Dietitian shares how to take control of emotional eating

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 4:03 am

Whether it’s downing a packet of Tim Tams after an especially stressful day. Or, using wine as a way to get through another relentless evening with the family.

Or, taking a trip to buy a treat from the local convenience to help you “feel better”, chances are you are using food to distract from or soothe your emotions.

While there is nothing wrong with enjoying a sweet treat or a glass of wine as a source of pleasure when the days are long, when you find yourself relying on, or overeating high calorie, ultra-processed foods regularly to make it through the day – it is a sign that emotional eating may be doing more harm than good.

What is emotional eating?

Emotional eating is a predisposition to eat in response to negative emotions, where eating a particular food is used as an unhealthy coping mechanism.

Emotional eating appears to be extremely common, with it estimated that 30-40 per cent of women use food to soothe or distract themselves from their emotions.

What causes emotional, eating?

Emotional eating may evolve for a number of reasons, and may be a learnt behaviour, even programmed in early childhood. It is also a habit that develops and becomes more firmly entrenched over time.

In the case of learnt or even subconscious programming, what may have started as a bowl of ice-cream or a treat whenever something unsavoury happened as a child, may now have become a subconscious search for sweet food whenever you are experiencing an uncomfortable emotion.

Here, the brain associates consuming a particular food with feeling better programming the brain to make a habit of seeking comfort in food. Sometimes taking the time to reflect on the correlation between self-soothing with food and early childhood experience is enough to bring this programming to one’s consciousness. This awareness can help one take control of the habit and make more mindful food choices.

In the case of habits that have formed over time, human beings do what is familiar. This means if you start to relax after a stressful day with a glass or two of wine, over time you are likely to continue this habit, every day, stressed or not.

How to take control of emotional eating?

Ultimately, the key to taking control of emotional eating, and overeating, is to learn a new way to self soothe – other than eating poor quality foods.

Taking the time to identify the emotion that you are feeling, and sitting with the discomfort of it, rather than distracting with food is the first step. Initially this may feel terribly unfordable, but as you learn to name how you are feeling, and allow yourself to feel angry, sad, disappointed or annoyed it will become easier over time. Journaling these emotions, talking about them with a friend, having a good cry, or getting a massage are all non-food ways to practice sitting with, and processing these emotions rather than using food as a distraction.

Change your environment

Perhaps one of the most powerful ways to keep emotional eating under control is to make it harder to do – if there are not a lot of snacks or drinks in the house to overeat, it becomes much harder to self soothe with poor quality food.

For this reason, limiting the amount of bad food you have available will go a long way in preventing emotional overeating as a regular bad habit you have established, and create the space and time to sit with an uncomfortable emotion and self soothe in a non-food related way.

When is emotional eating an issue?

Emotional eating is an issue when it is causing you psychological distress; when it is resulting in the overconsumption of poor quality, ultra-processed foods, which in turn may be sabotaging your underlying health goals.

A general feeling of “being out of control” may indicate it is worth taking active steps to understand the underlying drivers of your emotional eating, and seek out professional help if necessary to get it under control.

Vuori’s Bestselling Running Shorts That ‘Fit Perfectly’ Are on a Rare Sale and Starting to Sell Out Already

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Since its founding in 2015, Vuori has worked its way toward the very front of the athleisure movement, pumping the industry with better style-forward pieces that look as great as they perform. Though the brand makes some of the most comfortable performance T-shirts and running jackets, it’s a robust collection of bottoms that put them on the map, including a customer-favorite pair of shorts that just got a very rare discount.

The ultra-popular Vuori Kore Shorts are now on sale for $54 at REI—a 20% discount on the normal $68 price. This particular pair is the No. 1 bestselling style at REI and has earned over 200 five-star ratings from shoppers who use them for anything from running around town to swimming. They’re currently on sale in six exciting colorways and are available in sizes small through 2XL, though some sizes have already started to sell out.

These 7.5-inch do-it-all shorts are made with a combination of polyester and spandex that create the ultimate athletic garment. They’re moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and very breathable with some anti-odor properties that are useful when doing hot yoga or working out in a smaller gym. You get features you’d expect from a pair of shorts, like a drawstring and several pockets, but there’s one you might not have seen coming—a built-in liner.

Liners are typically only seen inside men’s swim trunks, but the idea behind the Kore Short’s built-in briefs is to offer men comfort beyond their regular drawers—with as much breathability as the best athletic underwear—without rubbing or getting in the way. The inner liner is completely breathable and also helps wick away sweat. If you’re not a liner person, Vuori also makes the Banks Shorts, which are also on sale at REI.

After shoppers try the Kore Shorts, they can’t get enough of the soft materials, the barely-there weight, and the clean-looking aesthetic. It’s often that shoppers end up coming back for more colors. “These are my husband’s third pair of Kore Shorts,” one shopper said. “He primarily uses them for indoor climbing, but they’re also great for HIIT workouts and swimming. They’re durable, well-lined, and look nice. Definitely worth the money.”

Many shoppers tell a story of how their Kore Shorts stick with them through numerous activities—a testament to their versatility. “Super comfortable, drawstring adds security to tighten when swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, or climbing,” another shopper said. “Dries quickly, which is vital, as I often go from water sports to hiking or climbing and need a fast dry. Love the liner—it’s all-in-one and I don’t need separate underwear.”

The Vuori Kore Shorts have been a brand bestseller for years, and shoppers have been more than happy to pay full price. Now that they’re on sale for $54, we’re expecting all colors to sell out quickly. If you’ve been looking for a great pair of men’s shorts for indoor/outdoor workouts, spring hikes, or tropical vacations, grab a pair of these (or two) while they’re still around.

Elijah Craig’s New Bourbon Is Rare, Flavorful, and Strong

Every year, Elijah Craig launches three unique barrel-proof whiskeys. All feature high ABVs and are packed with flavor, becoming huge draws for American whiskey lovers. Each batch of Barrel Proof is bottled with a unique age statement, including the month and year of the youngest barrel from the batch. The proof also varies with each release.

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. We update when possible, but deals expire and prices can change. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

The latest addition to the triannual tradition is A124 (‘A’ signifying the first batch of the year, ‘1’ standing for its January release month, and ’24’ identifying the year of release). bourbon comes in at 119 proof, the second lowest proof in the now 12-year-old series, only behind B521. It also features an age statement of 10 years, 9 months (which represents the youngest barrel in the batch), which is lower than the last two releases in the collection. It’s the 34th release so far.

Despite less burn and age that some associate with the best whiskeys (there’s definitely still a kick here), A124 offers the quintessential elements that have made the Elijah Craig’s Barrel Proof offerings such a hit over the years. The flavor profile is straightforward and robust, offering aromas of caramel, baking spices, and toasted oak alongside hints of graham cracker and tobacco. The palate features vanilla, cinnamon, and black pepper, while the finish is long and layered, with notes of brown sugar, baking spices, and leather.

Like the traditional Elijah Craig release, the Barrel Proof bottlings all feature mash bills of 78 percent corn, 10 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley. The next two bottlings in the collection are expected to roll out in May and September, each featuring its own blend, proof, and flavor profile.

The Glenlivet Releases New, Rare Whiskies In a Completely Surprising Way

Online whisky marketplace The Whiskey Exchange has unveiled its first exclusive offering, The Glenlivet: The Twelve Elements. The collection features 12 one-off bottles, each representing the 12 elements needed to craft Glenlivet single malt: air, barley, cooper, copper, distiller, earth, fire, heritage, time, water, wood, and angel’s share.

Unveiled late last year, The Whisky Exchange Cabinet—set up by UK-based retailer The Whisky Exchange—provides access to unique spirits sourced directly from some of the world’s most beloved distilleries. It’s a blockchain-based marketplace, so buyers of the rare spirits gain a digital record of ownership, providing traceability and security if someone ever wants to resell their rare whisky.

Two years ago, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain became a somewhat surprisingly relevant part of the high-end spirits market. Johnnie Walker, Buffalo Trace, Ardbeg, and a slew of other whisky brands released bottles exclusively available via blockchain. Since then, the popularity of NFTs has tumbled, while blockchain-enabled marketplaces like The Whisky Exchange Cabinet have continued to gain momentum.

The Glenlivet: The Twelve Elements were crafted from two single malt whisky casks that have been maturing since 1974, each selected to balance out the other. One is a first-fill American oak barrel that gives richness and structure, while the other a refill American oak hogshead that tempers the power and intensity of the barrel. The combo allows The Glenlivet’s character to shine.

“This whisky exemplifies the art of balance, where nature and human elements combine to create amazing whisky,” says Kevin Balmforth, cask master at Chivas Brothers, which owns The Glenlivet. “This truly exceptional liquid is a testament to the unique combination of the two hand-selected single malt casks. This required the patience and expertise of a long line of makers who presided over the casks for over half a century. This is one of our oldest official releases of The Glenlivet to date, a 50-year-old liquid that represents the continuous progression of our craftsmanship.”

The resulting whiskies offer aromas of soft red apple, maraschino cherries, pineapple, and apricot jam alongside notes of marzipan, cinnamon, milk chocolate, and honeycomb. The palate delivers more apricot and pineapple along with waves of carmel, dark chocolate, nutmeg, and toasted oak. The finish is long, elegant, and filled with warming spices.

Each of The Glenlivet: The Twelve Elements bottles is available for around $43,000 via The Whisky Exchange Cabinet.

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

For how simple of a garment men’s shorts are, finding good ones can be a challenge. Sometimes cheap shorts can be a little too see-through, and unfortunately, you don’t find out until you’re already wearing them. Other times, top brands will charge upward of $70 for their shorts even though they might lean heavier into style without offering enough substance. But Under Armour’s athletic shorts tend to fall perfectly in between affordability and quality, and its bestselling style is on sale right now for even less.

Right now, Under Armour’s UA Tech Graphic Shorts are on sale for as low as $14—up to a 43% discount on the everyday $25 price. These shorts are ranked No. 1 among bestselling athletic shorts on Amazon, with over 3,800 five-star ratings to show for it. Under Armour has nearly 50 colorways to choose from, but prices range by color and size.

Under Armour designed these shorts for movement, ensuring the fit isn’t too close to the body and won’t restrict your range of motion. They’re made from soft polyester, which is famously quick-drying, moisture-wicking, and soft against the skin. There’s also an adjustable drawstring and two large hand pockets for carrying the essentials.

Of the thousands of shoppers who have worn and rated these shorts, many say they’re impressed with the minimal weight, the overall value, and the shorts’ versatility. Some shoppers also say they’re so comfortable that they have or intend to buy multiple pairs. “Had them for a few months now, and have had zero issues or complaints,” one shopper said. “Extremely comfortable! They fit well and stay in place during workouts or any other physical activities. Not much else to say except I am planning on buying more of them based on how much I like them.”

Having a comfortable pair of athletic shorts can mean the difference between a good workout and a chafing mess. And now that Under Armour’s UA Tech shorts are just $14, you can get a leg up on outdoor workouts as they come back into seasonal fashion. We’re not sure how long the discount will be around, though, so if you’ve been in the market for a comfortable pair that’s breathable, quick-drying, and stretchy, take a shot on these before they bounce back up to the full price.

The Best Nipple Clamps of 2024 for Maximum Pleasure

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Nipple play is probably underutilized by most, but it’s a technique that can intensify satisfaction and orgasms as a whole, especially with the use of the right sex toy. Nipple clamps are designed for this specific purpose. They provide constant but comfortable tension that stimulates the nipples, sending signals to the brain to produce oxytocin, which ultimately leads to us being more relaxed, fully aroused, and getting to have that big finish quicker.

To form a more complete picture of what nipple clamps are and how “nip stim,” as it’s been affectionately dubbed, can elevate any sexual encounter, Men’s Journal spoke with Shan Boodram, a certified sex educator and intimacy expert. Boodram filled us in on what it takes to get the most out of solo and spicy sessions with your partner(s) and how nipple play, nipple clamps, and toys in this space can enhance foreplay, sex, and intimacy.

With her help, and after scouring sexually adventurous Reddit subgroups, we’ve determined that the best nipple clamps you can buy right now are Cal Exotics Nipplettes Vibrating Nipple Clamps. These vibrating nipple clamps are packed with user-friendly features, including adjustability, a soft-touch rubber coating, and a non-intimidating design for all experience levels.

What Is a Nipple Clamp?

A nipple clamp is a device for sexual pleasure that pinches, squeezes, and tweaks the nipples. They’re usually tiny enough to discreetly stash in the nightstand and come in a variety of shapes and mechanisms.

Clamps can fall into three categories: clover, tweezer, and clothespin (the most popular). Within these categories, you’ll find different types of vibrating nipple clamps, easily adjustable types, and even some with chains. There are also such things as nipple suckers that create a vacuum seal around the nipple to create pressure. While clamps can cause a high level of pain (if that’s what you’re into), their primary function is pure erotic stimulation.

The Benefits of Using Nipple Clamps

The goal of nipple clamps is to heighten total-body sensations by stimulating the nipples. “Nipples, on most bodies regardless of gender, are densely packed with nerve endings, making them highly sensitive to touch, pressure, and temperature,” Boodram explains.

“These nerve endings send signals to the brain when stimulated, triggering sensations of pleasure or discomfort, which is why it’s important to ask your partner how they feel about nipple stimulation, especially considering women’s sensitivity can vary drastically depending on their hormonal levels.”

Boodram even broke down the science for us about why nipples, of all body parts, are a common erogenous zone. “Within the sensory cortex, [which is] the section of the cerebral cortex responsible for receiving and interpreting sensory information from different parts of the body, genitals and nipples are physically beside each other. Fun fact: Another neighbor of the genitals is the feet, which might explain why many have a foot fetish, but that’s another topic for another day,” she says.

As for men’s nipples, Boodram notes that, while they don’t serve a reproductive function, their sensitivity can still contribute to sexual arousal and pleasure.

How to Use Nipple Clamps

Like prostate massagers, anal beads, and sex swings, nipple clamps have the potential to strengthen sexual relationships. “Toys can definitely bring couples closer together if they’re introduced as an enhancement rather than a replacement,” Boodram says.

As a sexpert, she stresses the importance of communicating with your partner to ensure everyone is comfortable and shares a tip for making things even more enjoyable: lube. “Incorporating [nipple clamps] usually means extended play, and lube goes a long way in making that experience run smoothly.”

She recommends K-Y Yours+Mine Couples Lubricant on the nipples with suction toys because the pulsations and pull produce perfect stimulation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nipple Clamps

How do you use nipple clamps?

Using nipple clamps can be as easy as squeezing them and letting them squeeze you back, but it depends on the type. Most nipple clamps will have a spring hinge you’ll need to squeeze when applying. Other styles may utilize a vacuum suction or even magnets to produce nipple stimulation. Some are more unique, like , which come with four attachment tip sizes that produce different intensities of pressure.

Do you need to use lubricant with nipple clamps?

Boodram recommends using lubricant with nipple clamps to make them more comfortable and also to potentially heighten the experience with temperature stimulation. “If you want to try stimulating the nipples, try different variations of touch and temperature because nipples are highly sensitive,” she says.

Do nipple clamps hurt?

If pain is what you’re after, then nipple clamps can absolutely produce that. Otherwise, it’s all about elevating the stimulatory experience to a pleasurable level. Since nipples are crammed with nerve endings, they’re very sensitive to touch. The key is communicating what’s most comfortable for your nipples and making sure your partner respects that, especially if you’ve put them in charge.

This New Annual Pass Can Save You a Bundle on the Best Mountain Biking Trails

The concept that completely revolutionized the ski resort industry—the multi-mountain pass—is now getting the mountain bike treatment. For years, skiers and snowboarders have used Epic and Ikon Passes (sold by Vail Resorts and Alterra Mountain Company respectively) as their open ticket to numerous ski resorts across the U.S., Canada, and beyond. Now, a newly launched cycling pass—called Loam Pass—aims to provide similar multi-trail, money-saving benefits for destination mountain biking adventures.

An annual Loam Pass provides access to numerous resort trail systems as well as mountain bike shuttle operations.

It’s an idea that was hatched (on a chairlift) by bike industry professionals Rob Brown and Joey Foresta, who were inspired by the Ikon/Epic success stories, and felt they could be applied to their own wheelhouse—downhill mountain bike resorts.

“I just thought, why is biking being left out? Why can’t we have a multi-resort pass of our own?” recalls Brown, who pitched the idea to Foresta while riding a lift at Deer Valley resort in Utah in the summer of 2023. By the time they reached the top, they were both completely sold on the idea.

“We immediately started researching and putting a business plan together, taking our time to make sure we had a solid idea of how exactly it would work,” adds Brown. Focusing on improving the user experience for both resorts and consumers was at the heart of it.

Loam Pass’s 30 locations, with more on the way. One annual fee gets you two full days at each spot. “Use the pass six times and it pays for itself,” says Loam Pass co-founder Rob Brown.

Loam Pass went live on January 1, 2024, functioning much like its ski pass predecessors. One flat fee ($250) for the pass gets you two full days at each of the Loam Pass destinations. Currently, there are nearly 30 spots on the Loam Pass roster in over 20 U.S. states stretching from California to New Hampshire, with 10 more destinations slated for later this spring.

“You get 60 days of riding on the pass, and the average ticket price at our destinations is about $44, so if you use the pass six times it pays for itself,” says Brown, who estimates the potential annual savings of a Loam Pass at around $2,400.

The pass is targeting some of the best paid mountain biking trails and terrain across the country. Top recommended destinations include Ride Rock Creek and Kanuga in North Carolina, Big Rack Shuttles in Utah, Bryce and Massanutten in Virginia, and Cog Wild and Trans Cascadia Excursions in the Pacific Northwest. Beyond resort benefits, a Loam Pass includes access to pedal-friendly trail systems and mountain bike shuttle operations as well.

“We want the pass to be a tool for these places to receive more visitation and grow their businesses,” says Foresta. “They’re investing heavily in awesome trails, and we want to encourage these destinations to keep building them,” adds Brown.

Loam Pass is valid for a full calendar year. If you have ski pass prices in your head, an annual Loam Pass is a fraction of those at $250.

The Allbirds Water-Resistant Sneakers That Are ‘Great in Cold Rainy Weather’ Are 30% Off and Ready for Spring

Many clothing brands are taking sustainability more seriously, but Allbirds takes a ground-up approach to making great sneakers, prioritizing the use of natural and innovative materials like wool and sugarcane while offsetting emissions in the manufacturing process. The brand’s Wool Runner is its signature shoe, featuring a merino wool-blend upper that’s machine washable.

Though wool has many great features, it can lose effectiveness if it gets too wet, which is why Allbirds introduced the Wool Runner Mizzle—a sneaker that uses a bio-based DWR coating that helps repel water. Right now, the Mizzle sneaker is on sale at REI for $87, a 30% savings on the normally $125 shoe. It’s available in whole sizes between 8 and 13, but shoppers say sizing up is the way to go if you’re in between.

These minimalist shoes are well-known for comfort in addition to their eco-friendly sources. They’re made from itch-free merino wool that is ZQ-certified, meaning environmental and animal welfare standards have been met during production. It has a bouncy and lightweight EVA midsole that Allbirds makes from sugarcane rather than plastic. The ergonomic insoles are constructed from castor bean oil-based foam, while the shoelaces are made from recycled plastic bottles. They’re also very soft and can even be worn without socks thanks to the merino wool uppers that are naturally odor-resistant and temperature-regulating,

Even though they’re water-repellent, they likely won’t be the ideal pick for braving a tropical storm as much as they’ll offer peace of mind on overcast days. But if you do get caught in the rain, the fact that they can be easily tossed in the washing machine adds to the convenience and long-term value.

Shoppers were impressed with the comfort and durability of the shoes. “Unlike so many other brands, the quality and consistency of these are amazing,” one shopper said, adding that they’ve bought four pairs over the last decade. Another shopper wrote that the sneakers offer “all-day comfort,” with another noting that they “wear them with and without socks. They look good and hold their shape.”

Others were impressed with the DWR performance, with one calling the shoes “great in cold rainy weather,” and another saying they are “perfect for cold, drizzly Northwestern casual outings.” Another shopper wrote that the shoes were “Scotland tested,” adding that they “made it through the bogs, hikes, and cobblestone streets with comfort and ease.”

If you’re looking for a versatile, water-repellent shoe with an eco-friendly ethos, the Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzle sneaker is the one for you. But we’ve seen other sneakers from this brand sell out quickly, especially when they’re on sale, so act fast to score this substantial discount.

Professional badminton player Gronya Somerville is just 28 years old and has already made history.

She became the first Australian to win a Grand Prix title, succeeding at both the Canada Open and Dutch Open in the same year.

Somerville is also a business owner, balancing her online training program, BADFIT, for badminton players, her sporting career and post-graduate studies in Sports Management.

Gronya Somerville

At just 12 years old, she joined a Talent Identification Program launched by Alisa Camplin that aimed to find the next Aussie badminton player, and from there her professional sporting career blossomed.

“I hit with a guy who was doing all these trick shots, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever and told my mum after that day that this is what I wanted to do with my life. I’d done tennis and athletics seriously, but I didn’t have the same passion that I had for badminton,” she tells 9honey Coach.

A common frustration for badminton players is its lack of mainstream attention, though Somerville says the main issue is people’s perception of badminton.

“If they haven’t seen it at a high level, thinking it’s a slow and easy game, when it is one of the most dynamic sports with the fastest smash over 500km/h.”

Though the prize money for badminton is significantly less than that of tennis, Somerville feels lucky to do what she loves. “I continue to compete for the love of the sport rather than prize money.”

Thankfully, the sport’s popularity is on the rise, with stadiums being nearly fully booked outside of work hours. Somerville says the more people see the sport, the more their interest in it grows.

“It’s great to see the demand and the growing number of Aussies trying their hand at different sports on not only a competitive level but a recreational level.”

Upon finishing her Exercise Science degree, Somerville began to look for a way she could combine her experience as a sporting champion with a service that could help emerging badminton players and fund her tournaments for the Olympic year.

Gronya Somerville

“BADFIT is about creating a community of people who enjoy badminton, and I’m thrilled to bring people together who love the sport.”

“Being a part of a community can have huge benefits to mental and physical health and through my work with AIA Australia I have learnt the importance of the small things we can all do to deliver big benefits,” she says.

Somerville has had a hectic year of travelling for competitions and training at home in preparation for this the Olympic Games Paris 2024, playing 25 tournaments that last roughly five days and take place in a different country each time.

“AIA champions doing something small for yourself every day, and I see real merit in making sure when my schedule gets busy, that I take some time each day to help myself mentally.”

“That would be anything from catching up with a friend on the phone for 15 minutes to going for a walk or doing some meditation.”

Gronya Somerville

As she prepares for the Olympic Games, Somerville’s training has ramped up, her qualifying period continuing till the end of April.

To secure some extra ranking points over the next two months, she will have “a lot” of tournaments to compete in, and afterwards, she will have an extended training period in Melbourne to prepare for the games.

COMPETITION: Win a luxury resort trip to Hawaii worth over $10,000

“I’m really looking forward to everything to come this year, from representing Australia in Paris, growing BADFIT, working as an AIA Ambassador and hopefully continuing to see badminton on the rise.”
