Pablo Olivares, Younger Brother of World-Record Holder Jesus Olivares, Squats 400-Kilogram (881.8-Pound) PR

Strength clearly runs in this powerlifting family.

Pablo Olivares is the younger sibling of Jesus Olivares, the current owner of the all-time heaviest raw World Record total (1,152.5 kilograms/2,540.8 pounds) in powerlifting history. That means the athlete has a lot to live up to from an ambitious strength perspective. At the rate of the lesser-known Olivares’ training, he might not have much to worry about in this regard soon enough.

On May 16, 2023, Olivares posted a video to his Instagram profile where he captured a raw 400-kilogram (881.1-pound) squat during an intense training session. According to the caption of Olivares’ post, the lift is a personal record (PR) by five kilograms (11 pounds). Olivares used wrist wraps, knee sleeves, and a lifting belt to help him score the massive squat. It’s feats like this that evidently might put Olivares on a fast track to achieving milestones akin to those of his brother — who can be seen spotting him in the background of the clip.

While Olivares doesn’t have the same lofty profile as his World Record-holding brother — who is also the reigning two-time International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) raw World champion in the 120-kilogram (264-pound)-plus division — that doesn’t diminish what he’s accomplished to this stage of his career. Based on his precedent, monstrous squat PRs like this could only be scratching the surface of what he’s capable of at an individual level.

Here’s an overview of the younger Olivares’ all-time raw competition bests. The athlete has notably fluctuated from appearances in the 120-kilogram (264-pound)-plus, 124.3-kilogram (274-pound)-plus, and even 139.7-kilogram (308-pound)-plus divisions:

Pablo Olivares | All-Time Raw Competition Bests

  • Squat — 380 kilograms (837.7 pounds)
  • Bench Press — 215 kilograms (474 pounds)
  • Deadlift — 340 kilograms (749.5 pounds)
  • Total — 925 kilograms (2,039.3 pounds)

Some of the more noteworthy triumphs in Olivares’ powerlifting career include wins in the 2023 USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Texas Strength Classic, the 2022 Powerlifting America (AMP) Nationals, and the 2021 USAPL Texas Open. Since September 2021, Olivares has lost a powerlifting competition just once in five appearances.

Based on a recent Instagram post from 2023, Olivares has aspirations of eventually squatting 422 kilograms (930 pounds) by the end of the calendar year. At this rate, even if he does have some work to do to catch up to his more decorated sibling, it doesn’t seem like Olivares is running into any insurmountable obstacles.

Jesus Olivares Demolishes a 465-Kilogram (1,025.1-Pound) Raw Squat PR

Olivares is well past the 1,000-pound barrier, and he continues to climb.

Jesus Olivares’s Instagram username is “mega.gojira” — a play on words of the Japanese term for “Godzilla,” the fictional nuclear reptilian monster that brings nothing but destruction in its wake. Considering what Olivares achieves in the gym and on sanctioned lifting platforms, he certainly picked a fitting personal nickname nodding to his incredible strength. His latest leg-power feat once again paints the picture of a powerlifter worthy of the title, “King of the Monsters.”

On Feb. 20, 2023, Olivares posted an Instagram video of himself finishing off a 465-kilogram (1,025.1-pound) raw back squat during a training session. The lift is a personal record (PR) for the usual 120-kilogram-plus powerlifter. Olivares wore wrist wraps, a lifting belt, and knee sleeves to help him attain a new personal high-water mark. He also had no less than six spotters surrounding the bar during the lift for safety.

More from Breaking Muscle:

While it is his personal best, in competition or in training, this isn’t the first time Olivares has eclipsed the 1,000-pound raw squat barrier.

The athlete first achieved this noteworthy milestone in mid-September 2022 when he completed a raw squat of 455 kilograms (1,003 pounds). This followed Olivares squatting 450 kilograms (992 pounds) raw during a first-place performance in the 120-plus-kilogram weight class at the 2022 AMP Classic Open Nationals last spring.

Olivares’s latest squat PR is additionally notable for three main reasons.

For one, it comes as part of his preparation for the 2023 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Sheffield Powerlifting Championships. He will not be the only name-recognition athlete participating in the contest. For another reason, Olivares squatting 1,025.1 pounds puts him closer to Ray Williams’ All-Time Raw World Record of 490 kilograms (1,080.2 pounds) from the 2019 USA Powerlifting Arnold SBD Pro American.

Furthermore, should Olivares replicate this squat at the Sheffield Championships, he will tie Craig Foster for the third-heaviest raw squat of all time. Only fellow 120-kilogram-plus competitors Williams and Jezza Uepa (who squatted 470 kilograms/1,036.1 pounds at the 2017 Powerlifting America Brisbane Open) have ever lifted more.

While Olivares is still 44.2 kilograms away from the record, adding 10 kilograms (22.1 pounds) to his top mark in roughly half a year might be a sign he’s well on his way to reaching a hallowed destination.

It’s evident Olivares, who is still in his mid-20s, is already turning himself into a household name. Moving up in the squat record books, and perhaps even eventually putting his name on top, would be quite the way to announce his presence as a bona fide superstar.

Watch Powerlifter Jesus Olivares Smash a 417.3-Kilogram Squat (920-Pound) During Training

On April 26, 2022, Olivares showed why he’s someone to watch in the powerlifting sphere when the 23-year-old locked out a 417.3-kilogram squat (920-pound) with ease during a training session.

Takes 100% effort to make something look effortless.

Olivares wore wrist straps, a lifting belt, and knee sleeves for the lift. The athlete also had three spotters on hand as a precaution, though, given how easily he completed the squat — their direct intervention was unnecessary.

Check out the casual, staggering lift below, courtesy of Olivares’ Instagram profile:

Olivares at a Glance

Olivares may be in his early 20s, but he’s been competitive powerlifting in some capacity for almost a decade. A Texas native, Olivares began his career as a teenager with the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) in 2013. After getting some experience and meets under his belt, he managed to win the 2014 THSPA Mustang Invitational — his first-ever victory.

From there, it’s been mostly smooth sailing for the stellar young powerlifter.

Of late, Olivares has won six straight competitions and hasn’t lost an event since 2015. To date, his peak career achievement might be a first-place finish in the 2021 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Classic Powerlifting Championships while competing in the 120-kilogram-plus weight class. That has also been Olivares’ competition weight during his ongoing winning streak.

Here’s a rundown of some of the more notable results from Olivares’ ongoing career:

Jesus Olivares Notable Career Results

  • 2019 USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Winter Iron Open — 1st place
  • 2020 USAPL Capital City Classic — 1st place
  • 2020 USAPL Collegiate Cup and Texas Open — 1st place
  • 2021 USAPL Raw Nationals — 1st place
  • 2021 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships — 1st place
  • 2022 AMP Classic Open Nationals — 1st place

Olivares recently notched an unofficial world record for the 120-kilogram-plus weight class, among other feats. During the 2022 AMP Classic Open Nationals, the powerlifter pulled a 402.5-kilogram deadlift (887.3-pound) — which would’ve been the world record if achieved at an international competition. Ray Williams still holds the official all-time IPF mark with a 398.5-kilogram pull (878.5-pound) during the 2018 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships.

In addition, Olivares also scored a 1,110-kilogram total (2,447.1-pound) during the meet. It is the second-heaviest raw total for the 120-kilogram-plus weight class in the history of IPF powerlifting. According to Open Powerlifting, Daniel Bell holds the all-time top spot with a 1,182.5-kilogram total (2,607-pound) from the 2021 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Hybrid Showdown III.

Here are Olivares’ stats from his recent meet, where he broke multiple competition records in the 120-kilogram-plus weight class:

The Road Ahead

Olivares will continue to plug away with his training as he looks to defend his 2o21 IPF title. Considering his recent string of staggering results, he may become a repeat champion and officially log a world record or two.

The 2022 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships will take place on June 6-12, 2022, in Sun City, South Africa.
