Where to Go in 2024: 24 Destinations on Our Travel Bucket List

Despite inflation and rising stress about the uncertain state of the economy, Americans are traveling at record numbers, with no signs of slowing down. According to data from Mastercard, global travel grew 25 percent year-over-year from 2022 to 2023, and is now above pre-pandemic levels. On top of that, travelers are increasingly seeking unique experiences, spending 65 percent more this year on experiences.

As travel writers, this comes as no surprise. Airports were chaos this year, perhaps more than ever. Everyone, it seems, is looking for an escape—and we’re here to help make your next trip one of the best.

Why You Should Trust Us

Andy Cochrane spends nearly half his life on the road, in airport lounges, sidestreet cafes, noisy taxis, and odd hotels, chasing stories about interesting places and unique people. Moreover, Austa Somvichian-Clausen is a travel journalist, published author, and hospitality entrepreneur.

After years of globetrotting, it’s time for us to give back. Here are our recommendations for the trips you should to take in 2024. We put an emphasis on thoughtful tour operators with an eye on sustainability and community development, as well as adventure travel (it’s the Men’s Journal way).

Argentine Patagonia

Where to Book: Black Tomato Mitre Peninsula Trek

For the intrepid traveler, the Mitre Peninsula in Argentina should be at the top of your bucket list. Incredibly remote and preserved, it’s not the kind of destination you journey to solo, or without scrupulous planning and the right permits. Luckily, luxury travel group Black Tomato is adding the far-flung destination to its catalog in 2024, with a never-before-done expedition as part of its new “See You in the Moment” collection of trips. Because the most memorable bits of travel hinge upon the shared experience of an outstanding meal, formative event, special journey, fulfilling challenge, or milestone celebration, these ~30 itineraries are meant to be embarked upon in a group—with family or friends—and categorized by The Meal, The Event, The Challenge, The Journey, and The Celebration. This expedition to the Andes falls under The Challenge and will test your endurance in a thrilling way—whether hiking, sailing, or riding on horseback, staying in nomadic campsites along the way.

What to Do

The expedition begins in Ushuai, and what happens next depends on the needs and desires of your group, since Black Tomato expeditions are highly tailored. Helicopter and sail boat transportation could combine with sections of hiking and horseback riding to the tip of Tierra del Fuego, encountering snow-capped peaks, dense evergreen forests, glaciers, and glistening fjords. Extra experiences can also be added, such as history and geography lessons, a private yacht voyage to Isla de los Estados, and flying in a chef for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Val d’Orcia, Tuscany

Monteverdi Tuscany is a cyclist’s paradise as it’s set on a medieval hilltop.

Andy Cochrane

Where to Book and Stay: Monteverdi Tuscany

Set atop a medieval hilltop in the Val d’Orcia region of Tuscany, this boutique hotel is surrounded by rolling vineyards and immersed in art, architecture, and the very best local food and wine. Monteverdi Tuscany brings in world-class musicians and chefs to amplify your experience even further.

What to Do

An ideal stay includes cycling the winding roads around Tuscany, home to the famous Strade Bianche, paired with time at the on-site spa and wellness center to rest and rejuvenate. The center offers massages, cryotherapy, and IV treatments, along with access to saunas, underground pools with a waterfall, and cold plunges.

Cruises travel through the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the largest flooded forest in the world, connecting with local communities and exploring one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth.

What to Do

With opportunities to explore the rainforest on short hikes, guided excursions, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, bird watching, night safaris, and canopy walks, there’s something to do for everyone in the family. Inside the boat there’s a full exercise room, spa, and world-class restaurant with 5-star Peruvian cuisine.

Where to Book and Stay: Frontiers North

In 2024, the sun will be reaching the peak, or solar maximum, of its 11-year cycle. That means the northern lights viewing potential will basically be off the charts during high season, between October and April. Capturing quality images of this mind-blowing natural occurrence is obviously a must, and a multi-day itinerary from Frontiers North Adventures is centered around exactly that. Bonus: Frontiers is the only tour operator in Canada with B-Corp Certification.

What to Do

The trip takes off from Churchill, in the subarctic, where participants are led by a dedicated photo specialist guide, and cruise around in style on all-electric Tundra Buggies™—massive vehicles that transport guests in comfort. Besides chasing the lights, guests can also dogsled through the tundra with an indigenous guide, and enjoy dinner on a frozen lake. For those who can’t make the trip during peak season, Churchill actually has 300 days per year when the aurora borealis is visible.

Todos Santos, Mexico

Where to Book and Stay: Todos Santos Boutique Hotel

An hour north of Los Cabos lies the hidden oasis of Todos Santos. Known for its natural beauty, amazing surf and gallery-filled cobblestone streets, the small town in Mexico’s Baja California Sur is a tranquil reprieve from its highly trafficked neighbors. Todos Santos is also recognized as a “pueblo mágico,” or magic town, by the Mexican government as part of a program to promote lesser known villages in the country. February 2024 will also mark the opening of a new luxury property there, Todos Santos Boutique Hotel, which will join the town’s growing hotel ranks, including Paradero and San Cristobal Hotel.

What to Do

A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the 10-key boutique hotel set within a renovated historic estate will make you feel like you’re in a world of your own, whether swimming in a secluded heated pool or reading a book on the rooftop terrace.

Ubud, Bali

Where to Book and Stay: Viceroy Bali

Bali’s beachy coast is well-known as an internationally acclaimed destination for sunbathing and partying, but many are unaware of the rich culture, beautiful temples and lush terraced rice paddies just a few hours inland. Balinese culture, in the region of Ubud, is a vibrant tapestry woven with intricate rituals, colorful ceremonies, and traditional arts, deeply rooted in Hindu-Balinese spirituality. What makes it truly unique is the seamless integration of daily life with spiritual practices, evident in the ornate temples, elaborate dance performances, and communal ceremonies that showcase the island’s profound connection among art, religion, and community.

What to Do

At boutique hotel Viceroy Bali, set on the edge of a stunning ridge overlooking the lush Valley of the Kings, visitors next year are able to book bespoke experiences to peek (respectfully) into the unique culture and rituals of Bali. Through Viceroy’s Cultural Balinese Vacation Package, guests can book trips between three to five days in a luxury suite or pool villa. That includes two half-day tours of the sights you want to see around Ubud, exclusive cultural and gastronomic adventures, a walk or ride through the iconic rice paddies, and an hour-long Balinese massage.

Where to Book: Outdoor Switzerland

For any ski enthusiast, a trip to the Swiss Alps is already a dream come true. So, journeying to the charming apine village of Grindelwald, in the Jungfrau Region, is the cherry on top—providing not only cozy accommodations and cheesy ways to warm up (raclette, anyone?), but also adventure opportunities. Bungee jumping from a suspended gondola over alpine lakes is an option, as well as canyon swinging across a scenic gorge as powder falls around you.

What to Do

Take your alpine adventure to another level by booking through Outdoor Switzerland, which offers everything from beginner ski lessons to multi-day itineraries. Its Bernese Oberland Haute Route, for instance, includes four days of ski touring in some of the most stunning and remote locations in the world. During your tour, you’ll try your hand at epic glacier skiing by day, and spend nights warming up and celebrating in huts in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area. It helps that Jungfraujoch, aka the “Top of Europe,” is bathed in 365 days of powder every year.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Wilderness meets luxury in the Okavango.

Where to Book: Natural Selection

The Okavango Delta, a unique seasonal wetland area of Botswana known for lush biodiversity, might sound like the kind of place you only get to see through the pages of National Geographic. Once that might’ve been true, but lately it’s been opening up as the frontier for a new kind of safari from thoughtful operators that are rooted in sustainability and a community-oriented approach. One such operator is Natural Selection, which is launching a brand new program in May 2024 within Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve.

What to Do

The program was born from a partnership with Chief Tawana Moremi, the chief of the Batawana tribe—ensuring the safeguarding of the delicate ecosystems while providing opportunities for members of the tribe. Accommodation at the camp can be booked a la carte, or serve as your jumping off point for one of the Botswana-based safaris offered by Pristine Wilderness, with concentrations on anything from conservation to wellness to cycling.

Where to Stay: Rockhouse

Jamaica has been on the map for decades thanks to its sandy beaches and warm, welcoming culture. Rockhouse, in Negril, offers a different kind of experience that’s focused on slow travel and thoughtful experiences. Situated on a rocky cliffside over Pristine Cove, looking down onto bright turquoise waters, the boutique property provides a less-than-typical view of the island. Here, guests stay in rooms and suites scattered around eight acres of tropical garden.

What to Do

Guests are able to book experiences that require no extra travel, from snorkeling to candle-making. One of the unique offerings from Rockhouse is its psilocybin (magic mushroom) sound baths, thanks to legality on the island. In between relaxed days spent at the pool, you can book a two-hour session that incorporates a small dose of locally made psilocybin chocolate with meditation, breathwork, and immersive live sound therapy.

This packed 11-day trip takes adventurous travelers to the tip of Madagascar’s Masoala Peninsula—a destination so removed it’s only accessible by boat from the Masoala Forest Lodge, and guests can only stay at the lodge as part of the expedition.

What to Do

Kayaks through mangrove channels, visits to local villages known for their vanilla production, boat voyages, and whale watching are all part of this exciting itinerary by Wild Expeditions.

Book an Eco-Friendly Escape at America’s Top LEED-Certified Hotels

Let’s face it, the hotel biz isn’t exactly the most eco-friendly industry. Colossal properties and wasteful resorts tend to have a pretty hefty environmental footprint. But one easy way to plan a greener getaway is to start with your hotel booking. The lodging industry has seen a barrage of eco-friendly seals of approval and certification programs. However when it comes to green building rating systems, LEED-certified hotels reign supreme.

Chances are you’ve heard of LEED certification, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Developed by the United States Green Building Council, it’s become the most widely used green building rating system in the world. It essentially sets the global eco-standards for sustainable building practices and helps travelers see at a glance whether or not their hotel is an environmentally responsible choice.

To earn points, buildings are evaluated for meeting certain green criteria across various categories, such as sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. Based on the number of accrued points, a building is categorized into one of four tiers: LEED Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59 points), Gold (60-79 points), or Platinum (80-100 points).

The program’s popularity has snowballed with architects, property developers, and even the general public since its creation in 1993. With Earth Day approaching, here’s a look at some of the most impressive LEED-certified hotels across the country. Read on to learn how these eco-friendly escapes get creative with their design, programming, and practices.

1. Proximity Hotel: Greensboro, NC

The city of Greensboro became even greener when Proximity Hotel opened its doors in 2007. When it comes to the sustainable lodging movement, this 147-room luxury boutique property is a bona fide trailblazer. It made history by becoming the first hotel in the nation to achieve a LEED Platinum rating. Even better, the adjacent Print Works Bistro also received the top level of certification. More than 70 intentionally sustainable practices were implemented during the planning and construction phases. Roughly 87 percent of construction debris was recycled, diverting more than 1,500 tons of waste from landfills. Most of the furniture was crafted within 18 miles of the hotel, and an artist-in-residence created 500 original pieces from a temporary on-site studio, which eliminated packaging and shipping materials. The 4,000-square-foot rooftop is covered by 100 solar panels, which heat the majority of water used in the hotel and restaurant. Groundbreaking technology also played a part. Newly engineered variable-speed hoods in the restaurant enable smarter energy savings, and efficient new elevator models can capture energy and feed it back into the hotel’s electrical grid. Overall, the hotel uses 41 percent less energy than a comparable hotel, and water usage has been cut by a whopping 33 percent.

Esmé Brings Old-School Charm and Panache to South Beach

The Esmé Burger stacks Wagyu A5 beef, sambal “animal sauce,” fried and caramelized onions, smoked gouda, and bacon between a challah bun. From personal experience, we can tell you it pairs perfectly with a sunburn and a margarita. Come night, the space transforms into a buzzy nightclub of sorts. Dance under the stars or sip sangria on a sofa. The choice is yours, and there’s no wrong one.

Note: While Esmé Miami pool is only available to guests, there are only five larger daybeds set along the pool, so get there early. If one’s not free, don’t sweat; there’s a whole area of sofas between the pool and bar to camp out on.

The Drexel

Mediterranean fare awaits at this breezy spot. It’s evocative of Europe’s main summer haunts and coastal towns. As such, the menu is heavy on the seafood and has a whole section dedicated to vegetable dishes, as well as a bevy of pastas and pizzas, and ones made entirely in The Drexel’s wood-fire oven and charcoal grill (think wild prawns, braised lamb shank, and roasted chicken with salsa verde).

Tropezón

Keep the tapas comin’ at this Andalusian gin bar. Housemade gins infused with aromatics (e.g. Moroccan mint, blue matcha yuzu, and Egyptian lemongrass), fruits (e.g. sour cherry, nectarine, and backyard mango), nuts (Sri Lanka coconut or marcona almond), and even cured meat (bellota iberico or hojiblanca alive) are the main draw, but you can order any number of craft gins from the custom-tile bar. Go classic with a G&T or choose one of the spirits from the signature infusion program to reinvent your go-to libation.

Best Boutique Hotels That Offer Local Charm and World-Class Hospitality

Overwhelmed by all the hotel options on your next trip? Here’s a good suggestion: Start by narrowing it down to the best boutique hotels in your destination. Of all the different hotel categories out there, boutique hotels have the most unique point of view—typically a local one, given they aren’t standardized properties like the big-name brands.

On top of that, “boutique” can mean so many things, from design-centric to ultra-luxury to homegrown BnB-style hospitality. So, on your next vacation, a boutique browsing is likely to turn up something suitable to your tastes and budget level.

There are varying ideas of how large a hotel can be before it’s no longer “boutique.” That’s because after a certain point, large properties can’t exactly offer their guests that personable, charming, boutique experience. That’s not a knock on the large properties—it merely means they’re in a different category. And today, we’re focusing on 10 of our favorite boutique hotels, with a range of rooms from eight to 129.

Sure, it’s impossible to call any 10 hotels “the best boutique hotels in the world,” but we think this is a pretty damn good roster. Notice the range of offerings, then note the common thread between all 10 properties: charming ambiance, localized POV, and world-class hospitality.

1. Paradero, Todos Santos

Baja California Sur, Mexico

Mexican magic town Todos Santos is halfway between vacation-station Cabo San Lucas and the capital city La Paz (aka the world’s aquarium). And the slow-paced surfer’s paradise has a new attraction: Paradero, the 35-suite experience-driven wellness retreat with beautiful concrete-and-cacti contrasts. Paradero is set against five distinct ecosystems: Cardon cacti-dotted desert, undeveloped Pacific beaches, Sierra La Laguna Mountain range, 5,000-thick palm tree oasis, and sprawling farmlands, all under 355 days of sun the area experiences each year. Wellness spaces are inspired by secret watering holes found across the mountain ranges, with sound healing and Tamazcal ceremonies offered, among other rituals. Chef Eduardo Rios captains the culinary wing, putting his Pujol-trained perspective into each flavorful dish, with all ingredients grown or sourced locally (including 12 different types of peppers to power the dishes). It’s the first hotel from the company, which plans to expand to other “unspoiled destinations” across Mexico.

Best Pet-Friendly Hotels in the World You and Your Dog Will Love

Finding pet-friendly hotels that are right for you and your beloved four-legged travel companion is always challenging when planning a trip. You need to find a place that accepts all pets, won’t gouge you for the furry plus-one (especially if you’re already shelling out for high-end luxury), and covers all the essentials (e.g. green space, new smells, nearby territory marking potential, etc.).

Some pet-friendly hotels are only dog-friendly. Others are only small-dog-friendly. Others still are only super-small or very-specific-type-of-dog friendly. Some charge per night or per booking for your added companion. Others require a steep deposit. It’s an extra task just tailoring the place to your specific pet—let alone figuring out how much more it’s gonna cost you.

To help you with this search, here are some of our favorite pet-friendly hotels that will warmly welcome your furry pal—equipped with ideal nearby amenities (a park or beach) for them too. For your own additional search, we recommend BringFido as a starting point and always cross-checking with the hotel, as policies can frequently change. The following pet friendly accommodations deserve at least four-and-a-half licks.

Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel

Best Pet-Friendly Hotel in LA: Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel

Full of green spaces and a long strip of oceanfront with that historic pier, Santa Monica is one of the most accommodating spots in L.A. for pets. A block away from the sand, Loews Santa Monica Beach has its own VIP program for animals (Loews Loves Pets), catering to them with gourmet menus for cats and dogs, dog-walking maps, treat bags, catnip, pooper scoopers, special bedding, collars, extra bowls and leashes, and even pet-care services. There’s a $200 fee per booking, with 2 pets max per room.

Best Pet-Friendly NYC Hotel: The Mark

Your dog won’t want to miss Central Park—the highlight of any pooch’s NYC vacay. Steps away from the park on NYC’s Upper East Side, The Mark puts you close to all of that action. The hotel welcomes dogs with Molly Mutt beds, signature water bowls, and a custom placemat—and Famed Chef Jean-Georges tips the scale here with a “Spoiled Dog” menu. Best Hotels in Las Vegas for Businessmen and Bachelor Parties

In the City of Sin, the greatest wrong you can commit is booking a bad hotel. Seriously, you can’t toss a roulette pill without hitting a top-tier hotel, even if you’re off the Strip. That being said, for every great hotel, there is also a not-so-great one waiting for your misguided booking. Don’t be fooled by their mirage: You can even book incredible hotels for cheap prices in Las Vegas, given the wealth of competition.

So, whether you’re passing through town for a bachelor’s trip, a couple’s escape, a convention, a concert, a leisurely escape, or a shotgun wedding, there’s a hotel with your name on it (somewhere in the subscript, though, since the names in lights tend to be of the Wynn, Waldorf, and the Caesar variety). And this roster of Las Vegas’ best hotels is the surest gamble on your next visit through town.

1. Best High-End Luxury Hotel in Las Vegas: The Palazzo Las Vegas

Towering over the Venetian Resort and Convention Center complex, you find one of Vegas’ most awesome, luxurious properties: The Palazzo. There are only suites here—some over 1,000 square feet—and detailed with marble bathrooms, sunken living quarters, as well as glowing city views (after all, it’s the state’s tallest building, and the U.S.’s most spacious, too, with nearly 7 million square feet). A two-story waterfall welcomes visitors in the atrium; grandiose architecture recalls old-world Italy at its most stately.

2. Best Boutique Hotel in Las Vegas: The Cromwell

So much of Vegas hospitality is standardized, given the huge parent companies that run such large-scale hotels. The Cromwell, on the other hand, was the city’s first standalone boutique hotel, and matches if not exceeds the luxury and attentiveness of the big guys. (It is part of the Caesars network, after all.) It plays host to Drai’s nightclub and fine Italian eatery Giada, the latter from Ms. De Laurentiis herself. The Cromwell is also pet friendly, for those who value 5-star hospitality for four-legged companions.

3. Best Small Luxury Hotel in Las Vegas: Nobu Hotel Las Vegas

The ever-expanding Nobu Hotel chain got its start at Caesars Palace in 2013. Gilded details and modern art give the property its Japanese-inspired ambiance, while the seven onsite pools help give it big-luxury bravado. Best of all, you have direct access (as well as a room-service option) for Nobu Restaurant, which is under the direction of famed chef Nobu Matsuhisa.

4. Best Design Hotel in Las Vegas: The NoMad Las Vegas

With “residential comfort of a European home,” the NoMad pays attention to each design detail, while esthetically paying homage to the desert and City of Lights (that is, Vegas, not Paris). A mix of Vegas glamour and New York sensibility give its rooms and public spaces much to post Instagrams about—that Tiffany glass ceiling in the casino, for starters…

5. Best Hotel Pool in Las Vegas: Mandalay Bay Beach

Mandalay Bay Beach at Mandalay Bay has the city’s best adult-friendly waterpark, an 11-acre beach-lined oasis in the Nevadan desert. Rent a cabana to laze the day away, or do the same in the lazy river or lounge-friendly lagoon. Its 1.6 million gallon wave pool is an attraction in its own right, as are the beach bodies that line the perimeter of each pool.

6. Best Resort in Las Vegas: JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa

In Vegas, pretty much every hotel qualifies as a resort, given the expanse of offerings. But JW Marriott in Vegas’ Summerlin area may take top prize thanks to its secluded nature along the TPC Las Vegas Golf Course, with the Red Rock Canyon as backdrop. You’ll get a reprieve from the bustle of the Strip (it’s a 30-minute drive west), enjoying a spa treatment or an afternoon among the property’s waterfalls, river, koi ponds, and walking paths. This oasis connects all three towers of the resort, and centers you like the kind of resort escapes you’re accustomed to.

7. Best Budget Hotel in Las Vegas: El Cortez

The “original icon of downtown Las Vegas,” El Cortez is 80 years young and still family run (it also has one of the city’s few remaining family-run casinos). It’s on the National Register of Historic Places—the only casino with such a distinction. Despite that historic nature, El Cortez stays modern with its go-southwest decor, its latest overhaul done in 2019. As iconic and immortal as it may be, El Cortez remains affordable, and gives you a nice change of pace from the heart of the hectic Strip.

8. Best LGBTQ-Friendly Hotel in Las Vegas: Virgin Hotels Las Vegas

Virgin is tucked inside Paradise, an unincorporated area that is technically not Las Vegas, though both are roommates in Clark County. 9. Best Casino Hotel in Las Vegas: South Point Hotel Casino & Spa

Take it from the locals: They flock to South Point, for its 2,200+ slot and video poker machines, along with the 60+ casino pit table games. Watch the game on either of its               two wall-sized TVs or various plasma televisions around the Sports Book. And, despite being a 15-minute drive from the strip, South Point has 2,100+ rooms in its 4-star property, proving that if you build the best casino in Vegas, they will come.

10. Best Casino-Free Hotel in Las Vegas: Las Vegas Vdara Hotel & Spa

Casinos are nearly a given in Vegas, but certain travelers may want to retire home in the evening without the sound of slot machines or even the crowds that come with it. Vdara has all the makings of a standard-fare, gold-star hotel, but in Vegas it seems a fish out of water sans casino. It’s a 3-star Strip property that feels like 4 (how many 3-star hotels have a spa, poolside cabanas, and luxury suits?). The standard of hospitality is so high in Vegas, and Vdara competes against the best of ‘em by smartly choosing its amenities.

Most Affordable (and Expensive) Airbnb Beach House Rentals in America

If you’re itching for a getaway, it’s hard to beat renting a beach house. Lucky for you, new research from Airbnb shows exactly where you should go (and where you should avoid). A nationwide survey has revealed the beach towns with the most affordable Airbnb rentals and the spots where renting is most expensive.

Most Affordable Beach House Locations in America

If you’re looking for a beach getaway on the cheap, here are the most affordable coastal cities for Airbnb rentals:

  1. Port Arthur, TX
  2. Melbourne, FL
  3. Eureka, CA
  4. Wilmington, NC
  5. Long Beach, CA

Port Arthur’s nightly rentals are a very reasonable $95, but has just 43 listings, so you might want to book soon if you’re interested in a trip there. The other four all have average daily rates under $150. They vary on the number of available rentals, however.

On the plus side, Port Arthur (located just 90 miles east of Houston) scored a respectable 7.03 out of 10 in the survey’s overall “Beach Hotspot Score.” This metric analyzes factors like average rainfall, air quality, and average temperature to determine how well-suited a place is to beachside lounging. For comparison, the top-scoring city by that measure, Galveston, TX, notched a 7.64. Other oceanside hot spots like Miami Beach and Panama City, FL, and Lahaina, HI.

Most Expensive Beach House Locations in America

Of course, there are plenty of places where renting an Airbnb is an expensive proposition.

  1. Nantucket, MA
  2. Malibu, CA
  3. Montauk, NY
  4. Laguna Beach, CA
  5. Bar Harbour, ME

Iconic East Coast summer destinations Nantucket, MA and Montauk, NY top the list of most expensive beach towns with average daily rentals of $808 and $670, respectively. On the West Coast, Malibu, CA is the priciest spot with an average daily rate of $651. You can peruse the full survey results here.

But if a little sunshine and a swim is all you’re after, you might not even need to schlep to the beach. You can always take a dip in a classy hotel pool—you’ll get primo skyline views and you won’t have to deal with sand in your beer, either.
