Right now, 85 per cent Aussies are losing sleep for the same reason

With the BOM predicting El Nino will bring intense heatwaves and humidity until mid-year (and sticky nights abundant as we speak), Aussies everywhere are particularly vulnerable to an often ignored, but serious, health risk.

And alarming insomnia trend on the rise as heat waves intensify, according to new research commissioned by Koala.

Shockingly, the data revealed a huge 85 per cent of Aussies note they lose or can’t sleep in warm periods, with over half (60 per cent) concerned about their sleep health amidst a predicted heatwave.

“The extreme warmth predicted by El Nino is of concern to sleep specialists and any Australian interested in their sleep health and sleep quality,” specialist sleep physician Dr David Cunnington says.

He says one of the “most important” factors that can affect sleep is the temperature.

“We know from research that your core body temperature needs to drop by about 1 degree Celsius to initiate good sleep and maintain a healthy deep sleep,” Dr Cunnington says.

“Exposure to extreme heat during the night increases wakefulness and can decrease slow-wave and rapid eye movement sleep.

“Coupled with the projected humidity and accompanying night-sweats, Australians need to audit their current sleeping arrangements.”

Overall the study found 77 per cent of Australians have suffered from lack of sleep due to overheating, with 91 per cent sleeping without a blanket to cool down, while 21 per cent sleep in the nude to cope.

Over half (54per cent) of Australians don’t think their bedroom is adequately prepared to handle an intense heatwave.

Equally worrying, over half (57 per cent) of Australians have suffered prolonged bouts of insomnia, with 57 per cent reporting irritability and 75 per cent reporting physical fatigue as a result.
