New Research Reveals What Makes the Perfect Campsite

You might think when people are picking campsites, they’d be influenced by views or distance to bathrooms. And, if you asked them, that’s what they may say, too. However, a new study in the Journal of Environmental Management says the biggest factors in picking the perfect campsite are price and the availability of electricity.

Camping is in the midst of a renaissance, much of it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the KOA’s 2021 North American Camping Report, 48 million households went camping once in 2020. That’s about 10 million households more than went camping in 2019. In addition, more than 50 percent of those 48 million say they’re going to camp more in 2021. Of course, this increase in interest also means greater demand on available outdoor resources. And that’s where the new study comes in.

The study is the work of Will Rice, an assistant professor of outdoor recreation and wild land management at the University of Montana, and Soyoung Park, an assistant professor of hospitality and tourism management at Florida Atlantic University. The researchers went through 23,000 reservations at the Watchman campground in Utah’s Zion National Park. Variables such the nearest dump station, number of neighboring campsites, and river access were used to sort campsites. In addition to electricity and price, proximity to Virgin River, and ease of access were also big motivators.

In an article on the University of Montana website, Rice says the data they gathered should be relatable to many Americans who camp. “For instance, anyone who has ever picked a campsite within a campground has certainly dealt with the dilemma of proximity to the restroom. I mean, we want to be close enough to make navigation easy in the middle of the night. But not so close that we’re smelling it and listening to the door open and close all night.”

Rice says what sets this study apart is the emphasis on revealed preferences (what people do). Previous research on recreation decision-making relied on stated preferences (what people say). According to Rice, a “big data” approach can help influence how outdoor resources are used in the future.

“Since the 1960s, park managers—in collaboration with researchers—have been trying to figure out how people make decisions when choosing campsites, trails, or any number of recreation facilities,” Rice says. “This information is vital for recreation planning, not only for improving visitor experiences, but also for ensuring the protection of ecological resources and fair allocation of recreation opportunities.”

Revealed: Dark family secret driving Huni to greatnessPaul Gallen and Justis Huni

Filed under: Outdoors — Tags: — admin @ 9:18 am

The dark family secret driving Justis Huni to boxing greatness is confronting.

Huni’s uncle, Maamaloa Huni, was sentenced to 20 years’ jail in 2013 after attempted murder, bashing a love rival before driving over his head with a car.

Watch Paul Gallen v Justis Huni on Main Event available on Foxtel and Kayo, Wednesday 16 June at 7pm AEST. ORDER NOW >

It was a horrific attack, and explains why Justis is so determined to overturn the stigma of his surname and make “Huni” synonymous with success and inspiration.

“That’s what it’s all about, making a positive impact to this world, that’s all I’m trying to do,” Huni said.

“If I can inspire young ones coming up to stick to their dreams and their goals, and work hard at it, they can get there one day.”

Huni’s father and boxing trainer, Rocki, has risen at 3.45am six mornings a week for the past 15 years to follow his son during his morning road runs.

At first it was in his car. These days it’s on his bike.

It’s not comfortable, but he does it to keep his boy on the straight and narrow path.

“My brother is in jail, he’s been incarcerated, what he did wasn’t good, but this is why my kids fight in the ring, and not out in the streets,” Rocki said.

“I don’t want my kids to end up like me or my brothers.”

Justis’ older brother Lopeti has also spent time inside a jail cell.

But he has turned his life around, influenced by his younger sibling’s discipline and dedication. Lopeti had given up his own boxing dreams, but has dropped nearly 20kg and plans to embark on a professional career later this year.

As for 22-year-old Justis, the love for his uncle hasn’t changed, and neither has the promise he made him as an eight-year-old boy who declared he would one day unify the heavyweight division.

“My uncle Loa, I’d say he was one of the uncles I was closest with, I was always around him growing up, I used lay on him to wake him up,” Justis said.

“I used to go around everywhere with him. He had this black Commodore and we used to roll around everywhere.

“This is so long ago, this was when Hummers were big. We were driving around and we saw one, and I promised him I’d get him one, one day.

“Still to this day I hold that promise.

“He’s inside, he’s locked up, but when he gets out I’ll definitely have that Hummer waiting there for him.”

Rocki was hesitant when Justis announced he was leaving school in Year 11 to put all of his focus on becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion, but understood his motivation.

“He’s had that dream from a young age,” Rocki said.

“He told my brother when he wasn’t even a teen. My brother still remembers, Justis was eight years old, he came to watch Justis spar, and to this day he remembers what Justis said, that he’d buy him a car.

“He was always talking about a Hummer, he always tells Justis: ‘Hey Justis, don’t forget that promise you made to me about that Hummer’.

“My brother will never forget those words Justis said to him to buy him a Hummer, he doesn’t let Justis forget.

“He watches the news in jail all the time, and people tell him what Justis has been doing. All he wants is newspaper clips, anything that involves Justis, he wants.

“He tells everyone, everyone in jail knows who Justis is.”

As he prepares to defend his Australian heavyweight title against Paul Gallen, before embarking on the journey to Tokyo where he plans to win Australia’s first boxing gold medal, Justis is grateful to be carrying the surname for his family.

“It means the world to me that I have that effect on people, it’s the same as my brother-in-law, he’s inside at the moment as well, and inside he hears a lot of people talking about me,” Huni said.

“I was really close with my brother-in-law as well, it’s awesome that my name is going around and people are starting to talk about me now.

“Everything is starting to happen and my dreams are coming true.”

THE CHILDHOOD TRAUMA DRIVING GALLEN’S BOXING DREAM

It’s the childhood trauma that Paul Gallen won’t talk about, but has given him all the confidence that he can defeat Justis Huni for the Australian heavyweight boxing title.

In 2014, Gallen was fined $50,000 by the NRL and forced to undergo a leader’s accountability course before he was allowed to represent the Kangaroos again.

This was after he’d made offensive remarks on Twitter about the exit of Cronulla chief executive Steve Noyce and the NRL’s handling of the Sharks’ ASADA-imposed doping sanctions, for which he served 12 weeks.

Watch Paul Gallen v Justis Huni on Main Event available on Foxtel and Kayo, Wednesday 16 June at 7pm AEST. ORDER NOW >

“I remember when I got in trouble from the NRL, and they made me do that course,” Gallen said.

“I remember some of the things I learnt about myself during my childhood. I learnt a fair bit about myself then, and why I am like I am.

“It’s not something I want to go into, this isn’t the platform. But I know why I am like I am. And a lot of it comes down to my upbringing and what I had to go through.

“I just want to be successful.”

It is this intrinsic understanding of how he is wired, how he managed to play 19 seasons in the NRL, win a premiership, captain NSW to a State of Origin series victory, switch to boxing to beat Mark Hunt and then knock out former world champion Lucas Browne, that has allowed Gallen to needle Huni mercilessly.

The 22-year-old Australian heavyweight champion may know his boxing game inside out, but is still learning much about himself as a man.

And this is what 39-year-old Gallen has seized upon in a bid to gain the mental edge, where physically he is outgunned by a younger, faster foe.

“I’m so far in his head it’s not funny,” Gallen said.

“He says I’m not, but I know I am. That’s the question that remains to be answered, isn’t it? He can‘t handle the pressure at the moment. Whether he can handle the ring or not remains to be seen. But there’s no doubt about it. He’s really struggling with the pressure in the build-up to this.

“I can just see his actions and his body, facial expressions, just the way he talks.”

Gallen said it was “disgraceful” and “selfish” that Huni had snubbed an appearance on Fox Sports’ NRL 360 show on Monday night.

“He can’t handle pressure, can’t handle the expectation, I’m going to apply pressure to him in the fight and expose him,” Gallen said.

“I told you from the start, he’s an unbelievable fighter, skilful, fast. He’s got everything. But there’ a chink in that armour.

“In the past, he’s been in no-show. He was a no-show [on Monday] night.

“I’ve found a little chink, he doesn’t like the pressure and I’ve got to try and expose it.”

Huni replied: “If he says all that stuff and then can’t back it up, he’s a fraud.”

As for his absence from NRL 360, Huni said: “It wasn’t told to me firmly, we did make dinner plans, I had family come in so I wasn’t going to cancel that, a lot of them travelled a long way to be here.

“[Gallen] can say what he wants, I had plans and that’s that. If he’s got a problem with it, he can sort it out [on Wednesday] night.

“In this fight I will show my boxing skills, and I don’t think Gal will stand a chance.”

AUSTRALIA’S ANSWER TO TYSON’: HUNI’S IRON MIKE TACTIC

Peter Badel

Justis Huni says he will inflict the first professional defeat of Paul Gallen’s career by using a tactical style that made his boyhood idol, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, a heavyweight legend.

Huni (4-0, 3KO) is a man under siege entering Wednesday’s fight against Paul Gallen (11-0-1, 6KO) with the NRL legend labelling the Australian heavyweight champion a mentally-weak fighter who will choke under pressure.

The quietly-spoken Huni has been caned by Gallen in the media war of words, but he has vowed to let his fists do the talking in their 10-round heavyweight bout at Sydney’s International Convention Centre.

Huni will be world-ranked by the IBF if he disposes of Gallen and while he has been criticised for lacking knockout power, the Brisbane-born 106kg hulk says he wants to be Australia’s version of Iron Mike with a ruthless style of sustained pressure.

“Like Mike Tyson, I’m not the biggest or tallest heavyweight,” Huni said on the eve of his Gallen showdown.

“If the knockout comes, I will jump on it, but I like breaking opponents down, just like Mike Tyson did.

HOW TO WATCH PAUL GALLEN VS JUSTIS HUNI

Boxing fans can watch Paul Gallen vs Justis Huni live stream on Kayo. The start time is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16 at 7pm AEST / 5pm AWST. The PPV price is $59.95.

“I am probably average in size compared to the top heavyweights in the pros like Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

“But I train with a style to beat the biggest guys. My angles, my head movement, I like to get on the inside.

“When Mike Tyson threw a combo it was explosive and I’ve tried to copy that.

“He used to put everything into every single punch. He was ruthless. That’s what I loved about Mike Tyson.

“I haven’t had a proper knockout yet, I know that, but even if I can break my opponents down, that’s good enough for me.”

While Gallen has launched a series of attacks on Huni, even accusing his father Rocki of allegedly living out his boxing dreams through his son, the reigning Australian heavyweight king refuses to get into the gutter.

Huni failed to drop Christian Tsoye in his most recent bout three weeks ago, but there was a feeling ‘JPH’ chose not to hit top gear as he chased the conditioning of a 10-round fight.

This time, Huni says if he senses Gallen is in trouble, he will go for the jugular.

“Look, Gallen has done well for himself in boxing. He is fit. He is not a bum, I’ll give him that,” Huni said.

“I don’t think I have fought to the best of my ability. I still have a lot to prove. There is a lot of stuff I can do that I haven’t shown yet.

“In my fight against Tsoye, I was looking for rounds, but I won’t be taking my foot off the pedal for Gallen.

“If I sense Gallen is wobbling or there is an opening for me, I will step it up and finish him off.”

Huni’s promoter Dean Lonergan said the world-title hopeful will bring Gallen’s soaring boxing career crashing to the canvas.

“At the same time in his career, Justis Huni is a better fighter than Joseph Parker,” he said.

“Parker went on to win the WBO world title and he is still in the frame today.

“One of the reasons we are putting Justis up against Gallen is to expose him to some pressure from a media point of view.

“Everything is being sat up for Justis to have a shot at a world-title, however he cannot afford to stumble, so he must beat Gallen … and beat him convincingly.

“There is zero chance of Gallen winning. Justis Huni will knock him out for all Queenslanders.”

Fitness To Drive re-write needs a re-think: NatRoad – Big Rigs

Filed under: Fitness — admin @ 2:28 am

The National Transport Commission (NTC) needs to go further in its pursuit of making its Fitness To Drive guidelines more user-friendly and push for serious reform, according to NatRoad, which lodged its submission to the NTC’s review of its Assessing Fitness To Drive Guidelines (AFTD).

NatRoad says while it appreciates the NTC’s commitment to making the AFTD more readable, the review should have gone further.

“This is a policy area ripe for reform,” said NatRoad CEO Warren Clark. “We want new and expanded national fitness to drive standards and it’s disappointing that proposals we’ve put forward are viewed as ‘out of scope’.”

Clark said a new FTD standard should incorporate greater medical disclosure and reporting of conditions that affect the driving task, and more consistent medical reporting, examinations and associated licensing requirements.

“The current review of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) needs to consider putting a driver fitness for duty standard in a revised law.

“Current state and territory licensing arrangements mandate only minimum competencies and medical fitness to drive standards that fall well short of the health screening that our members want.

“We’d like to work with regulators on a FTD Standard that separates the commercial standards in the current guidelines and adds a series of screening tests for conditions like diabetes, sleep apnoea and psychiatric illness.

“We must have stronger criteria based on principles of risk management.”

Clark added that the current AFTD guidelines are not suited to managing competency and fitness to drive on an ongoing basis.

“They are not specific to heavy vehicles, are limited to driving tasks, and are not intended for use for regular health checks.

“NatRoad members use the AFTD guidelines as a de facto fitness for duty standard in lieu of anything more suitable.”

Celebrating the Return to Sport With Track & Field, the Original Olympic Sport

Running is the everyman’s sport. It blurs the barriers of age, size, and ethnicity. The barrier to entry isn’t dependent on status or money. You grind in free spaces—back roads and dirt trails—with nothing more than the shoes on your feet. With track and field, those sentiments only heighten. You grow as an individual, but benefit the team. The teachings learned therein transcend sport. You learn where to push, when to stay in your lane, and how to lean into discomfort. And its origins as a spectator sport are far-reaching.

Track and field’s history can be traced back to 776 BCE, when it was helmed as the first Olympic sport—remaining the only event at the Games until 724 BCE. Freeborn Greek men sprinted equivalents of 200 meters and 400 meters; competed in distance events; and duked it out in the pentathlon (discus toss, javelin throw, long jump, sprinting events, and wrestling). Athletes who earned a place on the podium received sealstones—similar to our modern day medals—a gemstone typically bearing an engraving of Nike, a winged goddess that personified victory. In Greek mythology, she was a messenger of the gods, typically shown with a wreath or ribbon with which to crown triumphant athletes.

Nowadays Nike’s a titan in a different sense. The company is a stalwart of speed. Its iconic Swoosh adorns the shoes of some of the fastest runners on Earth hailing from all corners of the globe—from Kenya to Oregon, Nike’s birthplace. The University of Oregon’s Hayward Field is where the origin story begins.

In 1973, the fledgling company signed its first athlete: Steve Prefontaine, a gutsy 22-year-old distance running prodigy. Ancient Greek athletes were valorous in that competing in chariot racing often resulted in being mangled or trampled to death—but that’s what fueled the crowds. They got drunk off the danger. Prefontaine understood the draw. He approached running—or better yet, racing—with a warrior spirit and gave it the same appeal as watching horses thundering around a circus. He wasn’t timid. He went out hard, never doubting his endurance or speed would falter.

Nathan Buckley’s 218-game career as Collingwood coach has ended on a massive high note with his Magpies surviving a late surge to topple the ladder-leading Melbourne by 17 points in a Queen’s Birthday stunner at the SCG.

After controlling proceedings for most of the day, Collingwood got out to a 20-point lead early in the final quarter. However, Melbourne strung together four scoring shots in a row late in the game, but luckily for the Pies, only one of them was a goal to Ed Langdon and after Brayden Maynard took a match-saving mark deep in defence with less than a minute to go, the ensuing transition ended up with club stalwart Steele Sidebottom who fittingly iced the cake for Buckley with a goal after the siren.

On a day that saw another 11 sliders participate in the annual Big Freeze at the MCG before the match, to honour the legendary Neale Daniher and help raise funds for his courageous fight against MND, the 16th-placed Magpies caused the biggest upset of the season in handing the Demons just their second loss of 2021.

Buckley and Collingwood have gone together like a horse and carriage for a very long time, given he spent 26 years at the club as coach, assistant coach and one of the side’s greatest ever players, and his players sent him off in fitting fashion, playing with renewed freedom after being unshackled by the burden of expectations.

Melbourne’s backline is usually the most organised in the competition, but it was uncharacteristically disjointed, allowing the Magpies 18 marks inside 50 – their previous high for the year was 15 – while down the other end, the Demons could only manage nine.

But Melbourne’s usual pressure wasn’t there either, the premiership favourites laying just 44 tackles, well down on their season average of 64 per game. And with a clear advantage in that category (52-44), the Magpies out-hunted their more-fancied opponents for longer.

The first quarter was a scrappy affair which was punctuated by numerous turnovers from both sides. The combined AFL average for clanger kicks per quarter this season is 11, and there were already 19 committed at the 24-minute mark of the first term. That figure ballooned out to 41 at the 20-minute mark of the third quarter.

But just as it did against a couple of other top-four contenders in Port Adelaide and Geelong recently, the unattractive nature of the contest suited the Magpies just fine. They then increased their pressure, cleaned up their disposal and sped up their ball movement in the second quarter to boot four goals in a row, including a pair to Brody Mihocek, before taking a 16-point lead at halftime.

Like they did against Brisbane last week, Melbourne lifted its intensity after halftime, registering 10 of the first 11 inside 50s to kick the first three goals on the way to a one-point lead late in the third quarter.

But on the back of some great work from Sidebottom in particular, the Magpies hit back hard, kicking four goals on the trot to stretch their lead to 20 points early in the final quarter.

De Goey dominates

Jordan De Goey didn’t get off to a great start when his kick across Melbourne’s goal in the opening stages missed its target and eventually led to Alex Neal-Bullen kicking the first goal of the game for the Demons.

But the Collingwood star put that setback behind him to become the most influential player on the ground. Relishing the freedom of playing mainly on the ball, De Goey was instrumental to Pies’ victory, finishing up with a game-high 33 disposals (11 contested) and seven clearances, to go with three goal assists and 11 score involvements.

Cameron controversy

A controversial moment occurred midway through the third quarter when Collingwood’s Darcy Cameron was paid a mark 20m out from goal, despite TV replays clearly showing Steven May’s hands touched the ball first. A bemused May’s desperate protestations to the umpire fell on deaf ears as Cameron coolly slotted it home for the third of his four majors to put the Magpies back in front.

Collingwood continues to own Queen’s Birthday

The result continued Collingwood’s domination of the modern-era Queen’s Birthday fixture, having now won 13 of 20 meetings with Melbourne on the public holiday, including eight of the last 10.

Pies ballet

One of the highlights of the second quarter came at the 24-minute mark when De Goey brilliantly spun out of traffic to avoid Harrison Petty and dish off a handball to Beau McCreery who performed his own pirouette, which also included a strong fend-off of Clayton Oliver, before checksiding it home from 20m out to put the Magpies 14 points to the good.

Warriors coach Nathan Brown has slammed suggestions Reece Walsh should be rushed into the Maroons squad as they look to revamp their attack in the wake of their record-breaking loss in Game One.

The wunderkind has been a revelation in attack with four tries and seven assists since he made his debut on Anzac Day, prompting calls for him to be thrown into the deep end for Game Two at Suncorp Stadium.

However, Brown – who was reluctant to let him play NRL so soon – says an Origin debut would be a huge mistake.

“It’s not in anyone’s best interests to put an 18-year-old kid in State of Origin that’s played five games of footy in the NRL and didn’t play last year because of Covid,” he said.

“I won’t make that decision. He might go out there and play well – I’m not saying he wouldn’t play well – but it’s certainly not in anyone’s best interests to have Reece at 18 in State of Origin, I don’t believe.”

Walsh missed his side’s heavy defeat to the Storm on Sunday due to suspension, and he could return in a new position after halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita went down with a season-ending pec injury.

The teenage sensation could return in the No. 6 jersey which would push Kodi Nikorima to halfback, but Brown indicated Walsh could retain his spot at fullback with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck set to shift to the wing.

“We’ll sit down and have a look to see how the team will be next week,” he said.

“Sean O’Sullivan did a good job when he came in and he’s been doing a good job for Redcliffe in the Q-Cup. We’ve got Shaun who can be a direct replacement for Chanel.

“Reece was playing fullback and Roger was playing on the wing and that was working quite well for us so we’ll try to keep it as similar as possible without making too many changes.”

Brown also confirmed the Warriors were in the market to replace Tigers-bound winger Ken Maumalo, with reports linking Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to the club.

“We’re certainly putting our feelers out there,” he said.

“We’ve got a fair list of backs who aren’t playing at the moment. We’re certainly looking at players, and his name was thrown up.”

Return of Ryan

Storm coach Craig Bellamy says Ryan Papenhuyzen is a chance to make his return from a serious head knock in the Round 16 clash against the Roosters at the SCG.

The flying fullback hasn’t played since Magic Round when he was brutally knocked out by a Tyrell Fuimaono swinging arm that saw the Dragon sent from the field, regardless of the crackdown that was introduced that week.

Papenhuyzen had only just returned from a shoulder injury and has missed the past four matches as a result of ongoing concussion symptoms that cost him a State of Origin debut.

He only recently returned to training but has a long way to go before he’s allowed back on the field, with the Storm prepared to play it safe with their attacking maestro.

“I’m not quite sure when he’ll return to play, and I don’t think anyone has pencilled or inked anything in,” Bellamy said.

“But I think Paps might be looking at the Roosters game. Having said that, that will be up to how he’s feeling and what the specialists say.

“He was very doughy for two or three weeks after (the tackle). He started back into training now, and has been for a week or 10 days. He’s still not training with the team but he’s doing his own training.

“There’s been a marked improvement over the last week to his demeanour. He was down and it was affecting him, and he’d do a bit of training and he’d get a headache. But now he seems to have turned the corner.

“We just want to make sure he’s 100 per cent before he comes back, and we’re looking forward to having him back.”
