Health and fitness has always been central to the Apple Watch: step and movement trackers, sleep detectors and hearing health monitors are just the beginning. The Series 6 model has built in sensors that can also monitor your blood oxygen levels, plus there’s also an ECG app to monitor your heart’s rhythm. And now, for the first time, Apple has launched a subscription-based fitness service – fuelled by the Apple Watch.

What is Fitness+?

A next generation workout platform that combines studio-based guided workouts with the personalised interactive experience of the Apple Watch. The pre-recorded fitness videos can be watched via an iPhone, an iPad or on Apple TV – and while you’re working out your metrics, such as heart rate and calories burned, are monitored by the watch and displayed live on the screen of your device.

What Apple devices do you need to use Fitness+?

To use Fitness+ you need an Apple Watch (Series 3 or newer) and one additional Apple device to watch workout videos on – this can be an Ipad, an iPhone or Apple TV.

What workouts can you do?

There are 10 different categories: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), strength training, yoga, dance, core, cycling, treadmill (for running and walking) and rowing. There’s also a mindful cool-down section, where an instructor guides you through gentle stretches and meditation – these are designed to be played at the end of your workout. There are currently over 200 different workouts on Fitness+ and new ones are uploaded every Monday.

Are the workouts designed for the home?

In the midst of a pandemic, flexibility is the key to a sustainable fitness regime; Fitness+ provides this. As long as you have access to an Apple device and are wearing an Apple watch you can enjoy the workouts at home, at the gym or even in a hotel room or the park.

Do you need to have access to gym equipment?

There’s a plethora of of classes available that don’t require any equipment – such as core, dance and HIIT – however, to fully reap the rewards of the program it’s useful to have access to a bike, a treadmill, a rowing machine or, at the very least, a set of dumbbells.

Is Fitness+ suitable for beginners?

Very much so. There’s a designated section that has been specifically designed for absolute beginners. These workouts are all low impact and are either 10 or 20 minutes long – and while some beginner workouts use light dumbbells, it’s also possible to do the whole beginner’s program without any equipment.

The main studio-based workouts are suitable for both novices and advanced fitness enthusiasts. Each class has a minimum of three instructors on the screen: there’s an instructor hosting the class, an instructor participating in the class, and a trainer who demonstrates an easier version of the same routine. So if at any point the workout gets too demanding, there’s always an easier move to try.

What sets Fitness+ apart from other workout platforms?

The Apple Watch is the primary differentiator. Not only does it add an additional layer of interaction to one’s workouts by showing metics – such as heart rate and calories burnt – on the screen of the device you’re using, but it also connects the workouts you do on Fitness+ with the rest of your day-to-day exercise.

The instructors are also a stand-out feature. There’s a strong sense of inclusivity among the dynamic roster of trainers; for example the instructors ages range from 20 to 60 and all the trainers use sign language where possible, to aid users with hearing difficulties.

The music on Fitness+ is central to the overall experience and motivating playlists have been carefully curated to suit each workout. Users can select a workout based on music genre – there are nine different styles to choose from: Latest Hits, Chill Vibes, Upbeat Anthems, Pure Dance, Throwback Hits, Everything Rock, Latin Grooves, Hip Hop/R&B, and Top Country.
