Outdoor gear brands like The North Face, Patagonia, and Arc’teryx have become streetwear staples and are as popular on the trails as they are on city streets. On the other hand, Black Diamond has mainly focused on serving the mountain climbing community and is best known for making gear like harnesses and carabiners. Thankfully, you don’t have to know what belaying is to wear the brand’s apparel, including one of its most popular rain jackets that just went on sale at Backcountry.

Black Diamond’s Wind Shell Jacket was recently marked down to as low as $91—up to 35% off the normal $140 price. This lightweight, breathable layer has earned over 65 five-star ratings from shoppers who use it for everything from alpine running to hiking in the Southeastern US. It’s on sale in the Sulphur color, a subtle yellow hue, and is still available in sizes small through XL, though that could change quickly.

Since it’s performance-minded, the jacket does sacrifice some creature comforts in the name of cutting weight and bulk. There are no hand pockets, though the large zippered chest pocket offers secure storage for items like a phone, wallet, or sunglasses. This pocket also doubles as a packable pouch; the entire jacket packs into this pocket, and there’s a loop for clipping it to a bag for convenient carrying. Suitable for light rain, the jacket’s water-repellent finish keeps you dry in mild weather and is infused into the fabric itself. According to Black Diamond, this means you don’t need to treat it a second time with a spray. The jacket uses reliable YKK zippers, and the chest zips up to the chin for extra protection from the elements. The hood is also climbing helmet compatible.

The jacket is a popular option with climbers, but shoppers also use it for running and cycling. One called it “perfect for biking and hiking,” adding that “it is exactly the type of layer I was looking for.” Another wrote, “I mostly use this as a backup jacket for biking. It fits well in a back jersey pocket.”

A shopper who initially bought it for climbing wrote, “I also bring it running when the weather is questionable. You can fold it up small enough to shove in a running fanny pack.” Another runner called it “great for winter/springtime running,” adding, “It keeps you completely dry in the rain and snow without making you sweat.”

Others simply enjoy it because it’s a lightweight jacket for dealing with the sporadic spring weather. One shopper called it “extremely lightweight and packable” and summed up its appeal by calling it the “perfect jacket for spring.”

Black Diamond’s Distance Wind Shell is a great jacket for any hiker, cyclist, runner, or climber to stash in their gear bag, but it’s also great for more leisurely activities like walking the dog in cooler weather. Now up to 35% off, this discount offers a chance to get a high-quality piece of gear with lightweight construction that won’t slow you down. Consider picking one up for yourself while it’s still in stock.

This Columbia Insulated Jacket Is ‘Lightweight but Still Warm’ Enough for Winter in Any Climate and Is Currently 30% Off

While it’s still cold in many parts of the US, shoulder season is on the horizon. That means shedding heavy winter coats in favor of something more transitional, like a puffer jacket or a rain jacket. But shoppers say one particular Columbia jacket offers both waterproof protection and adaptable warmth, and it just went on sale at REI.

Right now, the Columbia Powder Lite Insulated Jacket is on sale for $112—30% off the original price of $160. It’s a top-rated jacket at REI, having amassed more than 240 five-star ratings from shoppers who rely on it for comfort and warmth. It’s available in two neutral colors in sizes small through 2XL.

This Columbia jacket is made with a water-resistant fabric shell and is lined with the brand’s prized Omni-Heat technology that regulates temperature and retains body heat. It also features a synthetic insulation that’s great for extra chilly days. Two hand pockets provide shelter for cold mitts while a secure internal pocket keeps valuables safely away from water.

Rain jackets, puffer jackets, and fleece zip-ups are all foundational shoulder season pieces, but a jacket like the Powder Lite is a solid transitional layer for the sporadic weather that happens between winter and spring. For days it decides to snow and then turn into rain, you’ll be protected by the shell. For days that start cold, warm up by noon, and finish in the 40s, the temperature-regulating lining will be your best friend. If you want to venture out on a hike on an overcast day, Columbia has baked in the tools needed to stay comfortable. And that’s what shoppers love about it.

Shopper reviews tell a story of how adaptive this jacket can be, with its lightweight construction, advanced liner fabric technology, and weatherproof features. “I love this jacket,” a shopper admitted. “Lightweight but still warm. Great for in the car because it’s not like the usual bulky winter coat…It was recommended by a friend and now I’m highly recommending it for men and women.”

Another thing to note among the reviews is where they’re coming from—shoppers have been loving this jacket from Boston to San Diego, spanning various climates. “It was warm without being too warm for California winters,” said one Southwestern shopper about the very mild, mid-60s winter temperatures. Another shopper said it was “just right for spring in Minnesota,” and added that this jacket kept them warm “when out walking in temps between 10 and 40 degrees for short periods of time.” A shopper from Georgia even praised its transitional comfort, noting it’s “very comfortable and provides all the warmth needed in the mountains.”

REI has made it clear that this is the last call for the Columbia Powder Lite Insulated Jacket, so once they start selling out, that’s it. If you’ve been searching for an ideal shoulder season layer that’ll get you through the ups and downs of the tween season, pick one of these up while your size is still available.

A ‘Classically Rugged’ Huckberry Waxed Jacket That Stands Up to Colorado Winters Is Now Over $125 Off

Waxed jackets have become increasingly popular with guys because they strike a balance between a rugged and refined aesthetic. Though timeless, their popularity was bolstered last after Pedro Pascal’s character used one to fight mushroom zombies in HBO’s The Last of Us. That jacket was made by Flint and Tinder, and one very similar to it just got a massive discount amid Huckberry’s winter sale.

Right now, the Flint and Tinder Wool-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket is on sale at Huckberry for as low as $232—a whopping 35% off the original $358 price tag. With more than 225 five-star ratings, these jackets very rarely go on sale. But right now they’re yours to score in dark green and dark brown.

Flint and Tinder’s Wool-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket is made right in Los Angeles and features an 8.5-ounce weather-resistant shelter cloth shell that develops a gorgeous patina the more it’s worn. The jacket is waxed on both sides for optimal performance and is re-waxable for the duration of its lifetime. It’s lined with warm Japanese wool blanket cloth throughout the interior with a slick polyester quilted sleeve liner that allows shirt sleeves to not bunch when putting it on. Like traditional trucker jackets, there are two side entry hand pockets (each lined with wool), a button chest pocket, and also an interior pocket.

This jacket is practically identical to the one Pascal wore in the show, with one major difference: the lining. Whereas the latter has a flannel lining, this one is heavier, donning the wool. Doing so instantly ups the warm factor and makes it a better option for winter wear. It’s also worth noting that sizing must be considered when shopping these trucker jackets. If they’ll be worn with heavy layers underneath, the brand and shoppers both recommend sizing up. If it’s going to be worn more as a top layer on T-shirts, your normal size will do well.

Aside from offering advice with sizing, shoppers say they love this jacket because it’s cozy and comfortable, it works in cold weather, and of course, it looks amazing as part of an outfit. “In Forest, this jacket has the look of vintage leather in a classically rugged style,” one shopper stated. “The fit is trim (I’m 6 foot 1 and 160 pounds, and the medium fits like a glove), but the canvas is softer than I expected and there’s nothing tight about it. Great material, workmanship, and cut.”

Some shoppers have tested the limits of this wool-lined jacket, even down to freezing temperatures. “I opted for the wool lining and I am glad I did,” a shopper said. “It’s warm enough for a chilly 32 to 40-degree day in Colorado. Color is great and just the right thickness of material for comfort and enough mobility.”

When Flint and Tinder waxed jackets like this one go on sale at Huckberry, especially when they’re priced in the low $200s, sizes typically don’t last long. So if you’ve had one of these on your mind and your size is still available, pull the trigger and save while you still can. If the size you need is sold out, you might also consider the Waxed Shirt Jacket as a lighter but still protective option, or even the Waxed Hudson Jacket for something similarly substantial.

L.L.Bean’s Puffer Jacket Is ‘Light Enough for Warm Days, Warm Enough for Cold Days,’ and It’s $50 Off

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

The puffer jacket was invented by and for outdoor adventurers, but it has long since become a cold-weather staple. Eddie Bauer is credited with making the first one, and since then, outdoor and fashion brands alike have reinterpreted puffers in every way imaginable. But L.L.Bean is one of the brands doing it the best in 2024. Right now, one of its most versatile puffers is on sale for under $150.

The Packaway Hooded Puffer Jacket is now on sale for $149—a 25% discount on the original price of $199. It has a technical design ideal for outdoor adventures, but the styling is minimalistic enough to suit cold-weather commutes and backyard hangs without the extra poof. Stock is very limited in carbon blue, but Nordstrom currently has the black colorway in sizes between small and XXL.

This jacket features a recycled ripstop polyester shell, which is both durable and responsible. The insulation is also recycled and made by Primaloft, one of the leading companies for performance insulation fabrics. The synthetic fill includes Aerogel, Primaloft’s lightweight NASA-inspired insulator, and Primaloft Gold Luxe, the company’s warmest fill for the weight. That makes this jacket light but warm. The outer and insulation are made using recycled polyester.

L.L.Bean also included several trail-inspired details that make it suitable for cold-weather hikes. It zips up to the chin and features a hood, protecting the face from cold gusts. There’s also a zippered “Napoleon” chest pocket that’s ideal for stashing snacks or sunglasses and two hand pockets that zip as well.

Today, puffer jackets come in different weights and styles to suit different seasons and activities. On the lighter end, you’ll find jackets like Patagonia’s Nano puff, which weighs next to nothing and is packable. You’ll also find heavier styles like The North Face Nuptse jacket that features the full Michelin Man look. L.L.Bean’s Packaway puffer is on the lighter side, making it a good option for mobility, whether you’re traveling or hiking. As the name suggests, the Packaway jacket packs into its own pocket for easy storage.

Shoppers appreciated the lightweight insulation, with one writing that it was “light enough for warm days, warm enough for cold days.” Another wrote that it was “not too heavy or bulky,” finding that the jacket “is fairly warm and very light and thin.”

The jacket’s packability was a major selling point as well. One shopper wrote that it was “easy to stuff in a suitcase or backpack and doesn’t wrinkle much,” while another wrote that it “packs down small to fit in my overnight bag.” Multiple shoppers found that the jacket ran small, so it’s worth considering a size larger than normal, especially if you plan to wear it over a fleece or sweater.

Staying warm in unpredictable weather requires a lightweight but warm jacket, and L.L.Bean’s Packaway puffer fits the bill. Since the blue sold out so quickly, we’re expecting the black to do the same. So, if you’ve been looking for a perfect three-season jacket, make sure to grab your size before it’s gone for good.
