Study Reveals How Much McDonald’s Prices Have Risen Since 2014

Amid talk that fast food prices have risen precipitously, Finance Buzz conducted a study to determine just how significantly prices have increased along with inflation.

To obtain the data, Finance Buzz compiled price points for the menus of a dozen separate fast-food chains from 2014 until 2024. It was then calculated how much the prices had increased in that period, compared to the inflation rate during the same timeframe.

The results determined that rising fast food prices have indeed outpaced inflation, with the restaurants in the study having raised prices anywhere from 39 to 100 percent over the decade. Since 2014, the cost of goods has only risen by 31 percent.

McDonald’s was found to be the chain which saw prices spike most significantly. The company has actually doubled the prices of some popular menu items since 2014, marking an increase of 100 percent. Some of the more common items have seen even higher increases.

McDouble and McChicken sandwiches, as well as medium-sized French fries, have seen increases approaching 200 percent. McDoubles now cost $3.19 on average, compared to $1.19 in 2014; and medium fries now cost $3.79 compared to a measly $1.59 a decade ago. At many locations, the McChicken sandwich—formerly a $1 staple on the chain’s value menu—has risen to $3.

Other significant price hikes on the McDonald’s menu include the Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal and the chain’s Chicken McNugget combo; both of which come with fries and a drink. While they cost just $5.39 and $5.99, respectively, in 2014; the meals now run $11.99 and $10.99 on average.

Finance Buzz

Popeyes came in just behind McDonald’s, with average price increases of 86 percent since 2014. The fried chicken chain was followed by Taco Bell (81 percent) and Chipotle (75 percent).

Still, some items at those restaurants have increased far more than the average. Back in 2014, you could get a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito for just $1.59 at Taco Bell. In 2024, that price has risen 132 percent to $3.69. Likewise, the price of a Cheesy Gordita Crunch has doubled from $2.49 to $4.99.

At Popeye’s, a four-piece chicken dinner that cost $6.99 in 2014 now totals $13.49, an astonishing increase of 97 percent.

Shubhranshu Singh, an associate professor of marketing at Johns Hopkins University, explained why fast food chains are seeing such a steep increase in prices. “Food prices are outpacing inflation. Wage rate is also rising faster than inflation. In other words, the cost of preparing and serving fast food is rising faster than the inflation rate.”

But Daniel Roccato, a professor of finance at the University of San Diego, says that “the worst is behind” us in terms of fast food price increases.

“Consumers have reached a tipping point,” he explained. “Fast-food operators have increased prices faster than the overall rate of inflation and that is especially hard on their core consumers. We won’t see prices drop, but we can expect a pause,” Roccato surmised.

The trend seems to be reversing, at least slightly. McDonald’s recently pledged to be more affordable in 2024 after the chain’s $18 Big Mac meal at a Connecticut restaurant caused an uproar after going viral.

Five tips to find the best weight loss diet that will actually work for you

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 1:04 am

With dieting, the conventional wisdom says a person needs to be in calorie-deficit mode to lose weight.

If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight; if you eat fewer calories, you lose weight.

But is that view really right? Doesn’t the kind of food you consume (keto, low-fat, vegan, etc.) and how often you eat (time-restricted eating versus six small meals) matter, too?

READ MORE: A dietitian’s guide to resetting your diet after Easter indulgence

Many studies have shown the conventional wisdom — calories in/calories out — is mostly true.

“It is not the only thing, but it is the main thing. And it’s mostly diet, not exercise, because exercising makes you hungrier and you eat more calories,” Christopher Gardner, the Rehnborg Farquhar professor of medicine at Stanford University, told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on the podcast Chasing Life recently.

Gardner, who is also the director of nutrition studies at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, has spent decades studying nutrition and food patterns.

He was the senior author of a November 2023 study published in the journal JAMA that looked at the cardiometabolic effects of a healthy omnivorous diet versus a healthy vegan diet in identical twins, which was made into the 2024 Netflix limited series You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment.

Gardner said a very methodical and comprehensive analysis of approximately 20 different diets was published jointly by the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the Obesity Society in 2013.

“And at the end of the day, they said, bottom line is on every one of these diets, people lose weight when there’s a calorie deficit. That was one of the main conclusions, and it was sort of as simple as that.”

But Gardner will be the first to say that there are many important nuances — such as the calorie deficit needed to lose a pound only grows as time on a diet progresses.

“People’s bodies react to that (deficit), and they become more metabolically efficient,” he said. That’s why people’s weight loss starts to plateau.

“So the longer you do this and the more weight you lose, the more discouraging it becomes, because it actually takes more effort to lose the next pound, which is psychologically demoralising for some people.”

READ MORE: Moment Shannon Noll knew he had to change his health habits

Stock image of a woman measuring her hips.

There’s another nuance to diets (based on his own research and that of others): Within each type of diet — keto, vegan, low-fat, etc. — some people will lose weight, and others will gain.

“The difference between the diets was just a few pounds. But the difference within each diet was 60 pounds (about 27 kilos),” he said, discussing his 2017 DietFITS study, noting somebody gained 10 or 15 pounds (about 4-6 kilos) while another lost around 50 (about 22 kilos). “There’s this huge range of variation.”

So, what’s the secret to successful weight loss? According to Gardner, there are two aspects.

“So, kind of the key to this calorie deficit is it’s stopping your meal soon enough to not overeat and having a long enough space till the next meal, so you’re not making up for that calorie deficit in the next few hours,” he said.

WATCH: How many calories can you burn doing common household chores?

How many calories can you burn doing common household chores

He said he now believes a large part of weight loss success comes down to satiation, noting that what leaves people full can vary greatly.

“I often ask people in some of my talks, ‘Would you be more full and for longer on steel-cut oats with nuts and berries or with cheesy eggs?’ … I often get half the audience saying one (thing) and half the audience saying the other.”

What can you do to maximize your changes of losing weight and keeping it off? Here are Gardner’s top five tips.

Cut back on low-quality carbs and added sugars

Stock image of donuts and sugary treats.

Wean yourself off what Gardner calls “crappy carbs.”

“For most people decreasing or eliminating as much added sugar and refined grains will be the biggest bang for your buck,” he said via email, adding that the average American tends to get more than 40 per cent of calories from low-quality carbs and sugars.

READ MORE: Intuitive eating is redefining the way we perceive nutrition

But replace those carbs wisely

You can’t just eliminate all those calories from low-quality carbs without replacing at least some of them.

“Shift to adding foods rich in fiber,” Gardner said, listing items such as beans/legumes (which he thinks Americans don’t get enough of), vegetables, whole intact grains and fruits.

In addition to fiber, add “sources of unsaturated fat (such as) avocados, nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, fatty fish, whole fat yogurt.”

Stop before you’re stuffed

Stock image of two women eating and drinking wine.

Practice mindful eating. Pay attention to what you are eating and how you are feeling.

“Experiment with satiety/satiation. Try the Hara Hachi Bu principle of eating until you are 80 percent full, then stopping,” Gardner recommended, referring to the Okinawan practice of putting down your fork when you are slightly full rather than completely full.

In essence, it’s an easy way of restricting calories because it allows your body and brain to register how much you have eaten.

(It takes a moment for your brain to get the message from your belly that you have eaten enough.)

Change your mindset

Your food choices must be sustainable over the long run whether you pick a diet low in fat, low in carbs or high in protein or choose to follow a Mediterranean, vegan, keto or Paleo diet.

“Don’t think of this as a ‘diet’ that you are going ‘on’ (and) that you will go ‘off’ when you are done,” Gardner said in an email.

“It needs to be a dietary approach you can follow FOREVER for the benefits to last.”

For that approach to work, he said, you need to feel satiated, not deprived and hungry all the time.

Show yourself some compassion

Acknowledge it’s not easy to change eating habits to lose weight.

“Be kind to yourself and patient,” Gardner said.

“Most people struggle with this. If you beat yourself up psychologically, for setbacks it can be even harder the next time you make an effort.”

Find joy in what you eat

Gardner had one final bonus tip: “You need to find joy and pleasure with what you are eating,” he said. “Allow yourself that for long-term success.”

Arthritis, titanium rods, hit-and-run can’t stop Nick’s bid to run across Australia

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 12:04 am

Doctors warned Wellington man Nick Ashill he might struggle to walk again after he was hit by a pick-up truck while running across the United States seven years ago.

His pelvis smashed and his right leg badly broken, Ashill persevered through a long period of rehabilitation and numerous surgeries.

In 10 days, he will set off on a 4000km across Australia.

While he loves to run, he’s also got a bigger goal with his cross-continent journeys – to raise money for people living with respiratory disease.

It’s a cause he decided to support after seeing his mother fighting to breath with the rare lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). She died in 2015.

His desire to embark on another long run at the age of 59, despite still having some “discomfort” as a result of the 2017 hit-and-run came down to his purpose, his “why”, Ashill said.

“Finding the direction that puts fire in your belly is what it’s all about. To me it’s respiratory disease, and generating more awareness of it.”

For a daily dose of 9Honey, subscribe to our newsletter here.

Ashill said it had taken him some time to come to terms with the fact the driver of the pick-up that hit him near Columbus, Ohio – on day-81 of his run across the US – was never found, but he had forgiven them.

Even in the first few days after the incident, when it was touch and go as to whether he would pull through, he had been thinking about completing the 5400km run across the US.

In 2022 he did it, but only after a long, arduous, painful rehabilitation.

“I had no idea it would take me three years to be able to run 10km after the hit-and-run,” Ashill said.

“Moving from a hoist to a wheel chair to a crutches to a cane… I got there in the end, but it took a lot of time and perseverance. There were times I wanted to give up.”

While he had recovered, with titanium rods and screws in his right leg and pelvis, his running had been affected.

“As a result of the accident my running gait has changed. It has shortened because of the lack of flexibility on my right-hand side,” Ashill said.

“But I can still run. I’ve lost a bit of my speed but my endurance is still there,” he said. “My pelvis stays in one place now.”

He also has some arthritis, but said he only noticed it for the first couple of kilometres until he warmed up.

An important part of preparing for his run across Australia had been going to the gym six days a week during the past year to strengthen his core.

“That has had a huge impact on my recovery times between runs,” Ashill said. “I was strongly advised … that maintaining a very very strong core was critical for me to get back running.”

The idea of running across Australia came to him when he was at the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ awards in early 2023.

“I got very emotional that night hearing those stories, and thought maybe my body can do another cross country run,” Ashill said.

It’s thought he will become just the fifth person to have run across both America and Australia.

A Black Diamond Rain Jacket That’s ‘Extremely Lightweight and Packable’ Is Up to 35% Off and Selling Out Quickly

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Outdoor gear brands like The North Face, Patagonia, and Arc’teryx have become streetwear staples and are as popular on the trails as they are on city streets. On the other hand, Black Diamond has mainly focused on serving the mountain climbing community and is best known for making gear like harnesses and carabiners. Thankfully, you don’t have to know what belaying is to wear the brand’s apparel, including one of its most popular rain jackets that just went on sale at Backcountry.

Black Diamond’s Wind Shell Jacket was recently marked down to as low as $91—up to 35% off the normal $140 price. This lightweight, breathable layer has earned over 65 five-star ratings from shoppers who use it for everything from alpine running to hiking in the Southeastern US. It’s on sale in the Sulphur color, a subtle yellow hue, and is still available in sizes small through XL, though that could change quickly.

Since it’s performance-minded, the jacket does sacrifice some creature comforts in the name of cutting weight and bulk. There are no hand pockets, though the large zippered chest pocket offers secure storage for items like a phone, wallet, or sunglasses. This pocket also doubles as a packable pouch; the entire jacket packs into this pocket, and there’s a loop for clipping it to a bag for convenient carrying. Suitable for light rain, the jacket’s water-repellent finish keeps you dry in mild weather and is infused into the fabric itself. According to Black Diamond, this means you don’t need to treat it a second time with a spray. The jacket uses reliable YKK zippers, and the chest zips up to the chin for extra protection from the elements. The hood is also climbing helmet compatible.

The jacket is a popular option with climbers, but shoppers also use it for running and cycling. One called it “perfect for biking and hiking,” adding that “it is exactly the type of layer I was looking for.” Another wrote, “I mostly use this as a backup jacket for biking. It fits well in a back jersey pocket.”

A shopper who initially bought it for climbing wrote, “I also bring it running when the weather is questionable. You can fold it up small enough to shove in a running fanny pack.” Another runner called it “great for winter/springtime running,” adding, “It keeps you completely dry in the rain and snow without making you sweat.”

Others simply enjoy it because it’s a lightweight jacket for dealing with the sporadic spring weather. One shopper called it “extremely lightweight and packable” and summed up its appeal by calling it the “perfect jacket for spring.”

Black Diamond’s Distance Wind Shell is a great jacket for any hiker, cyclist, runner, or climber to stash in their gear bag, but it’s also great for more leisurely activities like walking the dog in cooler weather. Now up to 35% off, this discount offers a chance to get a high-quality piece of gear with lightweight construction that won’t slow you down. Consider picking one up for yourself while it’s still in stock.

Dietitian reveals the foods to eat which will help boost your mood

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 1:04 pm

We have known for some time that certain foods can have a big impact on how we feel on a day-to-day basis.

While some foods like dark chocolate or coffee may instantly give us an energy hit, we now understand that our general mood is influenced much more powerfully by our daily food patterns. Different nutrients work together to influence the health of the gut and the production of the key neurotransmitters that directly impact mood and mental health.

So, as we move into the cooler months, here are some key foods to focus on, and some to avoid if your goal is to keep your mood and mental health on track.

READ MORE: Dietitian explains why you might be feeling extra tired

Seafood

Containing some of the highest amounts of omega 3 fats of any fresh food, bumping up your intake of oily fish including Atlantic salmon, sardines (if you like them) and tuna is a must if your goal is to optimise your mood.

Numerous studies show that individuals who consume high amounts of the special fats, DHA and EPA, found in most oily fish are less likely to suffer from mood disturbance. These specific fats are known to help regulate the neurotransmitters that regulate mood.

While salmon is especially rich in these special fats, all seafood is a smart dietary addition through the winter months, offering a range of essential nutrients including Vitamin D as well as small amounts of Omega-3 fat.

Nuts and seeds

It has been known for some time that including a handful of nutrient rich nuts and seeds in the diet each day adds protein, good fats, selenium and Vitamin E to the diet.

Specifically, when it comes to mood, nuts are rich in the amino acid tryptophan, which is involved in the production of serotonin, the feel-good hormone.

Seeds and some nuts including walnuts and pepitas are also some of the richest natural sources of the plant-based form of Omega-3 fat.

Bananas

Bananas are especially rich in the B group vitamin, Vitamin B6, with a single banana offering almost 1/3 of your entire daily recommended intake of Vitamin B6 – a nutrient that is involved in the production of a number of neurotransmitters, including serotonin which is involved in mood regulation.

There is also growing research to show that supplementing with Vitamin B6 may help to improve the symptoms of anxiety and low mood, which is even more reason to include a banana a day in your diet, especially at this time of year.

Fermented foods

As our understanding of nutrition grows, it becomes increasingly clear that the health of our gut plays a significant role on our overall health and well-being.

This means that nourishing our gut with the right types of dietary fibre, as well as feeding it with live cultures to keep our bacterial balance healthy, is one of the most powerful ways we can help to support immune function, mental health and well-being.

This means that a daily serve of fermented foods, such as kefir, yoghurts with probiotics or supplementary probiotic foods are an easy, yet powerful way to support optimal mood as well as digestive function.

And to avoid at all costs

While there are a handful of good mood superfoods, it is important to remember that it is not only about adding certain foods to our diet, but also minimising our intake of the foods associated with poorer mood.

Specifically, there is a strong relationship between a high intake of ultra-processed foods, like fried and fast food, processed snacks, biscuits, cakes, pastry and soft drink, and an increased risk of depression.

Ultra processed food also increases systematic inflammation in the body and, as such, the less we consume in general the better.

It is best to enjoy processed treats and takeaway food at most a couple of times each week, as opposed to multiple serves per day.

How to avoid body clock ‘shock’ as daylight saving ends

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 2:04 am

The sun has started to dip behind the clouds and the woolly sweaters are coming out from storage as the winter months creep around the corner.

This weekend marks the end of daylight saving time and with it we farewell the warmer months.

While Aussies in Queensland, the Northern Territory or Western Australia can go about as normal, the rest of us will see our clocks fall back an hour at 3am on Sunday morning.

READ MORE: Daylight saving is ending this weekend – here’s what to do

Woman sleeping with sleep mask

Thankfully, the shift means Aussies get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday and early risers will be treated to more light in the morning.

While the change won’t have any drastic impact on our routines and sleep patterns it may leave us feeling a little out of sorts for a few days until our body clocks adjust.

The good news

Health psychologist and CEO of the Sleep Health Foundation Dr Moira Junge explains that our body’s circadian rhythm, which is essentially our body’s internal clock, is very reliant on light and dark cycles.

This being so any time change, even by an hour, can offset our body’s natural rhythm. Fortunately, the effect on our bodies is much less dramatic this time round than when our clocks sprang forward last Spring.

READ MORE: Tragic story behind new Diana photo: ‘We were very much in it together’

Tips for turning your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary

“The good news is this particular weekend for us in the Southern Hemisphere, we get an extra hour of sleep,” she explained.

“So mostly people are very happy with that, but nonetheless, their body clock will be out by an hour.”

How to adjust to the end of Daylight Saving time?

When the clocks fall back, Junge suggests that Aussies make the most of the extra morning light.

She says that getting exposure to light first thing in the morning is the best way to adjust “as quickly as possible”.

She encourages people to “get out in the light” for at least half an hour in the morning if they can.

It is this early exposure to light that “resets your body clock” and “suppresses melatonin” helping individuals feel more alert for their days.

According to Junge, most people will adjust naturally “within a few days” but for those who worry about the adjustment there are some things they can do to prepare.

READ MORE: Expert reveals behind the scenes truth of Kate’s cancer video

Junge says Aussies could try shifting their bed time and wake up times by 15 minute increments in the days leading up to Sunday so the “big hour difference isn’t as much of a shock”.

The Sleep Health Foundation has also listed several strategies people can use to adjust. These include eating a good breakfast, exercising outside in the morning, avoiding caffeine drinks in the evening and attempting to get between seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Being extra mindful of these important sleep strategies in the coming days can help Aussies settle into the new routine, Junge says.

For those who may struggle with the adjustment or have other struggles or concerns around their sleep health, Junge suggests reaching out for professional assistance.

Aussies sleeping better in winter

Thankfully, Aussies can expect to sleep better in the coming months as the days become shorter and colder.

Junge, who spent decades speaking with people about their sleep in her role as a psychologist specialising in sleep disorders, says anecdotally people seem to sleep better in winter.

This is in part due to the cooler weather and darker evenings but also due to people generally being less busy during the winter period.

“[Sleeping in] the summer months was harder for [some patients] because there was more light, there was more heat and more activities,” she explained.

“The winter months were much better for them.”

The little ones

Unfortunately this may not be so for those living with little ones.

“Little kids don’t get the memo,” Junge says.

With even the slightest change having the capacity to throw a sleeping routine out of whack, parents can prepare for a few rocky nights.

READ MORE: What you need to know about your child’s sleep as daylight saving ends

A happy baby laying in bed

Fortunately there are some preparations parents can make for the coming changes including slowly shifting bedtimes and using block out blinds.

Healthy sleep for healthy lives

While the end of Daylight Saving has Aussies thinking more about their sleep, the Sleep Health Foundation believes it is important to focus on sleep all year round.

In our modern society that is filled with artificial light and busy schedules, many Aussies are sleeping poorly.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, almost half of Australia experiences inadequate sleep.

With healthy sleep being essential for physical and mental health, the foundation says “promoting better sleep should be a priority for all Australians”.

This feature-packed sling bag is the ideal travel companion and is a great option for photographers, commuters, or anyone who needs to carry a little extra than what they can fit in their pockets. It has a 7-liter capacity but weighs a minuscule 220 grams, allowing you to carry more without weighing you down. It’s made from a polyester ripstop fabric that’s been sourced from recycled plastic bottles and is abrasion-resistant yet eco-friendly. It has an expandable gusset that allows the bag to widen when fully stuffed but stays slim on days when you’re carrying less.

The zippered front compartment has internal organizers for quickly accessing your essentials, and the main compartment has an innovative two-way zipper that opens up wide so you can quickly find what you’re looking for. Other handy features include a key clip to prevent front-door fumbling and a zippered internal compartment designed for sunglasses. The magnetic clip makes it easy to take the bag off, and the strap is adjustable to fit different body sizes.

The bag has also proven to be very popular with travelers. It’s a great option for keeping your essentials safe without having to carry a whole backpack. One shopper who used it for air travel wrote, “It stays on my body with the bare minimum critical things I don’t like to have separate from me (e.g., iPhone, passport, wallet, keys, etc.).” Similarly, another shopper said, “I use this bag for when I’m on a trip and want something to carry around just a few items. Fits a bottle of sunscreen, e-reader/book, wallet, and some miscellaneous items well.”

The Bellroy Lite Sling is a great bag for anybody looking to keep their must-haves close to their bodies without interfering with their style. The over-engineering comes at a cost, but Bellroy’s gear sale makes getting a great piece more attainable. These deals won’t last forever, so make sure to pick up your next favorite accessory before they shoot back up in price.

Some outdoor survival gear can be expensive or require a Bear Grylls-level of know-how to use. But a personal water filter is inexpensive, easy to use, and can be a literal life-saver if you find yourself in a tight spot. LifeStraw is at the forefront of this category, taking Amazon by storm with nearly 100,000 five-star ratings from shoppers who say it’s legit. Now that spring hiking and travel is underway, the brand has dropped its prices to their lowest since January.

The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter is on sale for as low as $13 on Amazon right now—up to a 35% discount on the normal $20 price. This simple survival tool is the No. 1 bestseller in its category and a top-10 bestseller among all sports and outdoor products across the entire site. The filter is also available in packs of two, three, and five, which are currently up to 35% off.

The LifeStraw features a membrane microfilter that removes bacteria and parasites, including E. Coli, Salmonella, and Giardia. Plus, it’s capable of removing microplastics. The filter is activated simply through suction, meaning it doesn’t require any mechanical equipment to use. The straw also has caps on the bottom and top ends, which keep dirt and debris out when not in use. Loops near the mouth of the straw make it easy to attach a paracord for convenient carrying. A single LifeStraw can filter up to 1,000 gallons, and it has no expiration date.

Shoppers appreciated the peace of mind that comes with using a LifeStraw. One shopper called a “lifesaver in the great outdoors,” adding, “This filter is a game-changer, removing 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of protozoan parasites without the need for iodine, chlorine, or other harsh chemicals.” Another shopper agreed, saying it’s “essential for outdoor adventures,” and that “the lightweight design makes it easy to carry.”

Beyond peace of mind, shoppers were impressed when they put the LifeStraw to the test. “We were a little scared to try it at first, but we watched the online tutorial and read the instructions and gave it a try,” a shopper attested. “The water tasted very clean and we did not get sick.”

One hiker found themselves without sufficient water in the Grand Canyon in “100-degree heat.” They wrote, “When a creek appeared, I whipped out the LifeStraw and drank to my throat’s content. This was flowing water and while not brown, it was clearly not potable. Drinking from the LifeStraw was pleasant (aside from needing to get down on all fours to reach the water level) and tasted as good (if not better) than the clean water at the rest stations.”

Whether you’re looking for a personal water filter for your car’s emergency kit or you want something to take out in nature, consider picking up an affordable, lightweight LifeStraw now that’s as low as $13. They’re a great tool to have for spring treks, international travel, or just in case, and they also make great gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
