Turns out gin and tonics are actually full of sugar – you’re better off drinking Sprite

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 10:10 pm

If you’ve ever foregone a fun cocktail in favour of a gin and tonic because it felt like a lower-calorie option, think again.

A popular TikTok user has revealed tonic water is actually full of sugar, and is nowhere near as ‘healthy’ as people think.

In fact, one glass of tonic water has more sugar than the same amount of Sprite.

Watch the video above.

A man holds up a bottle of tonic water in the supermarket

In a video posted to TikTok that’s now racked up more than half a million views, the user named Freezma showed off the label on a bottle of tonic water, with the caption “Tag that friend who drinks Gin & Tonics when they’re dieting.”

“I don’t know who needs to see this, but this might blow your freakin’ mind,” he starts the video’s narration.

Filmed in the supermarket, the camera freezes on the nutritional label of the bottle, showing that each serving has 83 calories and a massive 20.5 grams of sugar.

He then grabs a bottle of Sprite, and displays the nutrition panel. One serving of Sprite has 72 calories and 17 grams of sugar – still a lot but definitely less than the tonic water.

A lot of people in the comments section were shocked by the sugar content in tonic water, while others said that it was a gross-tasting drink anyway.

One user explained the difference between mixers: “Sparkling water = carbonated water. Soda water = carbonated water + bicarbonate of soda. Tonic water = carbonated water + sugar + quinine,” they wrote.

“Good luck drinking tonic water without sugar. No one could bear it,” another person added, as the taste of the sugar is needed to balance out the quinine.

A few commenters pointed out that soft drinks like Sprite actually contain less sugar per serving than they used to, as they’re now manufactured with artificial sweeteners in addition to sugar.

“I drink gin and diet lemonade,” one person suggested, as a low-calorie tonic water alternative.

Though one upside to drinking tonic water is the way it glows in low light – the perfect drink to have in a club.

“Put tonic water under UV lights and watch it glow! My fave drink to make when I was bartending was gin and tonic – for the glow!,” one comment read.

Why eating chicken, lamb and tuna actually makes you a happier person, according to science

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 11:10 pm

When someone says that food can make you happy, your mind probably instantly goes to comfort foods – chocolate, hot chips, your favourite home-cooked meal.

But there’s actual scientific evidence that certain foods can actually boost your body’s levels of serotonin, the happy hormone.

Serotonin is familiar to many people as the chemical in our bodies known for regulating sleep, learning, memory, hunger, sexual behaviour and – most famously – mood.

Eating the right foods can actually have a huge impact on your overall mood.

Of all the serotonin that’s made by our bodies, 90 per cent of it is produced by the gut. This means that the overwhelming majority of serotonin is synthesised by extracting amino acids from the foods we eat.

According to Clinical Nutritionist at The Banyans Healthcare, Tammy Spiller, eating foods that contain the amino acid known as tryptophan can help the body to produce more serotonin.

“When we deprive the body of the precursor to serotonin – tryptophan – it contributes to a lowered mood state,” she tells 9Honey.

To boost serotonin in our bodies, Spiller says that we need to eat foods which are high in tryptophan. This includes: chicken, lamb, salmon, tuna, bananas, oats, and peanut butter. See below for the full list.

When we eat food, the body breaks it down into amino acids – one of which is tryptophan – which then enter our bloodstream and cross the blood brain barrier, then are synthesised by the brain into neurotransmitters like serotonin.

Spiller says that the way we eat our food is also a key part of regulating our serotonin levels. “Eating carbohydrates with our protein – rather than another type of protein – can help to increase the uptake of tryptophan.”

“For anyone susceptible to mood or behaviour changes, it may make a small difference to serotonin production and could be something to try,” she said. “It’s also good for a reasonable night’s sleep to have a little bit of complex carbs.”

“Tryptophan also important for our sleep, in that it is a precursor to melatonin,” Spiller said.

The link between mood and food just goes to show how important a holistic approach is to both physical and mental care.

“Many mental health care plans, such as the ones we utilise at The Banyans, endorse changing behaviours to maintain a healthy diet as part of a strategy to improve overall mental health and mood,” said Spiller.

Having a balanced diet is also essential. Beyond these tryptophan-rich foods, “we need a diverse amount of fibre in our diet to ensure we maintain or build the volume and diversity of our gut microbiome,” says Spiller.

“It is our gut microbiome and by extension the health of our digestive tract that allows us to sufficiently break down and absorb our food.”

The Melbourne woman who won the first marathon she’d ever run

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 5:10 am

Running a marathon is a huge achievement. Winning a marathon is incredibly impressive.

And winning the first ever marathon you’ve run? That’s gotta be one for the history books.

Well, that’s exactly what one Melbourne woman has done, a year after giving birth.

After taking home gold in the race, Gemma Maini said: “It’s crazy to think this time last year I probably couldn’t even run 1km at the pace I ran the marathon at!”

READ MORE: The period underwear worth your time (of the month)

Gemma Maini crosses the finish line at the Melbourne marathon

The athlete and ASICS ambassador has previously represented Australia at the World Cross Country Championships, in both the 5000m and 10,000m distances.

Two years ago, Maini watched the Melbourne marathon while pregnant from the side lines, and last year watched it with her newborn son, Ollie. She then made a promise to run the event this year.

Before taking her place at the starting line, Maini hadn’t ever run the full 42 kilometres of a marathon in one go.

“It was definitely daunting lining up to race a distance I’d never even run before,” she told 9Honey, revealing that the longest run she’d done previously was 37 kilometres.

She says that she did a lot of training to get her body ready – but the most important thing is starting out slow.

Gemma Maini uses her son as inspiration while running.

“Three weeks after giving birth I began some light pilates to re-engage my core and strengthen my pelvic floor muscles to prepare my body for exercise,” she said. “Over the next 3 weeks I gradually increased the amount of walking I was completing and starting some light elliptical sessions.”

Only after she had built up a strong base fitness level, and gotten a sign-off from a women’s health physio could she start actually running.

She then began running longer distances, at slower speeds. “For two to three months prior to the marathon I was running about 145km a week,” she said, adding that she competed in other fun runs to help her understand what pace she needed to set.

“One key event for me to gauge my pace over the marathon distance was racing at the Gold Coast Half Marathon. Events like this break up the monotony of training and allow you to put to practice the training you’ve been doing.”

As an ASICS athlete, Maini says that she places a lot of importance on her mental wellbeing as well as how her body performs.

“The brand ethos is about maintaining a sound mind and sound body, which is really important to me and crucial to my training as a runner,” she said.

“I had a number of mental strategies in place to overcome the rough patches that can be inevitable in racing – picturing my 16 month old son Ollie at the top of the hill near the Shrine being one, and ensuring I stayed in the present moment, not thinking about the outcome but on the kilometre I was running.”

Though your goal might not be running a marathon, Maini says everyone has the ability to become a runner.

“Start slowly and gradually increase the time spent running each week, it will get easier,” she said. Finding a group to run with or using your run to explore new streets and trails can makes the initial stages easier to get through, mentally.

Another absolutely critical thing for any runner is finding the right shoes – if you can, get them fitted by a professional. “I used a gait analysis at an ASICS store to help me find the correct shoes for me,” she said, adding that her current go-to shoes are the GEL-NIMBUS 25’s for easy recovery runs, the SUPERBLASTS for long runs and the METAPSEED SKY+ for fast interval sessions and for racing.

Maini says that switching out your shoes on different runs help you to engage different stabilising muscles and build better overall strength.

Why you’re awake at 3.29am – and you’re not alone

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 9:10 pm

If you’re waking up nearly every night and rolling over to see that it’s 3am, you’re not alone.

New research has come out showing that the majority of women who can’t sleep due to menopause symptoms are waking up at 3.29am.

Insomnia is an extremely common symptom of menopause, with three-quarters of menopausal and perimenopausal women reporting they suffer from it, according to a new study.

READ MORE: Inside the $50k a year gym beloved by celebrities

Depressed senior woman lying in bed cannot sleep from insomnia

And a whopping 69 per cent of women surveyed in the study reported that this menopausal insomnia has a negative effect on their mental wellbeing.

The study was released to coincide with World Menopause Day on 18 October, to shed a light on the common – and debilitating – side-effect that many women experience.

More than half of those surveyed reported feeling ill-equipped to deal with their menopause symptoms – the majority didn’t even realise that insomnia could be something they’d have to face.

Furthermore, 60 per cent of those suffering from insomnia had no idea of the right techniques that can be employed to help them go back to sleep, with most of them doing activities which would wake them up even more.

The research by Dunelm showed a third scrolled through social media, 20 per cent flicked on the TV, while the others just watched the clock as the hours slipped closer to dawn.

Tossing and turning in bed trying to fall asleep. Exhausted and sleep deprived woman suffering from insomnia

While the insomnia that comes with menopause may be difficult to avoid, there are certain techniques that we can apply during those early hours of the morning when sleep feels impossible.

Though it’s tempting to reach for your phone or a book, don’t do it. The more time we spend in bed doing things other than sleep, the more our brain and body start to learn that bed is a place for these non-sleep activities.

One of the best methods to help you fall back asleep is called ‘cognitive refocusing’, or as TikTok calls it, the ‘fake scenario trick’.

For a daily dose of 9Honey, subscribe to our newsletter here

Cognitive refocusing, developed by US psychology researcher Les Gellis, involves distracting yourself with pleasant thoughts while trying to fall back to sleep – but the trick is to think of a scenario that’s not too interesting.

According to scientists writing for The Conversation, here’s how to do it.

“Pick an engaging cognitive task with enough scope and breadth to maintain your interest and attention – without causing emotional or physical arousal. So, nothing too scary, thrilling or stressful.

For example, if you like interior decorating, you might imagine redesigning a room in your house.

If you’re a football fan, you might mentally replay a passage of play or imagine a game plan.

A music fan might mentally recite lyrics from their favourite album. A knitter might imagine knitting a blanket.

Whatever you choose, make sure it’s suited to you and your interests. The task needs to feel pleasant, without being overstimulating.”

One study of people with insomnia found those who tried cognitive refocusing had significant improvements in insomnia symptoms compared to a control group.

Woman slammed for filming TikTok during an allergic reaction instead of using her EpiPen

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 1:10 am

If you can feel yourself having an allergic reaction, surely your first thought would be to get medical assistance, right?

Well, one woman in South Africa is being slammed for her decision to film a TikTok instead of seeking treatment for her life-threatening allergic reaction.

In a TikTok that’s now received over 22 million views, influencer Shivaika Sewlal shows off her severely bruised and swollen face, with the text: “Me not realising that I’m having a life-threatening allergic reaction…”.

Watch the video above.

In the video, she says that she feels completely fine, while acknowledging that she doesn’t look it, but adding that she can see perfectly.

Sewlal says in the clip that she wasn’t initially even planning on going to the hospital, before ultimately changing her mind when the swelling got “annoying”.

In fact, it was so bad that Face ID couldn’t recognise her.

Once at the hospital, Sewlal told her doctor she hadn’t eaten anything she was allergic to, and didn’t take her EpiPen because she wasn’t certain she needed to.

Sewlal continued to share videos of her experience at the hospital to TikTok, as she was hooked up to an IV drip and given shots of adrenaline in her thigh and arm.

“A doctor walked in on me doing a TikTok. Feeling so embarrassed,” she whispered at one point.

After a few hours of treatment, the gravity of the situation dawned on Sewlal.

“What’s scary is that I was literally going to take an allergy tablet and then sleep,” she shared in another TikTok. “I thought I was being overdramatic, but, like, everyone is quite stressed here.”

Fans in the comment section of her videos shared their concert, pointing out that she should have gone straight to the hospital instead of filming a video.

“As a nurse, I’m not going to lie, I’m panicking that you didn’t use your epi pen. I’m glad all turned out well, but in the future, that’s an immediate,” one person wrote.

“I know that doctor was flabbergasted,” added another.

“Girl I want your level of calmness,” a third wrote.

In a follow-up TikTok, posted the same day, Sewlal shared what caused the incident.

“Well, I just learned that if I touch something that touched peanuts it could kill me,” she explained.

“I was so confused because I didn’t touch an actual peanut — I touched something that still had peanut bits on it, and I rubbed my eyes after touching it. That’s when I started swelling up.”

Sewlal summed up for her viewers: “When in doubt just go to the hospital.”

Breaking up your work day with five-minute movement intervals can have huge health benefits

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 11:10 pm

In Australia, workers spend on average 76 per cent of their time sitting down, immobile. It doesn’t take a genius to know this isn’t exactly ideal.

But it turns out that it doesn’t take that much extra effort to make a difference to your health.

Just five minutes of slow walking, every 30 minutes, can have massive positive effects.

Watch the video above.

Three cheerful businesswomen walking together in an office. Diverse group of businesswomen smiling while having a discussion. Successful female colleagues collaborating on a new project.

Scientists who undertook studies on sedentary workers found that moving, every half hour for five minutes, can lower blood sugar spikes and blood pressure, improved mood, and more energy.

And we’re not asking you to do burpees – walking at around 3 km/h is enough.

Some offices have introduced walking meetings, where conversations are held while strolling around the building or going out to get a takeaway coffee.

In an interview with NPR, Keith Diaz, associate professor of behavioural medicine at Columbia University’s Medical Center, said that the studies were conclusive: taking regular breaks makes us better workers.

For a daily dose of 9Honey, subscribe to our newsletter here

“Those folks who moved every half hour – they had lower fatigue levels. They felt more energized and in general, had a better mood,” he said

“We spend our time trying to convince the workforce and employers that [they] should allow employees to take breaks to move. And it seems counterintuitive to them, like, no, I need them working, I need them productive.”

“But actually, an employee who’s in a better mood, who’s feeling less fatigued and feeling more energised is a more productive employee.”

Man working from home at standing desk is walking on under desk treadmill

Even just a slow walk around the office or your home, walking on the spot, or shuffling side-to-side is enough movement to see an effect.

Diaz is currently elaborating on this study, enlisting everyday workers to start moving more and recording their findings.

“The goal of of my lab is to try to figure out, what’s the least amount of movement that you can do to offset the harms of sitting?,” he told NPR. “And so that’s really what we’re trying to do – is try to figure out how little we can get away with to offset the harms.”

READ MORE: The Aussie men set on changing our attitudes to alcohol

However, when NPR published a video of their own experiment on TikTok, many people said that it still seems unachievable.

”Every. Half. Hour?!? No one can do this,” the top comment, with over 1500 likes, reads.

“My meeting schedule could never allow that,” another added.

”That’s 1h20m of walking over 8 hours! It’s a significant chunk of time,” a third person pointed out.

However, some saw the benefits. “Finland’s schools incorporate 15 mins of movement for every 30 mins of work. They have the best school performance in the world. Why don’t we all do this?,” one comment read.

Australians drinking less alcohol than ever before, studies show

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 11:10 pm

It feels like sometimes Australia’s national identity is pretty strongly tied to drinking alcohol. But it looks like that’s slowly changing.

A recent survey found young Aussies have been making pointed efforts to reduce their amount of drinking.

Instead, they’re turning to alternatives. The low- and no-alcohol market has exploded in the last few years, driven by young Aussies who are looking to drink a little less.

READ MORE: A morning coffee may help you lose weight, study says

Tattooed caucasian barman pouring beer while standing in pub.

A study from July 2023 found that within the 18-29 demographic, 38 per cent of Australians are purposefully reducing their alcohol intake.

One of the biggest drivers behind this is health reasons – alcohol is often packed with sugar and calories, which can leave you bloated.

And let’s not forget about the hangover that comes along when drinking pre-mixed drinks laden with sugar.

Mick Spencer and Liam Battye are two mates who wanted to hang on to the fun drinking sessions, but without the hangovers that are all too common.

And so, their low-alcohol seltzer was born. Instead of cutting out booze entirely – which often doesn’t stick for too long – the idea behind Gravity Seltzer is to just rethink your drinking habits.

READ MORE: The health benefits of every Aussie’s favourite breakfast

The drink is brewed like a beer, with all natural ingredients and almost zero sugar – so people who want booze can have one or two, without nasty side-effects.

“We saw a trend in Aussies, particularly those in a younger demographic, turning away from the ‘Big Three’, being beer, wine and spirits,” Spencer told 9Honey.

On the flip side, a study by Roy Morgan found sales of RTDs, or pre-mix alcoholic drinks, led by the increasing popularity of hard seltzers like White Claw, were up by 16.7 per cent.

“That is why we decided to create a lighter option as we could see there is a market for it,” Spencer said.

Guidelines suggest adults have no more than four drinks in one sitting – a recommendation exceeded by one in four Aussies on a regular basis.

“While sobriety may be the answer for optimal health, depriving ourselves of the things we enjoy can also lead to negative mental health and a higher likelihood we will binge in the future,” researchers wrote in The Conversation.

The premise of Gravity Seltzer is to encourage people to rethink their drinking habits, the founders say.

“You can go on a hike, have a drink or two and then still get up early to explore the next day,” Spencer told 9Honey.

Gravity seltzer

Social media is also a driving factor behind Aussies drinking less – as more and more people share their journeys in reducing their alcohol intake, others may feel inspired to do the same.

“Once something becomes normal and normalised, it’s much easier to become part of that group,” Amy Pennay, Deputy Director of the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research at La Trobe University, told SBS News.

Spencer and Battye also noticed a lot of people have become more aware of their sugar intake, so specially crafted their seltzer using all-natural ingredients and with less than one per cent sugar.

The product has already caught the eye of athletes who love the drink, and they have signed a two-year contract to be the official seltzer supplier at some of Australia’s leading sports stadiums.

One extra cup of coffee a day could help you lose weight, study says

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 3:10 am

While coffee has been shown to have a number of health benefits, it’s safe to say the majority of us drink it for that sweet, sweet caffeine.

And while there has always been chatter that drinking coffee can help you lose weight, the truth has finally been confirmed in a study.

Researchers have found having coffee every day can lead to a smaller amount of weight gain over time.

READ MORE: Drinking coffee before sex can give you better orgasms

A close up of hand pouring fresh filter coffee into a mug in a clean kitchen

While all of us put on a small amount of weight naturally as we age, the act of drinking coffee led to study participants gaining less weight than the average, according to a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

The study looked at data collected during three different time periods, comparing the weight loss results of people who drank coffee, both sweetened and unsweetened.

People who drank an extra cup of coffee a day gained 0.12 kg less weight than expected over four years. Adding sugar resulted in a fraction more (0.09 kg) weight gain than expected over four years.

Milk and non-dairy alternatives didn’t have any difference to weight gain numbers.

So while long black drinkers might be celebrating, those of us who add sugar to our morning java might have something to worry about.

“The findings raise questions of a potentially even more detrimental impact on weight by commercial coffee drinks with higher amounts of added sugar,” the study authors write.

READ MORE: Surprising food that can relieve symptoms of menopause

Picture of female hands with coffee and sugar

While the weight loss differences noted might not make a huge difference, the proof is there. But how does it work?

“Caffeine is a natural stimulant which has been shown to temporarily reduce appetite and increase alertness. This may help to feel less hungry for a short period, potentially leading to reduced energy intake,” Lauren Ball writes for The Conversation.

Caffeine has also been shown to speed up our metabolism, causing more energy to be burned while resting. It also has a diuretic effect – making us use the bathroom more frequently and therefore lead to the loss of temporary water weight.

So is it worth trying to drink more coffee as a weight-loss technique?

”Losing weight can be influenced by various factors, so don’t get too enthusiastic about the coffee-weight link highlighted in this new study, or increase your coffee intake to unreasonable levels,” writes Ball.

“You’d have to drink three cups a day to lose just one pound [half a kilo] over four years!” Beata Rydyger, a registered nutritionist not directly involved in the study, told Medical News Today.

As with any other diet-related topic, it all just comes down to moderation. If you really love sugar in your coffee, don’t feel like you have to give it up. Similarly, don’t drink ten cups of coffee a day in the hopes that it’ll help you slim down.

In Australia, three-quarters of adults drink coffee daily, with 27 per cent claiming it’s a necessity to get through the day.

Most adults can safely consume around 400mg of caffeine a day – the equivalent of two espressos, four cups of instant coffee, or eight cups of tea.

It’s been a big month for coffee drinkers – last week we shared a story about a viral TikTok linking coffee consumption to better orgasms.

A doctor weighed in, confirming that the science does suggest that having coffee – or another caffeine source – before sex could lead to stronger orgasms.
