William Zabka Talks ‘Cobra Kai’ and the Magic of ‘The Karate Kid’

William Zabka swept the Karate Kid’s leg to great infamy in the ’80s movie classic. Now he’s the heart of the hit Netflix reboot series Cobra Kai. Read our Q&A with the star—but first, a rapid-fire round:

  • Favorite martial arts discipline? Korean Tang Soo Do.
  • Highest karate belt you’ve earned? Green.
  • Best parental advice? Treat work like a sport.
  • Go-to headbangers? Def Leppard, Whitesnake, and Zebra.
  • Is Johnny a hero? More of an anti-hero.

Men’s Journal: Why does Cobra Kai make us laugh more than The Karate Kid did?

William Zabka: The show was pitched as a dramedy, but the writers come from Hot Tub Time Machine and Harold & Kumar, so while it has action, heart and nostalgia, they stretch the boundaries with humor. Originally, I was told the show could stand on its own without a Karate Kid character and we’d call it Bad Sensei.

Back in 1984, did you have any clue how iconic your bully character Johnny Lawrence would become?

I was just turning 18—I didn’t know what “iconic” meant. Even if nobody had ever seen the movie, it was already one of the most special experiences in my life because it was my first film and I was working with the director who made Rocky, John Avildsen. But The Karate Kid was like catching lightning in a bottle. It’s never gone away.

What’s the over/under on how many times you’ve had “Sweep the leg” quoted at you?

“Sweep the leg.” “No mercy.” “Get him a body bag.” All those quotes have followed me for three decades. It’s part of the culture, and it’s all good. My alarm clock says “Sweep the leg” when I wake up. No, no, that’s not true.

Do you get challenged to bar fights?

I think the end of the movie, where Johnny hands Daniel the trophy and has a moment of redemption, saved me from a lot of that. But after the film I trained in martial arts, and the real black belts would show off a bit by getting in a good shot on Johnny.

The Internet theorizes that Daniel was a bully and Johnny the good guy.

I produced those videos, and my plan worked! No, but my POV always was that Johnny was operating with the tools given to him by life and his sensei. He overdid it, but he didn’t instigate any of those fights. Like, here was this new guy who came to town and stole his girl!

Do you and Ralph Macchio ever draw blood in your fight scenes?

We shoot fast and hard on Cobra Kai, so don’t have time to practice perfectly. Luckily, nobody has been kicked in the face so far, but stuff does happen, so we compare bruises. We’re definitely taking Epsom salt baths at night.

Care to admit your ’80s guilty pleasures?

I’m all ’80s guilty pleasures. There’s something special about the music and art from the ’80s. About five years ago I got to go backstage at a Van Halen concert at the Hollywood Bowl and ended up playing my version of “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” on Eddie’s guitar. It was incredible.

The series has referenced some cheesy old photos from when you were super ripped.

If you were a teen star in the ’80s, you’d have those teen magazines coming at you, and next thing you know you’re standing next to a rock on the beach with your shirt off.

How do you keep fit now?

I buckle down with cardio and a high-protein diet with lots of vegetables. I’m standing next to Ralph, who weighs a buck fifty-five, so I have to keep slim.

But Johnny gets to binge on Coors and junk food.

Yeah, that guy must have a superhero metabolism. I mean, he eats Manwiches.

Brothers Clash in the Latest ‘F9’ Trailer

After a disastrous year for theaters, this summer could see things return to something like normal: Several major blockbuster releases are planned, including F9, the ninth installment of the long-running Fast & Furious series. Although we still have a few months to go before it hits the big screen, excitement for the long-awaited film is ramping up, and the latest trailer provides more clues about what’s in store: plenty of insane car chases and a big showdown between Dom Toretto and his estranged brother, Jakob.

As we saw in the last trailer, the gang’s back together—Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang all return in F9. John Cena plays Dom’s brother, Jakob, an assassin who teams up with villain Cipher (Charlize Theron) and hatches a “world-shattering plot” that Dom and his team must stop, according to the F9 website.

The trailer gives a preview of some insane action sequences, including several flying cars, lots of hand-to-hand combat, and a super-powered magnet that can pull a car through a building. It also hints at what’s driving all that action. Jakob threatens the one thing Dom cares about most: his family.

“Brother against brother,” Cipher says in the trailer. “This should be interesting.”

It’s about time this movie sees the light of day: Originally slated for release in April 2019, the premiere was bumped several times due to conflicting release dates and the Covid-19 pandemic. But as director Justin Lin pointed out in a Q&A with Deadline, everyone involved wanted F9 (and the next two sequels in the series) to be seen in theaters.

“I think it will be worth the wait,” he said.

F9 will hit theaters on June 25.

Paul Rudd Meets a Gang of Mini-Pufts in New ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Clip

Of all the ghouls and demons that appear on screen in the Ghostbusters franchise, none is more iconic than the hundred-foot-tall Stay-Puft marshmallow man, who made his terrifying debut in the original Ghostbusters. Today, fans of the haunted marshmallow received some good news: A new clip for the upcoming film Ghostbusters: Afterlife features a devious gang of Mini-Pufts (pint-sized versions of the giant Stay-Puft man) causing all kinds of trouble in a grocery store.

The clip opens with Paul Rudd, who plays a Ghostbusters-obsessed teacher in Oklahoma, casually wandering through the store to pick up some ice cream. As he passes through the sweets aisle, a bag of Stay-Puft marshmallows suddenly starts to move, and a miniature Stay-Puft man bursts through the plastic. At first, he looks like a cute, friendly version of his haunted forebear, but looks are deceiving—he promptly bites Rudd’s character on the finger.

And watch out, because this evil marshmallow has lots of friends. You can check out the full clip in the video above.

The latest addition to the Ghostbusters series, Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a mother, Callie, who moves with her two kids to her father’s old farmhouse in Summerville, OK, after being evicted from their home in New York City. Her dad, it turns out, was one of the original Ghostbusters, and he has some old ghost-fighting equipment stashed away on the farm.

When the kids bring the gear to Rudd’s character, Mr. Grooberson, he tells them about the Ghostbusters—and soon, the small town is rocked with paranormal activity.

The new film includes plenty of references to the original ’80s movies, and features some of the original cast, too: Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd will both have small roles in the film. In addition, Jason Reitman, the son of the original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, is directing this installment.

It was originally slated for a summer 2020 premiere, but that was delayed due to COVID-19. The new film will make its debut in theaters on November 11, 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bob Odenkirk Is Ditching His Leisure Suits for Guns in New Action Flick ‘Nobody’

Bob Odenkirk, the actor best known as the criminally devious lawyer in Better Call Saul is trading his leisure suits for guns and ammo in the action flick Nobody. But before we delve into his latest venture, a rapid-fire round:

  • Favorite emoji?: Thumbs-up.
  • Advice to your younger self?: Calm down.
  • Favorite joke?: How many strings does a banjo have? A: Five too many.
  • Sexiest actress ever? Ruth Gordon, just to fuck you up.
  • Is Walter dead? I think so.

Men’s Journal: How’d this movie with the John Wick guys come about?

Bob Odenkirk: Well, I had the idea of a movie about a family man who’s hidden his true self. And then there’s these break-ins and he doesn’t know what to do with his rage. And I imagine that if this guy had done some military-style actions in his past then it would be even harder to swallow his anger and desire for vengeance. Derek Kolstad, who wrote the John Wick movies, heard my pitch and said, “I get it. I want to write that guy.”

That’s a big departure from Saul.

To be honest, it’s a personal movie. My family experienced two break-ins and one was particularly traumatic. I think I did the right thing—tried to keep things from escalating. You have a sense of, “If I’m supposed to help my family and society by sitting quietly on my hands, what the hell? What am I supposed to do?” Probably not pull out a gun and start shooting, but in a movie…

Do you own a firearm?

I do not, but I’d consider it for sure. After the experience of this movie, yeah, I mean they’re machines for killing, so you should get pretty good at it before taking one home.

Learn any emergency situational training while preparing for the film?

Yes, if you have any option to leave, you leave. That’s number one, always. I also learned a lot about working out from Daniel Bernhardt, one of the best stunt guys in Hollywood—great actor, too. I wanted to do my own fighting scenes, so I trained to be able do it without getting hurt.

What’s your daily routine like now?

I usually do a half-hour of cardio, then I’ll make a circuit and do maybe 100 squats, 100 pushups, 100 situps. There are great videos on YouTube that show different core exercises that I like to mix in. Then stretching, stretching, stretching.

You’ve had a varied career—must be fun.

Some people don’t know me from any of the comedy that I’ve done. And then some people only know me from that, and then some people only know me from How I Met Your Mother, which is weird. That show has some diehard fans.

What was it like being a writer on Saturday Night Live?

I didn’t have a great time at SNL. I was very young when I got hired and there’s constant stress and pressure there. It’s especially hard if you’re young. And there was a certain amount of messing with your head that goes on that doesn’t seem meaningful or necessary.

Best/worst memory?

The best was I wrote the motivational speaker skit for Chris Farley. The worst? When Steven Seagal hosted.

What’s next after Nobody?

I’m working on many different projects right now. My life is writing and working out, and I love it.

Boston Bruins All-Star Brad Marchand Talks NHL Outdoor Games at Lake Tahoe

When All-Star Brad Marchand hit the scene in 2006, it was the clear he was a grinder. He didn’t have the stature of a typical hockey player (standing at 5’9″), but he had exceptional skill…not to mention he’s scrappy as hell, earning the nickname “Leg Sweeper” for his frequent slew foots. We hopped on a video call with the Canadian ice hockey left winger and alternate captain for the NHL’s Boston Bruins ahead of the 2021 Honda NHL Outdoor Games at Lake Tahoe, in which the Bruins will play the Flyers on Sunday, Feb. 21. Marchand touches on the kind of preparation he relies on for playing outdoors in frigid temps; how that rock, paper, scissors game with Mika Zibanejad got started; and who the toughest goalie is to score on in the NHL right now.

As of Feb. 17, Marchand sits one goal shy of his 300th with Boston—a milestone reached by only six other Bruins. He, David Pastrnak, and Patrice Bergeron are also the second-highest scoring trio in the NHL since the start of the 2016-17 regular season with 980 total points. (In that timeframe, they’re second to Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who have a combined total of 1,073 points.)

Get to know Marchand a bit more in the video above, then catch the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers face off in the Honda NHL Outdoors event Sunday Feb. 21 as part ofNHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe.

The event will feature two regular-season outdoor games played at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, NV, and broadcast live at 3 p.m. ET on NBC in the U.S.

Vin Diesel and John Cena Face Off in New ‘F9’ Trailer

During turbulent times, it’s comforting to remember some things never change. For example, there’s always a new Fast and Furious film to look forward to. Vin Diesel and his crew are slated to return when F9 premieres this spring, and a new trailer that dropped during the Super Bowl gives a taste of what’s to come. As usual, it looks like we’re in for a wild ride.

The trailer starts out with a backyard gathering, and you’ll notice plenty of familiar faces: Diesel along with Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang. As the action ramps up—there’s a motorcycle chase through the jungle, and some kind of magnetic device pulling a car through a building—you can catch glimpses of some new additions to the cast, including John Cena (who plays Dom Toretto’s long-lost brother), Charlize Theron, and Helen Mirren. Check it out in the video above.

According to the F9 website, the new film will follow Toretto as he pulls the crew back together to stop a “world-shattering plot” led by his brother. As you’d expect, the action takes place in exotic locales across the globe. In this installment, locations include London, Edinburgh, Tokyo, Central America, Azerbaijan, and Tbilisi.

Jordana Brewster, who plays Mia Toretto, hasn’t appeared in a Fast & Furious film since Furious 7 in 2015, and in our Q&A with her, she said she was glad to be on set again.

“It’s amazing to be back,” she told Men’s Journal. “It’s been very cool to be a part of something that continues to grow. Something like this comes once in a lifetime.”

There are some familiar faces behind the camera, too: Justin Lin, who directed the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth films in the Fast & Furious franchise, returns to the director’s chair for F9. According to Brewster, he’s already had a big impact on the series.

“I think people forget what Justin Lin did after the third movie,” she said. “With the fourth Fast & Furious, it was his idea to bring back all the originals.”

Unfortunately for fans, the end of the road is coming. After F9, a tenth and final sequel is also planned, marking the end of a film series that has spanned two decades.

F9 premieres on May 28, 2021.
