Squash Australia president Joanne Brodie is “extremely disappointed” with her sport’s exclusion from the 2024 Olympics.

Squash officials had been optimistic about the sport being included in the Paris Games program, but it has again been snubbed, with breakdancing preferred instead.
“In 2018 Squash Australia was part of a bid led by the World Squash Federation and the Professional Squash Association to include squash at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris,” Brodie said in a statement.

“I was extremely disappointed to hear that squash missed out on inclusion at the 2024 Olympic Games.

“Instead, surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing and breakdancing will be included at the Paris Games.”

Softball, which will return to the Olympics next year in Tokyo, has also missed out on a Paris berth.

However, Softball Australia CEO David Pryles said the sport’s omission was expected.

“It’s obviously a kick in the teeth, when you’re in an Olympics and you’re back out, (but) you’re just got to play the cards you are dealt,” Pryles said.

“It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, we just have to roll with the punches.”

Pryles was confident softball would return at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“I’m pleased with the level of support the AIS have given us, even though we are out of the cycle,” he said.

“It can help us build towards 2028. We’ve got some pathway funding now that we can use.”
