Aussie Sam Kerr is being recognised for the generational talent she is after she caught fire in Chelsea’s outrageous 6-0 win over Bristol in the Women’s League Cup final.

Kerr scored her hat-trick in 48 minutes and was hailed by Chelsea boss Emma Hayes as “unbelievable”.

The emphatic title defence demolished records with Kerr becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in the final of the competition in a result that was the most one-sided win ever seen in a Women’s League Cup final.

Kerr had her first goal in 90 seconds before a second in the 10th minute and a third in the 48th minute.

She celebrated her second goal with an acrobatic backflip caught on camera.

Kerr’s classy finishes came on the back of some sweet assists from teammate Fran Kirby, who set up four of the team’s goals.

Kerr was unstoppable in the win, but her heroics were partly overshadowed by Kirby’s performance in their one-two knockout punch against the Bristol defence.

“We were unbelievable for 60 minutes, the pace, intensity and movement. It was a great team performance across the board. Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr were unbelievable,” Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said.

“It was a performance of a team that were very confident in what they were doing and I really enjoyed it. We could have scored more than we did. We were exceptional going forward.”

Kerr also tried to give Kirby the spotlight when interviewed after the game.

“It was a massive team performance today,” she said.

“Every game, we’re getting more cohesive. Emma put up on the board today the number of trophies we can win, it’s important to get this one ticked off.

“Fran is easy to play with, I can trust her on the ball.”
