Dwayne Johnson Says There’s ‘No Chance’ He’ll Return to ‘Fast and Furious’

Dwayne Johnson has a reputation for being a very likable guy—he really goes out of his way to connect with fans on social media—but there’s one person he definitely does not get along with: Vin Diesel. The pair had a falling out during the filming of 2016’s The Fate of the Furious, in which Johnson played the role of Hobbs. That feud has been simmering ever since, but it returned to the spotlight this fall when Diesel posted on Instagram asking “little brother Dwayne” to return to the franchise. In a recent interview with CNN, Johnson made public his response to that request: Absolutely not.

“I was very surprised by Vin’s recent post,” Johnson told CNN. “This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly—and privately—that I would not be returning to the franchise.”

That makes Diesel’s post, which came months after he and Johnson apparently spoke in person, even more bizarre. For Johnson, however, these kind of tactics are exactly why he and his Fast and Furious co-star didn’t get along in the first place.

“Vin’s recent public post was an example of his manipulation,” Johnson said. “We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding.”

Diesel, for his part, speculated to Men’s Health in June that Johnson didn’t appreciate his “tough love” approach on the set of The Fate of the Furious. Johnson disagreed with that view.

“I laughed and I laughed hard,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think everyone had a laugh at that.”

Despite the conflict on the 2016 film, it wasn’t Johnson’s last appearance in the franchise: He went on to star in 2019’s The Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. In the CNN interview, he made it clear that he has no hard feelings toward the rest of the cast or the series in general—a sentiment he made clear to Diesel when they spoke earlier this year.

“I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful,” Johnson said, “but that there was no chance I would return.”

Diesel will return for the final two installments of the Fast and Furious franchise, Fast 10 and Fast 11. The first of the two films is slated for a May 2023 release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Although he’s leaving Fast and Furious in the rear view mirror, Johnson has been staying busy with other projects. His latest film, Red Notice, has smashed Netflix streaming records and become the platform’s most-watched movie of all time. (Check out our interview with the film’s director, Rawson Marshall Thurber, here.) His upcoming superhero flick, Black Adam, is scheduled for a summer 2022 release.

‘Uncharted’ Trailer: Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg Team Up for Deadly Treasure Hunt

Sony released another trailer for its upcoming action flick Uncharted, and if you’re a fan of Indiana Jones-style adventure films, you won’t want to miss this one. The film, which stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, follows the duo as they travel the globe to unearth a fantastic treasure lost by explorer Ferdinand Magellan centuries ago.

Uncharted is based on the popular video game of the same name, according to Deadline, and stars Holland as the young thief Nick Drake. In the film, Drake gets recruited by the experienced treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan, played by Wahlberg, for a very difficult job: Tracking down and securing Magellan’s lost fortune.

Apart from the challenge of solving one of the oldest mysteries in the world, the duo has to find the treasure before it’s taken by Moncada (played by Antonio Banderas), the head of a powerful family who believes he’s the treasure’s rightful owner.

As the trailer shows, the film will be a high-adrenaline ride that follows Drake and Sullivan across the globe in search of untold riches (and perhaps answers to another mystery: What happened to Drake’s missing brother), all while trying to stay one step ahead of Moncada. Eye-watering cargo plane stunts, jungle showdowns, centuries-old ships flying through the air while slung beneath helicopters—there will be plenty of edge-of-your seat action in this flick.

Ruben Fleischer, who also helmed 2018’s Venom and 2009’s Zombieland, directed the film. Unfortunately, it’s been plagued with delays thanks to COVID and Holland’s shooting schedule with the latest Spiderman film. But after a long wait, it’s almost here: Uncharted will premiere in theaters on Feb. 18, 2022.

Dwayne Johnson Will Return to the Big Screen This Summer in ‘Jungle Cruise’

After a long delay, Jungle Cruise, the Disney film starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, will finally hit the big screen this summer. In an Instagram video taken in his “Iron Paradise” (his gym, of course), Johnson announced the film will premiere in theaters and stream on Disney+ Premier on July 30, 2021. For Johnson, the news is a sign that life is regaining some normalcy.

“Now that we are coming out of COVID slowly,” he said in the video, “we gotta own this rebound, we got to get back out there, and live the life that we wanna live.”

According to Johnson, the combination of an in-home and theatrical release gives audiences the option to see the film in the safest way possible. He and his family all had COVID-19, so he’s especially sensitive to the dangers of the virus, he said. If you decide to go with the streaming option, the film will be available to Disney+ subscribers for a one-time purchase price of $30, Deadline reports.

The film, which is inspired by a Disney theme park ride, follows boat captain Frank Wolff (Johnson) and Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt), a medical researcher, as they make a perilous journey into the Amazon in search of a mysterious tree with “unparalleled healing abilities,” as the official film synopsis describes it.

Although the new release date comes over a full year later than originally scheduled, Johnson noted the new date has some special significance to him. Years ago on July 30, he saw a preview for Pirates of the Caribbean and was inspired to star in a similar Disney film himself.

“One day, if I’m lucky enough, if I work my butt off enough,” he said, “maybe Disney will offer me a movie based on one of their iconic rides.”

Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.

You can watch Johnson’s full video (including a short teaser trailer) above. Jungle Cruise premieres in theaters and streams on Disney+ on July 30.

Kevin Hart Portrays Life as a Single Dad in New ‘Fatherhood’ Trailer

Just in time for Father’s Day, Netflix will release Fatherhood, a new film—based on a true story—starring Kevin Hart as a widowed dad raising his daughter. The first trailer just dropped and, fair warning, it’s a bit of a tearjerker.

The film is based on the book Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss & Love, according to Today. In the book, author Matthew Logelin shares the crushing experience of losing his wife shortly after she gave birth to their daughter, Maddy, as well as the ups and downs of raising her and honoring the memory of his wife. The film brings that story to life with Hart playing the role of Matt.

In the trailer, we see Hart’s character grappling with grief after the loss of his wife—and facing the anxiety-inducing prospect of raising his infant daughter on his own.

“If you could have had only one parent, I wish you could’ve had your mom,” he says to Maddy at one point. “She would’ve been better at it.”

But he doesn’t give up; instead he faces the challenges of solo parenting head on. From diaper changes to stroller mishaps to trying to get Maddy to fall sleep, he does his best to learn on the fly and be the best dad he can. He also enlists help from his friends, who provide some key sartorial support (maybe a baby sling can look good) and reinforcements at nap time (unfortunately, a cappella singing doesn’t convince Maddy to stop crying).

Check it out in the trailer above.

In addition to Hart, Alfre Woodard, Lil Rel Howery, Paul Reiser, Anthony Carrigan, and DeWanda Wise also star in the film. Fatherhood will premiere on Netflix on June 18, 2021.

New ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Trailer Teases a Bigger, Scarier Sequel

After a long delay due to COVID-19, A Quiet Place Part II—the sequel to the 2018 original starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt—is finally about to make its debut in theaters. Judging from the latest trailer and Q&A video released today, it’s going to be a high-intensity nail-biter. That crazy bus stunt we glimpsed last year was just the beginning.

The new film takes place a few years after the events of the original and includes some familiar faces: Emily Blunt returns as Evelyn Abbott, and Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles as her two children. While the first film focused solely on the Abbott family, the sequel takes a much broader view, and the trailer hints at a dangerous journey the family must take and new characters they meet along the way, including one played by Cillian Murphy.

John Krasinski, whose character (Evelyn Abbott’s husband Lee) dies at the end of the first film, still has a role to play in Part II—he’s directing.

In an accompanying featurette video (see above), Krasinski and Blunt offer a few more clues about what’s in store with the sequel. First of all, it’s clear that it’s full of edge-of-your seat suspense, and that was a big reason for the delay in releasing it. As Krasinski puts it, the film deserved nothing less than the big screen.

“It was always designed for a theatrical experience,” he says.

While A Quiet Place had a tiny cast and focused on just one place, Part II goes way beyond the Abbott family farm.

“It’s such an inspired sequel,” says Blunt. “The world expands in this one.”

And if you loved the first film’s jumps, scares, and excruciating suspense, you’re in for a treat with the newest installment. According to Krasinski, Part II doubles down on the tension—which should make it even more fun to see in a theater full of people.

“It’s a much scarier movie,” he says.

A Quiet Place Part II hits theaters on May 28.

Brothers Clash in the Latest ‘F9’ Trailer

After a disastrous year for theaters, this summer could see things return to something like normal: Several major blockbuster releases are planned, including F9, the ninth installment of the long-running Fast & Furious series. Although we still have a few months to go before it hits the big screen, excitement for the long-awaited film is ramping up, and the latest trailer provides more clues about what’s in store: plenty of insane car chases and a big showdown between Dom Toretto and his estranged brother, Jakob.

As we saw in the last trailer, the gang’s back together—Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang all return in F9. John Cena plays Dom’s brother, Jakob, an assassin who teams up with villain Cipher (Charlize Theron) and hatches a “world-shattering plot” that Dom and his team must stop, according to the F9 website.

The trailer gives a preview of some insane action sequences, including several flying cars, lots of hand-to-hand combat, and a super-powered magnet that can pull a car through a building. It also hints at what’s driving all that action. Jakob threatens the one thing Dom cares about most: his family.

“Brother against brother,” Cipher says in the trailer. “This should be interesting.”

It’s about time this movie sees the light of day: Originally slated for release in April 2019, the premiere was bumped several times due to conflicting release dates and the Covid-19 pandemic. But as director Justin Lin pointed out in a Q&A with Deadline, everyone involved wanted F9 (and the next two sequels in the series) to be seen in theaters.

“I think it will be worth the wait,” he said.

F9 will hit theaters on June 25.

Two ‘Knives Out’ Sequels Are Coming to Netflix

Couldn’t get enough of Daniel Craig (and his drawling southern accent) in Knives Out? You’re in luck: Netflix has signed a deal to release two sequels to the hit 2019 whodunnit, and Craig will reprise his role as detective Benoit Blanc in both films, Variety reports.

Netflix shelled out a hefty $450 million to acquire the rights to the pair of films, and they’re tentatively titled Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3. As for the cast and crew, only two names have been announced so far: Craig and Rian Johnson, who directed the original Knives Out, and will return to helm both movies.

The cast could attract some high-wattage talent, especially considering the original film featured a star-studded lineup: actors like Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer.

Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 will follow Detective Blanc as he pursues new mysteries, ScreenRant reports, so it’s not clear if any of the original cast of characters from the Thrombey family will have roles in the sequels. No matter where the new storylines take the franchise, though, it’ll be hard to top the intense (and hilarious) family drama of the first film:

Knives Out was a notable hit when it premiered in 2019. It netted over $311 million at the box office on a budget of just $40 million, according to ScreenRant. Critics loved it, and the film even earned Rian Johnson an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. Details on Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 are still limited, but filming is expected to begin on the first sequel this summer. We’re definitely looking forward to more head-scratching mysteries, and hopefully an iconic sweater or two as well.

Fortunately, there are plenty of great titles coming up to tide us over. After a year of shuttered theaters and delayed release dates, 2021 has lots of exciting releases in store, including Top Gun: Maverick and Daniel Craig’s latest turn as James Bond in No Time to Die. Check out all of this year’s best upcoming movies in our guide.

Watch the Latest ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Trailers

Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are back for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and from the looks of things, they have a lot of work to do—including learning how to get along with each other. The new series, which is slated for release on March 19 on Disney+, picks up where Avengers: Endgame left off.

Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan) team up in the new series. In the aftermath of Endgame and its epic battle against Thanos, a lot has changed—including Captain America disappearing (via time travel) and leaving behind his shield, which makes an appearance in the first trailer above. Captain America: Civil War villain Baron Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl) returns in the new series alongside Wyatt Russell as John Walker and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter. Kari Skogland will direct the show, which will span six episodes.

Marvel has released a series of trailers and clips that give glimpses of the action we’ll see in the series, including a fight scene atop semi trucks and The Falcon soaring out of a plane. They also hint at some interesting character development between Wilson and Barnes. They don’t get along too well, and in the first trailer, it lands them in a counseling session that devolves into a staring contest, as you’ll see below:

In a behind-the-scenes featurette highlighting Mackie and Stan, the actors go deep on the antagonistic relationship between the two characters.

“It’s an example of opposites attract,” says Mackie. “We couldn’t be more different.”

In the final trailer, though, the two get down to business, and the footage includes some powerful shots of The Falcon learning to master Captain America’s shield. Check it out above.

Stan is very well acquainted with The Winter Soldier: He first played the character in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and has appeared in several sequels over the past decade. Bulking up to play a character with a bionic arm is no joke, as we found out when talking with Stan’s trainer, Don Saladino. For Stan, that involved a lot of kettlebell and carry work to build up his ability to move major weight (you can view the full arm workout here).

“It all comes down to grip strength,” Saladino told Men’s Journal. “That’s what’s going to get you moving that right amount of weight.”

Now it looks like the time in the gym has paid off. Check out the trailers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier above, and look for the series on Disney+ starting March 19.

Michael B. Jordan Searches for Revenge in New ‘Without Remorse’ Trailer

The official trailer for Without Remorse, the Tom Clancy thriller starring Michael B. Jordan, has arrived, and it gives us a telling introduction to Jordan’s character, a former Navy SEAL and CIA operations officer named John Clark. In the trailer, one character remarks to another, “He is more dangerous and effective than any man we have in the field.”

From there, all hell breaks loose.

Although Jordan has teased a clip of the film before, this is the first official glimpse of the upcoming film. Without Remorse is based on Tom Clancy’s 1993 novel of the same name, and it follows Clark as he seeks revenge after Russian assassins murder his wife. Although he manages to kill two of the assassins, he has to track down the third, which leads him to a fiery encounter with a Russian diplomat. He then takes part in a top-secret mission capture the third assassin in Russia, but while there, he uncovers a vast conspiracy—and must choose whether or not to expose the devastating truth.

Clark definitely lives up to the assessment he’s given at the opening clip: As the action jumps between various hand-to-hand combat scenes, parachute drops, and surprise attacks, it’s clear he’s a lethal and effective fighter.

“There’s something inside of me,” Clark says in the trailer, “that I can’t turn off.”

Stefano Sollima, who helmed the action flick Sicario: Day of the Soldado starring Josh Brolin, is in the director’s chair for this film, and Will Staples and Taylor Sheridan, who previously worked with Solima on Sicario, wrote the screenplay. Although the film was originally slated for a theatrical release in Sept. 2020, it will now premiere on April 30 on Amazon Prime.

Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’: Watch the Explosive First Trailer

When Justice League premiered in 2017, the reviews were decidedly mixed: Despite strong performances from cast members like Gal Gadot, critics panned the overwrought special effects and felt the movie seemed cobbled together. One major issue was the departure of director Zack Snyder, who left the film for family reasons. Joss Whedon took over directing duties and handled reshoots, and fans have long suspected that Snyder’s version of the film—the so-called “Snyder Cut”—would be better than the version that was actually released. After years of speculation and hints (even Jason Momoa weighed in), Warner Bros. finally agreed to release Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, and the first trailer dropped over the weekend.

The trailer features Snyder himself introducing the action, and you can watch it below:

It’s been a long road to get here. The original Justice League cost Warner Bros. hundreds of millions of dollars to make and distribute, and the studio lost around $100 million on the film. Considering that huge financial loss and less-than-stellar reviews, the studio was reluctant to invest even more money to make the Snyder Cut. In 2018, Warner Bros. announced it had no plans to release Snyder’s version of the film.

But fans (and Snyder himself) never lost hope. First, there was a widely circulated petition to get Warner Bros. to release the Snyder Cut. In 2019, a fan posted a video of Snyder confirming his cut did exist, but it was up to the studio to actually release it. In May 2020, it became official: The studio announced Zack Snyder’s Justice League would premiere in 2021.

In the trailer, you’ll see plenty of familiar faces from the last Justice League, including Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ben Affleck as Batman, and Henry Cavill as Superman. But Snyder aims to make a very different movie than the 2017 release. He’s refused to watch Joss Whedon’s film, and says the new version of Justice League will be entirely his own.

“I’d destroy the movie, I would set it on fire before I would use a single frame that I did not photograph,” he told The Wrap last July.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League debuts on HBO Max on March 18.
