The Connected Fitness Rollercoaster – Front Office Sports

Filed under: Fitness — admin @ 12:33 pm

Peloton is the feel-bad story that keeps on giving.

On Tuesday, the company reported lackluster earnings as it failed to meet expectations and saw widening losses, increasing inventories, and a decrease in overall cash levels. Not exactly what investors were hoping for under the helm of new CEO Barry McCarthy.

In the three-month period ended March 31:

  • Peloton had a loss-per-share of $2.27 vs. the $0.83 expected by The Street.
  • Net losses widened to $757.1 million.
  • Revenue came in lower than anticipated — $964.3 million vs. $972.9 million expected.
  • Cash and equivalents for the quarter were down 22% year-over-year.

McCarthy joined the company roughly three months ago with a plan to change its narrative from spinning out of control to peddling its way forward. Thus far, the road has been arduous.

In his letter to shareholders, McCarthy highlighted just how difficult the undertaking will be: “Turnarounds are hard work. It’s intellectually challenging, emotionally draining, physically exhausting, and all consuming. It’s a full-contact sport.”

On the other end of the spectrum, brick-and-mortar gyms have seen sharp increases in both revenue and profitability. In the past week, we received strong earnings reports from both Planet Fitness and LifeTime Fitness in a stark reversal from the 2020 “shift to digital fitness.”

In the first quarter of 2022, Planet Fitness saw almost all of its financial metrics increase year-over-year.

  • Total revenue increased by 66.9% to $186.7 million.
  • System-wide same-store sales increased 15.9%.
  • Net income increased to $16.5 million from $5.6 million in the previous period.
  • 37 new Planet Fitness stores were opened during the quarter.

LifeTime Fitness is having an equally notable run as the gym company sets its sights on expansion. In the first quarter, LifeTime’s sales soared 50% year-over-year and memberships rose 24%. The company plans to add to its 160 locations with another 12 in 2022 and in 2023.

While both companies have surpassed most financial expectations in the market, neither has benefitted when it comes to share-price appreciation. Planet Fitness and LifeTime are down 21% and 17%, respectively.

The entire landscape right now is a bit confusing. Just 18 months ago, connected fitness seemed here to stay.

Fast-forward to today and connected fitness companies like Peloton and Beachbody have undergone restructuring in their platforms and pricing models, sales have slowed substantially, and customers are increasingly opting for in-person workouts instead.

Making Sense of the Numbers

Even during its most tumultuous times, Peloton boasts a less 1% churn rate. The figure is impressive regardless of industry, and indicative of the fact that Peloton has already solved the most difficult part of the puzzle: product-market fit.

With a loyal user base and a track record of growing connected fitness users month-over-month for three-plus years, how are things going so poorly?

According to the company’s financials, it’s a cash issue.

  • In the third quarter, Peloton’s free cash flow was negative $746 million, meaning that cash generated after operating expenses and capital expenditures is nonexistent.
  • The business’ revenue growth decreased by 24% to $946 million during the quarter.
  • For every $1 dollar of revenues, Peloton has to burn through 79 cents of free cash flow.

Peloton currently has $879 million of cash on its balance sheet. The company was also recently able to take out a five-year loan from J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs for $750 million. Add up the existing cash on the balance sheet and the new loan from the banks and the company is operating with $1.6 billion.

However, the business is expected to burn through approximately $500 million of its cash flow during the next quarter. This means that Peloton — even after getting a $750 million loan — only has enough cash on hand to survive three quarters at the current burn rate.

In the earnings call, McCarthy insinuated that the company is aiming to be cash-flow positive by 2023 — a tall task by any stretch of the imagination.

The biggest hurdle is going to be hardware. On the call, McCarthy stated, “We need to be good at hardware, but being good at hardware is not nearly sufficient and that calls for a shift in the investment priorities of the business.”

The sentiment suggests that a continued shift to a subscription-first approach is imminent, but it also looks like Peloton is still set on diversifying its hardware portfolio.

On Friday, the company teased its long-awaited Peloton Rower. While no financial or product information was released, the partial reveal seems odd given the surrounding circumstances, and you’d think McCarthy would know better.

“The balance-sheet challenge has been managing inventory,” he said in the aforementioned letter to shareholders. “We have too much for the current run rate of the business, and that inventory has consumed an enormous amount of cash, more than we expected, which has caused us to rethink our capital structure.”

Existing customers love Peloton’s products, but the company put itself on an unsustainable growth trajectory by positioning itself as a tech stock. Without the requisite cash-fund growth, the downward spiral continues.

The Real Issues Are Bubbling Up

So, has the connected fitness bubble popped?

Peloton’s woes alone do not represent the crumbling of digital fitness — quite the opposite. The product works, and people love it. The issue is how we perceive the company.

It’s just that facilitating the level of growth that Peloton experienced from 2019 through 2021 (547% increase in share price) is extremely difficult when the core product is as capital-intensive as a super-fancy stationary bike.

I believe that connected fitness is exactly as meaningful and important a trend in the industry as it was at the onset of the pandemic. The market simply needs to realize that not every tech-enabled platform deserves to be treated like a tech giant.

Intermittent fasting can be really good for your brain, doctor explains

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 9:05 pm

Intermittent fasting is a popular – and dietitian approved – dieting concept for weight loss.

But as it turns out, regularly having a longer period without food could actually be really good for your brain.

Dr Rahul Jandial, world-renowned brain surgeon and neuroscientist, tells 9Honey that there are actually a host of psychological benefits to skipping breakfast every now and then.

“The brain is a hybrid vehicle and the concept of intermittent fasting has been proven to have a psychologically clarifying effect,” the author of Life Lessons From A Brain Surgeon tells us.

Intermittent fasting is where people only eat during a restricted window during the day, usually opting to either skip breakfast or dinner so that they have a 16-plus hour window (mostly overnight) where they aren’t consuming food.

“You have to have a 16-hour gap between consumption of things with nutrition, so you can have black coffee, with no sugar, you can have water, but nothing else,” Dr Jandial explains.

“And what the body naturally does is when glucose runs out after 16 hours, the liver says ‘the body’s out of glucose’, then the brain says ‘I’m not happy’, and then the liver will release ketones.”

Simply put, ketones (or ketone bodies) are an alternative fuel that is made in your liver when there is not enough glucose (sugar) for energy.

“If you look at the cognitive neuroscience literature, people do better with emotion, focus, alertness, when they’re running on a hybrid vehicle – sometimes electric sometimes gas, sometimes ketones, sometimes glucose,” Dr Jandial adds.

But it won’t happen overnight.

“That’s the raw science of why intermittent fasting works – that sort of switching back and forth – but it won’t do it in one day, more over months.”

Norwegian study shows changing lifestyle in 60s and 80s can add years to your life.
Cutting out whole food groups is bad for your brain. (9News)

When it comes to other fad diets, especially those that recommend cutting out complete food groups like carbs and sugar, Dr Jandial warns these won’t be good for your brain health.

“That’s the wrong kind of fasting,” he says.

“Cutting out subgroups; cutting out fat, cutting out carbs, cutting out’ blue things’ like blueberries, cutting chocolate, no, no.”

In the end it all comes down to the cadence of eating, not the actual ingredient itself.

The Retrospec Koa Rev Is the Perfect E-Bike for Summer

E-bikes have taken the country by storm. Not only are they buzzing up and down streets and bike lanes, but they’re hitting the trails and even whizzing down the sand at the beach. Haven’t had the chance to take one out for a spin yourself yet? Here’s the ultimate ride for your maiden voyage. The Koa Rev from Retrospec is our vote for the perfect entry-level rig to dive into the e-bike scene this season.

Having tested numerous e-bikes in all categories over the last few years, we have to say that the Koa Rev is about as versatile as it gets. It boasts a robust 750W rear-hub motor that can hit speeds of 20mph with six pedal-assisted levels—plus an ultra-responsive twist-throttle should you not want to pedal at all. Its 48V lithium-ion battery can pump out up to 48 miles of range, so you don’t have to worry about making it to (and from) just about any destination in town. A buttery front suspension makes for a hyper-smooth ride no matter what terrain you’re tackling. Those 4-inch-wide fat tires will roll you through sand, dirt, grass, and any kind of rough zones with ease.

For city riders, the Koa Rev offers all the reliable precision you need on congested roads, while offering up some bonus off-road muscle whenever you need it. The JAX Mechanical front/rear disc brakes are ultra-responsive, and the Shimano Altus 9S rear derailleur is super-smooth. Built like a tank (by e-bike standards) its nimble and lightweight enough to single-handedly load it onto a truck bed.

Its 26-inch frame is the optimal size for most people, and those ultra-capable fat tires will push through whatever the road throws at you. In other words, you’ll feel totally confident on this bike. It accelerates quick, stops on a dime, and—in case we haven’t mentioned it yet—it’s a total blast to ride. It also features a bright, intuitive handlebar-mounted LED screen for easy controls over all the bike’s functions, plus other critical intel such as battery level, mileage, pedal-assist level, and alternative power modes.

“Koa Rev is our most versatile e-bike. It’s incredibly powerful, great to ride on all terrains, and surprisingly ergonomic,” says Retrospec CEO/Founder Ely Khakshouri. “We call Koa Rev our ‘do-it-all’ e-bike because it’s ideal for commuting, cruising around the neighborhood, or adventuring off-road,” he adds. “No matter where you go or what you use it for, this e-bike guarantees a good time.”

retrospec koa

From a design standpoint, the bike has a sporty yet sophisticated look—and it’s a definite head-turner (believe us). Price-wise, the Koa Rev from Retrospec is as reasonable as it gets for a brand-new electric bike in this class, whether it’s your first e-bike or the long-awaited upgrade from last season’s bargain bike. From the trail to the coffee house to the pub, this remarkably likeable bike is the ticket—and the competitive price tag is the greenlight you’ve been waiting for.

First Look: The 2023 Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase Gets a Serious Stretch

What’s a bigger automotive flex than buying a luxury car to drive around? Plunking down upwards of $300K and never sitting behind the wheel. Enter the 2023 Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase—the kind of vehicle that’ll make your chauffeur the envy of every other driver on billionaires’ row.

At a preview in London in late February, we had the chance to inspect the new Bentayga up-close. Our first impression: The EWB is going to be an instant must for those hyper-affluent types who either hate driving or just want even more space.

The Lap of Luxury

As a “spiritual” replacement to Bentley’s Mulsanne (the brand’s now discontinued, limo-like sedan), the good folks in Crewe have taken their most popular model and stretched it a little over seven inches to give the rear seats more room. The aim here is to create the poshest rear cabin experience found on four wheels.

Customers can choose between two and three rear seats or the optional “airline” configuration that affords passengers an experience akin to flying in a private jet—with which we are sure much of the brand’s clientele is familiar.

These seats feature 22-way adjustment, and recline to 40 degrees in relax mode. A foot rest emerges from the passenger seat for added comfort. The configuration also offer a “business” mode for those who want to get some work done on the go.

Bentley has also incorporated a suite of wellness features which includes technology that detects the temperature of the passenger and the seat’s surface humidity, and then figures out whether it should add heat, ventilation or both to achieve “optimum thermal well-being.” If that weren’t enough (and one with the means can never have enough luxury), the massaging seats also deploy a postural adjustment system that automatically alters the seating position using 177 pressure modifications to minimize the impact of lengthy trips on the body.

On the Outside

To the unfamiliar eye, the extra length is barely perceptible as the EWB’s exterior is quite similar to a standard Bentayga, but there are some key differences. The EWB gets a new front grille and polished 22” 10-spoke wheels to help distinguish it from its little sibling.

Luxury is in the Details

From handcrafted wood paneling and inlays, the finest seating surfaces and colors, plus paints that can be matched to nearly any sample one could provide, Bentley offers an almost unfathomable 24 billion trim combinations alone. So buyers should have no problem customizing a highly personalized Bentayga EWB.

The rear seating area features “waterfall illumination” to subtly light the cabin as well as LED lights that shine through perforations in the door panels in a hallmark diamond pattern. It’s the sort of next-level attention to detail that leaves you marveling at both the imagination and the craftsmanship.

When the EWB goes on sale (around Q4 of 2022), Bentley will offer two even further elevated specs. The classically styled Azure gets unique 22-inch, ten-spoke wheels, bright lower bumper grilles, as well as Azure embroidery and badging. Rounding out the spec, Bentley has included quilted seats specific to the spec, mood lighting, a heated steering wheel, and an enhanced driver’s assistance package.

The First Edition, which will be available for the first year of production, kicks up the opulence one more notch. This package comes with metal overlays in the veneer, First Edition specific embroidery, inlays and badging, as well as a Naim for the Bentley Premium Audio system (one of the finest we’ve ever experienced)—plus LED welcome lamps.

Power and Performance

For a vehicle designed around a lavish passenger experience, the Bentayga EWB can still move. The 542-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission will get the behemoth from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 180mph—though going that fast probably diminishes the comfort level. Standard electric all-wheel steering should minimize the impact of the increase in size at both high speeds and when maneuvering in a driveway or parking lot.

The Extravagance is the Point

Bentley estimates the EWB will represent 45% of all Bentaygas sold when it hits markets late this year. That’s an incredible amount of demand for a vehicle that has yet to launch, but we have no doubt Bentley understands its customers. They simply want the best.

Pricing has yet to be announced but the Mulsanne it’s replacing had a sticker over $300,000. It’s probably a safe guess the Bentayga EWB will land somewhere in this rather exclusive ballpark. Bottom line: This isn’t a vehicle for regular folks; it’s for the one percent of the one percent.

Bala Launches Balacize, A New Digital Fitness Platform From The Workout Accessories Brand – Forbes

Filed under: Fitness — admin @ 5:30 pm

Today, Bala launches its new video content platform called Balacize, a colorful, design-driven workout experience for fans of Bala fitness accessories. Conceptualized as an opportunity for the brand’s exponentially growing community to optimize workouts and explore new ways of using Bala’s colorful, design-centric workout accessories, the new platform launches with 100 workout modules. Focused on leveraging its dedicated ambassador-instructors, called Balacizers, Balacize combines its top instructors with stylized set design and wardrobe, carefully curated music and videos that each feature one Bala product.

After a period of unprecedented growth in 2020 when brick-and-mortar studios were shuttered and fitness enthusiasts developed at-home routines, Bala’s revenue grew exponentially from $2m annually in 2019 to $16m annually in 2020 and then $23m in 2021. The new, web-based fitness platform was designed to accommodate this acceleration in growth as a natural digital evolution, with a dedicated Balacize app on the way. Co-founder Maximilian Kislevitz says of the launch, “Speed-to-market played an important role in this product release. We prioritized the web-based platform to create a seamless workout and shopping experience. We also felt an urgency to teach customers how to make the most of their Bala products. We are planning an app release in 2023.”

As core to the experience as education, Balacize echoes the design-driven ethos of the brand’s signature products. Kislevitz shares, “Just as Bala brought a design sensibility to physical product, we believe there is an opportunity to beautify fitness content as well. Our aim is to elevate the workout experience such that people are more inspired to workout. We’ve all seen workouts filmed in minimalistic studios or homes. In contrast, Balacize is a deeply immersive, fantastical workout experience.”

Another differentiator from existing fitness content is the way Bala serves workouts up to its community. Different from traditional digital fitness platforms that provide fixed workouts of 30-minutes and longer, the Balacize platform is made up of short-form workout modules that can be pieced together by users in a playlist. Pre-curated playlists can also be selected for a more traditional, longer workout made up of smaller modules. Kislevitz shares that, “Our first 100 videos can yield thousands of workout permutations. The Bala-curated Playlists also offer a variety of options based on duration of workout, product, category and instructor. We have nine official Balacizers who teach across Sweat, Sculpt, Flow and Unwind-themed classes. They include: Ridge Davis, Alexis Fischer, Aubre Winters, Marie Grujicic, Camai B, Danny Saltos, Grayson Gilbert, Jailyn Matthews and Renee Noa Harris.”

Balacize is the latest launch from Bala, which has released 10 fitness accessory products to-date, and recently opened a brick-and-mortar fitness studio and retail space in New York City. Kislevitz continues that, “Many of our fitness accessory products are brand new form factors (i.e a weighted ring) and fundamentally require product education for customers to make the most of them. To date, we’ve sold more than one million units of Bala Bangles and we’re regularly asked for workout content. Additionally, in a recent survey to our customer base, we found that 60+% of our customers used their Bala products 3+ times per week.”

Recommended For You

Balacize is currently being offered complimentarily, with plans to move to a paid subscription this summer. Starting then, one month of complimentary access will be provided with purchase of a Bala product, and subscriptions will start at $12.99 per month or $99 per year.

You can now workout like David Beckham at F45

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 5:05 am

Getting sweaty with football superstar David Beckham sounds like something we’d definitely be into – though sadly it’s also highly unlikely.

Unless you consider that F45 Training is now offering up something pretty close… well, sort of.

The global fitness brand has announced the launch of its new workout DB45, created by David Beckham himself, alongside Chief of Athletics and Hollywood trainer, Gunnar Peterson.

The 11-station, football-inspired cardio class combines exercises Beckham used in past training sessions, with stations representing typical football positions including Goal, Defence, Mid-Field, and Attack.

“For me, training as part of a team has always been my favourite way to workout and my DB45 program is influenced by exercises I did as a professional football player,” Beckham said.

“I’m excited for the F45 community to finally be able to try out [my workout].”

Paying homage to Beckham’s iconic jersey numbers from his football career, the set timings will alternate between 32 seconds work, 15 seconds rest, and 23 seconds work, followed by 20 seconds rest.

Members will then complete the ultimate finisher with seven x 30-second bodyweight exercises.

“Working with a professional athlete like David Beckham to create DB45 has been great fun and offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for the F45 community to train like an iconic athlete,” F45 Chief of Athletics Gunnar Peterson said, adding people are going to be “in for a lot of fun” with this workout.

F45 was first founded in Sydney in 2013, and now has 1,749 studios across 67 countries.

David Beckham was first announced as an ambassador for the brand in 2021. At the time he shared the news on social media, crediting the high-intensity interval training regimen as helping him get into his “best shape” since he retired from his superstar soccer career in 2013.

Dietitian reveals what supermarket ‘health food aisle’ items to avoid

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 2:05 am

When looking for ‘healthier’ options at the supermarket many of us likely head to the ‘health food aisle’, but as this dietitian explains, sometimes that’s not the best choice.

Rebecca Gawthorne, known as Nourished Naturally on Instagram, has shared some of the popular products she would and wouldn’t buy.

“Which health food aisle products would a Dietitian buy?” she captioned the video (which you can watch above).

Sugar-free chocolate chip cookies may sound like a great go-to if you have a sweet tooth, but Rebecca says they are “a no from me”.

“These are too heavily processed for my liking, and I’d much rather enjoy a regular cookie without all of the additives,” she adds.

Virgin coconut oil is another popular ‘health food’ Rebecca says she would avoid.

“This is an over-hyped heath product rich in saturated fats and I prefer to buy other oils as my primary cooking oil,” she says.

“I wouldn’t purchase this regularly.”

Roasted pumpkin seeds made the list of items she would add to her cart.

“These are rich in healthy fats and a good source of nutrients like magnesium and zinc. I would definitely buy these,” she says.

She would also “definitely purchase” the dry roasted mixed nuts.

“These are an excellent source of healthy fats, contain plant protein and minerals like iron,” Rebecca notes.

The Best Fitness Watches for Strength Workouts in 2022

After a demanding workout, it’s validating when your watch notices the effort you exerted. Wearing a fitness tracker during your strength workouts, whether you’re deadlifting or rowing or powering through a bodyweight routine, is like having a personal coach on your wrist keeping track of your progress and your overall health, too. Fitness watches make it easier than ever to get deep insights into your workouts and performance.

Some features to look for when shopping for a watch for workouts include heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen testing, recovery time estimates, and sleep and stress tracking. Bonus features include GPS tracking for outdoor efforts, music integration to keep you entertained, and downloadable meditation and workout sessions to mix up your strength sessions.

Keep in mind the size and comfort of fitness watches as well (though these characteristics can sometimes be tricky to gauge online). Most brands have generous return policies, but always check before you buy. You don’t want your watch getting in the way of pushups or floor routines. The good news? Fitness watches and trackers are generally more affordable than the beefier mountaineering and cycling watches while still offering some of the same metrics.

Below, we’ve detailed the specs and benefits of six of the best fitness watches and trackers for strength workouts.

Powerlifter Shahram Saki Squats 510 Kilograms, More Than the Raw W/Wraps All-Time World Record, in Training

When it comes to lifting incredible amounts of weight, Shahram Saki should get comfortable in the spotlight. The Iranian powerlifter’s latest mark might be his most outstanding strength achievement yet.

On May 12, 2022, Saki shared footage of himself squatting 510 kilograms (1,124.36 pounds) during a training session. While unofficial because it occurred outside of a sanctioned competition, Saki’s figure surpasses Daniel Bell’s current all-time raw w/wraps record of 505 kilograms (1,113.3 pounds). Bell achieved that feat during the 2021 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Kern US Open. Both athletes typically compete in the 120-kilogram-plus division.

Notably, some might find the depth of Saki’s squat questionable. He doesn’t — or barely does — reach the powerlifting competitive standard of below parallel (or getting his hip crease below the plane of his knees). As such, it potentially would not have counted in a full power meet.

A Powerful Profile

It’s been an eventful few weeks for Saki, to say the least.

Before notching this unofficial record squat w/wraps, the Iranian athlete recorded a 1025-kilogram (2,259.7-pound) total during the 2022 Iran Bodybuilding Federation (IranBBF) National Classic Powerlifting & Bench Press Championships in late April. That number gave Saki the highest total in Asian Powerlifting Federation (APF) history.

In the same competition, Saki broke the APF records with a squat of 440 kilograms (970 pounds) and a bench press of 235 kilograms (518.1 pounds). These three respective records surpassed Ray Williams’ 425.9-kilogram squat (939.1 pounds), 229.9-kilogram bench press (507 pounds), and 1008.4-kilogram total (2,223.3 pounds) from the 2015 APF Asia-Oceania Raw Championships.

Here’s a complete record of each of the three sanctioned competitions Saki has under his belt:

What’s Next

At the time of this writing, Saki has not announced any formal plans for his next sanctioned meet. The main updates that the athlete provides are of him capturing a usually staggering strength accomplishment on his Instagram. His feed has almost entirely consisted of heavy squats in recent weeks, which makes sense with his latest mark.

While Saki’s next competitive appearance is up in the air — for now — there is one thing to note for sure. If he can transfer over this massive squat from training (while getting more depth), he might soon be able to call himself a World Record holder.
