While it’s still cold in many parts of the US, shoulder season is on the horizon. That means shedding heavy winter coats in favor of something more transitional, like a puffer jacket or a rain jacket. But shoppers say one particular Columbia jacket offers both waterproof protection and adaptable warmth, and it just went on sale at REI.

Right now, the Columbia Powder Lite Insulated Jacket is on sale for $112—30% off the original price of $160. It’s a top-rated jacket at REI, having amassed more than 240 five-star ratings from shoppers who rely on it for comfort and warmth. It’s available in two neutral colors in sizes small through 2XL.

This Columbia jacket is made with a water-resistant fabric shell and is lined with the brand’s prized Omni-Heat technology that regulates temperature and retains body heat. It also features a synthetic insulation that’s great for extra chilly days. Two hand pockets provide shelter for cold mitts while a secure internal pocket keeps valuables safely away from water.

Rain jackets, puffer jackets, and fleece zip-ups are all foundational shoulder season pieces, but a jacket like the Powder Lite is a solid transitional layer for the sporadic weather that happens between winter and spring. For days it decides to snow and then turn into rain, you’ll be protected by the shell. For days that start cold, warm up by noon, and finish in the 40s, the temperature-regulating lining will be your best friend. If you want to venture out on a hike on an overcast day, Columbia has baked in the tools needed to stay comfortable. And that’s what shoppers love about it.

Shopper reviews tell a story of how adaptive this jacket can be, with its lightweight construction, advanced liner fabric technology, and weatherproof features. “I love this jacket,” a shopper admitted. “Lightweight but still warm. Great for in the car because it’s not like the usual bulky winter coat…It was recommended by a friend and now I’m highly recommending it for men and women.”

Another thing to note among the reviews is where they’re coming from—shoppers have been loving this jacket from Boston to San Diego, spanning various climates. “It was warm without being too warm for California winters,” said one Southwestern shopper about the very mild, mid-60s winter temperatures. Another shopper said it was “just right for spring in Minnesota,” and added that this jacket kept them warm “when out walking in temps between 10 and 40 degrees for short periods of time.” A shopper from Georgia even praised its transitional comfort, noting it’s “very comfortable and provides all the warmth needed in the mountains.”

REI has made it clear that this is the last call for the Columbia Powder Lite Insulated Jacket, so once they start selling out, that’s it. If you’ve been searching for an ideal shoulder season layer that’ll get you through the ups and downs of the tween season, pick one of these up while your size is still available.

Cotopaxi’s Most Famous Jacket ‘Feels Like a Warm Hug’ and Is Nearly $90 Off

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

REI’s recent winter sale has produced some too-good-to-be-true discounts on anything from bestselling trail pants to $42 hiking boots, but men’s jackets, by far, have been the star of the show. REI is currently offering up to 40% off jackets from The North Face, Patagonia, and Columbia, among others, but one of the hottest deals to score is on an aptly-named Cotopaxi jacket.

The Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket is on sale at REI for $206—a 30% discount on the original price of $295. This jacket has earned more than 700 five-star ratings and is a continuous bestseller among the 600-plus men’s jackets on the site. It’s currently available in six vibrant colors in sizes small through 3XL. While the sale price is far from a bargain, there’s a reason so many shoppers are obsessed with this jacket.

Equal parts retro and modern, this colorful Cotopaxi down puffer jacket is an easy go-to for winter or shoulder season. It’s made from a very lightweight ripstop nylon that’s been treated with a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating to effectively slick moisture. It offers even more protection and warmth thanks to an elasticized hood and cuffs as well as an adjustable cord that runs along the hemline. Other standout features include zippered hand pockets, interior stash pockets, and its ability to pack into itself for easy storage.

What’s most special about this jacket is how the down is procured. In partnership with Allied Feather + Down, Cotopaxi is able to select goose and duck down that’s ethically sourced as a byproduct of the food industry. In doing so, it’s able to offer a higher-quality, longer-lasting product with minimal environmental impact.

While the brand’s commitment to sustainability and ethics brings shoppers in, it’s the product’s performance that makes them stay. Shoppers love this jacket because it’s warm enough for a range of seasons, fits like a glove, and offers a truly unique look among an ocean of boring jackets. “Light, comfortable, and warm,” as one shopper put it. “Colors are retro and remind me of my childhood. Perfect fit for under my ski jacket and stylish when I take the ski jacket off.”

Some shoppers rely on this jacket for protection in sub-zero temperatures. One shopper from Minnesota said they chose this as their daily winter jacket specifically because of the high down-fill content. “I’ve been wearing it during our cold snap of -4 degrees or so,” they said. “Even though I have a single light wool sweater on beneath, I’ve never felt cold… It seriously feels like a magic trick how warm I get while wearing it.” Another shopper echoed this, simply saying it “feels like a warm hug.”

While it’s not the most heavily discounted jacket during REI’s winter sale, the Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket might offer the most value in terms of what you actually get. Close to $90 off, it’s a jacket worth owning, and one you’ll be able to rely on for years. Some sizes have started selling out and we suspect more will follow. So if you’re looking for the ideal down puffer jacket, one that makes a great travel companion that’s durable enough for the morning commute, pick one of these up while they’re still in stock.

A ‘Light, Stylish, and Warm’ L.L. Bean Jacket ‘Perfect for Cold Days’ Is Selling Fast While on Sale at Nordstrom

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Every guy should have a good puffer jacket in his closet, but you could argue that it’s worth having more than one. Bulky Michelin Man-style puffers can withstand blustery wind and freezing temperatures, while lightweight, packable puffers are great for sunny winter hikes and everyday wear. If you’re in search of a versatile, lightweight option that’s ready for anything, look to outdoor brands like L.L. Bean.

Recently, the L.L. Bean Mountain Classic Insulated Puffer Jacket went on sale at Nordstrom for just $74, or $25 off the original $99 price. With more than 180 five-star ratings, the jacket is available for less in a deep teal color called Dark Pine. Most sizes are in stock, except for small.

Puffer jackets come with either down or synthetic insulation. Down is made from the soft plumage of ducks or geese, while synthetic down is made from shredded polyester that can better withstand water without losing effectiveness. L.L. Bean’s Mountain Classic puffer jacket is made from a synthetic fill, which includes recycled polyester, to reduce the environmental impact.

The light 80-gram fill jacket features horizontal cells of insulation in the body and arms, and the funnel neck design allows you to zip it up to your chin to block out the cold. There’s also a flap under the zipper placket that prevents heat loss. The brand has even included elasticated cuffs to add more heat retention.

Convenient snap pockets allow for secure storage, although there are no internal pockets. It’s not packable, but at less than a pound, it’s lightweight enough to roll up and stash in a backpack. As a lighter jacket, it may not be ideal for braving a polar vortex, but it is well-suited for multi-season use. Plus, the slightly retro look makes it easy to style on and off the trail.

Shoppers appreciated the lightweight insulation, with one writing that the jacket was “warm but not too puffy. Perfect for cold days.” Another shopper agreed, writing that the jacket was “light, stylish and warm” and noting it was “just right for those ‘in-between’ days.”

Shoppers also appreciated the ease of layering with the jacket, both under and over other garments. One wrote that using it as a sub-layer, “really takes any coat, jacket or parka to the next level in warmth.” Another found that it was “perfect for layering with a sweater.”

Whether you’d like to layer the L.L. Bean Mountain Classic Insulated Puffer Jacket with your winter clothes or you’re already looking ahead to spring, it’s a jacket that adds considerable depth to your rotation. At just $74, sizes are already selling out, so grab yours soon before it’s too late.

One of Huckberry’s Waxed Jackets Dubbed ‘Perfect’ by Shoppers Is Still Over $100 Off

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Flint and Tinder’s Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket surged in popularity after Pedro Pascal was seen wearing it in HBO’s The Last of Us, but the brand has an extensive collection of other waxed jacket styles that are just as cool. Many of these jackets fall around the $300 to $400 price range, and earlier this week, the bestselling Flannel-Lined Waxed Hudson Jacket had even been marked down by 30% in all colors for a limited time.

The price has gone back up on all but one colorway—the Black Watch, a classic green and navy tartan pattern. This colorway is still on sale for $278—30% off the original price of $398 for a total savings of $120. This jacket has over 250 five-star reviews with an average rating of 4.6 stars and ranks among the top-selling jackets at Huckberry.

This jacket features a 10-ounce British Millerain Tekwax Evolution 8 waxed canvas shell and a 100% cotton flannel lining. Together, they form a tough but tender piece of men’s outerwear with a weather-resistant exterior and cozy interior that locks in warmth when closed. Though similar to the brand’s now iconic waxed trucker jacket, the Hudson jacket adds a zipper and a myriad of pockets, including two drop-in pockets with side hand pockets, an additional front-flap pocket, an interior chest pocket, and a rear snap pocket. The Black Watch colorway also offers a contrasting corduroy collar.

Waxed jackets have a decorated history, but they’re becoming increasingly more popular as everyday outerwear. They offer practical use as a three-season, all-weather jacket that can dodge rain and snow and keep you warm in the process. But they also look great and get better looking as they age, developing a unique patina. As for style, they’re one of the best-looking jackets you could pick and layer nicely with a hoodie or fisherman sweater.

Shoppers rave about this jacket’s fit, style, and comfort, with “perfect” being a word found frequently in reviews. “Exactly what I was looking for—perfect shoulder season jacket with surprisingly good water resistance,” one shopper said.

Another shopper went as far as saying, “This jacket is perfect. Perfect style. Perfect fit. Perfect feel. Just awesome.”

Other shoppers highlight how they use the jacket, with some relying on it for colder weather. “This jacket is perfect for cool to cold autumn and mild winter days,” one shopper said. “It’s also water repellant. The front can be sealed to various degrees, from nearly airtight to slightly loose and breezy if it warms up. It looks like you’ve owned it for years right out of the box, and gets better and better even after a couple of weeks”

Flint and Tinder’s waxed jackets are a commodity, and once word gets around that a sale is live, sizes will start to fly. At just $278, the brand’s Flannel-Lined Waxed Hudson Jacket in Black Watch is an incredible value. If you’re looking for a reliable multi-season jacket, scoop one of these up with confidence. But do it quickly, as sizes are sure to sell out.

REI’s Two Bestselling Men’s Down Jackets Are Still Up to 50% Off During Its Cyber Week Sale

Winter weather can turn from nippy to nightmarish in a matter of hours. That’s why it’s a good idea to take stock of your winter clothes before it gets frigid. Fortunately, REI’s Cyber Week sale is still live, and two of the brand’s warmest down puffer jackets, ideal for everyday wear and cold-weather hiking, are up to 50% off for a few more days.

REI famously closes its doors on Black Friday as part of its “OptOutside” campaign, but the brand is in the midst of its alternative Cyber Week sale, which runs until December 4. Savings run the gamut, with deals on everything from kid’s e-bikes to camping and hiking gear, but they’re especially appealing on REI’s Co-op brand clothing, like the Magma 850 Down Hoodie and the 650 Down Jacket, which are on sale for as low as $77.

REI’s Magma hoodie features 850-fill-power goose down with an outer made from tear-resistant ripstop nylon. The versatile jacket features a hood, zippered hand and chest pockets, and a drawcord hem. The variegated design of the baffles (the cells that hold the down filling) provides insulation where it’s most needed. It’s also packable, making it easy to toss into a bag and take on the go. A very popular jacket, it’s still available in the black and “Stone Blue” colors for 50% off.

Shoppers were impressed with many features of the Magma hoodie, including the fit, with one saying it fits “very much as expected—loose enough for an underlayer and freedom of movement, but snug enough that you’re not heating up wasted space.” A shopper who lives in the Colorado Mountains also attested, “This jacket gets plenty of year-round wear.”

If you’re looking for a basic, even more affordable option, REI’s 650 Down Jacket is discounted to under $80. Originally $129, it’s 40% off during the Cyber Week sale. This jacket features simple horizontal baffles and a hoodless design. The drawcord at the waist and a funnel neck help seal in warmth. It uses 650-fill-power down and is also constructed from ripstop nylon. It comes in a variety of great colors, including black, red, blue, green, and gray.

Shoppers found that the 650 jacket is “very light and warm,” with other customers noting the economical price as a major plus. One shopper went as far as saying, “For the price, I don’t think you can beat it when you can buy two of these for the price of one [name brand jacket].”

What to Consider When Buying a Down Jacket at REI

When picking a down jacket, there are a lot of factors to consider, and the details can get technical. First, you’ll want to weigh the benefits of down vs synthetic down. Down is warmer, more compressible, and lighter weight than synthetic filling, but it can lose insulation when wet. Each of these REI jackets uses down, rather than synthetic, and has a DWR coating to repel water.

Down “fill power” is another important statistic to consider when choosing a jacket. Fill power, according to REI’s explainer, relates to the quality of the down, which is tested by measuring how much it compresses. A higher fill number denotes greater quality down because a higher down fill power will be better at insulating and lighter in weight. That doesn’t paint the full picture, though. The amount of fill used will affect the warmth (fill power explains quality, not quantity), as will other factors like the type of stitching. The general range of most jackets is between 500- and 900-fill-power.

REI’s Magma jacket has an 850-fill-power rating, making it more premium, but more expensive than the brand’s more casual 650 down jacket. Either jacket is well-suited for casual wear and adventure. But whichever jacket you choose, you’ll want to act fast, because these deals end promptly on December 4.

A Heated Jacket Shoppers Give ’12 Out of 10 Stars’ Is $70 Off Just Before Temps Drop

Though temperatures have been all over the place lately, cold weather is just around the corner. That means trading in baseball caps for beanies, sneakers for leather boots, and finding warm jackets in the back of the closet. But there’s one type of jacket, in particular, that’s a hot commodity for combating cold—heated jackets—and one of the best sellers on Amazon just took a generous price cut.

Right now, the Ororo Men’s Soft Shell Heated Jacket is on sale for just $128—a discount of $70 and 36% off the original price of $200. After more than 5,800 ratings, this heated jacket has a 4.6-star rating average with tons of customers giving it a perfect score. With most other heated jackets available on Amazon ranging between $125-$150, this is a great opportunity to grab a more expensive option on the lower end of the average price.

The men’s soft shell heated jacket from Ororo features battery-powered upper body heating elements inside a windproof and water-resistant poly-spandex blend shell. The jacket, which comes in black or green, has a detachable hood, reinforced zipper, and zip pockets for convenience. Carbon fiber-made heating elements, which are located on the left and right chest as well as the upper back, can be set to three heating levels (low, medium, and high) depending on the desired temperature.

Safety is always a concern for shoppers when looking for heated jackets. This model from Ororo has taken steps to provide a stress-free wearing experience. Not only is the carbon fiber heating element ready to withstand high energy conversion, but there’s a sensor built into the jacket that prevents it from overheating. Conveniently, because of the way it’s constructed, the jacket is also machine-washable for up to 50 cycles—just make sure to remove the battery first.

Customers have been using this heated jacket for everything from attending football games to plowing the driveway in some of the coldest parts of the country. If there’s one thing most will agree on, it’s that the jacket does exactly what it says it will do—keep you warm.

A customer from Minnesota said even jackets north of $500 can’t touch this one from Ororo. “In mid-November, the temps reach the negative numbers already. While my more expensive coat allowed the wind to leak through and was not water-repellent, the Ororo blocked even 30 mph winds,” they said. “While the coat is plenty warm without the heating element, once you turn it on, the difference is very noticeable.”

Some have even found more uses for this heated jacket, like one customer who learned that the battery pack may have another purpose. “The battery pack is actually awesome. I lost my outlet charger and ended up plugging my battery pack into the wall and charging my phone through it. I was able to watch a movie on my phone and by the time my movie was done, my phone had charged up almost completely,” they said. “12 out of 10 stars. Kind of expensive. But if I went back in time, no hesitation I would buy it again.”

With colder weather inevitable in most parts of the country, a heated jacket makes a lot of sense, especially for guys who have to be outside or live in cold states. And though the drop in temperature may be guaranteed, this price drop is not. Take advantage of the $128 sale price on this top-rated Ororo heated jacket before it goes back up in price.
