The Best Dog Harnesses for Outdoor Adventures

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 10:26 pm

In the past, harnesses were for sled dogs or service dogs—and not much else. Now that we have a better understanding of how dog harnesses can protect your pup’s neck and give you more control, they have become a popular choice for both urban and adventure dogs alike. I own a few different harnesses for each of my three pups, and I much prefer them to a collar in most situations.

Why Use Dog Harnesses?

A lot has changed in tandem with the positive reinforcement movement in dog training, and naturally some of the negative punishment tactics of the past have gone away. This means fewer choke or prong collars and an emphasis on more gentle control through the use of harnesses. Dog harnesses more evenly distribute pressure created by a leash, and they help you avoid placing force directly on your dog’s throat and neck.

Dogs prone to tracheal collapse (typically smaller breeds) should use a harness. My smallest dog, Murphy, is about 20 pounds, and he turns into a hacking mess if I try to use a collar on him. Instead, a dog harness helps me safely control his little-man energy. And for my bigger pups Benny and Rio (85 and 50 pounds, respectively), I opt for harnesses over collars because they feel more stable when I need to redirect their strength, especially when running. Plus, I love harnesses on hikes because they make it easier to pick up my dogs and help them navigate through difficult terrain.

You might also use a dog harness for dog sports or other special circumstances. Sports like skijoring and canicross utilize a harness so that your pup can safely pull someone behind them. In addition, some harnesses can be used as a car restraint and are tested to protect your dog in the case of an accident. Not to mention, many dog backpacks have integrated harnesses so that your pup can carry their own water or supplies when hiking.

How to Choose a Dog Harness

I suggest considering the breed, size, and behavior of your dog when choosing a harness. Because I have three dogs who are vastly different in shape and size, finding a single perfect option for all of them isn’t realistic. A lot of my recommendations are great for most dogs, but certain breeds or temperaments may require a more specialized harness.

To get an idea of what your dog needs, grab a string and gently wrap it around your dog’s chest/shoulders, neck, and stomach/shoulders—roughly corresponding to the places a harness’s straps will go. Then stretch the string along a tape measure to get an accurate fitment.

Is your pooch a puller? If so, definitely prioritize something designed to curb that behavior, or at the very least one with a front leash attachment point to help redirect their energy. The first time I hooked a leash to Benny’s front attachment point, I was amazed at how much it helped. Ease of use and durability are also important. Harnesses made with cheap materials or confusing designs are often more hassle than they’re worth.

Because everybody’s pup is different, I have included dog harnesses for a variety of situations, breeds, and sizes in this guide. As someone who used to walk dogs as a side hustle, I highly recommend all dog owners have at least one dog harness for general use. Many of these choices have a front and back attachment point because I love the versatility that each can provide. Read on to learn about the best dog harnesses below.

Feeling bloated, hungry or bored after salad? These tips might help

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 11:11 pm

Salads are great for our health.

They are nutritious, packed full of gut-loving fibre, micronutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

However, some people can experience certain downsides to eating salad after salad, including feeling bored, bloated or even still hungry.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your salad-eating habits as the weather warms up.

READ MORE: Dietitian Susie Burrell explains what your food cravings could mean

Salad

Keep yourself fuller for longer

Salads are naturally low in calories or kilojoules. This is because salads mostly contain vegetables, which have a high water content.

This may mean you don’t feel very satisfied after eating your salad – making it hard to stay full until your next meal.

Instead of eating a salad and then later reaching for something less healthy to fill up on, you can stay fuller for longer by including all three macronutrients in your salad:

  1. a healthy carbohydrate source (pumpkin, sweet potato, parsnips, taro, brown rice, quinoa, barley or brown pasta)
  2. a healthy fat source (avocado, olive oil, toasted seeds or nuts)
  3. a lean protein source (eggs, fish, chicken, tofu, tempeh, lentils or legumes).

Reduce bloating

Many people experience bloating and/or gut upset when they eat a lot of salad.

This commonly occurs if someone is going quickly from a less healthy, low-fibre diet to a healthier, high-fibre diet.

It happens because your gut microbes are multiplying and producing lots of plant-digesting enzymes (which is great for your gut health!).

However, your gut needs some time to adapt and adjust over time. You can help alleviate any discomfort by:

  1. Taking a short walk or doing some stretching after eating your salad. This has been shown to reduce bloating as it loosens up the gut muscles and helps release any trapped gas
  2. Being mindful of how you are preparing lentils and legumes. Ensure they are thoroughly rinsed and only include ¼ cup of them (soaked) to begin with if they are something new in your diet
  3. Eating your salad mindfully. A non-relaxed, uptight gut or a gut that has recently been irritated by an illness can mean your gut is not as efficient in absorbing gas. This can trigger bloating as the gas gets “trapped”
  4. Cooking some of the vegetables in your salad. Applying temperature or heat to your vegetables can help break them down and make them easier to digest
  5. Considering your symptoms. If you experience extreme abdominal pain, irregular bowel habits (including chronic diarrhoea or constipation, or alternating diarrhoea and constipation) and a bloated stomach after eating salad it may indicate you are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Please see an accredited practising dietitian who can make an assessment and diagnose IBS, help you identify your triggers and manage your symptoms
  6. Being mindful of your current health conditions or treatments. For example, if you are undergoing chemotherapy treatment, some drugs can slow down your digestion. This may mean some vegetables and other high-fibre foods in your salad upset your gut. Again, speaking with an accredited practising dietitian is the best way to receive evidence-based advice on how to manage this.

Keep salad boredom at bay

Stuck on what makes a good salad? Here’s Lauren’s tried and tested formula, based on six categories of ingredients:

  1. Leaves, such as lettuce, rocket or spinach
  2. Something sweet and juicy, such as tomato, pear, mango, peach or whatever is in season
  3. Something with crunch, such as carrot, capsicum or broccolini
  4. A type of nut, such as cashew or macadamia
  5. A cheese, such as feta, bocconcini, mature cheddar, parmesan, edam
  6. Something fragrant, such as mint, parsley, basil or coriander.

To make the salad into a complete meal, add a healthy carbohydrate, fat and protein source (the three macronutrients we mentioned earlier).

The bottom line? Eating salads is a great way to have a healthy, diverse diet. With these tweaks, you can make the most of the summer weather ahead!

The Best Smokeless Fire Pits of 2022

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 10:31 pm

Few things get me jazzed up like bonfire season. Chilly fall nights hold powerful nostalgia: football games, holidays, hunting, good food, and warm clothes. Growing up in Wisconsin meant that friends and family often gathered around a crackling fire on the weekend to roast s’mores and doughboys (the superior treat, trust me). A lot has changed since then, but as far as fire pit technology goes, that’s not a bad thing at all.

What Is a Smokeless Fire Pit

One of the drawbacks of back-in-the-day bonfire nights was the smoky smell on all your clothes the next day. Or constantly shifting your seat around the fire to avoid the swirling smoke. Smokeless fire pits (mostly) solve these problems.

If you’re burning wood, there will always be some smoke due to the evaporation of components like water and hydrocarbons within the wood. But smokeless pits aim to eliminate as much smoke as possible by reburning that initial output. There are different ways to achieve this reduced-smoke effect, but most common smokeless fire pits utilize a double-walled design with carefully located air holes. The holes create a hot upward flow of oxygen that burns the particulates that typically form smoke.

Why Go Smokeless

At first I was a smokeless skeptic. Though the idea sounded cool, the steeper cost and the fact that I had no real problem with a normal fire pit made me feel as if they weren’t worth it. But I’m big enough to admit I was wrong: Now I love these smokeless fire pits and will shout from the rooftops to skip any cheaper traditional patio option.

Smokeless fire pits burn clean, hot, and fast. And what little smoke is produced usually moves straight upward due to the reburn design. Some folks complain that the double wall generates less radiant heat than traditional fires. I’ve found that to be a non-issue because I can sit much closer to a smokeless fire pit (and therefore get more heat) without getting smoke in my face.

The only real drawback I have experienced is that I go through firewood more quickly with smokeless fire pits. But it’s totally worth it: Instead of a log smoking and smoldering in the corner, each log is burned down into hot, even coals, which are great for cooking.

Want to make the switch? Check out these 10 smokeless fire pits that suit a variety of budgets and needs.

Nick Walker Weighs 277 Pounds As He Nears Final Steps of 2022 Olympia Prep

The superstar is entering the last stages of his Olympia training.

Nick Walker knows it’ll be a tall order to capture his first Mr. Olympia title this December. In fact, the bodybuilder has said as much in public, calling the 2022 Mr. Olympia “the Olympia of all Olympias” in mid-October of the same year. Such a reality means this superstar will likely have to bring his best to the table to come out on top. That doesn’t appear to be a concern.

On Nov. 1, 2022, Walker shared a physique update on his Instagram, roughly six weeks before he’ll step onto the Olympia stage for the second time in his career. Per the caption of his post, after a morning fast, the bodybuilder weighs a stacked 277 pounds after in the jaw-dropping picture. It’s a stark and impressive drop from his reported weight of 295 pounds in early June 2022.

Walker’s latest stunning reveal of the fruits of his labor should probably be no surprise based on an eventful fall in the spotlight.

In a mid-August 2022 podcast appearance on the Fouad Abiad Media YouTube channel, Walker didn’t shy away from aiming for the top. When asked to break down his peer in two-time reigning Mr. Olympia Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay, Walker said that if the Egyptian titan comes in running on full cylinders, “he’s probably going to win again.”

At the same time, Walker — who finished in fifth place in one of the more stunning rookie Olympia results in 2021 — left the door open to snatching bodybuilding glory from the jaws of high expectations. Walker alluded to a potential position where, if Elssbiay doesn’t come in at his best, he might be vulnerable. In that special case, Walker asserted that it would be a “good battle” between the two.

Later, while in a reflective mood during a late October 2022 appearance on the Real Talk With Ares podcast on YouTube, Walker discussed his future as one of bodybuilding’s more prominent names. After diagramming the upcoming loaded Olympia and its host of formidable characters like Derek Lunsford, Hadi Choopan, and Samson Dauda, Walker didn’t mince his words.

He wants to be one of the most accomplished bodybuilders of all time.

“At this point in my career, I don’t want to compete all year long,” Walker said. “I want to do the top two big shows … Then, when I’m ready to call it for my career, I’m ready. But I want to do it on my terms. If I win one Olympia and two Arnolds (Classic), that’s going to be remembered forever.”

There’s still time for Walker to continue refining his ideal physique for his second Olympia appearance. Given his demonstrated actions and words, it would probably be fair to see this young dynamo throw the kitchen sink at a gauntlet of a contest.

The 2022 Mr. Olympia will take place on Dec. 16-18, 2022, in Las Vegas, NV.

The Best Men’s Hoodies of 2022

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 8:45 pm

Nothing embodies a “don’t sweat it” swagger like an easy-wearing hoodie. Created in the 1930s by athletic brand Champion, the hoodie spent its first few decades mostly relegated to chilly warehouses and fish markets, where workers needed a loose-fitting sweater with a fabric hood (instead of a hat) to beat the frigid temperatures of their workplaces. As with many other menswear staples with utilitarian origins, hoodies have evolved into a common men’s wardrobe piece. They’re the ultimate high-low garment, seen everywhere from high-fashion events on the runway to the bleachers at high school football games.

Anatomy of a Hoodie

What makes a hoodie a hoodie? Simply put, it’s a long-sleeve sweater with an attached hood. From there, a hoodie can take on different forms (though we’ll stop short of calling a hooded bathrobe a hoodie). Hoodies can zip up at the front, but they’re usually designed as a pullover, often with a front kangaroo pocket for warming your hands. Do a quick search for hoodies, and you’ll find them in every fabric imaginable: warm cotton fleece, sweat-wicking polyester blends, sumptuous baby alpaca, and even supple lambskin leather.

How to Wear a Hoodie

How should you style a hoodie to not look like a slob with a Sunday morning hangover? As with any other garment, fit is key. Avoid buying a hoodie that’s so oversized it hangs below your butt or bunches up in the sleeves. Another tip to dressing up a hoodie is choosing a finer fabric like cashmere or wool. These fabrics look effortlessly cool while also keeping you more toasty than your worn-out cotton sweats.

Lastly, consider layering a jacket over your hoodie. Depending on the time of year, a sophisticated knee-length topcoat, vintage denim jacket, or leather moto will give your hoodie look a serious boost. Pair that with suede Chelseas or leather military boots, and you’re good to go.

Ready to shop? Below, we’ve rounded up our favorite hoodies of the season.

Disgusting reasons you should stop biting your nails

Filed under: Fitness — Tags: — admin @ 1:11 am

Yes, yes, we all know nail biting is a particularly bad habit. But did you know there are genuine health reasons why you should stop?

If gnawing on your nails is a regular (or unconscious) occurrence for you, then a video recently shared on social media might leave your stomach churning.

The viral clip shared by TikToker @kurlyheadbriii shares footage of nail clippings being viewed under a microscope. And what appears might just be grim enough to get you to kick the habit.

Nail biting can lead to some pretty nasty problems. (iStock)

The nails don’t look particularly pleasant close up, but it gets even worse when right at the end you get a close-up of what appears to be a tiny bug crawling over the surface.

“Not me biting my nails while watching this,” one person commented on the video, which clearly left plenty of others shocked.

“If I can’t see it it’s not there,” another said, while another quipped: “Extra protein.”

“I am really going to try not to,” another person promised.

Studies have revealed that our nails are not only housing germs, but they’re even creating them. Although your hands may feel cold and dry, your nail beds are actually warm and moist.

Videos show disgusting reasons you should stop biting your nails
One clip showed a bug crawling over the clipped nail. (TikTok)

Which is where the bugs can come in, according to Dr. Carl Edwards. “Bugs that live in the gut for example are designed to survive in a warm wet environment, such as under fingernails,” he told Bustle.

Of course, as some people pointed out ’not everyone’s nail is going to look like that’ – but you’ve been warned.

Aside from bugs, you also put yourself at risk of nasty infections, as fellow TikToker @pdotz, shared in a previous video.

“Inside your mouth you carry good bacteria and some bad bacteria. When you’re biting your nails, obviously you use your teeth which is inside your mouth.

“This has some bad bacteria inside of it, which can lead to your nails getting infected.

“When your nails actually grow back they can grow back the wrong way, and then grow into your skin and then create pus.”

You can watch the videos above. (If you dare)

Another TikToker warned of the bad infections you can get if you chew your nails. (TikTok)

Michael Shapiro, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Vanguard Dermatology in New York City recently told Shape nail biters are particularly susceptible to paronychia, a skin infection that occurs around your nails.

“Your fingernails are almost twice as dirty as your fingers. Bacteria often gets stuck under the nails, and can then be transferred to the mouth, causing infections of the gums and throat,” he said.

Sean Hayes Axle Deadlifts 1,045 Pounds, Sets Canadian Record

Hayes’ new Canadian record didn’t come without a cost.

Sean Hayes has developed a reputation for impeccable strength when it comes to deadlifts of all variations. The athlete can now add another achievement to his running laundry list.

On October 30, 2022, Hayes shared an Instagram clip of himself capturing an Axle Deadlift of 474 kilograms (1,045 pounds) during a training session. According to the caption of his post, Hayes’ pull is a new Canadian record, breaking his own mark. Hayes wore a lifting suit and a lifting belt and utilized lifting straps to help him with his feat.

[Related: The 12 Best Hamstring Exercises for Muscle Mass, Strength, and More]

In his Instagram post, Hayes wrote that he initially had loftier ambitions with this Axle Deadlift. Hayes had planned to surpass Mexican strongman Gabriel Peña’s World Record Axle Deadlift of 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds) from the 2021 Static Monsters Worldwide (SMW) contest.

(Note: Strongmen such as former World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champions like Eddie Hall and Hafthor Björnsson have deadlifted at least 500 kilograms, but Peña is the only athlete to do it on the Axle deadlift variation, which uses a stiffer, thicker bar and is pulled from 18-inches off the floor.)

Unfortunately for Hayes, even with the extension of his Canadian record, his attempt to exceed Peña came at a health cost.

“[The] goal on the day was [Gabriel Peña’s] World Record, loaded up 500.5 kilograms/1,103 pounds,” Hayes wrote. “The strength was there for it, but the body was not. My left sacroiliac joint popped out badly. I couldn’t walk for 30 minutes …bad-bad back injury. [I’m] gonna see how I wake up, but it’s rough.”

At the time of this writing, there is no further word on Hayes’ injury. At least, for his sake, he didn’t leave the session empty-handed without a record.

[Related: The 12 Best Kettlebell Exercises for Conditioning, Mobility, and Strength]

It’s been an eventful 2022 for Hayes.

According to Strongman Archives, the athlete took home respective fourth-place results at the 2022 Canada’s Strongest Man (CSM) and the 2022 Shaw Classic (Open portion). In early April 2022, he was in temporary possession of the Silver Dollar deadlift World Record with a pull of 560 kilograms (1,235 pounds) from the 2022 Strongman Corporation Canada King & Queen Of The Throne. (Note: Rauno Heinla is the current record holder with a Silver Dollar pull of 579.7 Kilograms (1,278 Pounds) at the 2022 Silver Dollar Deadlift Estonian Championship.)

Hayes hasn’t alluded to his upcoming plans. Based on his recent precedent, it’ll likely be a milestone or competitive result worth writing home about.

Rest days are essential to your fitness journey. Here’s why. – FIU News

Filed under: Fitness — admin @ 7:03 pm

By Angeliki Mavrantza

Rest is a fundamental element of a successful fitness journey because it is essential for performance. But it’s often overlooked.

Resting doesn’t mean leading a completely sedentary lifestyle on off days. This is known as passive recovery, and it’s only recommended when dealing with a lot of pain or an injury. Rest is about listening to your body and responding to its needs. On regular rest days, try to focus on active recovery: resting from your regular training, but still remaining active throughout the day.

Why is recovery so important after a workout? Research shows that when engaging in any type of intense exercise, the working muscles start to break down, causing microtears in the muscle fibers. By giving your body a break with an active recovery day, the microtears begin to rebuild, and the feeling of soreness and pain will decrease. If your body doesn’t get the break it needs, the microtears won’t have the chance to heal, which can result in overtraining and can increase the likelihood of an injury.

Here are some ways to ensure that you are resting and recovering properly:

  1. Get sleep. Having good sleeping habits is essential for recovery. While you’re on your fitness journey, try to stay rested and sleep seven to eight hours each day.
  2. Stretch it out. Use your rest days to stretch, and challenge yourself with dynamic stretches. Remember that stretching can also have a positive effect on your training days.
  3. Go for a walk. Use your rest day to recharge. Take a walk outside, maybe with your friends or your dog, or even while listening to your favorite podcast. Walking will help you stay on top of your active recovery – and it can also help you alleviate mental stress.
  4. Try something new. Try new activities outside of your regular training sessions, such as yoga or Pilates. You can also use your rest days for new experiences with friends. Hiking, kayaking or even dancing are just some of the ways you can let your body rest while actively recovering and having fun!
  5. Treat yourself to a massage. It can help you relax physically, but it can also serve as mental relaxation time to reset before you go back into your training routine.
  6. Above all: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!

Making rest a priority during your fitness journey can have a significant effect on your overall experience with exercise. You’ll feel better physically and mentally, and it can improve your overall training performance. Resting is the key to staying consistent and enjoying your workouts!
