50 Best Winter Vacations in the U.S. and Canada

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 2:42 pm

When you think of the best winter vacations, chances are your brain starts churning out epic ideas like skiing famous Swiss peaks in St. Moritz, Zermatt, and Matterhorn; trekking Patagonia’s glacial tunnels and craggy mountains; or chasing the northern lights across Scandinavia. But there’s a ton of adventure to be had closer to home—so close, you might not even need to book a flight.

That doesn’t just mean strapping on your skis at your local mountain. You can try winter surfing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, airboarding in Scranton, PA, and ice biking in Buffalo, NY. And, of course, there’s plenty of skiing to be had, too.

This season, head to one of the 50 best winter vacations that are relatively easy to get to while whisking you away. From the Canadian wilderness all the way down to the mountains of Arizona, these are the best snowy destinations to get your thrills in three days or less.

50 Best Winter Vacations in the U.S. and Canada

1. Alta, Utah

Why go: If you’re a diehard skier who hates sharing the slopes with snowboarders, Alta is your spot. The ski resort has banned snowboarding since the sport was invented, leaving all 2,200 acres of fresh, fluffy powder to you and your sticks. Every level is welcome, with 25 percent of the ski area available for beginners, 40 percent for intermediate skiers, and 35 percent for experts. Plus, Alta teamed up with Snowbird Ski Resort for access to double the terrain. Most importantly, it’s an easy, 40-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport, which means getting there from most major cities is easy breezy. Oh, and Utah’s Cottonwood Canyons are one of the snowiest places in the world.

Where to stay: Rebuilt a few years ago on its original 1941 site, the Snowpine Lodge offers 78 rooms with ski-in/ski-out access to the area’s 500 feet of pristine annual snowfall.

Whether you’re a single-digit handicapper or a weekend hacker, anyone can nab a tee time at these top-notch public access destinations. Consider this an anthology of resort courses, daily fee links, casino tracks, and munis from the Maine woods to the Arizona desert, the Oregon coastline to the Last Frontier.

Since this guide is broken down by state, every corner of these United States gets a turn at the podium. Some courses are high-priced Top 100s (ahem, TPC Sawgrass in Florida) that bucket-list golfers yearn to play once before they’re buried in a pot bunker à la Pete Dye. Others are up-and-coming hotbeds in less-visited states (Big Cedar Lodge in southwest Missouri comes to mind). Then, of course, there are the certified steals that you could make your home course and play over and over again (Circling Raven in Idaho, we’re looking at you).

We’re lucky to live in an era when tremendous public golfing options aren’t limited to any single destination—they’re everywhere. So kick back, grab a pen and piece of paper, and map out your next golf-centric adventure. Better yet, print out this best golf courses list and strive to play ‘em all someday. To Understand the Future of Fiji, You Must Look to Its Past

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 8:08 pm

Eight-six percent of the land is owned by indigenous peoples and while one of the national languages is Fijian, there are over 300 sub dialects across the chain of islands. Today the country is divided into 14 provinces, but historically it was split into 70 smaller territories, each run by a tribal chief. The majority of the population still relies on subsistence farming, mostly crops like sugarcane, cassava, potatoes, bananas, and rice.

Family is incredibly important to Fijians, but traditionally it’s based on spiritual ancestors, not biological lineage. Communities are close knit, with complex social structures. As a whole, Fiji is an amazingly friendly country. “Bula,” which you’ll hear everywhere, has many meanings—hello, good morning, good afternoon, and cheers, among others—embodies how warm the country often feels.

More recently, Fiji has become a tourist hot spot and a popular destination for scuba diving. PADI, the largest scuba diving association, calls it “the soft coral capital of the world” and the “best shark diving location in the world,” among other accolades. Tourism has helped the country grow rapidly, with fancy resorts, major infrastructure, and dollars flooding in, but it also poses risks to the environment.

Learning From the Past

Later in our kava ceremony, I asked the chief what he thought the future might look like. With help from our translator, he responded, saying “a balance of old wisdom and modern technologies.” As I would learn, this sentiment is shared among a growing number of Fijians, especially older generations. Together they’ve catalyzed a cultural renaissance, bringing traditional foods, arts, and skills back to life.

One harbinger of this renaissance is the Uto Ni Yalo, a traditional Fijian sailing canoe built in 2010. With the intent of promoting a sustainable and reciprocal relationship with the ocean, the canoe moves around the archipelago teaching traditional navigational skills, arts, and customs to local communities. To date, the 72-foot double-hulled vessel has sailed over 80,000 nautical miles of open ocean to 15 countries including to Australia, Hawaii, and New Zealand, using only the stars to navigate.

Airbnb Reveals Hottest New Travel Destinations of 2023

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 2:27 am

Recently, Airbnb released its findings on where travelers have been in 2022 and where they’re planning to go in 2023. At a time of year when it’s getting colder and darker in much of the U.S., Airbnb travelers were—and still are—looking for places that are warmer, sunnier, and wetter.

Where we’ve been

In 2022, the main consideration for Airbnb travelers—in addition to escaping the cold—seems to have been proximity to water. Among the top ten categories for Airbnb stays were Pool at number one followed by Beach (2), Beachfront (6), Surf Spot (8), and Lake House (9). Even frozen water got on the list with Ski Destination (10). The Iconic City category (3) also saw plenty of action.

Airbnb categories were originally created to help travelers find unique properties. The company’s latest ones include Top of the World, Trending, Adapted for Wheelchair Access, Play, and Hanoks (a traditional Korean house).

According to Airbnb, 2022 also saw an increase in extended stays at U.S. properties for foreign travelers—many of them coming from London, Toronto, Paris, Seoul, and Mexico City. And when they come, they’ve been staying awhile. During the last part of the year, the fastest growing trip length for foreign travelers has been stays of 28 nights or longer.

Where to next?

And now onto the budding Airbnb trends of 2023. The company has compiled a list of its top international travel destinations for the coming year. Much like domestic stays, warmth and water are factoring high again among travelers’ priorities. Here’s a top ten countdown of the places that people are planning to go according to Airbnb.

There are few whiskey distilleries as beloved as Buffalo Trace. If you were to ask rabid bourbon fans about the one whiskey distillery they’d most like to visit, you’ll hear a lot of drinkers shouting “Buffalo Trace” at the top of their lungs. It’s Tulip Season: Best Tulip Fields and Festivals in America

When we think of vivid tulip fields in spring, we conjure an image of the Netherlands, with picturesque windmills near the coast of the North Sea. Reasonably so, the country farms more than four billion annually as the world’s largest producer. But you don’t have to take a flight to Holland anytime in order to enjoy these magnificent harbingers of spring.

The U.S. has a number of tulip farms of their own, and some fantastic views to complement those colors. One of the most productive growing regions in the U.S. is in the Pacific Northwest. You’ll find it underneath the towering peaks of the Cascades. That’s not the only place, though. Through the Midwest, Great Lakes, and even along the Atlantic, tulips are a favorite springtime flower. In addition, their growing fields make for a remarkable destination worthy of a trip.

With colder days behind us, it’s time to hit the road, and enjoy the best tulip fields and festivals in America.

1. Mount Vernon, Washington

The sprawling tulip fields near the town of Mount Vernon are no secret. Each April more than a million people visit the area for the month-long Skagit Valley Tulip Festival to celebrate the ongoing bloom.

Nestled between the San Juan Islands and Salish Sea to the west, and less than 30 miles to the summit of Mt. Baker to the northeast, the Skagit Valley is settled into a dramatic landscape near the most northwestern corner of the Lower 48. Not only this, but the mild winters and summers of the maritime region of Washington have helped make Skagit County the largest single county producer of tulips in the US. Rows of spring tulips are backed by the chiseled profile of the northern Cascades, breaking from the dreary winter.

The trip to Mount Vernon is just an hour drive north of Seattle, or you can take Amtrak. Among the festive atmosphere, two farms dominate the actual tulip production: Roozengaarde and Tulip Town. Fields are rotated annually, so you’ll want the latest map to know which of the region’s fields are open to roam.

Book an Eco-Friendly Escape at America’s Top LEED-Certified Hotels

Let’s face it, the hotel biz isn’t exactly the most eco-friendly industry. Colossal properties and wasteful resorts tend to have a pretty hefty environmental footprint. But one easy way to plan a greener getaway is to start with your hotel booking. The lodging industry has seen a barrage of eco-friendly seals of approval and certification programs. However when it comes to green building rating systems, LEED-certified hotels reign supreme.

Chances are you’ve heard of LEED certification, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Developed by the United States Green Building Council, it’s become the most widely used green building rating system in the world. It essentially sets the global eco-standards for sustainable building practices and helps travelers see at a glance whether or not their hotel is an environmentally responsible choice.

To earn points, buildings are evaluated for meeting certain green criteria across various categories, such as sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. Based on the number of accrued points, a building is categorized into one of four tiers: LEED Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59 points), Gold (60-79 points), or Platinum (80-100 points).

The program’s popularity has snowballed with architects, property developers, and even the general public since its creation in 1993. With Earth Day approaching, here’s a look at some of the most impressive LEED-certified hotels across the country. Read on to learn how these eco-friendly escapes get creative with their design, programming, and practices.

1. Proximity Hotel: Greensboro, NC

The city of Greensboro became even greener when Proximity Hotel opened its doors in 2007. When it comes to the sustainable lodging movement, this 147-room luxury boutique property is a bona fide trailblazer. It made history by becoming the first hotel in the nation to achieve a LEED Platinum rating. Even better, the adjacent Print Works Bistro also received the top level of certification. More than 70 intentionally sustainable practices were implemented during the planning and construction phases. Roughly 87 percent of construction debris was recycled, diverting more than 1,500 tons of waste from landfills. Most of the furniture was crafted within 18 miles of the hotel, and an artist-in-residence created 500 original pieces from a temporary on-site studio, which eliminated packaging and shipping materials. The 4,000-square-foot rooftop is covered by 100 solar panels, which heat the majority of water used in the hotel and restaurant. Groundbreaking technology also played a part. Newly engineered variable-speed hoods in the restaurant enable smarter energy savings, and efficient new elevator models can capture energy and feed it back into the hotel’s electrical grid. Overall, the hotel uses 41 percent less energy than a comparable hotel, and water usage has been cut by a whopping 33 percent.
