Hampton Morris (61KG) Sets Junior World Record with 168-Kilogram (370.4-Pound) Clean & Jerk at 2023 World Weightlifting Championships

Morris also broke a streak that lasted more than 50 years.

19-year old Hampton Morris has already made a name for himself as an Olympic weightlifter competing for Team USA. The young strength athlete has been a mainstay of the 61-kilogram (134.5-pound) Mens Junior division for the past two years, racking up gold medals on an international stage. His latest competitive appearance was no different.

On Sept. 6, at the 2023 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Weightlifting Championships held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Morris set a Junior World Record performing a 168-kilogram (370.4-pound) clean & jerk. This earned him a gold medal in the event which, to make the feat even more spectacular, is the first time since 1972 that an American Mens competitor has earned gold in the clean & jerk at this prestigious competition.

More from Breaking Muscle:

This accomplishment wasn’t Morris first claim to a record-setting clean & jerk. He first captured the Junior World Record in 2022 and has pushed it even higher on three occasions.

Hampton Morris (61KG) | Clean & Jerk Record Progression

  • 160 kilograms (352.7 pounds) — 2022 IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships
  • 162 kilograms (357.1 pounds) — 2022 IWF Pan-American Championships
  • 163 kilograms (359.3 pounds) — 2022 Pan American Junior Weightlifting Championships
  • 168 kilograms (370.4 pounds) — 2023 IWF World Weightlifting Championships

Morris broke his own records with two of those lifts (162 kilograms and 163 kilograms) while besting his peers to set both his initial record and the most recent. In August 2023, Morris was successfully completed an even heavier lift — 175 kilograms (385.8 pounds) — during a training session, though his body weight at the time was unclear.

More from Breaking Muscle:

Unfortunately, Morris’ overall performance at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships was less than ideal. His first clean & jerk attempt was a relatively comfortable opening weight of 163 kilograms (359.3 pounds). He then earned a red light by failing his second lift (168 kilograms/370.4 pounds). Morris was able to rally by locking out 168 kilograms (370.4 pounds) to secure the event win, gold medal, and Junior World Record.

Prior to the clean & jerk, he was unable to successfully complete any of his 123-kilogram (271.2-pound) snatch attempts and was subsequently unable to post a total for the comptition.

The IWF World Weightlifting Championships continue taking place from Sept. 4-17, which serves as a qualification event leading up to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Without posting a total on the leaderboard of the World Weightlifting Championships, Morris’s participation in the Summer Games is not yet decided.

9-Year-Old Rory van Ulft Logs a Staggering 66-Kilogram (145.5-Pound) Clean & Jerk

Van Ulft becomes the youngest person to clean & jerk double their bodyweight in competition.

In some ways, Canadian athlete Rory van Ulft might be one of the strongest competitors for her age that weightlifting and powerlifting have seen in some time. At just 9 years old, van Ulft has developed a reputation, particularly with her deadlift, for having impeccable pulling power and an “iron will” with a barbell in her hands (literally and figuratively). The athlete’s latest official addition to her weightlifting rap sheet, featuring a noteworthy overhead lift, might be another entry in the growing lore of her budding career.

On Jan. 21, 2023, van Ulft captured a 66-kilogram (145.5-pound) clean & jerk during the 2023 Variety Village Open in Toronto, Canada. According to the caption in a video of the feat from van Ulft’s Instagram, facilitated by a parent/manager, van Ulft had a body weight of 32.8 kilograms (72.4 pounds) on contest day. In turn, that makes van Ulft the youngest person ever, regardless of gender, to successfully finish a clean & jerk that was double their body weight during a sanctioned competition. Not to be outdone, a final total of 254.39 Sinclair — the International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF) primary tool for contextualizing an athlete’s strength by weight class — van Ulft officially notched the best-ever performance by a 40-kilogram female competitor.

More from Breaking Muscle:

A mind-bending achievement for someone of her young age aside, van Ulft’s clean & jerk wasn’t her only major accomplishment from the Toronto contest. Per the same Instagram caption, the athlete broke six Canadian provincial 15U and 17U records on previous lifts during the competition. The final double-body weight clean & jerk appeared to act more like gravy layered over an already prolific day for the youthful elite competitor.

The parent/manager of van Ulft’s Instagram credited a few people for training van Ulft to enjoy such a productive day while simultaneously making history. They included the athlete’s coach, Spencer Moorman, who can be seen in the background of the clip of van Ulft’s milestone encouraging the lifter. Others receiving praise included trainers like “Cierra” (last name undisclosed) and the CANAM Strength and Conditioning team from van Ulft’s native Ottawa, Canada. The Ontario Weightlifting Association (ONWA) also earned a shoutout.

“An enormous thank you to Coach [Moorman] (who deserves to win Coach of the Year in at least one country for this!), [Cierra], and the entire [CANAM Strength and Conditioning] team for their incredible support at this event, as well as to the [Ontario Weightlifting Association] for putting on such a fun and welcoming event!”

For context on an American scale regarding van Ulft’s new achievements and results, the athlete’s 66-kilogram (145.5-pound) clean & jerk is eight kilograms (17.6 pounds) more than the USA Weighlifting (USAW) Youth Women’s record for the 40-kilogram weight class. Kendra Hoover holds the mark with a clean & jerk of 58 kilograms (127.8 pounds). However, Hoover notched her lift when she was 12, roughly three years older than van Ulft.

More from Breaking Muscle:

The year 2023 has only just begun, and van Ulft is already acting as a lifting pioneer for her age group and beyond. If this is how the athlete starts a fresh new calendar, time will only tell as to what other sparkling heights she might achieve through the ensuing 11 months.

Weightlifter Loredana Elena Toma (71KG) Captures 119-Kilogram World Record Snatch En Route to World Championship

In a different weight class, Toma captured her second career World championship.

As a weightlifter, Loredana Elena Toma isn’t known to mess around. In 2017, the Romanian competitor officially burst on the international scene when she captured the Senior 63-kilogram World title at the 2017 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Weightlifting Championships. Years later, with more training, seasoning, and strength under her belt, Toma is still chugging along as a powerhouse.

On Dec. 12, 2022, Toma successfully notched a 119-kilogram (262.3-pound) snatch. The feat in Bogotá, Colombia, set a Senior World Record for the 71-kilogram division, helped Toma win the 71-kilogram World championship, and is five kilograms more than Toma’s previous all-time personal record of 114 kilograms (251.3 pounds). She captured that mark at the 2021 European Weightlifting Championships (EWC).

More from Breaking Muscle:

With the 71-kilogram weight class relatively new to the international stage, Toma’s World Record snatch also set a precedent for the previously untouched World Standard. The said snatch World Standard mark of 117 kilograms (257.9 pounds) stood for four years without being claimed before Toma eclipsed it at the 2022 IWF Worlds. The IWF established the World Standard on lifts for competitive weight classes when the organizing body reorganized its divisions in 2018.

On her clean & jerk, Toma was able to lock out 137 kilograms (302 pounds) to give herself her 256-kilogram (564.4-pound) World title-winning total. Here’s a quick rundown of Toma’s individual performance at the 2022 IWF World Weightlifting Championships:

Loredana Elena Toma | 2022 IWF World Weightlifting Championships Top Stats

  • Clean & Jerk — 137 kilograms (302 pounds)
  • Snatch — 119 kilograms (262.3 pounds)
  • Total — 256 kilograms (564.4 pounds)

While Toma’s World Record snatch mark and World title are undoubtedly the primary highlights of the 71-kilogram weight class’ output at the 2022 IWF Worlds, it wasn’t the only notable figure or performance. For example, fifth-place finisher/American weightlifter Olivia Reeves took home a clean & jerk bronze medal of 139 kilograms (306.4 pounds).

For further context on a macro scale, 104 kilograms (229.3 pounds) was enough for a gold medal on the snatch at the 2021 WWC. At the 2022 edition of the WWC, nine of the participating 71-kilogram Women’s athletes snatched more than 104 kilograms. Meanwhile, 135 kilograms was enough for the clean & jerk gold meal at the 2021 WWC. In 2022, six of the featured competitors clean & jerked more than 135 kilograms.

Here’s an overview of the Women’s 71-kilogram podium at the 2022 IWF World Weightlifting Championships:

IWF World Weightlifting Championships | Women’s 71-Kilogram Podium

  • First place — Loredana Elena Toma (Romania): 256-kilogram total | 119-kilogram (262.3-pound) Senior World Record snatch | 137-kilogram (302-pound) clean & jerk
  • Second place — Zeng Tiantian (China): 253-kilogram total | 113-kilogram (241.1-pound) snatch | 140-kilogram (308.6-pound) clean & jerk
  • Third place — Angie Palacios Dajomes (Ecuador): 252-kilogram total | 116-kilogram (255.7-pound) snatch | 136-kilogram (299.8-pound) clean & jerk

More from Breaking Muscle:

With a new World Record and another World title to her name in a different division, Toma could theoretically stop lifting heavy barbells overhead immediately and still be remembered as a great. Instead, something says that the superstar may write another illustrious chapter of her career in 2023.

From Coach to Student of Physical Therapy

As a coach or personal trainer, you are limited by your knowledge and skillset. Therefore, certifications are suitable; however, one could become too heavy-handed and lose sight of their focus.

The purpose of this article is to give insight into why I chose to go into physical therapy in contrast to obtaining more certifications

IOC Confirms First Transgender Olympian Will Be Laurel Hubbard

43-year-old Laurel Hubbard will be the first transgender competitor at an Olympics this summer in Tokyo. The New Zealander will get to compete in the superheavyweight category in weightlifting despite the storm of controversy that preceded her getting this opportunity.

While there were various groups, and fellow competitors, who had criticized Hubbard’s inclusion, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and fellow competitors like Team GB’s Emily Campbell, have shown their support and pointed out that Hubbard has abided by the rules in place and competed fairly. Hubbard transitioned in 2013 but had competed in men’s events prior.

Tapping Into the Power of Identity Is the Secret to Sustainable Fitness

My dad began waking up my older brother and me a few days a week to practice karate and lift weights in the basement in elementary school. While I wouldn’t recommend starting eight-year-olds on weights, these experiences had a lasting impact on me.

I’ll never forget my father bragging to other adults about how much I could lift. This bragging became a point of pride that stoked my confidence and gave me an identity that I wanted to keep.
