‘Essential’ thing star AFLW player Courtney Hodder relies on to stay fit

As a star AFLW player – and a former rugby league champion – Courtney Hodder knows exactly what it takes to work hard for what she wants.

A proud Indigenous woman, Hodder has been a player to watch this season, recently nominated for Mark of the Year.

9Honey Coach chatted to Hodder to pick her brains on all things health and wellness, as part of our 5 Fitness Questions.

1. We’re always being promised ‘the secret’ to getting and staying healthy. What’s yours?

My secret is that I make sleep my priority and it allows me to feel happy, healthier and more energised.

2. What’s something you know now about health you wish you could go back in time and tell yourself five or 10 years ago?

I’ve learnt that recovery is key to everything… whether it be recovery ice baths, food, sleep or stretching. It is important to give your body and mind time to heal.

3. What’s your nutrition philosophy?

Although I like to eat nourishing foods, I do trust in my body and eat what it feels like on the day. Trying to maintain a healthy diet can be hard at times but it definitely won’t hurt to have a cheeky treat now and then.

4. What’s one area of your own health, fitness or wellbeing you’re working to improve?

Allowing more downtime to spend with family or alone with the business of my life; it’s important to give back to myself and it’s something I’ve been working on.

5. What’s a small, practical step you’d tell a friend to make if they asked your advice on something they can do to improve their health, starting today?

Drinking lots and lots of water… Staying hydrated in the Queensland heat is something not a lot of people maintain.

Although water will quench your thirst, it’s also essential to keeping your body functioning properly and feeling healthy.
