The Best Sport Watches for Every Type of Adventure

For a tick of a secondhand a few years back, it seemed like smartphones might make sports watches obsolete. Quickly, however, athletes and outdoorsmen realized that the best adventure-focused watches meant less fiddling with your phone and more of what you headed outside to do in the first place.

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. We update when possible, but deals expire and prices can change. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission. Questions? Reach us at shop@mensjournal.com.

Our favorites are long-lasting, stylish, and pack in easy-to-use features that enhance your time outdoors instead of forcing you to focus on tech when you’re heading outside to unplug. For those reasons, the Garmin Fenix 7X Pro – Sapphire Solar Edition is our top overall pick. Most adventure watches retail under $1,000 and we highlight watches at a range of price points and share options from fully analog to the most connected, digital options available.

What You Should Look for in an Adventure Watch

Adventure watches can be analog, digital, or a hybrid, but the best ones are waterproof, durable, and provide metrics such as altitude, humidity, navigation, and, of course, time. Smart adventure watches go further and bring maps, GPS route tracking, and biomarker monitoring to your wrist. Here are the key features to compare when shopping.

Mapping

Many watches incorporate built-in maps, which allow you to leave the phone at home or at least reference it less often. The combination of internal compass and readable maps right in the watch turn these timepieces into powerful navigation devices whether you’re out for a run or embarking on a multi-day backpacking trip. Most offer downloadable maps as well, meaning they work without being tethered to a phone or data connection. The mapping features often include powerful route-building tools so you can lay out runs, bikes, and hikes at home and easily follow them out in the field. Most of the map packages are free but Garmin also offer a premium mapping package for a $50 annual charge that, like other subscription mapping services such as OnX and Caltopo, adds property ownership layers and more detailed contour lines.

Solar Charging

Solar recharging of watch batteries has been around since the 1970s, but the tech has drastically improved and is showing up in high-end adventure watches to extend the relatively short battery life of these energy-hogging digital watches. Solar charging easily keeps traditional watches and smartwatches running few features charged indefinitely—given cooperative weather. In high-consumption modes, you’ll likely need to supplement with charging from an external power source. But no matter how you run them, the solar charging capability will extend the battery’s runtime and is worth paying a bit extra if you hate dealing with low battery warnings or spend time away from reliable power on multi-day excursions.

Cellular Connection

The more mainstream smartwatches (most of the Apple and Samsung offerings) can access wireless data networks without tethering to your phone. Most fitness-first watches from brands such as Suunto and Garmin do not, meaning you’ll either need to keep your phone on you for messaging and other connected apps and download maps for offline use. Having a data connection for your phone makes it much more capable but it also drains the battery faster and almost always requires an additional line of data on your wireless plan which usually costs around $10 per month.

Why You Should Trust Me

After refusing to wear a watch for a decade (figured my phone had the time), backpacking and backcountry hunting made me appreciate using my phone less for telling time, navigation, and tracking. Since then, I’ve tested many of the major releases from brands like Garmin, Suunto, Timex, and Casio. The Garmin Fenix 7x is my current go-to but I also cycle in the Suunto 9 Peak and Nixon Regulus for certain outings.

Best Overall Outdoor Watch: Garmin Fenix 7X Pro – Sapphire Solar Edition

This is the GPS watch for the outdoor athletes that want it all. Garmin has a bewildering array of full-featured tracking watches for racers and adventurers, but the Fenix 7x Pro Sapphire Solar edition brings together fitness tracking and navigation features as well as any watch to-date. To get the most out of the significant investment here, you’ll need to value the robust fitness tracking features from sleep monitoring to ECG heart rhythm monitoring to stress and endurance scores to help you dial in your training. For outdoor adventurers, it’s the maps and navigation tools that seal the deal. The GPS uses multi-band tech for maximum accuracy and you get altitude and compass readings like any good outdoor watch. But the mapping stands out with premium features such as golf course maps, ski area maps, suggested routes back to your start, and even turn-by-turn directions for at-a-glance wayfinding when you’re moving fast.

Casio G-Shock Mudmaster

Best Rugged Watch: Casio G-Shock Mudmaster

Casio’s G-Shock line has defined military-grade rugged dependability in the adventure watch category for decades. The display is digital but this watch has an analog feel with no email notifications in sight but all the essentials such as date, time, temperature, altitude, compass, and solar charging for near-infinite operation away from power sources. Buttons are large, protected, and easy-to-use in any conditions and though the watch looks chunky, it’s fairly slim and streamlined as far as outdoor watches go. And while this isn’t a full-featured fitness tracker watch, it does add in a Bluetooth connection option to record routes, step counts, and elevations.

  • FEATURES: Bluetooth, shock/mud resistant, LED backlight
  • SIZE: 55.4mm

Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar

Best Outdoor Smartwatch: Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar

Suunto’s new Vertical packs their best fitness and navigation features into their latest flagship outdoor watch. One big improvement over earlier watches from Suunto is the addition of solar charging to minimize the annoyance of needing a charge when you most need your watch. (That said, the Vertical and similar watches take a charge quickly if you just need enough juice to track your next ride or run.) The other major feature rollout is free downloadable maps—that don’t rely on your phone or cell signal—that are easily readable on the 49mm face.

  • FEATURES: GPS, solar charging, free maps
  • SIZE: 49mm

Coros Apex 2 Pro

Best Hiking Watch: Coros Apex 2 Pro

Coros owns a smaller share of the GPS smartwatch category, but their Apex 2 Pro stands out for delivering most of the great tracking features from Garmin and Suunto but in a slim, understated watch that doesn’t get in the way. The price tag is also about half of what you’d pay for many of the other watches, yet it still includes built-in free and interactive mapping. The battery life is excellent but the GPS tech isn’t as robust as other brands’, so tracking and navigation don’t have quite the same pinpoint accuracy.

Best Luxury Adventure Watch: Norqain Neverest GMT Glacier Grey & Gold 41mm

Seeking a wear-everywhere outdoor watch with luxury Swiss styling and rugged dependability? Neverest is Norqain’s ode to Everest and the intrepid spirit of sherpas. The GMT watch boasts an anthracite grey dial with gold cracks running across the surface to mimic the crevasses found on Everest. Daytime hours are indicated in white and night-time hours in black. The knurling on the edge of the ceramic bidirectional-rotating bezel makes adjustments easier when fingers are cloaked by gloves. Moreover, the automatic-winding NN20/2 movement is visible through the sapphire glass case back, and you can engrave the plate on the left side of the case. Perhaps the biggest selling point is Norqain’s partnership with Butterfly Help Project: 10 percent of all Neverest watches are donated to the charity in Nepal, which aids families of sherpas who’ve lost their lives while guiding, giving their children access to education.

  • CASE: 316L stainless steel case

More Adventure Watches We Love

Best Tactical Outdoor Watch: Nixon Regulus Expedition

Courtesy Nixon

Nixon’s Regulus watch blends tactical with practical. This updated version stands out for keeping things ultra-simple and staying easy to read and operate in any conditions. The all-digital display doesn’t try to cram too much in. The numbers are large and displays are uncluttered unlike many outdoor watches that try to pack too much into a readout. Likewise, the buttons are large and easy to operate with cold, wet, or gloved hands. You won’t be consulting topo maps on the display, but there is basic journey tracking for runs and hikes and the battery lasts for years. Plus, you get all the essentials such as temperature, altitude, and compass—which can all be made primary displays in the same simplified readout format as time and date.

  • FEATURES: 2-year battery life, high-definition screen, weather alert
  • SIZE: 47.5mm
  • STRAP: Silicone

Best Stylish Outdoor Watch: Casio Pro Trek Solar x Pendleton

Courtesy Casio

While a bit less chunky and rugged than its G-Shock siblings, the Pro Trek delivers most of the same features and thus is a great choice for guys that want a rugged, outdoor-minded watch but with a more streamlined design. The Pro Trek is slimmer and lighter and because it’s less overtly tactical, and works better as an everyday wear watch than the G-Shock line. The Pendleton collab we’re featuring here has a unique patterned band with great style for outdoorsy guys. Beyond the aesthetics, you get a combination of analog timekeeping and digital date display. Use the buttons to toggle from date to the other essential readouts: altitude, compass bearing and temperature. Because of the streamlined feature set, this isn’t a battery hog smartwatch, but just in case, this Pro Trek augments battery power with solar charging.

  • CASE: Stainless steel/resin
  • FEATURES: Barometer, solar charging, auto LED backlight
  • SIZE: 51.6mm
  • STRAP: Fabric

Best Budget GPS Outdoor Watch: Suunto Race

Courtesy Suunto

This new release from Suunto provides most of the same features as the Vertical but with a more digestible price tag for folks that don’t want to spend nearly $1,000 on a GPS smartwatch. The AMOLED display delivers better contrast than the more-common LCD displays, and makes reading the offline-ready maps a joy while out on a hike or run. The biggest difference from the Vertical is the lack of solar charging, but the battery life is still excellent for a GPS watch and, for many, the need to charge a bit more frequently will be worth the savings of several hundred dollars over the Vertical and similarly priced GPS watches. The Race’s battery life depends greatly on how many tracking features are enabled. With absolutely everything on from 24/7 heart-rate monitoring to notifications, you’ll get an estimated 40 hours, while in a stripped-down standby mode, the device should make it about 26 days on a single charge.

  • CASE: Stainless steel or titanium (an additional $100)
  • FEATURES: Touchscreen, high-definition screen, GPS, free maps
  • SIZE: 49mm
  • STRAP: Silicone

Best Minimalist Outdoor Watch: Timex Ironman x The James Brand

Courtesy Timex

The Timex Ironman, first released in 1986, was one of the original sports watches, adding lap timing to the digital watch basics of time and date. The INDIGLO backlighting comes on with the touch of a button for nighttime visibility, and you can time up to 30 laps in the built-in memory, a functionality that hasn’t changed much in nearly 40 years. Rather than trying to keep pace with more high-tech watches, this Ironman collaboration with The James Brand leans into retro with bright colors, a lightweight fabric band, and low-profile face that’s unobtrusive on the wrist but stands out from the crowd.

  • CASE: Resin
  • FEATURES: Customizable alarm, 30-lap memory, INDIGLO dial
  • SIZE: 38mm
  • STRAP: Fabric

Best Analog Sports Watch: Citizen Promaster Altichron

Courtesy Citizen

If you want the reliability of a fully analog watch, but still need outdoor-oriented features such as altitude, it’s hard to beat the rugged Promaster Altichron from Citizen. While most of the watches on our list deliver the ABCs (altitude, barometer, compass) digitally, the Promaster Altichron manages altitude, date, and time through more traditional watchmaking engineering for a classic look and reliable functionality. And despite being a higher-end watch brand, the price tag is still less than most of the top-end GPS watches.

  • CASE: Stainless steel
  • FEATURES: Compass, 32,000 feet altimeter, solar charging
  • SIZE: 47mm
  • STRAP: Polyurethane
$437 at Amazon

Best Analog-Digital Hybrid Watch: Garmin Instinct Crossover Solar

Courtesy Garmin

Garmin leads the GPS smartwatch category with feature-rich, tech-heavy watches such as their Fenix 7x, but their Instinct has an interesting hybrid design that combines analog time hands with digital display. Despite a lower price tag, there’s also solar charging and a ton of tech here. Pay without a wallet using Garmin Pay, track outings and view it all on your smartphone, and receive email, text, and other notifications on your wrist.

9 Best Resistance Workout Bands, From $9 to $69

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. We update when possible, but deals expire and prices can change. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission. Questions? Reach us at shop@mensjournal.com.

Looking to do some more working out from home? It’s great do be able to just roll outta bed and get your reps in without having to leave the house. No more dealing with crowds and ridiculous subscription fees. But you do gotta take some things into account, like how much space you got to work with. And with the space you got, you gotta get gear that can fit.

One of the best items for working out at home is an item that can be used in any home and those are resistance bands. From the most lavish homes to the most compact apartments, you can use resistance bands anywhere you want. And now that the weather is getting warmer, you can use them outside as well as inside. They are amazing.

What are resistance bands? They are stretchy bands, usually made with rubber or even nylon, something stretchy and durable. You hook them up to a doorframe or something like that, or you use them on their own to help add more resistance to workouts. Hooking them up to door frames can even make them good replacements for free weights.

Using resistance bands is great for the convenience. You can do so many different workouts with them and you’re not just limited to upper body workouts. You can get the whole body going for a sick workout any day of the week. You’ll be getting nice and ripped just in time for beach season, all from the comfort of your own home.

The Kinds Of Workouts You Can Do With Resistance Bands

One of the best things about Resistance Bands is the variety they offer up in your home gym. It’s not like picking up a dumbbell where you’re only getting your arms worked out. You can do a whole bunch of different workouts and focus on different kinds of goals.

For example, you can use them to do the kinds of heavy-duty workouts needed for strength training. Heavy-duty resistance to really bulk those muscles up with bands that just won’t break. Or you can do lightweight training to sculpt your body. Even go for rehab workouts so you can come back from an injury to the best of your abilities. It’s even great for highly specific goals like training your arm to become a better pitcher in baseball.

Not to mention the amount of variety it offers you in the broad strokes of getting your home gym fully equipped for full-body workouts. You can do arm day and leg day without having to go to a different piece of equipment. If you’re new to the workout game, you can use them to assist you in doing pullups, so your whole body weight isn’t making it too difficult on you.

Whether you are working out your core or your arms or legs or you just want to stretch before you hit the road for a long run, resistance bands are hard to beat. They are incredibly durable and offer a variety of workout options hard to find anywhere else, especially for a home gym. So if you want to get a set for your home, check out the best resistance bands we have picked out for you guys below.

Types of Resistance Bands

With resistance bands, you pretty much have two options to work with. You got the ones that can be hooked up to a doorframe or a wall or whatnot, giving you more options to work with when it comes time to workout. Or you can get the free bands, smaller options that are to be used in tandem with other workouts to give them just a little more of a kick. The ones that get hooked up to something can be used in both ways, but the ones that don’t come with a hookup system and are to be used on their own are useful for only that kind of system. It all depends on what you’re looking to do. Build up the body or tone the body.

Average Price Range

One of the best things about resistance bands is that, for the most part, they don’t cost too much. You can find a lot of them for around $13 to $40. Some higher end ones can be grabbed at around $80 or thereabouts. But generally speaking, these won’t break the bank and will end up giving your home gym quite the range of workout possibilities. That’s a lot of bang for your buck.

What Else To Look For

When it comes to picking up resistance bands for your home gym, you got a lot of options to work with. Like anything in the fitness world, there are a lot of options. So you gotta try to find the best. The ones that are affordable yet incredibly durable. Well made so you don’t end up getting hurt during a workout. And we have found some of the best out there for you guys. So all you gotta do is scroll on down to pick up the one that works best for you.

Kelsey Wells shares an advanced ab workout with a twist

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 5:05 am

This is a 10-minute advanced abs workout inspired by Sweat trainer Kelsey Wells’ new Redefine Fitness: Strength & Mindfulness Program.

The circuit-based workout is suitable for intermediate and advanced fitness levels and incorporates targeted exercises that will help build strength in your abdominal muscles.

“This is a workout that I have designed exclusively for Nine Honey readers to give you a taste of what my new program is all about! All you’re going to need is the space of a workout mat,” Kelsey tells 9Honey.

The workout also includes mindfulness techniques, to help you redefine your relationship with exercise and maximise your ‘me time’.

“We will start with setting an intention for our workout before moving into the Abs circuit, and finally end with a moment of gratitude,” she adds.

You can watch the full workout above!

10-minute Advanced Abs Workout

Warm-up: Kelsey recommends taking a few minutes to warm up prior to working out. 3-5 minutes of cardio, such as jogging in place or skipping, will help increase your heart rate and help warm up your muscles for your session.

Intention Setting – 30 seconds

Take a moment to ground yourself in the room, in your body and set an intention to exercise from a positive place.

Remind yourself that your movement is to care for yourself and your health, and your movement is to thank your body and all that it does for you. Bring your hands to your heart centre and breath deeply to connect your mind and body.

Start your workout with Intention setting for 30 seconds. (Nine)

Circuit – complete three laps

1. Bent Leg Raise & Hip Lift – 30 seconds

Step 1: Lie on your back on the yoga mat and place both hands by your sides. Extend both legs and engage your abdominal muscles by drawing your belly button in towards your spine. This is your starting position.

Step 2: Inhale. Exhale. Bend your knees and, using your abdominals, bring them in towards your chest. Allow your lower back to lift off the mat to allow full contraction of your abdominals.

Step 3: Inhale. Slowly lower your back to the mat and extend your legs to return to the starting position, but without lowering your feet to the floor. Repeat for the specified number of repetitions.

2. Single Leg Alternating Jackknife – 30 seconds

Step 1: Start by lying straight on your back on a yoga mat with your legs extended out in front of you. Bend your elbows and place your hands behind your earlobes. Gently raise both legs and your head and shoulders off the mat. This is your starting position.

Step 2: While keeping your right leg extended, elevate your left leg so that it is at a 90-degree angle to your hips. At the same time, extend your right arm to bring your hand up towards your left foot— slowly lifting your head, shoulder blades and torso off the mat.

Step 3: Lower your torso, shoulder blades and head to the mat. Lower your left leg and place your right hand behind your earlobes to return to the starting position

3. Straight Leg Toe Taps – 30 seconds

Step 1: Start by lying straight on your back on a yoga mat with your legs extended out in front of you. Bend your elbows and place your hands behind your earlobes. Gently raise your legs off the floor so that they form a 90-degree angle at your hips. Engage your abdominal muscles by drawing your belly button in towards your spine. This is your starting position.

Step 2: Inhale. Exhale. Extend your arms to bring your hands up towards your feet — slowly lifting your head, shoulder blades and torso off the mat.

Step 3: Inhale. Lower your torso, shoulder blades and head to the mat and place your hands behind your earlobes to return to the starting position. Repeat for the specified number of repetitions.

4. Straight Leg Raise – 30 seconds

Step 1: Lie on your back on a yoga mat. Extend both legs and engage your abdominal muscles by drawing your belly button in towards your spine. This is your starting position.

Step 2: Inhale. Exhale. While keeping your legs extended, slowly raise your legs upwards until they form a 90-degree angle with your hips.

Step 3: Inhale. Slowly lower your legs to return to the starting position, but without lowering your feet to the floor. Repeat for the specified number of repetitions.

Finish with Gratitude Practice – 30 seconds

Take a moment of gratitude after your workout – place one hand on your heart and one hand on your stomach. Feel your breath and your heart beating.

Be proud of the effort you put in and thank your body for carrying you through that session and for all that it does for you.

Cool-down: Kelsey recommends completing a cool-down session after your workout. 3-5 minutes of walking will help to slowly lower your heart rate to normal levels and help your body to cool down after a workout. You might also like to complete some static stretching as part of your cool down, where you hold a single position for twenty seconds or longer.

The workout trick that could improve your mental health

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 5:05 am

Most of us know by now that incorporating some sort of mindfulness into our day — whether that be journalling, gratitude practice, or meditation — can have a massive positive impact on our overall mental health, along with physical activity.

But when it comes to finding the time to do so, especially if we’re already trying to commit to regular exercise, no doubt there are many of us who have simply put it in the ‘too-hard’ basket.

This is where Sweat trainer Kelsey Wells may have just come up with the most brilliant solution. Simply incorporate mindfulness into your actual workout.

This is why you should be including mindfulness in your workout. (iStock)

Kelsey recently launched her new Redefine Fitness: Strength & Mindfulness program, available in the Sweat app, which actually incorporates mindfulness techniques with strength training, and aims to help reshape how we actually approach fitness.

“It’s a program that I felt called to create for a long time. It is the culmination of my personal fitness journey, and everything I have learned over the years from all of the women I have trained and spoken to online,” Kelsey tells 9Honey Coach.

“Up until I was 24 years old, I thought fitness was the ultimate chore. I never thought exercise could be used as a tool to help care for my mental health.

“However, after I had my son, I was diagnosed with postpartum anxiety and depression and my doctor suggested that I try exercise as a way to help me cope mentally. I was very skeptical, but it did help in more ways than I could have ever imagined – it changed everything for me.”

She says one of the most common questions she received as a trainer was how to exercise from a positive place.

“I combine three mindfulness based tools that I personally use that I truly believe can help others make that shift too – intention setting, affirmations and gratitude practice.

“Each training session begins with a moment of grounding yourself through your breath, and setting an intention for your workout before you even begin.”

Kelsey adds the powerful techniques can completely change the way you think about exercise as well.

“For a long time I’ve known that mental, emotional and physical health are not separate from each other,” she adds.

“When you take the time to get intentional with what’s happening in your mind while you are exercising, it’s a game-changer. Exercise should never feel like a punishment, or a chore, nor should you be criticising yourself throughout it.”

Kelsey has shared an exclusive workout incorporating mindfulness for 9Honey readers, which you can watch above and try at home.

Fitness studio introduces robot employee for sanitation – Heart of Illinois ABC

Filed under: Fitness — admin @ 3:57 am

PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) – A local gym is leading a global initiative, becoming a testing ground for a disinfecting robot.

Peoria-based Pringle robotics manufactures machines to help with a variety of tasks, like delivery and service at restaurants. Now, they’re working to find an easy solution for businesses to keep clean during the pandemic. They started with schools like Hickory Grove, later moving to local hotels like Par-A-Dice casino in East Peoria to test their efforts.

Now, Styles Studios Fitness is the first fitness facility to have its own sanitizing robot, equipped with a ‘dry mist’ dispenser and UV lights. It’s designed to take several laps around the facility during closing hours, getting every surface and corner that might be exposed to the environment. Now, Pringle says many others are already expressing interest in getting their own.

“We are trying to work towards increasing the levels of sanitization,” says Pringle founder Sudheer Sajja. “We don’t want the next virus to actually shut down economies.”

When a staff member at Styles heard about ‘Rosie’ (the name the facility gave to the bot), they knew it was right for the business. Styles sees it as the next step in protecting customers, while making them feel more comfortable as the pandemic continues. Pringle is also installing air quality sensors, a measurement Rosie can take if needed.

“It’s really exciting to be a part of something that is in the pioneering stage, and is growing, and is local,” says Styles owner Carrie Kepple.

Dietitian explains why you’re always hungry

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 3:05 am

Hunger, like thirst and fullness, is a normal physiological sensation.

Hunger is controlled by a complex array of hormonal, physical and neural pathways which send various signals to indicate that it has been several hours in between meals and it is time to refuel.

The tricky thing about hunger is that it can be influenced by our eating behaviour, and as such programmed over time to override our baseline physiological needs.

READ MORE: How many calories do you really need?

Different people may also experience hunger differently, with some extremely sensitive to the slightest feeling of hunger, while others may barely be aware of it and literally have to remind themselves to eat.

In the case of extreme hunger, or hunger that is almost insatiable, it is not a comfortable feeling with all thoughts and energy diverted to seeking satisfaction. Constant hunger can also be suggestive of dietary inadequacies that are driving the urge to seek out food.

So, if you find yourself constantly hungry, here are some areas of your diet to take a closer look at.

You need more carbs

Extreme diets that promote ultra-low carbohydrates intakes of 50g or less are notorious for driving cravings and unsatisfied hunger. As the brain and the muscles rely on glucose as their primary fuel source, chronically low intakes can drive appetite even when calorie intake is adequate.

READ MORE: Navy seal tactic for an eight-minute nap: ‘Best nap of your life’

The brain and the muscles rely on glucose as their primary fuel source.

In the case of ketosis, in which carbohydrates and calories are low enough to start the conversion of fat mass to ketones, hunger may be repressed. In more cases than not though, carbohydrate intake remains too high for ketosis yet too low to adequately fuel the muscle and hence the extreme drive to seek out sweet foods to help restore glucose levels.

The average person will need a minimum of 80-100g of carbohydrate each day, with much higher requirements for those who are training regularly; wanting to gain weight or who have higher energy demands thanks to pregnancy, breastfeeding or just busy, active lifestyles.

You are eating too much sweet food

A diet that is relatively high in refined carbohydrates such as white bread, rice and processed snack foods, can result in fluctuating glucose levels and cravings for more sweet food.

READ MORE: How many calories in your favourite coffee?

The easiest way to take control of these cravings is to ensure that every time you enjoy a meal or snack you combine protein-rich foods such as meat, chicken, fish, dairy, legumes or nuts with a source of good quality carbohydrates such as wholegrain cereal, crackers or bread, fruit or grains.

This will help to slow digestion and regulate the hormones that control appetite. Examples of balanced food combos include cheese and crackers, yoghurt and fruit, eggs on wholegrain toast, or salmon with brown rice.

Your eating times need an overhaul

If you are one of the many people who do not notice hunger when you wake up, or through the morning, before being overcome with the need to eat and snack throughout the afternoon, it is a sign you may need to take a look at the time of day you enjoy your meals.

Late afternoon hunger often results in overeating throughout the afternoon and evening and so the cycle simply repeats.

Reversing this cycle can be as simple as having a light meal such as soup or salad for your dinner and then fasting for 12-14 hours. Over time you will start to notice hunger within an hour or two of waking so you can enjoy a balanced breakfast and early lunch and avoid the extreme drive to eat carbohydrate-rich foods late afternoon.

Eating too late could be impacting your hunger levels in the morning. (iStock)

Your hormones need checking

Extreme, unexplained hunger, minus calorie or carbohydrate restriction or extreme training, may be suggestive of an underlying hormonal disturbance such as insulin resistance — especially if you are carrying extra weight, and are having trouble shifting it.

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas and high levels of insulin over time can drive the desire to eat ac fuel is not being metabolised as efficiently as it should be. If you have a family history of diabetes, or had gestational diabetes and find you are constantly craving sweet foods even after eating, it may be worth checking your insulin levels.

MADRID, May 1 (Reuters) – Rafa Nadal said his fitness was “far from perfect” as he prepares to return to action after a debilitating rib injury that has left him racing against time to get back to peak condition for the French Open.

The 35-year-old, who clinched a men’s record 21st Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open earlier this year, suffered a stress fracture in his rib at Indian Wells, where he lost in the final to Taylor Fritz on March 20.

The injury has forced him to miss the claycourt events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

He is now battling to get back to his best before the French Open, which begins on May 22 and where he will bid for a record-extending 14th title.

The Spaniard will make his return at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid Open on Wednesday.

“I’m recovered from the injury but tennis and preparation is another story,” Nadal told a news conference on Sunday.

“Those who have broken their ribs know how much it limits you and for the first few weeks I had difficulty sleeping because of the pain.

“It is an injury that does not need significant time to heal, but it didn’t allow me to do almost anything. It hurt even doing aerobic work.”

Nadal believes he will struggle to get back to his best this week, but it will be a step towards hitting peak condition for Roland Garros.

“Things are far from perfect, right now. I have to admit that,” Nadal said.

“I’m taking these days almost like a preseason, doing double sessions every day. This tournament suits me very well and I have to take it this way. If a victory can come, then fantastic. But the goal is for what comes ahead.”

Nadal said he had not had time to savour his outstanding comeback win against Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final in January.

“Tennis is not a sport that allows you to look back and enjoy your accomplishments,” Nadal said.

“I understand that was a historic moment, one of the biggest emotions that I had in my career, but I just don’t have the time to look back and appreciate it. The last few weeks were all focusing on recovering from my injury.

“If I keep playing today at my age and at the highest level it’s because I learned that wins and losses are something you leave in the past. You have to always look forward to keep that focus and competitive hunger alive. That’s the way I operate.”

Navy seal tactic for an eight-minute nap: ‘The best nap of your life’

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 3:04 am

A man has revealed a navy seal tactic for taking the “best nap of your life.”

In a video shared to TikTok, Nick Vitello shared the unique trick telling followers, “Here’s what to do when you’re super tired but you only have eight minutes.”

As the clip continues, Vitello positions himself lying down beneath his bed – he then proceeds to lift his legs over the bed while keeping his back on the ground.

Speaking to the camera Vitello says, “Get on the floor and put your feet up on the bed like this or on something high, a couch, anything.”

“Set a timer for eight minutes and take the best nap of your life,” he adds.

Vitello dubbed the sleeping a hack a “navy seal trick” and promised followers that “it works.”

The video garnered plenty of internet attention, racking up over 1.1 million likes and thousands of comments from users who expressed mixed responses to the trick.

One user got 50,000 likes on a comment that read, “I envy people who are able to fall asleep instantly.”

Another joked, “I have been on the floor for over 24hrs (awake).”

A third wrote, “took me 15 minutes to fall asleep, now I’m negative seven, and my cat left me.”

Earlier this month, a doctor on TikTok purported that the secret to falling asleep is keeping your feet nice and toasty before you head to bed.

The reason? Well, having cold feet can constrict your blood vessels and result is less blood circulation around your body. So warm feet may actually help lower your core body temperature.

In the video, Doctor Jess Andrade, says that “wearing socks makes your feet warm and this opens up the blood vessels that cools the body down.”

“The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time to go to bed, so actually, people that wear socks tend to fall asleep faster,” she explained.

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 9:04 pm

When it comes to Aussies and their love of coffee, to say some are obsessed — despite the sometimes ridiculous price tag these days — could be an understatement.

But if you’re grabbing a brew more than once or twice a day you could be adding a huge amount of calories to your diet without even realising.

Here we’ve looked at some of the most popular coffee, and other hot drink orders, and ranked them according to how many calories they contain. The great thing is there are many that offer a host of extra benefits than simply being a pick-me-up.

2022 Giants Live Strongman Classic Lineup

The 2020 World Strongest’s Man Champion (WSM) and 2022 Europe’s Strongest Man (ESM) Champion, Oleksii Novikov, enters the 2022 Strongman Classic as the reigning winner. Evan Singleton, Chieck “Iron Biby” Sanou, and a host of other contenders will try to supplant Novikov in London.

Here’s the full list of expected athletes for the competition:

2022 Giants Live Strongman Classic Event Rundown

Below is a preview of each event for the competition and what the respective athletes can expect.

Dumbbell Medley

The Dumbbell Medley was not an event at the 2021 Strongman Classic. That said, as much as the other strongman will assuredly put their best foot forward, the event should favor Novikov. The Ukrainian athlete possesses the heavy dumbbell press for reps world record. With 100-kilogram (220-pound) dumbbells, he notched a staggering 11 reps in 75 seconds at the 2020 World Ultimate Strongman “Feats of Strength” series.

Novikov was also the only competitor to successfully lift all five dumbbells during the Cyr Dumbbell Ladder at the 2021 Rogue Invitational. While there could always be a surprise from some of the world’s top strength sports athletes, he’s the likely leading contender for the opening event.

The Pillars of Hercules

A classic strongman event, the Pillars of Hercules — or the Hercules Hold — asks the athletes to hold a massive pillar in each hand for as long as possible. Usually, the competing athlete does not know how long they have held the pillars until the final result. Though, later athletes do benefit from knowing the time they have to beat before they’re up.

Since it is an event with an upper-body strength and grip focus, Sanou could be the big winner here.

The current owner of the world log lift record with a 229-kilogram press (504.8-pound) from the 2021 Giants Live World Tour Finals, Sanou also won last year’s Hercules Hold when he held the pillars for over 75 seconds.

Mark Felix — who owns the Hercules Hold world record from the 2019 Giants Live World Tour Finals — might be the athlete to overtake Sanou.

Farmer’s Carry for Distance

The Farmer’s Carry centers around movement and speed in carrying staggering weight across the finish line. Notably, Novikov won the 2021 Frame Carry, which is a somewhat close model of the Farmer’s Carry.

Axle Deadlift

Last year’s fourth-place finisher, Adam Bishop, will likely be the favorite on the Axle Deadlift. The 2020 Britain’s Strongest Man (BSM) winner locked out seven reps at 350 kilograms (771.6 pounds) during the 2021 competition. Novikov was not far behind (six reps) and could notch the respective victory on this occasion.

Castle Stones

It wouldn’t be a strongman event if it didn’t feature some variation of the famed Atlas Stones. Last year’s Castle Stones winner, Tom “King of the Stones” Stoltman (five in 16.97 seconds), is not participating in this year’s competition.

Stoltman’s absence should leave the door open for the final event. Novikov, Bishop, and Singleton — who all finished five reps within a second of each other in 2021 — could find themselves on the podium thanks to a great Stones performance.

On to London

Given the rigors of the one-day competition, a repeat won’t be easy for Novikov. Come early July in London, with a roster of stellar strongman talents across the board, who the ultimate winner will be is anyone’s best guess.
