Actor Michael Peña Talks Disaster Epic ‘Moonfall’

Actor Michael Peña has been making moviegoers laugh and cry for two decades. In the disaster epic Moonfall, he’s adding yet another skill to his repertoire—saving the Earth. We sat down with the actor to get to know him better—but first, the basics:

  • Tastiest Chicago restaurant? Taquerias Atotonilco
  • Biggest vice? Too much coffee
  • Best Jack Ryan movie? Clear and Present Danger with Harrison Ford
  • Favorite travel destination? London

Men’s Journal: What’s it like making a movie about Earth’s destruction with Roland “Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012” Emmerich?

Michael Peña: I loved all those movies—plus Stargate. I remember watching it as a teenager and seeing a Latin actor in it named Alexis Cruz, and thinking it would be a dream to be in one of [Emmerich’s] movies. It was crazy doing Moonfall, I never knew what to expect. People are gonna have a good time watching the movie.

There aren’t many people in Hollywood who can do drama and comedy equally well. What’s the secret?

I’m a character actor. I actually don’t really approach dramas and comedies any differently. The only real difference is that I write more lines for myself in comedies.

You played the legendary farm labor leader Cesar Chavez in a biopic. What should people know about him?

He was ahead of his time. My parents were both farmers when they came from Mexico, and Chavez fought for migrant farm workers and for people without a voice, raising awareness about injustices. Regardless of where you sit politically, you should want people to be treated fairly—and that’s what he was going for.

Season 4 of Jack Ryan was greenlit. How has that character lasted through five movies, five actors and one Amazon show?

Because of [creator] Tom Clancy’s books. He was so good at describing worlds, and the characters he wrote are just so rich. He makes Jack an Everyman who tries to find an edge in fights just through pure hard work. The movies and show capture that—plus they’ve been lucky with casting.

Speaking of, John Krasinski didn’t seem like an obvious choice.

When I first heard he was playing Jack, I was like, “Wait, what?” But in a weird way it works perfectly and makes total sense that the smart guy from The Office is Jack Ryan.

What was it like growing up in Chicago?

We lived a mile north of Cook County Jail. Not the greatest part of town. But I didn’t know we were poor—it was just life. We still had a great time. And my brother now works at the jail.

You’ve been married for 15 years. Is there a secret to that success?

You have to give who you’re with the freedom to be their own person. But really, I don’t know any secret. I think you just don’t take anything for granted, and you never stop going on dates.

Any genius parenting moment raising a teenage son you’d care to share with us?

The name of the game is trying to raise someone who can be themselves. When my son was 7, he asked me, “Dad, do you think I’m lame?” It was heartbreaking, but I sat down with him and we talked. He likes animating, but he didn’t think it was cool. He thought Pixar was cool, though—and I told him, “Listen, those guys didn’t grow up being the coolest guys in their class. Sometimes the things you like are cool—but they just take time until you’re older.”

Sounds like good advice.

Well, I’m not gonna lie—I also told him high school might be a little rough.

Best New Movies of 2022

It’s going to be a big year for movies. From action films to superhero flicks, dramatic thrillers and comedies, the best new movies of 2022 have something for everyone coming to theaters or streaming at home.

Stars like Dwayne Johnson, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt all have highly anticipated movies coming this year among plenty others you won’t want to miss.

Here are the best movies of 2022 we can’t wait to see.

1. The Batman

  • Director: Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes)
  • Cast: Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell
  • Release Date: March 4, 2022

What It’s About: Following Ben Affleck’s run as Batman, director Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson are taking the character in a new direction, focusing on Bruce Wayne/Batman’s early days as the Caped Crusader. Taking place during Batman’s second year of fighting crime in Gotham, a serial killer named the Riddler (Dano) emerges, taking the hero on a trail that will lead him to uncover secrets about Gotham and his family that he never knew. Along the way, Batman will cross paths with burglar Selina Kyle (Kravitz), crime lord Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), rising gangster Oswald Cobblepot (Farrell), policeman James Gordon (Wright), and Gotham district attorney Gil Colson (Sarsgaard). Since this is the early days of Batman, we’ll see the rise of many iconic characters: Oswald’s Penguin isn’t the quite the powerful criminal he’s known as, Commissioner Gordon is just a lieutenant in the GCPD, and Selina isn’t truly Catwoman yet. We won’t give away any surprises, but there are also a few twists and turns in store for Pattinson’s Batman in this film. Reeves is also planning to expand his Bat-verse with a sequel and spin-offs, including an already-announced show centered on Farrell’s Penguin.

Fun Fact: While auditioning for the film, Pattinson took on the time-honored Batman tradition of doing a screen test with a previous actor’s suit. As he mentioned in an interview, he tested in Val Kilmer’s batsuit from Batman Forever, since it was the only one that fit him well enough.

2. Deep Water

  • Director: Adrian Lyne
  • Cast: Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas, Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Jacob Elordi
  • Release Date: March 18, 2022 (Hulu)

What It’s About: In this psychological thriller, a married couple (Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas) start to play mind games with each other that start to spiral out of control, leaving people in their circle dead under mysterious circumstances. The movie is an adaptation of the 1957 Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name and marks the return of director Adrian Lyne to filmmaking after a two-decade absence, with his last film being Unfaithful, which was another thriller involving a married couple.

3. Morbius

  • Director: Daniel Espinosa (Safe House)
  • Cast: Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Tyrese Gibson, Michael Keaton
  • Release Date: April 1, 2022

What It’s About: Following in the footsteps of the Venom series with Tom Hardy and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film, Sony is looking to expand its Spider-Man universe of films with Morbius. Oscar winner Jared Leto stars as Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease and is in search of a cure. During his experiments, he turns himself into a vampire, gaining superhuman abilities like strength, speed, and the ability to heal. Considered one of Spider-Man’s best-known villains—including a run on the classic Spider-Man cartoon in the 90s—it’s likely Morbius could be more of an anti-hero like Venom or a straight-up hero in these movies.

Fun Fact: Michael Keaton is reprising his role from the MCU’s Spider-Man series as Adrian Toomes/Vulture, although it’s unclear how much of a connection the films will have with Marvel’s series for now. Either way, it continues quite a run for Keaton, who won a Screen Actors Guild award for his role on Dopesick, and will be reprising his role as the original big-screen Batman in the upcoming Flash and Batgirl movies for the DC universe.

4. Ambulance

  • Director: Michael Bay (Transformers series)
  • Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eiza Gonzalez, Garret Dillahunt
  • Release Date: April 8, 2022

What It’s About: This crime thriller might be a bit smaller scale for Michael Bay following his recent work in the Ryan Reynolds action film 6 Underground and the Transformers series, but don’t worry, there will be plenty of explosions. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a war veteran who’s desperate for money for his wife’s surgery, turning to his adoptive brother (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) for help. Together, the duo takes part in a massive bank robbery—only things go wrong and they shoot a police officer, then flee in an ambulance, taking an EMT and the officer along for the ride.

Fun Fact: The movie is a remake of a 2005 Danish film of the same name and has been in development since 2015, when Phillip Noyce (The Adjustment Bureau) was attached to direct. Gyllenhaal even got involved behind the camera: In a recent interview, Abdul-Mateen spoke about how his co-star shot some scenes of the movie himself: “There were times when he would take the camera from Mike. And then you look around and Jake is shooting the scene. I had never seen anything like that before. I’m curious about those things, but I would never ask the director if I could shoot a scene.”

5. The Northman

  • Director: Robert Eggers
  • Cast: Alexander Skarsgard, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Björk
  • Release Date: April 22, 2022

What It’s About: If you’re a fan of a show like Vikings, the historical drama The Northman will be up your alley. Inspired by the Scandinavian legend of Amleth, Alexander Skarsgard stars as a Viking warrior and prince who’s out for revenge after his uncle murders his father (Ethan Hawke) when he’s a young child. Following his critically acclaimed work in The Witch and The Lighthouse, Eggers brings his unique directorial style to tenth-century Iceland, staging massive battles of warriors and some incredible, gory action set pieces.

Fun Fact: Strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who most memorably played “The Mountain” on Game of Thrones for five seasons, has a role in the film. It also was almost a family affair for Alexander Skarsgard: His brother Bill (It, Eternals) was originally cast in a role, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues.

6. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

  • Director: Sam Raimi (original Spider-Man trilogy)
  • Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams
  • Release Date: May 6, 2022

What It’s About: The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is ready to go full-multiverse. Following the shenanigans of Spider-Man: No Way Home that saw three different Spider-Men share the screen together, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get another massive dose of the mystic arts. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) returns for the long-awaited followup to the character’s 2016 solo film and must join together with a range of friends and foes from different universes to fight against a mysterious new villain. Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will be a major part of the story—possibly as both a hero and a villain—while different variants of Doctor Strange himself will also appear, including Sinister Strange, Defender Strange, and Supreme Strange. The film will see the MCU debut of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), a fan-favorite comic book character who has the power to travel between dimensions through star-shaped portals. The film will connect back with the Disney Plus series Loki and WandaVision, while also picking up on the threads leftover from Spider-Man: No Way Home. This may be the biggest MCU move since Avengers: Endgame.

Fun Fact: As he’s done in many of Sam Raimi’s films over the years, actor Bruce Campbell will be making a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, although he did not yet reveal who he’ll be playing. Campbell has been friends with Raimi since high school and starred in Raimi’s Evil Dead series. Since those early collaborations, Raimi has found a way to get Campbell a cameo in nearly all his films, including the original Spider-Man trilogy Raimi directed.

7. Top Gun: Maverick

  • Director: Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion)
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Val Kilmer, Jay Ellis, Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro
  • Release Date: May 27, 2022

What It’s About: It’s finally time to enter the danger zone again. Following multiple delays, Tom Cruise is ready to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the anticipated sequel to Top Gun. Picking up over 30 years after the original film, Mitchell is still flying as a test pilot and putting off a promotion that would keep him out of the skies, the place where he’s at his most natural. Soon enough, Maverick finds his biggest challenge yet when he takes on a new class of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission with new planes that not even the best pilots have mastered. Among those cadets? Miles Teller’s Lt. Bradley Bradshaw—the son of Maverick’s late partner Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Cruise isn’t the only one returning to the series, as Val Kilmer is also back to play “Iceman,” while composer Harold Faltermeyer will be updating his iconic score for the sequel. Kosinski has a great visual eye, shown by his work in the underrated Tron: Legacy, and now he’ll put his camera to the sky for Top Gun: Maverick.

Fun Fact: The film was originally set for a July 2019 release, but was pushed back to June 2020 at the time so Kosinski and Cruise could do even more work on the “complex flight sequences.” The extra time allowed Cruise to train in actual planes and Kosinski to find ways to mount cameras on the fighter jets used in the film. As you can see in the trailers, the extra time was well spent.

8. Jurassic World Dominion

  • Director: Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World)
  • Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Justice Smith, Omar Sy, B.D. Wong
    Release Date: June 10, 2022

What It’s About: Picking up four years after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, dinosaurs and humans are now trying to find a way to co-exist. The previous film saw the destruction of the island where Jurassic Park was located, and after saving many of the creatures from the island, Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen (Chris Pratt) uncovered a nefarious plan to sell dinosaurs on the black market. While they were able to stop that from happening, it resulted in dinosaurs roaming across the planet from big cities to deserts to snowy terrains. With dinosaurs seemingly retaking Earth as their own, the big question is which species will be able to survive? The big news about Dominion is the eagerly anticipated return of Jurassic Park’s original trio: Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum.

Fun Fact: The movie was in heavy production in March 2020 just as the COVID-19 pandemic shut most of the world down. Dominion ended up being the first big-budget movie in the world to start filming during the pandemic, with production resuming in July 2020 with strict Covid protocols. Many of those protocols were adopted by other studio productions to continue filming during 2020.

9. Lightyear

  • Director: Angus MacLane
  • Cast: Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
  • Release Date: June 17, 2022

What It’s About: This could be a fun ride for everyone in the family. The movie will tell the (fictional) origin story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear, the character who was the inspiration for the Buzz Lightyear toy in the Toy Story films. Chris Evans stars as the titular space ranger, who travels across the galaxy and explores new worlds, creatures, and dangers before becoming the hero Andy Davis admires in the Toy Story series. The meta premise is a way for the franchise to keep going without actually making a direct sequel, and if this story is a success, we could see more missions of Buzz Lightyear in the future.

Fun Fact: The film expands off the story nugget from the original Toy Story film, in which the character, Andy, saw a movie that popularized the Buzz Lightyear character, making him the most popular new toy on the market.

10. Elvis

  • Director: Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby)
  • Cast: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Samuel, and Kodi Smit-McPhee
  • Release Date: June 24, 2022

What It’s About: For his first feature film in nearly a decade, director Baz Luhrmann is turning his attention to one of the most notable figures in American history: Elvis Presley. The biopic will follow Elvis’s life as he rises up the ranks to become one of the most famous musicians and movie stars in the world. Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) stars as Elvis, while Tom Hanks is playing Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, who discovered the singer and helped him become a worldwide sensation.

Fun Fact: Butler beat out some notable names for the role, including Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and singer Harry Styles.

11. Thor: Love and Thunder

  • Director: Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok)
  • Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Russell Crowe
  • Release Date: July 8, 2022

What It’s About: The God of Thunder is ready to return: Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor, appearing in an MCU project for the first time since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Plot details are being kept mostly under wraps, but what we do know is that Waititi is taking elements from writer Jason Aaron’s fan-favorite comic run on the Mighty Thor, which saw Jane Foster become Thor herself, gaining powers and Thor’s hammer in the process. Natalie Portman is returning to the franchise as Jane for the first time in nearly a decade since appearing in Thor: The Dark World, meaning she’ll likely fight alongside Thor as a hero herself. Christian Bale is playing the villain Gorr the God Butcher, marking his return to superhero movies after his iconic turn as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of films. Other story threads that will get picked up after Endgame include Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) continuing to lead Asgaard as King, along with Thor’s rivalry with Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, whose heroes like Drax (Dave Bautista) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) will also appear in the film.

Fun Fact: After appearing as Asgardian actors telling the story of the previous Thor movie to comedic effect in Thor: Ragnarok, Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth will cameo again as Loki, Odin, and Thor, while Melissa McCarthy will appear alongside them as Hela, and the villain will be played by Cate Blanchett.

Trailer not yet released.

12. Bullet Train

  • Director: David Leitch
  • Cast: Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Joey King, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Zazie Beetz
  • Release Date: July 15, 2022

What It’s About: Brad Pitt stars as an aging assassin named Ladybug, who’s tasked with picking up a briefcase on a bullet train from Tokyo. What he doesn’t know is that the train is filled with a number of other assassins (including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Joey King, and Hiroyuki Sanada) who all want their hands on the package too. Leitch has plenty of experience working in the action genre, having directed films like John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs & Shaw, so expect some unique fight scenes on this bullet train.

Fun Fact: Lady Gaga was originally going to star in the movie as Ladybug’s handler but had to drop out because of scheduling issues with House of Gucci, with Sandra Bullock taking her place. Pitt also took some hits on this movie, as stunt coordinator Greg Rementer told Vulture the star did nearly all of his own stunts: “Brad did 95 percent of his physical stunts—the fighting. He’s like a natural-born athlete. He really got in there!”

13. Nope

  • Director: Jordan Peele
  • Cast: Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott
  • Release Date: July 22, 2022

What It’s About: Following his mind-blowing work on Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele is back behind the camera for his third original movie. As usual, plot details are being kept under lock and key, but the premise is centered around a small town in rural California that deals with a mysterious event—maybe aliens or UFOs?—that starts to terrorize and kidnap people in the town. Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer star as the owners of Haywood Ranch, which is located in the town and trains horses for Hollywood productions. If this film is anything like Peele’s previous two other movies, there certainly will be some scares and twists along the way.

14. Black Adam

  • Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
  • Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan.
  • Release Date: October 21, 2022

What It’s About: Dwayne Johnson will take on the mantle of the titular antihero Black Adam in the upcoming DC superhero film, bringing the fan-favorite character to the screen for the first time. While story details are being kept behind closed doors, it’ll likely tell the story of how the ancient God-like character made his way to the present day. In comics lore, Black Adam is imprisoned for thousands of years before finding his way out, and the story could pick up on some of those classic threads. We already know that the Justice Society of America will be involved, but will Black Adam be fighting alongside the team—or against them? Noah Centineo is set to play Atom Smasher, a member of the JSA who can grow to massive size, while Aldis Hodge will portray Hawkman, one of the leaders of the team. Black Adam is also a classic foe for Shazam (Zachary Levi), so this film could have some connections back to the Shazam series.

Fun Fact: Johnson has been looking to play Black Adam for over a decade, and the film has been in development for even longer than that. Johnson became attached to the film when it was going to be a Captain Marvel/Shazam-centered project in which he would play the titular hero, but he later showed interest in portraying Black Adam instead. Over the years the project morphed into two separate projects, with Zachary Levi playing Shazam in the 2019 film and Johnson fronting his own Black Adam movie.

15. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

  • Director: Ryan Coogler (Creed)
  • Cast: Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Dominique Thorne
  • Release Date: November 11, 2022

What It’s About: With the sad news about Chadwick Boseman passing in 2020, the filmmakers of the Black Panther sequel had to change course, while also finding a way to honor the incredible character Boseman portrayed in King T’Challa. Specific plot details have not been released, but the story might focus on who will take over the Black Panther mantle and step into the void that T’Challa left behind. That could mean more screen time for the warrior M’Baku (Winston Duke); T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright); Dora Milaje/special forces leader Okoye (Danai Gurira); and Wakandan spy Nakia. This will be the first return to the world of Wakanda since the Avengers films and there will be a lot of story threads to pull, like what happened in the nation during the five-year blip? While Okoye survived and appears in Avengers: Endgame, we never get to see her in action in Wakanda and that could be a great way to catch things up to the present-day story.

Fun Fact: Something we do know is that parts of the movie will be set at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has some major connections in the MCU already, as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) attended the school. Part of that may tie into Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), who becomes the Iron Man-inspired Ironheart and has her own Disney Plus series on the horizon. Williams is set to make her debut in this film and it could put her on the path to get an Iron suit of her own.

Trailer not yet released.

16. The Gray Man

  • Director: Joe Russo and Anthony Russo
  • Cast: Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Billy Bob Thornton, Regé-Jean Page
  • Release Date: 2022, Netflix (Specific release date not yet announced)

What It’s About: Based on the first book in the Gray Man series of spy novels by Mark Greaney, directors Joe and Anthony Russo make their return to the world of big-budget action films after their work on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The story centers on Ryan Gosling’s Court Gentry, the titular “Gray Man,” a CIA mercenary who has a hidden identity no one in the world knows. When Court uncovers a conspiracy involving the agency itself, he goes on the run and has a target put on him by Lloyd Hansen, an off-the-rails former colleague of Court’s played by Chris Evans. Gentry is forced to go on the run around the world as groups of different assassins come after him. The excellent supporting cast includes Ana de Armas, who co-starred with Evans in Knives Out and Gosling in Blade Runner 2049.

Fun Fact: An adaptation of the novel has been in development for over a decade, with various actors in talks to star as the Gray Man, including Brad Pitt with James Gray (Ad Astra) as director. Later on, Charlize Theron was in talks to star with the character being gender-flipped as a woman. That version was going to be written, but not directed by the Russo Brothers, as they were busy working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clearly the brothers were excited about the film, as they now have delivered it as their next directing project.

Trailer not yet released.

17. Knives Out 2

  • Director: Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi)
  • Cast: Daniel Craig, Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, Ethan Hawke
  • Release Date: 2022, Netflix (Specific release date not yet announced)

What It’s About: Following the box office success of Knives Out, director Rian Johnson is back to write and direct the sequel, a whole new murder mystery for Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc to solve. This time around, Blanc will be investigating a case that takes him to Greece and he’ll be the only character returning from the first film. As you can see from the list above, the cast for this movie is stacked with actors, including Dave Bautista, who will get the chance to once again show his comedic chops like he has in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

Fun Fact: After the box office success of Knives Out making over $300 million worldwide, Netflix outbid Apple and Amazon to lock in a $469 million deal for two more sequels starring Craig. The James Bond series made Craig a very rich man, and he will earn another $100 million to star in the two Knives Out follow-ups.

Trailer not yet released.

Zac Efron on Season 2 of ‘Down to Earth’

In the spring of 2020, travel wasn’t particularly high on anybody’s to-do list. The COVID-19 pandemic had just emerged around the globe, and most of us were tethered to our couches. Things were bleak, but there was a lifeline for cooped-up globetrotters: Zac Efron’s Down to Earth, a show chronicling his journeys around the world in search of healthier, more sustainable ways of living. In its first season, Efron and his co-host, Darin Olien, traveled to places like Iceland, Puerto Rico, and the Amazon rainforest. The two met with innovators coming up with solutions to a wide range of issues, from pollution to hurricane recovery and more. The show became a surprise hit, and Season 2 is slated for release later this year.

But that’s not all Efron’s been up to. He also partnered with AT&T as part of the company’s Life, Gig-ified launch, a creative series highlighting AT&T’s upgraded fiber-optic network. As a part of the launch, he developed his own segment. We recently caught up with Efron to learn more about how he stays connected in an increasingly digital world and what’s coming next on Down to Earth.

Men’s Journal: You partnered with AT&T for its Life, Gig-ified launch. How did you come up with the idea for your segment?

Zac Efron: I met with AT&T and the director, Ira Rosensweig. As we discussed the concept, it sort of took on a life of its own that we all loved…I think it’s a really fun concept and we had a great time doing it.

This launch is all about delivering more content at faster speeds. As a content creator, what does that mean for you?

Speed is huge for the creative process. One of the most challenging parts is the immediacy. Sometimes you’re putting out an hour-long piece of content you filmed yesterday, so every second of the process counts. The less time we have to spend waiting on uploads and downloads, the more time we get to make the content better.

From the rise of streaming platforms to TikTok to virtual reality, there have been so many recent changes in the way we create and experience entertainment. What do you think will be the next big thing? What are you most excited about?

I’m amazed at how quickly tech is changing. Whether I’m working on a film or television project or creating digital content, I want to stay up to date on the technology. I’m fascinated by consuming content in different forms and I love the idea this is a constantly evolving process. I don’t know what lies ahead but I’m excited to discover and utilize the next big thing.

Your show Down to Earth was a major hit. What inspired you to do the show?

It was a dream come true to travel the world and put the spotlight on some amazing people and places.

What was the best and the worst thing you ate in season one?

The homemade pasta in Italy was insane. I don’t think I had a bad meal on that trip. There might have been something iffy I had in Costa Rica.

What’s it like working with Darin Olien on the show?

He’s one of my great mates and mentors. He’s taught me so much about living life to the fullest.

Will Down to Earth Season 2 be different from Season 1 in any major ways? Can you give us any hints

Season 2 has a focus on the environmental dilemmas we’re facing today. We met some great people with fascinating solutions.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

‘Uncharted’ Trailer: Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg Team Up for Deadly Treasure Hunt

Sony released another trailer for its upcoming action flick Uncharted, and if you’re a fan of Indiana Jones-style adventure films, you won’t want to miss this one. The film, which stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, follows the duo as they travel the globe to unearth a fantastic treasure lost by explorer Ferdinand Magellan centuries ago.

Uncharted is based on the popular video game of the same name, according to Deadline, and stars Holland as the young thief Nick Drake. In the film, Drake gets recruited by the experienced treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan, played by Wahlberg, for a very difficult job: Tracking down and securing Magellan’s lost fortune.

Apart from the challenge of solving one of the oldest mysteries in the world, the duo has to find the treasure before it’s taken by Moncada (played by Antonio Banderas), the head of a powerful family who believes he’s the treasure’s rightful owner.

As the trailer shows, the film will be a high-adrenaline ride that follows Drake and Sullivan across the globe in search of untold riches (and perhaps answers to another mystery: What happened to Drake’s missing brother), all while trying to stay one step ahead of Moncada. Eye-watering cargo plane stunts, jungle showdowns, centuries-old ships flying through the air while slung beneath helicopters—there will be plenty of edge-of-your seat action in this flick.

Ruben Fleischer, who also helmed 2018’s Venom and 2009’s Zombieland, directed the film. Unfortunately, it’s been plagued with delays thanks to COVID and Holland’s shooting schedule with the latest Spiderman film. But after a long wait, it’s almost here: Uncharted will premiere in theaters on Feb. 18, 2022.

Take Your Screen Everywhere With the XGIMI Elfin

Home movie projectors are the bomb, but with a catch. They’re either super-expensive behemoths or conveniently cheaper and compact with noticeably inferior audio-visual quality. Enter the XGIMI Elfin, and you finally get the best of both worlds—a light, compact projector (about the size of a book) with a crisp, vivid picture and outstanding audio provided by onboard Harman Kardon speakers. Adding to the convenience, this two-pound wonder will stream from a smartphone. Simply connect it to the internet and enjoy most online movie platforms, including Amazon, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV+, etc. for a fraction of the usual home projection cost, size, and weight.

Watching from a laptop is also a snap with the XGIMI Elfin. Just pair the projector via Bluetooth and cue up your favorite shows; AI-powered image correction instantly finds the optimal screen size on your wall of choice. Plus the projector auto-keystones every time you move it, assuring a distortion-free rectangular image. Whether tonight’s movie night is on the bedroom wall or in the backyard with friends, Elfin maintains image with 800 ANSI lumens that power FHD resolution for sharp, colorful images well beyond 10 feet wide, accompanied by excellent sound.

The projector is easiest to pair with an Android device, but will also mate with an iOS phone and computer. To mirror your laptop screen, you can download Airscreen from the Apple App Store. On Android, download Google Home to connect with the projector.

The Elfin comes with a slim remote control that lets you skip episodes, easily move around on the screen, and type in passwords for swift internet and video account connection. You can also bypass the remote and just use the Android TV app to control the projector.

Super transportable, the Elfin brings superior audio-visual where you need it. Stash it in a backpack or briefcase. Bring it to the classroom or work for audio-visual presentations that will never fail to impress.

The Elfin is clearly a personal projector. This one’s not designed for IMAX-sized streaming or projection from great distances. But when it comes to enjoying movie quality shows without staring at a laptop or feeling confined to the TV room, there’s no better looking choice right now for your eyes and wallet.

Corey Stoll on the Enduring Appeal of ‘The Sopranos’

Corey Stoll, the star of Showtime’s Billions does double duty this fall as Junior Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark—the long-awaited film prequel to The Sopranos. We caught up with the actor to get the low down—but first, the basics.

  • Best foreign word? Gesamtkunstwerk.
  • Superhero crush? Psylocke.
  • Earliest memory? Getting into the beer and pickles in my parents’ rented cabin in the Adirondacks.
  • Last Amazon buy? BB-8 backpack for my son on his first day of 1st grade.

Men’s Journal: Uncle June is Uncle June. How’d you approach the prequel version of a TV icon like Junior Soprano?

Corey Stoll: I started by watching all 86 episodes of The Sopranos for the third time. I only had a couple months to do that, which I don’t recommend. It’s brilliant—and brutal. You need to take that show in manageable doses. The dialect coach also compiled all of Junior’s jokes for me, which was helpful.

You get the jokes, you get the guy.

They’re a great way to get into character. Junior’s jokes are crazy sexist and racist, but he’s got this odd rhythm and charm for such a misanthrope. I’d get those rhythms into my body, then let go and just play the scene.

The Sopranos are as unevolved as it gets. Why are they so likable?

Part of it may be that they’re such a close-knit community. So many of us are missing that. Say what you want about them, they’re super tight and it gives their lives meaning. I heard there’s been a huge resurgence of interest in The Sopranos during the pandemic.

Your latest stage roles are Macbeth and Iago. Is playing a nasty guy more fun than a navel-gazer like Hamlet?

I should probably get to Hamlet at some point. But Macbeth is hard to beat in terms of exploring all the extremes of one personality.

Is your son a Yellowjacket fan or an Ant-Man fan? Or is he playing it safe with Shazam?

He loves his Ant-Man toys but hasn’t seen the movie. He’s a little young. I’m curious to see how that goes.

Even though paternal loyalty may pose an ethical dilemma for him?

Hey, it’s fun to root for the bad guy.

Which New York do you love more, 1980s or 2020s?… Let’s say 2019.

You always look back with rose-colored glasses. Every day something else becomes an H&M or Citibank here, but now you can bike everywhere. I think change is what keeps New York so compelling—and tragic.

Who are you most known for around town? Peter Russo or is billionaire Michael Prince gaining ground?

Peter Russo still gets familiar looks. People also recognize me from The Strain and Hemingway from Midnight in Paris.

West Side Story or Sound of Music?

West Side Story. Hands down.

You’re Lt. Schrank in the filmed remake out in December. Ever think you’d be in a Steven Spielberg musical?

I thought maybe a Spielberg movie. Not a musical.

He seems nice. What’s Steve really like?

Nice. He gave me cookies. The nicest cookies I’ve ever had.

Where are you now, and where are you headed?

I’m in my basement gym in Brooklyn. I’m gonna run upstairs, take a shower, then head to the Billions set.

Is being a billionaire all it’s cracked up to be?

It is if your character’s last name is Prince. I wouldn’t do well with it. I could do $50 million. Any more is pure guilt.

Brett Goldstein on the Magic of ‘Ted Lasso’

Brett Goldstein, the breakout star on Ted Lasso, laces up and lets the expletives fly so people can finally have something to smile about. Get to know the actor like never before in the Q&A below. But first, the basics.

  • Go-to workout routine: I exercise every day for at least half an hour and I do Pilates.
  • Favorite sporting moment: When Lucas Moura brought his baby onto the pitch after scoring a hat trick.
  • Last vacation: Greece.
  • Best advice: You’ll be dead soon, so you may as well do it.

Men’s Journal: Congrats on all the Emmy noms!

Brett Goldstein: It’s mental. Truthfully, none of us expected anyone to watch the show. It feels like it’s a prank and I keep waiting for people to go, “Only joking!”

Why do you think Ted Lasso is so endearing to viewers?

I’ve thought about that a lot and think the show’s success is a reaction to all the negative public discourse that’s been all over our screens, in the media, in the news that’s become so mean and unpleasant. People were proud of being horrible to each other and it was ugly and disturbing how normalized it had all become. So the success of Ted Lasso speaks to how starved we are to see people look out for each other, despite challenges in their own life. The show tapped into this need for decency.

Your character, Roy Kent, could use some work on his manners.…

Well, I love that character. We have a lot in common.

How did you go from being a writer on the show to being cast as Roy?

I really understood him, but I also knew that no one was thinking of me for the part. So I made a video of me doing five things as Roy and I emailed it to the producers, saying, “Look, if this is embarrassing or shit, you can just pretend you never got it. However, if you like it, I think I could play Roy.” And then they just couldn’t be bothered to keep looking, so I got the part.

How close is Roy to your own self?

The only difference is he’s a better footballer than I am and I’m probably a bit more emotionally articulate than him. And I have the gene that worries about what people will think of me if I’m rude, whereas Roy Kent doesn’t have that. But the level of anger is the same. I just hide it better.

When was the last time you got angry?

This morning. I’m angry all the time.

Is Jason Sudeikis as positive as his character, Ted Lasso?

I think the philosophies are the same, yeah. Ted’s a slightly more exaggerated version of the real Jason.

What’s it like working with Jason?

I’ve learned a lot from him, how every line, every scene and every joke matters. Nothing is an accident. Fans write essays about different scenes, so that tells us that all the hard work was worth it.

Have you taken Jason out for a proper session in London?

Yes, we have! It was tricky because of Covid but we’ve had some fun. He held his own!

Do you follow football?

Yes, I support Tottenham Hotspur, so I know the phrase, “It’s the hope that kills you.”

So what happened in the Euro final?

England played really well. We deserved it as much as anyone and penalties are a fucking nightmare.

You don’t think it was a mistake to have a 19-year-old (Bukayo Saka) take the most important shot for England in the past 60 years?

No. You have no idea and anyone at any age could have missed that penalty. The reality of that kind of pressure is something you can’t practice for. Well done to them all.

Best Bonds of All Time, Ranked

It’s one of the most iconic roles in film history: The name’s Bond, James Bond. Only a select group of actors have had the chance to play the character, with Daniel Craig about to finish his run with the long-anticipated No Time to Die. Before him, five other actors have “officially” played Bond: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan. With the question still very much in the air about who will play Bond after Craig hangs up his tuxedo—perhaps one of these actors?—here’s a look back at the best bonds of all time, ranked.

Best Bonds of All Time, Ranked

7. David Niven

It’s probably not even fair to compare David Niven (and Peter Sellers) to the rest of the best Bonds, as the two actors played the role for laughs in 1967’s Casino Royale, but the film remains a notable part—even if not an official part—of James Bond history. Based on the same book that would later launch Daniel Craig to superstardom in his 2006 Bond debut, the film is a parody of spy films of the era, including the Sean Connery-led Bond films. The entire cast was filled with stars: Niven had already won an Oscar for Best Actor and Sellers was considered one of the most popular comic actors in the world. Other Hollywood legends like John Huston, George Raft, William Holden, Peter O’Toole, and Orson Welles all appeared, with Welles playing the villain Le Chiffre. The movie went very meta in making fun of the Bond films, even bringing in original Bond girl Ursula Andress from Dr. No to play Vesper Lynd. Both Sellers and Nevin take on the mantle of Bond in the movie—and while the tone is obviously completely different from any other Bond flick before or after, seeing each in a tuxedo taking on the villainous organization “SMERSH” (a thinly disguised joke on Bond’s Spectre), makes one wonder if either of the talented stars could have actually pulled off a “real” James Bond film.

Number of appearances: 1

Bond film: Casino Royale (1967)

Fun fact: James Bond creator Ian Fleming originally wanted Niven to play Bond in Dr. No, but the producers went with Sean Connery instead.

6. Timothy Dalton

Timothy Dalton stepped in with a pretty big challenge, coming after Sean Connery and Roger Moore, among the best Bonds, who each played the role for over a decade. The filmmakers of Dalton’s two Bond movies wanted to show a different side of the character, one that was more in line with Ian Fleming’s book version of Bond, rather than the playboy-type most fans were used to seeing. The result was a performance more in line with what Daniel Craig would end up doing later—a serious, business-like Bond who battled against KGB agents and drug cartels rather than flamboyant villains. Dalton only had two movies to make his mark—lawsuits ended up derailing his chance at making another movie before Pierce Brosnan was handed the reins—so it’s hard to compare with the best Bonds of the bunch. That said, both films are solid and 1989’s License to Kill might be one of the best Bond titles of the series.

Number of appearances: 2

Bond films: The Living Daylights (1987) and License to Kill (1989)

Fun fact: The Bond series hadn’t used an Aston Martin since 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, but the company made a return to the franchise with The Living Daylights, and they’ve been used in every Bond film since.

5. George Lazenby

George Lazenby has the inglorious milestone of being the only official James Bond actor to star in just one film in the series, taking over for Sean Connery in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The film has one of the darkest and bleakest endings of any Bond film—spoiler alert: after marrying “Bond girl” Tracy, the couple are attacked by iconic Bond villain Blofeld, leaving Tracy dead and Bond holding her in his arms. Like we said, bleak. In part due to that dark ending, the film was not well-received at the time, but over the years both the film and Lazenby’s performance have been re-assessed by critics and fans alike as one of the better entries in the series. Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh calls it his favorite Bond film, while a 2012 poll from 007 Magazine saw fans vote it as the greatest of the series. Lazenby bowed out of the franchise after just one film, allowing Connery to return on what was a then-record salary of $1.25 million. While he was short-lived as Bond, Lazenby went on to have a lengthy film and television career—which is still ongoing—and he remains active on Instagram, frequently posting about the Bond series and his time filming his one movie.

Number of appearances: 1

Bond film: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

Fun fact: Lazenby’s role as Bond was his first-ever film appearance. He had been a model and starred in commercials before being cast in the role.

4. Roger Moore

Of all the best Bonds, Roger Moore’s portrayal might be the most representative of the era his films were made in (the 70s)—and he reflected that with his dashing charm and over-the-top persona, bringing comedy to the series that contrasted Connery’s gruff-but-suave Bond. Moore’s Bond was less serious and way wittier, but he also took the character to new heights. Moonraker saw Bond battle villains in space, including Richard Kiel’s memorable henchman Jaws. Moore was already a bit of an established name before taking on the role of the superspy, having starred in television series like The Saint and Maverick, but Bond brought him worldwide stardom and he stayed in the role for over 10 years and seven films—the longest consecutive James Bond until Daniel Craig.

Number of appearances: 7

Bond films: Live and Let Die (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983), A View to a Kill (1985)

Fun fact: Moore was the oldest actor to portray Bond, as he was 57 years old when his final film, A View to a Kill, was released in 1985.

3. Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan did a solid job as Bond, with GoldenEye as his best entry of the series—a movie that spawned one of the best video games of all time. While Brosnan’s turn as the iconic spy doesn’t quite reach the level of best Bonds like Daniel Craig or Sean Connery, he helped bring the franchise back to worldwide prominence after Timothy Dalton’s turn left some fans cold. The six-year break between movies was a long one for Bond, and that put pressure on Brosnan to deliver a performance that would get fans jazzed again. On that level, he certainly delivered. Brosnan’s Bond brought back more of the flamboyant villains, secret lairs, and wild gadgets to the series after Dalton’s more serious-tinged films, for better and worse. The action scenes are incredible throughout the series, but the gadgets and storylines often veered into the ridiculous (like invisible cars and DNA restructuring), and some of the dialogue was cheesy. In the end though, Brosnan helped bring the franchise back to life and formed the bridge that led the Bond series from its traditional roots into the big-budget blockbusters of modern Hollywood.

Number of appearances: 4

Bond films: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), Die Another Day (2002),

Fun fact: Brosnan was hired to play Bond before Timothy Dalton was brought in, but was forced to return to his series Remington Steele instead. The show had been canceled, but when NBC decided to bring the show back, Brosnan was obligated to return and he had to give up the role. Clearly it all worked out in the end.

2. Daniel Craig

After starring in five films, Craig has firmly established himself as one of the best Bonds ever—maybe even the best of the bunch. Craig’s portrayal brought the character to contemporary times, creating a more realistic, gritty version of the spy following Pierce Brosnan’s more polished take. When he was first cast, fans signed petitions against him, complaining he was too blonde and not tall enough to play Bond, but once Casino Royale hit theaters, people quickly changed their tune. The film opened with Bond earning his “00” designation, allowing Craig to show Bond work his way up to becoming the expert spy we all know and love. Craig’s Bond took punches, got bruised, sometimes failed, and fought hard, crafting some of the best action scenes of any blockbuster movie to date. Craig has the distinction of giving Bond its first billion-dollar film with Skyfall, the Sam Mendes-directed movie that many critics saw as a modern high-point for the series. The five Academy Award nominations, including the major category of Best Cinematography, and two wins only bolsters that point. One thing that helps Craig’s Bond stand out among the actors who came before him is the through line of his first relationship: his tragic love for Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) in Casino Royale. While Craig’s Bond had his fair share of beautiful women along the way, it’s Lynd he kept coming back to, even into No Time to Die. Brooding over Vesper’s death gave Craig a chance to give Bond some added depth and humanity, and is one reason why fans have become so invested in his version of the character.

Number of appearances: 5

Bond films: Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), No Time to Die (2021)

Fun fact: Craig beat out actors like Henry Cavill (yes, that Henry Cavill), Sam Worthington, Goran Visnjic and Dougray Scott for the role of Bond.

Sean Connery on set of 'You Only Live Twice'
Sean Connery on set of ‘You Only Live Twice’ Eon/Ua/Kobal/Shutterstock

1. Sean Connery

When it comes down to naming the best Bonds, it’s hard to beat the original. Connery starred as Bond in six “official” movies and once in the non-Eon produced Never Say Never Again. (Connery was lured back to play Bond for that seventh and final time in the 1983 adaptation with a massive payday even though Roger Moore was also starring as the iconic spy at the time.) Many of Connery’s films are considered some of the most memorable of the series, including Dr. No, Diamonds Are Forever, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger, which was the first Bond movie to make over $100 million at the box office. Connery’s Bond established basically all the elements that would pop up in the series through the decades, including the slick wardrobe, suave demeanor, his taste for martinis, fancy cars, and high-tech gadgets. But more than that, Connery brought the perfect combination of charm, toughness, and humor to the role, something all the actors after him tried to emulate, for better and worse. It was Connery who took Bond on his shoulders and lifted him to the worldwide stage, starting a series that’s become one of the longest-running and successful in movie history.

Number of appearances: 7

Bond films: Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Never Say Never Again (1983)

Fun fact: Connery wore a hairpiece when he played Bond, as he started to lose his hair around the time he got the role.

Flula Borg Gained 25 Pounds of Muscle With ‘The Suicide Squad’ Workout

Maybe seeing “Flula Borg workout” wouldn’t have gotten your attention in the past. The German comedian has never been known for being jacked. But if you’ve seen the trailer for the new Suicide Squad, you’ve caught a glimpse of Borg as Javelin, a relatively unknown DC character. He’s a former Olympic athlete who carries around a javelin as a weapon (naturally). So how did Borg, a self-proclaimed “skinny dude,” add slabs of muscle to his frame? He enlisted the help of Los Angeles trainer Paolo Mascitti, whose custom strength-building program scored him 25 pounds of muscle mass.

“My usual routine used to be working out for 20 minutes, eating nothing, and staring at the television for the rest of the day,” Borg tells Men’s Journal. “Paolo told me that wasn’t going to fly.”

Borg also happens to have a supercharged metabolism, so bulking him up required 7,000 calories a day. Read all about the making of an ex-Olympic supervillain here.

The Olympic Lifting Workout That Put 25 Pounds of Muscle on Flula Borg for ‘The Suicide Squad’

Directions: This is a sample circuit Mascitti built for Borg to add muscle mass and increase overall strength. The first two movements are done individually as drop and reverse drop sets to get maximum muscle fatigue. That’s followed by three supersets, where two movements are done back to back with no rest between exercises. Complete the four supersets before moving down to the next pair of movements, taking one minute of rest between each.

1. Barbell Bench Press

5 sets x 15-12-10-8-6 reps (increase weight while decreasing rep count)

How to do it: Grasp the bar just outside shoulder-width apart and arch your back so there’s space between your low back and the bench. Unrack the barbell, then lower it to your sternum, tucking elbows about 45 degrees to your sides. When the bar touches your chest, drive your feet into the floor and press it back up to the starting position.

2. Flat Dumbbell Press

4 sets x 6-8-10-12 reps (decrease weight while increasing rep count)

How to do it: Sit on a flat bench, resting dumbbells on tops of thighs. “Kick” the weights off your legs as you lie down and bring dumbbells to chest level, rotating palms so they face forward. Press the weights up until your arms are fully extended, pause for a moment, then repeat.

3A. Cable Crossover

4 sets x 15 reps

How to do it: Standing with your back to the machine, position the pulleys so they’re level with your shoulders. Grab the handles with each hand and lunge forward into a split stance. Keeping a slight bend in the elbows, press the cables forward in a wide arc until the handles are in front of your face and arms are parallel to each other. Your chest should feel contracted and engaged. Pause for a moment, then slowly let the cables pull your arms back to the starting position.

3B. Incline Barbell Bench Press

4 sets x 6-8-10-12 reps (decrease weight while increasing rep count)

How to do it: Set a bench to a 45-degree incline. Grasp the bar just outside shoulder width and arch your back slightly so there’s space between your lower back and bench. Unrack the barbell, then lower it to your sternum, tucking elbows about 45 degrees to your sides. When the bar touches your chest, drive your feet into the floor and press it back up to the starting position.

4A. Low-to-High Cable Crossover

4 sets x 15 reps

How to do it: Standing with your back to the machine, position the pulleys so they’re low by the ground. Grab the handles with each hand and lunge forward into a split stance (hands should be by hips). Keeping a slight bend in the elbows, bring the cables upward and forward in an arc until the handles are in front of your face and arms are parallel to each other. Your chest should feel contracted and engaged. Pause for a moment, then slowly let the cables pull your arms back to the starting position.

4B. Decline Dumbbell Press

4 sets x 6-8-10-12 reps (decrease weight while increasing rep count)

How to do it: Set a bench to a 45-degree decline. Sit, resting dumbbells on tops of thighs. “Kick” the weights off your legs as you lie back, anchor your feet under the pads, and bring dumbbells to chest level. Rotate palms so they face forward. Lower the dumbbells until your forearms are perpendicular to the ground, then press the weights up until arms are fully extended. Pause for a moment, then repeat.

5A. Dips

4 sets x 15 reps

How to do it: At a dip station, or using two stacks of plyo boxes on either side, press up and tuck legs. Keeping chest slightly tipped forward, bend elbows to dip as low as you can, aiming for hands to be parallel to pecs. Reverse movement to starting position.

5B. Triceps Cable Pushdowns

4 sets x 10 reps

How to do it: Set the pulley to the top position, then face the machine. Grab the horizontal cable bar or attachment with an overhand grip so, when in hand, it’s at chest level. Starting with elbows at your side, forearms perpendicular to your body, push down on the bar until arms are extended. Your core should be engaged throughout the entire movement. Pause for a moment, then return to the start position in a controlled fashion.

6A. Skull Crushers

4 sets x 12 reps

How to do it: Pick a dumbbell up and lie down on a flat bench. Hold the weight with both hands on either end, then press it over your chest. Bring the weight down in a controlled movement behind your head, flexing your elbows, and keeping upper arms straight. Once it taps the bench, engage your triceps to bring the dumbbell back to start. Start light with the weight, and try not to move your elbows to assist with the lift.

6B. Standing Overhead Cable Triceps Extensions

4 sets x 12 reps

How to do it: Position the pulley at the tallest height and attach a rope extension. Grab the attachment with both hands and lift it over your head so you can face away from the machine, then lean forward and assume a staggered stance. Hold the rope over your head with elbows forward and arms bent. Extend your arms in front of you by engaging the triceps; don’t use your upper arms. Slowly reverse to return to start.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6.

Jason Momoa’s Harley-Davidson Collection Is a Marvel

Jason Momoa. To know him is to love him—and his obsession with vintage Harley-Davidson choppers. The actor has a penchant for all things that go vroom (as evidenced by his Instagram). “I hoard everything when it comes to bikes and trucks and cars,” he says in his July/August cover story.

While touring his temporary Toronto digs, and later feasting on tomahawk rib-eyes, Momoa waxed poetic on Harley-Davidson. He’s got ’36, ’37, and ’39 knuckleheads parked on the grounds. “Those are just my choppers. My other bikes are on the way here,” he admits. “I love them all—knuckles, pans, shovels. They’re all different, they all sound great, and they’re all fucking awesome.”

His infatuation isn’t singular. Momoa’s a “gas and oil guy,” he admits, while sharing a photo of an antique Land Rover he just locked down by trading for two bikes from his collection.

But there’s something to be said about the guttural sound “when you kickstart the bike and the motor growls right back at you,” he says. We agree, but times are changing and Momoa, who regularly steamrolls A-list buddies for posing with plastic single-use water bottles, is all about making choices that benefit the planet. Naturally, he’s edging into electric.

“A lot of my trucks have been converted into e-vehicles,” he says. “I run solar power, and I love Harley’s electric LiveWire. You twist the throttle and jump to 100 miles an hour in three or four seconds. It’s a whole different sport, and there ain’t nothin’ about it except—bravo!”
