Dietitian reveals the healthiest breads to buy from the supermarket ranked by calories

Author Susie Burrell is a leading Australian dietitian and nutritionist, founder of Shape Me, co-host of The Nutrition Couch podcast and prominent media spokesperson, with regular appearances in both print and television media commenting on all areas of diet, weight loss and nutrition.

So many different varieties of bread, so little time – there is high fibre, rye, wholegrain, seeds, wholegrain and seeds, high protein and like all foods there are nutritional pros and cons of each.

It is also difficult to compare different types of bread as the nutritional profiles are profoundly different, and whilst some like dense, wholegrain loaves may be technically ‘healthier’, they may not suit each individual’s nutritional needs.

In an attempt to compare different types of bread, here are the most common supermarket loaves ranked in order from highest to lowest calories, and keep in mind that in many cases, higher calorie loaves may be suggestive of a more nutritionally dense loaf.
