Entrepreneur John Keats has known fitness queen Michelle Bridges since the late 1990s, when she roared into Sydney in a Sportsgirl Barina with everything she owned in the boot and began working at a gym near his car dealership. He has watched her become a millionaire and a mother; fall in love and have her heart broken; and become a titan of Australian fitness before weathering the public disgrace of being caught drink-driving with her then four-year-old son Axel in the back seat.

These days, Keats, who owns a chain of Pilates studios, lives on a farm near Bridges’ property in the NSW Southern Highlands with his wife Louise. The dapper, salt-and-pepper 50-something is Bridges’ training buddy, snake-catcher and self-appointed matchmaker. After Bridges’ messy split from her most recent partner, ex-army trainer Steve “Commando” Willis, Keats wants her to find someone uncomplicated, funny and easygoing; the type who’ll bring her a cup of tea in the morning. A country bloke, perhaps. “Someone who will love her for exactly who she is,” he says. He doesn’t even need to be muscular: “A lot of guys would feel intimidated, and think, ‘I’m not fit enough, I’ve got a bit of a pot belly,’ ” says Keats. “It might have been higher on her list once upon a time, but not any more. A decent human. Someone who knows the difference between right and wrong.”

Suitors may need to adjust their perception of Bridges, too, if they still think of her as the ambitious, unyielding amazon who exhorted hundreds of thousands of Australian women to stop making excuses and kick those kilos to the kerb. Bridges, once a familiar face in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Potts Point, now lives on four hectares with Axel and Banjo, a badly behaved cavoodle. Recently, Banjo bolted out the gate and Bridges, in gumboots and a dressing gown, had to run down the road hurling chunks of chicken to get him to stop. She fixes the ride-on mower, battles with her dangerously old oven, and goes to bed in a cardigan and beanie during winter because her farmhouse is so cold. She’s a single mum who does school pick-up, coaches the under-6s and spends hours playing with her son on the floor.

Brand Bridges lives on, as does her online fitness program, the 12 Week Body Transformation (12WBT). But the world has changed, and so has she. Gone is the frenetic pace; the drive to push further, harder, faster. Gone, too, thanks to the drink-driving conviction, is the sense that Bridges is any less flawed than the rest of us. She built her empire on the message that we can overcome the challenges in our lives by squaring up to them, then faced a relationship break-up so humiliating and public shame so devastating that even her remarkable willpower could not vanquish them.

“To be honest, it was the hardest time of my life, ever, leading up to what happened. I felt like I was in a fog,” she says. “I felt very alone.” She was broken. She remains bruised. But Michelle Bridges is bouncing back.

We’re sitting in the conference room at 12WBT’s utilitarian office in Surry Hills, in inner Sydney, talking about Bridges’ childhood. Her voice sounds like a pack-a-day smoker’s, thanks to years of shouting over music while straining to lift weights, and her eyes are a striking pale blue. She is 50 but doesn’t look it. Her hair is pulled back, and there are gold chains around her neck, a gold bracelet around her wrist and a gold ring on her pinky. She is wearing jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt, and tall black boots – a simple, tasteful outfit, but not high fashion.

“Oh my god, she’s such a dag,” says her long-time friend, fellow trainer Sean Simpson. “She’s definitely not flashy. She’s done all the red carpets and that kind of stuff, but she’s a dag.”

Bridges was born in Newcastle, a couple of hours north of Sydney. Her electrician father broke up with her mother, Maureen, when she was four, and her relationship with him never recovered. “Sometimes I think, ‘What would it be like to have a dad?’ But it doesn’t really matter.” As a teenager she saw her mother crying during a phone call to him, took the handset and told him to piss off. She’s seen him at family funerals; there have been a few emails, but “overall, we’ve all just decided we’re living our lives, and I’ve made peace with that”.

The 1970s were tough for single mothers. Maureen Bridges (now Partridge) paid a neighbour to take care of her two daughters after school while she worked as a secretary, but had no back-up if the girls were sick, and would have to leave them alone. “My heart goes out to her,” says Bridges. “My life – by design – has been completely manufactured the opposite way. I had all of my career, I had a child quite late in life, and now I am able to spend more time with him because I did the hard yards in the early years.”

Bridges attended five schools in 13 years, including one to the east at Nelson Bay and another to the north-west in Tamworth, and was rebuffed as an outsider at most of them. “I had a girl slap me across the face. I had food thrown at me. I had my school bag trashed twice. I remember my mum crying because we didn’t have any money, and she’s having to repair an entire school bag because everything’s been trashed inside it.” Bridges mastered the brave face that has served her well during the tabloid frenzies of her adult life. ” ‘Don’t let them see you cry. Don’t let them see you get emotional, don’t let them see any of it’,” she remembers telling herself. “Internally, I was in a lot of pain, but I could just shut it down. So in some parts of your life that’s a good thing to have, but probably not that healthy.”

Sport was Bridges’ escape; it still is. She loved the discipline, the competition and the camaraderie. “It was my rock, my place of solace,” she says. At school, she ran aerobics classes for the students who wanted to avoid competitive sport, then expanded her enterprise to the local squash courts. “You’d never get away with it now, a 14-year-old loose on the general public,” she says.

When Bridges left school, bound for years of service as a teller at the Greater Newcastle Building Society, she popped into a Taree nightclub to inquire about a part-time job. Under the pretext of showing her around, the man led her to a dimly lit bar. Something felt wrong and she tried to leave, but he pushed her against the bar and began tearing at her clothes. Bridges fought him off and ran to the door, only to discover it was locked. He set upon her again, and again she fought until the door gave way and she was able to flee – straight to the police station. The police pressed charges, the case went to court, and the man was sentenced to a year in prison.

“ ‘Don’t let them see you cry. Don’t let them see you get emotional, don’t let them see any of it.’ Internally, I was in a lot of pain.”

She began seeing a therapist but couldn’t afford to continue the treatment. “In the end I thought, ‘I’ll have to deal with this myself’,” she says. “One of the things that struck me, and I’ve kind of lived by, is ‘I can’t let that person continue to have power over me. The longer it stays with me and I don’t process it and move on from it, he’s still got me.’ So I had to just gradually let it go. I never think back on it.”

When Bridges was in her early 20s, she moved to Alice Springs with an air-force boyfriend. The details about this time in her life are sketchy, and she is not in a hurry to clear them up. Having rekindled her love of sport, she worked at the Alice Springs YMCA and entered physique competitions, such as Miss NT, Miss Australasia and Miss Oceania; in photographs from the time she looks like an oiled, muscular Gidget, with a long, flicked bob, fringe and laced tartan swimsuit.

She broke up with that boyfriend, met another and married him, walking down the aisle in a November Rain-style short white dress that prompted the whole church to “wolf-whistle and carry on”, the one-time groom, Ben Dombrowski, told tabloid magazine Woman’s Day in 2013 – the height of Bridges’ fame – after becoming annoyed he’d been airbrushed out of his ex-wife’s narrative. Bridges says she doesn’t remember much about the wedding, other than her mother’s dismay that it happened at all. “The marriage didn’t end well,” she says.

“Let’s just say that it was a decision not to stay together. We were young … It was a fun wedding, I suppose. It was an interesting dress.” She laughs nervously. “I was very naive.”

When she was in her late 20s, Bridges left Alice Springs and the three-year marriage to head to Sydney and found work at a Balmain gym frequented by John Keats. “It was the typical example of the girl who comes to the city with a big dream,” says Keats, then a prestige car dealer. He was good friends with the gym’s owner, Bill Moore, a British ex-bricklayer 17 years Bridges’ senior, who would become her second husband. “She used to send VHS tapes to the networks with her training,” says Keats. “She was so focused on improving herself.”

When Bridges arrived, the fitness industry was at a crossroads. It was the dying end of the G-string-over-tights era, when freestyle aerobics reigned but gyms were losing members because the routines – choreographed by the instructors – were so complicated. Bridges’ charisma and no-nonsense style drew bigger than usual numbers to the floor, and so her reputation grew. “You were a bit of a rock star, getting 100 people to your class,” she reflects.

Bridges was one of the first instructors to embrace a new type of aerobics pioneered in New Zealand by former Olympian Les Mills and loosely based on Jazzercise. “[It was] pre-choreographed,” says Sean Simpson. “Everyone got to know the moves … you knew what you had to do in each class, it took away all the angst.” Les Mills instructors wore black and meant business. Beginners, new members and even straight men returned to the aerobics floor.

Bridges became one of a dozen master trainers, teaching Les Mills workouts to gym teachers across the world. “To be considered a master trainer, you were a god-like figure,” says Simpson. “If you worked in the industry, you knew their names.” For many, it was the ultimate achievement. For Bridges, it was not enough. Her next ambition was television.

Simpson has never met anyone as driven. “If you’d identify what it was, you’d bottle it, sell it and you’d make a motza,” he says. “It’s who she is. It’s intrinsic … It’s there and it hasn’t left her.”

On the reception coffee table of the 12WBT headquarters sits a thin personalised photo book titled She Believed She Could, So She Did. It was created by a woman called Catherine, whose life changed when she signed up to the 12 Week Body Transformation. As the pages are turned, the photographs show Catherine becoming thinner, more active, and, in her own words, happier. “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart,” the inscription reads. She is one of hundreds of thousands of people who have signed up to the course.

When Good Weekend visits the Sydney office – an unadorned space with white open-plan desks and yellow filing cabinets, strewn with random pieces of fitness equipment – Bridges and marketing chief Nic Monteforte are in the company’s boardroom, meeting with new social media manager Chloe O’Shea, a young woman with well-shaped eyebrows and dewy skin. She’s been hired to amp up the company’s online presence, and has found room for improvement.

Facebook, which powered 12WBT’s initial rise 10 years ago, is a “dying platform”, O’Shea tells them. “It’s there for legitimacy”: users discover services or products on Instagram, then check Facebook to ensure they exist. Bridges sits with her leg propped up on the chair and her hand on her cheek, absorbed in the numbers on the room’s monitor. “More people look at my [Instagram] stories than my posts,” Bridges observes.

“It’s quick-form,” O’Shea replies. “People don’t like to read.”

Because Instagram gives prominence to content based on the number of shares and likes, O’Shea is creating a guide for 12WBT customers – who are mostly over 35 – who don’t know how to share or like.

The team discusses Bridges’ upcoming appearance on Celebrity Apprentice, the TV show in which famous people face business challenges and the worst performers are “fired”. Premiering this month on Channel Nine [owned by the publisher of Good Weekend], the series was shot over three months late last year. Bridges says she did it “for fun. For a challenge. I kind of thought … ‘I’ve had a fairly substantial upheaval in my personal life, maybe this would be good for me’.”

It’s also good for business; after all, television launched Bridges in the first place. At the end of the meeting, the team brainstorms ways to use the show to maximum effect. Someone suggests having a fellow apprentice celebrity do a 12WBT workout with her: “We expose it to that person’s audience.” Others to appear on the show include British billionaire Alan Sugar, designer Camilla Franks and singer Anthony Callea. Someone suggests a live Instagram post after each episode: “Julia Morris did it [after I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here] and it worked really well.”

When Bridges and Moore began the business with two friends in 2010, it was a groundbreaking idea: a way to deliver fitness to the four out of five people who did not attend gyms, but wanted to do something about their weight and health. The Biggest Loser, a TV show in which a relentless Bridges whipped morbidly obese contestants into shape, was still on air, and her name was everywhere: in supermarkets, in newspaper columns, on vitamin bottles. But success required sacrifice. “It all comes down to, how bad do you want it?” Bridges told a women’s networking breakfast in 2013. “Because you are going to need to want it bad.”

At that point, Moore was no longer her husband – their nine-year marriage had just broken up, and she had become involved with Willis, a fellow trainer on The Biggest Loser – but Moore was still her business partner. Many considered him a key ingredient in Bridges’ success. Moore was the one who identified, as he once put it, a “gap in the inspirational female role model market” during the era of airhead-persona stars like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. He urged Bridges to contact television stations, which led to a gig on Mornings with Kerri-Anne [Kennerley], then her big break on Biggest Loser. She had the magnetism and the training expertise; he had the business experience. “Michelle would probably not be Michelle without Bill,” one fitness industry observer said in 2013.

He is, by all accounts, a lovely bloke (Good Weekend approached Moore, who has remarried, for an interview for this story; after contacting Bridges’ publicist, he declined). “He’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and I still think that,” says Simpson. “There was something in the chemistry between those two that was undeniable. He was cheeky, she was cheeky; they bounced off each other. It just worked. It was quite wonderful to watch.”

Bridges’ family was hesitant about the 17-year age difference, but Moore won them over. Recently, however, Bridges has wondered whether the gap was too big. “It didn’t feel like it at the time, because he was so much fun,” she says. “Father figure? I don’t know. You’d have to talk to a psychologist. We just connected.” Moore was heartbroken when Bridges ended their relationship. “We all were,” says Simpson.

“When I turned out the light at night, and even staring at the ceiling at three in the morning, it was so overwhelming. I was getting tired.”

At its zenith, 12WBT was a suburban cultural phenomenon. “12WBTers” would create community Facebook groups, and meet up at parks across the country to exercise together. Sometimes Bridges would hold a mass workout; thousands would attend. They bought her books (she’s written 17), her workout gear, her Woollies chilled and frozen meal range. They queued for hundreds of metres to meet her, their hands shaking as they pulled out phones for selfies. “It’s like a cult, but a good cult,” said one loyal disciple. Moore put Bridges’ success down to the fact she was “everywoman”, he said in 2013. “Their problems are her problems.”

But the pace was too much, even for Bridges. “It was just 24-7 from the moment my feet hit the ground,” she says now. “When I turned out the light at night, and even staring at the ceiling at three o’clock in the morning, it was so overwhelming. I was getting tired.” Bridges’ marriage to Moore was a casualty. “We were basically business partners in the end,” she says.

With her new partner Willis – a handsome former army trainer who had three children to two women – and on falling pregnant with Axel at 44, Bridges did not want to make that mistake again. She took her foot off the accelerator. “In some ways, some were not happy about that because [the business] was such a juggernaut and there were other people involved,” she says. “But I was the face of it, and that was a lot.” Moore sold out of 12WBT in 2015, and the other two major shareholders followed in 2018. Bridges, who appears wary of talking about the business split, is now the sole director.

12WBT may have led the online fitness revolution in Australia, but it is now jostling with imitators seeking a slice of the market. They include Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth’s six-week Thor Workout and former Bachelor star Sam Wood’s 28-day program. The new queen of Australian fitness is Adelaide mum Kayla Itsines, who zoomed past Bridges to collect 12.8 million Instagram followers – Bridges has 281,000 – and who was estimated to be worth almost $500 million before she, too, separated from her husband and business co-founder, Tobi Pearce, last year.

Trends in fitness have also changed, with the shouty boot camps and “go hard” philosophy of which Bridges was once queen replaced by wellness and body positivity. Even Weight Watchers has rebadged itself WW (Weight loss and Wellness) with a focus on more than just slimming down.

After boasting a staff of more than 40 and at least 20,000 participants in each monthly round in 2014, 12WBT now employs 20 people, and about 22,000 sign up to the original $200, 12-week program a year. It has widened its offering to incorporate programs for pregnancy, for men only, and a “continuous lifestyle plan”, trying to remain relevant while the industry changes.

On January 26, 2020, Bridges was driving Axel to the beach in her Range Rover when, at about 11.30am in Bellevue Hill, a wealthy suburb in Sydney’s east, police signalled her to pull over for a random breath test. She initially hit her brakes and changed lanes, then Bridges told officers she’d used mouthwash five minutes earlier and drunk alcohol the previous night.

According to court documents, “Police noted [she] appeared nervous, her hands were shaking and her voice was trembling.” She registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.086, at the low end of a mid-range offence which carries a mandatory licence suspension.

News outlets jumped on the story. Not only was it a case of drink-driving involving a child passenger, but this was Michelle Bridges, the woman whose multimillion-dollar fortune was built on helping people rein in their indulgences. The next day Bridges issued a statement saying she was devastated and embarrassed about her “inexcusable” behaviour. She also revealed that, a few weeks earlier, she had broken up with Willis, and said that emotional turmoil had contributed to her driving under the influence.

She cannot discuss the details of the split due to legal proceedings in Family Court, but it floored her. “There were things that were very challenging in that,” she says, as tears roll down her cheeks. “And humiliating. And there was a lot of stuff I didn’t know. So that night [before the drink-driving incident], I had a couple of girlfriends around. Obviously we were drinking … it was as simple as that. And then the next morning, I made a very bad decision to get in the car. I was eight kilos lighter than I normally am. I’d been extremely stressed and not sleeping.

“I felt very alone. You’re putting on a brave face, and ‘I’m good, I’m fine’. So from the outside looking in, other than my very close friends and family, no one would have known what was going on for me, and for us. It was a challenge. To be honest, it was the hardest time of my life, ever, leading up to what happened. I felt like I was in a fog, and I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t understand.

“On Australia Day, I was pulled over … I was already in a pretty dark place. Then, you know, even more shame and humiliation came with that. The most important thing that came out of that – I hate crying,” she says, as she mops up more tears with a tissue, “was the incredible outpouring of people, colleagues, friends, people I’d worked with, strangers, my team – because I’ve always probably been that kind of person, as I explained to you before, to put my walls up.” She pauses, as the tears continue.

“That was the first time I’d publicly shown vulnerability, which was, actually, a year down the track, actually a frigging awesome thing. Because I let people in … Rather than trying to quickly fix it, find a solution, work it out, manage it, I just went with it. It was a good thing. It showed me the kindness of people.”

Dozens of other spurned, humiliated and devastated women reached out to her, sharing their own stories. “Some of them had me laughing my head off,” Bridges says. “Some lady told me about a crazy story with her ex – there were underpants being burned – the stories were hilarious and very comforting. The fact people took time to sit down and write me a letter was a very humbling experience. I felt, ‘I have to own this, I have to step up and own this, and then move on.’ ”


In February 2020, Bridges was fined $750 and banned from driving for three months. She also had to put an interlock device on her car for a year, which required her to pass a breath test every time she wanted to turn on the ignition.

Simpson says those months were harrowing. “Seeing her broken,” he says. “It was terrible to see your best friend go through that. You know when you’re pushed to your absolute limit and think, ‘Surely I can’t take any more’. And then something else happens.”

The drink-driving charge divided Bridges’ fans. Some were appalled, others forgiving. Melbourne woman Julie Hoffmann had been a depressed, 115-kilogram smoker when she signed up for the first-ever 12WBT round in 2010, and proceeded to lose 43 kilograms, became a personal trainer, and set a world burpee record (40 in a minute).

“I started boxing at 50. I do stupid things,” she says self-deprecatingly, “and a lot of it is thanks to her. I didn’t really have anyone believe in me before her.” After news of Bridges’ driving charge broke, Hoffmann took herself off social media. “I hate how terrible humans can be to other humans when they don’t really know what’s going on behind the scenes,” she says. “We all stuff up at some point. There were so many people bagging her out, and back when she was big on the program, she could do no wrong. I thought, ‘You ungrateful people.’ It didn’t alter how I felt about her.”

Then the coronavirus pandemic hit, and Australians had other things to worry about. Bridges sold her Potts Point apartment and retreated to her Southern Highlands property. “She’s definitely still recovering; that type of trauma takes a while to recover from,” says Simpson. “Anyone would take their sweet time to recover from that and everyone recovers differently. From my perspective, she’s doing great. I admire her strength, it could have broken a lot of other people a lot harder.”

Bridges never wanted a baby when she was with Moore, who has grown-up children. “He would always say to me, ‘If you want to have kids, we can do it,’ ” she says. “But it was never, ‘Let’s do it together’. I think he wasn’t really keen but would do it for me. I didn’t know if that was enough to get me over the line. Plus, business and career – it was incredible. When I was with Axel’s dad, the conversation came about. And I was excited by the prospect. It felt different.”

John Keats’ wife Louise wondered how Bridges would take to motherhood. “With Billy she had a dog, but he was the primary carer of the dog,” she says. “She was not a clucky woman. I thought, ‘Is she going to be able to do this?’ “

Turns out, Bridges could. Axel spends most of his time with his mother. “She does very much the lion’s share of the parenting,” says Louise. “Axel is her first priority and the next is daylight.”

Axel likes trains and Lego and books. He has his mother’s striking blue eyes. Bridges tries to avoid using babysitters, and keeps school-friendly work hours where possible. She takes Axel to swimming, karate and rugby union. She is the co-coach of his Bowral Blacks under-6 team, alongside a former representative of a South African Super Rugby team. “They are very over-qualified,” says Keats. “It’s like herding cats.”

Louise Keats’ mother was the sole daughter of a single mum (cooking writer Margaret Fulton), and she understands the bond. “It’s an intense relationship,” she says. “Axel is in no doubt his mother loves him. They are together all the time. She doesn’t mind sitting on the floor for hours with him, in a way that most of us find mind-numbingly boring. Sometimes I wonder how her wheels don’t fall off. She runs the house. She’s running the business. She’s also running a small farm, and dealing with the odd snake and the mower breaking down.”

The drive that helped propel Bridges to stardom has not gone; it’s just focused on different, perhaps more rewarding things. Bridges’ force of will, which saw her through a sometimes difficult childhood, drove her to wealth, influence and fame. But when she got there, she realised it was not quite where she wanted to be. Then, like so many women before her, motherhood shifted the tectonic plates of Bridges’ world. Perhaps Bill Moore’s description, eight years ago, of Bridges as “everywoman” is even more apt now than it was then.

“I didn’t have a child at 45 not to be with him,” she says. “You’re not serving yourself or anybody else around you if you are unhappy, or not living the kind of life you would like. I don’t have to take a back seat with my career, but I’m not winding the beast up like I used to, and I don’t want to.” As for Keats’s dream of pairing her with a country bloke: “I don’t think I’m really there yet. But let John have his Cupid fun and you never know what happens.”

Start Your Engines: Formula DRIFT Kicks Off Its Season in Atlanta

Formula DRIFT—America’s fastest-growing motorsport—kicks off its 2021 season next weekend at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on May 7-8 with the Royal Purple Road to the Championship presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, drivers run in pairs through a series of turns. They’re judged on speed, line through the turns, proximity to the clipping points, and how close they can get to the other car. It’s a tire-burning, high-speed elimination sport using 1,200 horsepower cars that take no prisoners if mistakes are made.

The sport of drifting originated in Japan and was introduced at a professional level in 2003 by Formula DRIFT. The opening round of its first full season in 2004 was held at the famous Road Atlanta course, which remains a favorite for fans and drivers alike. In fact, it’s remained on the FD calendar every year, with the exception of the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

The track has a number of unique characteristics. For example, it’s the only of the eight venues visited this year that has an elevation change equivalent to a six-story climb—something that forces drivers to adapt their drift style to accommodate as it rises and falls. At 650 feet, it also has the longest entry to the first turn, which means it has the highest entry speed. And with cars accelerating at full throttle, the drivers must be totally committed to initiate the first drift by throwing the car sideways at well over 100 mph.

Located in the green hills of Braselton, GA, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, while the Formula DRIFT event has become legendary for its tailgating parties and festival atmosphere. It’s also one of the loudest crowds at any of the year’s venues, so fans always enjoy a great atmosphere. COVID-19 restrictions have limited crowd sizes somewhat, and social distancing is required, but it’ll be awesome to see fans back in the grandstands cheering for their favorite drivers again. Unlike some domestic motorsports, Formula DRIFT is an all-weather event—rain or shine, we send it! A wet track won’t stop the drivers, but it does add another variable to keep everybody guessing about who the winner will be.

Last time the teams visited, Fredric Aasbo (Norway) was the winner, putting his skills learned on frozen lakes to good use. As the runner-up for three consecutive years, the 2015 FD Champion is always a serious contender. This will be his first ATL outing in the 1,100 horsepower Rockstar Energy Drink/Toyota GR Supra he debuted last year and he always means business.

Another man to watch is the newly crowned 2020 Formula DRIFT Champion, Vaughn Gittin Jr (USA) in the Monster Energy/Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-D. His battles with Aasbo have been legendary but Gittin never pulls his punches, even against teammate Chelsea DeNofa (USA) in the almost identical BC Racing / Nitto Tire / Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-D. DeNofa finished 2020 in second place but not until they’d both received bloody noses in battles throughout the season.

With three other former FD Champions in the mix, there’s no such thing as an easy heat as the top 32 PRO category drivers are eliminated in head-to-head battles until the round winner is crowned.

Formula DRIFT fans can watch the opening round in person over the weekend of May 7-8 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA. Those who can’t attend can enjoy the free-to-view livestream broadcast, available on both days for qualifying and the elimination heats. With hundreds of thousands of spectators tuning in around the world, there’s always plenty of action and catch.

5 tips for designing the ultimate Zen bedroom

After spending so much time at home and blending our personal spaces with workspaces, it can be hard to find a stress-free zone that doesn’t remind you of an email you need to respond to or the Zoom HIIT class you missed in the morning.

Research suggests that our immediate environment can help improve our overall mood, and that certain decorative elements can encourage creativity, peace and happiness.

Here are five design elements you can incorporate into your bedroom that can help improve your mental wellbeing.

Natural light

When decorating your bedroom, consider how you’ll be able to get the most amount of natural light to shine through. Sunlight is a natural mood lifter and is a great motivator to help you start the day.

One way you can soak up the sun is to position your bed so it is facing a window or door. Choosing light coloured curtains or blinds for windows will allow you to modify the amount of daylight you let in.

Clear the clutter

A cluttered space makes way for a cluttered mind, and can often cause unnecessary stress.

Consider investing in closet organisers, drawer dividers and under bed containers if your closet space is small. If you have limited space in your bedroom, be sure not to overcrowd the space with furniture.

Quick and easy daily habits like making your bed, putting your laundry away and cleaning up unnecessary clutter on surfaces can also dramatically change the overall spaciousness of your bedroom.

Add natural elements

A great way to elevate the Zen of your bedroom is by adding natural elements, such as plants and flowers.

The presence of plants is said to help boost concentration and improve your overall mood while also being a great way to naturally filter the air, reduce allergens and increase air quality.

If you struggle to keep plants alive, faux plants are a great alternative and provide the same psychological benefits as a natural plant.

Opting for natural bedding such as bamboo sheets, pillows and mattress protectors make for a comfortable, breathable sleep, and are kinder to the environment.

Choose calming colours

One of the most popular mood-altering design elements is colour. Choosing bright, warm colours when designing your bedroom will help illicit feelings of happiness and optimism.

If you’re not a fan of a bright coloured wall, another great way to add these colours to the space is through textiles, such as a rug, curtains, pillows or a bedspread.

Indulge in art pieces

Decorating your bedroom with art is another great way to boost the Zen within the space. Research into art therapy suggests that viewing and creating art can help cope with stress.

Buying or creating pieces that reflect you and your interests can help create a warm and inviting space that you want to be in. If you don’t have a lot of space to work with, opt for objects such as ceramics, pottery and other decorative homewares.

With these tips, you’ll be able to design the ultimate Zen bedroom that gives you peace amongst the chaos for when you need it the most.

Why now is the perfect time for a digital detox

For the most part, the word ‘detox’ comes with positive connotations, usually in reference to ridding oneself of unhealthy substances. We are constantly buying into juice detoxes, alcohol detoxes, sugar detoxes, and the list goes on, all with the aim of flushing ourselves out and making us feel good. However, when it comes to digital detoxes, some of us just can’t seem to put down the screen.


Why do we need to have a digital detox?

Screen times are at an all-time high and we are now suffering the consequences. I think more than ever, engaging digitally has become a massive problem for most of us. Lockdown left us with no choice but to turn to our digitals for work, socialising and pleasure. We have become reliant on dopamine dumps (a chemical related to our instant gratification in our reward and pleasure centre of the brain) and with that comes comparison, “the not good enough” narrative, body image issues, procrastination and the list goes on.

Excessive use of things like social media can not only cause a general dissatisfaction with life, but also increases the risk of developing various mental health issues. Several studies have found a strong link between heavy social media use and an increased risk for anxiety, depression, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. 


Social media often promotes negative experiences such as comparison or feeling inadequate about one’s life or appearance but oftentimes we don’t associate our unhappiness or negative feelings with our digital habits, so then it becomes a vicious cycle.

Why some people struggle to put the phone down

Unfortunately, most social media apps are deliberately designed to become addictive to users. In 2006, leading technology engineer Aza Raskin designed ‘infinite scroll’, one of the features of many apps that is now seen as highly habit forming. 

Most of us are familiar with this mechanism, allowing us to endlessly swipe down through content without having to click. Mr Raskin said the innovation kept users looking at their phones far longer than necessary. This is just one example of how our digital devices can become addictive, often mimicking other addictive devices like poker machines.

Another addictive aspect is social media ‘likes’, seen predominantly on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. The issue with the like button mechanism is that for many, we base our own sense of self-worth on the number of ‘likes’ we generate from our followers. This is incredibly dangerous for our self-esteem, constantly pushing us to search for validation digitally.  

‘Is this bringing me closer to or further away from the person I want to be?’

How can we kickstart a digital detox?

  • Set time boundaries

Set a time limit on your phone for different apps, limit yourself to 1 or 2 episodes of your favourite show. Or make a point to look at the time and set a stopwatch for 15 mins (or whatever the amount of time you think is fair).  

  • Try habit stacking

Habit stacking (‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear) is a term which refers to the idea that by clustering the habits we want to develop and sustain; we stand more chance of remembering them by associating related tasks with each other. A great way to implement habit stacking when it comes to digitally detoxing is pairing up something you want to do (screen time) with something you need to do (folding laundry). That way the only time you put energy into digitals is when you’re benefiting in some other way.

  • Be mindful about your practices

Every time you go to engage digitally, I want you to ask yourself, ‘is this bringing me closer to or further away from the person I want to be?’. The aim should be to limit our time spent on screens to things that are benefiting us and eliminating the aimless scrolling. It’s a cognitive reminder to stop investing time into pointless things that are probably just going to make us feel worse about ourselves.

Digital detoxing can then allow you to unplug and reconnect with the present moment and engage in mindful activities such as exercise, cooking, or reading.

The measure of a man is through his actions, not his words – a quality unassuming Adelaide 36ers centre Daniel Johnson has personified on his journey to 350 NBL games.

Rarely one to waste words, Johnson has built a stellar career, and a respected reputation, on the back of consistent performances dating back to his first professional stint with the Melbourne Tigers in 2008.

More than a decade on, Johnson is still producing as one of the NBL’s most underrated players.

On Saturday, he will celebrate a special milestone when the 36ers host the Brisbane Bullets.

You could forgive Johnson for soaking up the deserved credit, but in true fashion he is focused on putting his team first.

The 36ers are in seventh position and need to win nine of their final 10 games to have any chance of making the finals.

It’s a daunting prospect, but Johnson hasn’t given up on the season just yet.

“We’ve got a full squad now; we’ve had a few games under our belt, so we should be playing our best basketball right now,” Johnson said.

“If we are good enough to make it, stranger things have happened, and we are still confident that we can get a little string going.

“We need every win we can get at the moment, so it is not different to any other game, and we’ve just got to come out and try and get a win at home where we have been playing pretty well lately.”

Johnson’s team-first mentality doesn’t mean he isn’t grateful for his longevity in Australian basketball.

He knows many players have tried, and failed, to reach his level.

“Oh, I’m just excited to have been at the club for this long,” he said.

“It is a great club; I love it, and just being able to represent it for this long is pretty special.”

As Johnson celebrates 350 NBL games, his Adelaide teammate Josh Giddey is only just starting out following a standout rookie season.

Giddey is now NBA bound after declaring for the 2021 draft.

Johnson has no doubts that the Melbourne-born guard is destined for big things in America.

“At 18, the things he is doing in this league, I haven’t seen that before from an Australian in this league,” he said.

“That is special, so I’m excited to see what he goes on and accomplishes.

“It is great for Josh.

“He is loved around the group, and everyone really respects what he is doing and what he has been able to achieve at such a young age.

“We are looking forward to seeing him go on to bigger and better things and looking forward to following his journey.”


The veggies we need to eat a whole lot more of

Chances are you know vegetables are good for you, and even more importantly that you need to eat a whole lot more of them. With data showing that fewer than 1 in 10 Aussies get their daily recommended serves of fruits and veggies, it is safe to say most of us will benefit from a lot more veggie action.

Whilst any type of vegetable is good for us, there are a handful of super nutrient rich veggies that are a little more obscure and as such do not frequent the menu as often as they should to help reap the many nutritional benefits. So, if optimising nutrient intake is of interest to you, here are some of the super nutrient rich veggies we need to include more often as part of our weekly intake.

Jerusalem Artichokes

Not a common veggie staple in the diets of Australians, specifically Jerusalem artichokes are one of the few rich natural sources of prebiotic fibres, the special type of fibre that feeds the good bacteria in the gut, helping to support digestive health. Relatively low in carbohydrates and calories, and relatively high in protein for a vegetable, Jerusalem artichokes are best enjoyed roasted with olive oil, or even mashed as an alternative to potato mash.


The rich, bright colour and texture of beetroot give you some idea of how chock full of nutrition this vegetable really is. Beetroot contains a number of extremely powerful antioxidants including beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin known to support cell health and with minimal calories per serve, is a daily must include in your diet.

Recent research also confirmed that the high levels of nitric oxide in beetroot helps to improve blood flow with makes them a must as part of an anti-inflammatory diet and shots of concentrated beetroot juice have also been shown to improve cycling performance in sprint events.

Roast and add to salads, juice for a tasty mixed vegetable juice or grate and keep handy as an addition to sandwiches, crackers, dips and pates.

Collard greens

Without a doubt, leafy green veggies are one of the most nutrient foods we can eat, but one type of greens that we rarely hear of, yet which are one of the most nutrient rich vegetables are collard greens. Related to kale, collard greens are extremely nutrient rich with significant amounts of vitamin K, calcium, vitamin A and folate. Specifically it is the high antioxidant content of collard greens that associates it with healthier cells and a reduced risk of developing some types of cancer. Enjoy collard greens fresh or lightly cooked with olive oil for enhanced nutrient absorption.


A relative of nutrient rich broccoli, remember that cauliflower is just as nutrient rich as its green cousin and extremely versatile. Rich in vitamin C, K, B6, folate and dietary fibre, specifically it is the sulforaphane found in this group of vegetables that is associated with healthier cells and lower levels of inflammation in the body. Best enjoyed raw or lightly cooked, mashed cauliflower or grated makes a lower carb alternative to rice and can even be turned into a pretty tasty, low-carb pizza base. Even richer in nutrients are the less common purple cauliflowers, which contain the powerful antioxidant anthocyanin known for its anti-cancer properties.

Brussels sprouts

Polarising, people tend to either love or hate Brussels but you cannot deny that these hearty veggies are chock full of vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K, as well as dietary fibre and have proven anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits which are not negatively impacted when the Brussels are cooked. For this reason, if the intense flavour of Brussels is not your thing, enjoying them cooked with a more appealing sauce will still mean you can reap all the nutritional benefits in a flavoursome dish.

Red cabbage

Rich in vitamins C and A, all varieties of cabbage have been associated with a reduction in cancer risk, especially for breast, prostate and colorectal cancers.

Best consumed raw or lightly cooked, red cabbage in particular is also a rich source of the antioxidant ‘anthocyanin’, known for its cell health benefits. Fermenting cabbage and turning it into sauerkraut is also a way to increase your intake of probiotics, the bacteria that supports gut health.

While Aussies enjoy plenty of potatoes, it is the way we consume them via fried crisps or French fries that is the issue. Rather increasing our intake of whole, fibre-rich potatoes makes sense nutritionally. Not only is a potato one of the naturally most filling foods you can find, but potatoes, especially when enjoyed with a jacket offers plenty of dietary fibre, vitamin C and vitamin B6 all for just over 100 calories and 20-30g of carbs. And there is also now lower carb varieties of potato available if you are wanting lighter options.

Fitness titan Michelle Bridges’ rise after ‘the angel wings fell off’ – Sydney Morning Herald

A devastating relationship break-up and drink-driving charge would be hard enough for anyone to deal with, let alone having your public brand tarnished and livelihood threatened. But that’s what happened to fitness celebrity Michelle Bridges, says Sydney Morning Herald education editor Jordan Baker, on the latest episode of Good Weekend Talks.

“It must be very difficult, a strange position for her to be in,” says Baker, “having been effectively one of the Australian pioneers of the online fitness program, to now have her market share eaten away by competitors and imitators.”

Bridges – the woman who made millions spruiking “body transformation” – was brought low by personal dramas, but is now embracing a different kind of life overhaul, which may yet revive her appeal. “When this happened … the angel wings fell off, which, to me, I think makes her more human,” Baker says. “When her life started to crack a lot of people related to that.”

St Kilda coach Brett Ratten rejected suggestion his players weren’t working hard enough but conceded they have lacked urgency and needed to remedy their poor on-field communication fast.

The Saints, after back-to-back beltings in the past two weeks, have come under severe scrutiny, including accusations of laziness after losing the uncontested possession count by more than 140 against Port Adelaide last week.

Ratten’s men have a chance to restart their season against Hawthorn on Saturday and will do so with ruckman Paddy Ryder set to make his 2021 debut.

Jack Billings, Jimmy Webster and Bradley Hill have also been cleared to take on the Hawks, but backman Jake Carlisle is in doubt after leaving training early on Thursday with a back complaint.

Ryder hasn’t played a senior game since last year’s finals, and Ratten conceded the star big man wouldn’t be “perfect” against the Hawks.

“It‘s been a while for (Ryder) since he’s played senior footy,” Ratten said.

“He won‘t be perfect, he’ll make a few blues and things like that, but to have our ruck combination out there will give us a lot of confidence around the midfield.”

Ratten again jumped to the defence of big-money recruit Hill and said while old issues were resurfacing, the speedster wasn’t on his own in underperforming.

“I think at times he‘s (Hill) been in good spots and we haven’t given him the ball, and then other times he’s had the ball and other players have been in good spots,” Ratten said.

“With our group at the moment, everyone‘s trying to fix it themselves, and we need them to actually think of others and be in that team mode.

“Their agenda is the right one, they want to do it, they want to be the one to kickstart us, but it‘s not going to help us (overall), we need to do it collectively.”

Ratten said he’d noticed a significant and positive shift in training this week, with the players addressing the major areas of the coach’s concern, which weren’t just workrate.

“A little bit more intensity, without the ball, with the ball, and a bit more urgency around our communication and what we’re trying to achieve,” Ratten said.

“We were slow (against Port), and as we spoke about, the communication around the ball and behind the ball was not up to the level that we’re after. I think it’s sometimes just being switched on for longer.

“We’ve had a few weeks that we haven’t been at the level that we want to. There’s been periods of the games where we’ve played some all right footy.”
