe gives as much to the gym as the gym gives to her”

Gunnar Peterson has praised Kardashian for her dedication. Her Beverly Hills-based trainer explains why Khloe’s physical transformation has been so major: “We keep her mind challenged and her body guessing, and the focus is on building strength. She never cancels! Some days it’s more heart-rate intensive, some days it’s more lower-extremities intensive, some days the upper extremities get a little extra love.”

khloe1

He added: “As the changes have come, the diet has tightened up … She’s made better choices when she eats. She’s been more conscious about working on sleep habits. She hydrates better. She keeps getting after it and she keeps getting better. We’re always playing with our workouts. We’re always making it that much more challenging.” And that hard work and intense focus has helped our September cover star score what some might call a post-breakup revenge body.

“Yeah, it’s a revenge body”

Khloe says. But it’s just as much for all my critics who called me ‘the fat one’ for my entire existance.” Her workout consists of a complete routine, two or three times a week, on nonconsecutive days. You can try it yourself! Starting with the first exercise, do the prescribed number of reps, then rest 10 to 30 seconds. Do two to five sets of each move, then continue to the next move and repeat until you’ve done the entire routine.

The biggest obstacle most people face when trying to add exercise into their day is time. Many also (mistakenly) think that the only way to stay fit is to hit the gym or spend at least an hour doing aerobic exercise. While it’s true that you increase your fitness level when you increase the intensity, frequency and duration of your program, it’s possible to gain moderate fitness benefits from making small, consistent changes to your daily life.

The latest and probably one of the most common sense ways to get fit and lose excess body fat is by making painless additions of exercise to your day, combined with small diet modifications. For example, current research has shown that by consuming just 100 fewer calories per day, a woman can avoid the 1-2 pound gain most of us take on each year.

If you want to lose weight, you need to increase your daily caloric deduction by 500 calories, but you can do this by cutting 200 calories out of your daily diet and burning 300 calories more through exercise.

Add that up over a week and you’ll have nearly a pound of fat loss with very little pain or diet deprivation.

It’s the little things you do everyday that can make the difference between keeping fit or packing on additional pounds every year. Don’t underestimate the power of tiny changes: consistent, lifestyle changes are always more successful for losing and maintaining weight loss.

Here are a few tips to help you find painless ways to stay fit:

All rise! The average person burns 100 calories per hour while sitting and 140 per hour while standing. Get on your feet two hours a day while you work and you could drop 6 pounds over the course of a year. Stand while you talk on the phone and set up an area where you can work in a standing position (great for people with back pain!).

Take the stairs, not the elevator A 130-pound woman will burn nearly 20 calories each time she goes up and down the stairs. Do it all day watch how quickly those add up!

Dust while you talk on the phone.

Lose the remote. Get up to change the channel! And while you’re up grab some weights for a set of bicep curls or shoulder presses. You can work through a full strength training routine in an hour if you do a set during each commercial.

Park so you have to walk.

Walk and talk! Catch up on phone calls while your take a walk.

Be creative! Instead of thinking of all the ways you don’t have time to exercise, make it a game to see how many ways you can carve out time for little bouts of exercise. Lose your all or nothing mindset and look at exercise as a daily accumulation of activity.

Remember, to lose weight you still need to take a look at your diet and try to eliminate excess calories, especially those that come from junk. Your goal isn’t difficult cutting 200-300 calories from your daily diet can be easy if you choose foods that you won’t miss too much. Think about switching from a can a soda every afternoon to unsweetened iced tea or a flavored sparkling water. But remember, don’t cut something that you look forward to everyday (for me cutting cream in my coffee would be a deal breaker), instead look for little changes you can make that won’t make a big difference in the foods your enjoy.

“We’re always playing with our workouts”

Hot on the heels of her steamy spread in Complex magazine, Khloe Kardashian has revealed she’s lost about 35 pounds from hitting the gym. The 31-year-old told Australian radio show “Fitzy & Wippa” on Friday about her weight loss journey. “I’ve lost like, 35 pounds. I don’t really weigh myself … but I know how I want to feel in clothes and it does become addicting once you start losing weight and seeing results. I want to see more,” she said.

“The changes she’s made to her body are incredible. She’s done it the right way. Nothing fast, just hard work. Her body is bangin’ right now.”

3 Big Reasons Runners Should Strength Train
