The Clarks Wallabee occupies an odd place in menswear. What other shoe is this popular with both tenured professors and members of the Wu-Tang Clan? As is the case with most Clarks shoes, the reason lies at least partly in comfort. The cushioned, natural crepe sole can go toe-to-toe (pun intended) with most modern sneakers, and the Wallabee’s unique silhouette makes it an off-kilter classic.

The combination of supple suede and natural rubber comes at a cost, though, and Wallabees typically run for $160. But right now, Zappos is offering the Wallabee for as little as $91, a savings of $69. Plus, there is a range of colors on sale (enough for each member of the Wu-Tang). Sizes are starting to sell out, so act fast. You’ll want to consult the size chart, too: Wallabees are known for running large.

Clarks’ best-known silhouette is the desert boot, a classic that’s similarly made from suede or leather and natural crepe rubber. If the desert boot is the prodigy, the Wallabee is the dark horse. The shoe has an unusual squared-off moccasin toe and a short, ankle-cut shaft that’s somewhere between a boot and a shoe.

The squared moccasin toe silhouette shines in the comfort department, leaving more wiggle room than a rounded toe. And the crepe sole is a wedge style rather than a heeled sole, adding comfort and support under the entire foot.

Shoppers raved about the comfort of Clarks’ Wallabee boots, with one writing that they “beat my bedroom slippers for comfort.” Another wrote, “These are the most comfortable shoes for being on your feet all day. They are great for teachers, or anyone that is working on a hard surface for a long period of time.”

The aesthetic earned high marks as well, with one shopper writing that the boots look “great casual or dressed up,” and another appreciating that they “work well with jeans and khakis.”

The Wallabee is an enduring offbeat icon that’s been popular everywhere from the streets of Kingston and New York to college campuses. It’s on a rare sale at Zappos, so you’ll want to act fast.

Running shoes are some of the best options for walking, and they provide excellent support for a day spent on your feet or the go. The problem is that the performance-minded design of modern running shoes can ruin the look of casual outfits. That’s why retro runners make some of the best casual shoes.

One vintage-inspired style you should have on your radar is Reebok’s Classic Nylon sneaker, which features a sporty yet versatile design. Right now, you can score this old-school sneaker in Pure Grey/White for just $53, over $20 off the regular $75 price. It’s available in men’s sizes between 7.5 and 12 and is designed to run true to size.

Like most of the shoes in Reebok’s Classics line, these feature the Reebok logo next to the Union Jack, for a vibe that’s as British as arguing about Blur and Oasis in a pub. But despite its English roots, Reebok has become a global brand, making shoes for everyone from Shaq to Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley character in Aliens. Their worldwide appeal is reflected by the fact that the British-founded brand was formerly owned by German sneaker giant Adidas and is now based in the US.

The Classic Nylons feature a grippy rubber outsole for comfort on a variety of surfaces, and the mix of nylon and suede materials makes the shoes comfortable, stylish, and more versatile than the all-leather version. The sneakers also feature an EVA midsole and a padded foam sockliner for cushioned comfort.

Shoppers were impressed with the comfort of these shoes, with one writing that they were “very comfortable to walk in,” and another writing, “I walk on concrete all day and these shoes give great support.” The style was also a selling point, with one shopper writing that the shoe “looks great with just about anything.” Shoppers mentioned returning to this style after wearing them when they first came out, with one writing, “I had these in the ’90s and I loved them. I still love them.”

The Reebok Classic Nylon is big on ’90s style, and at just $53 on Zappos, they’re available for a ’90s price, too.

The 10 Men’s Fashion Trends You Should Know for 2024

The new year is an excellent opportunity to evaluate your personal style. Updating and upgrading how you present yourself requires thought, and often, expert advice. So below I offer 10 guidelines to consider, experiment with, and, if they genuinely resonate with you, incorporate for 2024.

Style trends currently favor the more relaxed, less fussy. That’s important to observe, but the advice offered here possesses a timeless quality. I believe fashion choices shouldn’t be solely dictated by trends as those who adhere too strictly to them often lack originality—never a good look. However, it is a good look to stay current and in touch with the cultural style zeitgeist. You will look and feel better, and people will notice. Above all, authenticity is key, and you should wear what works for you.

Menswear trends tend to be cyclical, and just as a particular garment or fit is happening now, the pendulum always swings. The following suggestions are meant to cast a wider net, offering generalized and timeless style tips for what to wear in the coming year(s).

Why You Should Trust Me

In addition to writing for Men’s Journal, I have covered topics ranging from menswear, fragrances, watches, grooming, and styling for Inside Hook, Robb Report, Esquire, and Men’s Health. I served as the market editor at Esquire for several years, scouring the industry for the best garments and goods that were not only worth the investment but also made for compelling stories and good advice for our readers.

I have always tried to add a timeless element to whatever I have written, as although trends are interesting and relevant to a degree, my heart has always been drawn to more perennial guidance and themes. My obsessive-compulsive tendencies are both a blessing and a curse and while I often delve into researching items to the point of exhaustion, it’s this approach that often positions me as a go-to person for advice. Whether it’s about coats, colognes, or turntable needles, people recognize that I’ve done the legwork. I enjoy inspiring others around me to seek out their unique interests in things that might make their life better.

Avoid: Skinny jeans.
Embrace: Straight leg, relaxed jeans.

From left: Buck Mason, Madewell, Levi’s

We are referring specifically to jeggings or jeans that look like they could be peeled off a guy’s legs. When your jeans leave you with no room to breathe not only is comfort sacrificed, but they are also reminiscent of what dominated jeans shelves about 10 years ago. Instead, opt for a slim or straight relaxed fit throughout the leg that gives some space, allowing for a more stylish silhouette. I like a slight taper as long as there is room throughout. You want to wear your jeans and not have them wear you.

Try these jeans:

Buck Mason Japanese Selvedge Full Saddle Jean, $175
Madewell 1991 Straight-Leg Jeans, $138
Levi’s 501 Original Fit Jeans $74 at Levi’s

Avoid: Pointy Chelsea boots.
Embrace: Durable slip-on boots

From left, clockwise: Taylor Stitch, Beckett Simons, Blundstones

About seven years ago you couldn’t walk anywhere without seeing a pointed Chelsea boot (often paired with skinny jeans!). This is a timeless style, but in the current relaxed and easy-going fashion climate, they may appear a bit too refined and posh. Instead, consider trying a rounder slip-on Chelsea boot, such as a Blundstone, which has experienced a fashion resurgence in the past few years. These versatile boots pair well with relaxed and straight-leg jeans or trousers, not to mention, they will be more durable in inclement weather.

Try these boots:

Blundstone Rustic Brown Chelsea Boot, $215
Beckett Simonon Silva Boots, $300
Taylor Stitch Redwood Waxed Suede Ranch Boot, $348

Avoid: Leather biker jackets.
Embrace: Bomber jackets

From left, clockwise: Buck Mason, Huckberry, Thursday Boot Co.

Disclaimer: A leather biker jacket is undeniably timeless. However, bikers have become too commonplace—a far cry from the edgy, iconic styles of the Ramones or Marlon Brando. We’re not suggesting donating it, but perhaps retiring it for a while. Instead, try a versatile, leather bomber jacket. A stylish bomber carries the same timeless essence as a biker jacket but exudes a more mature and refined aesthetic that effortlessly complements any outfit—and is just as cool. Rooted in military history (as is most menswear) a bomber jacket makes for a utilitarian, compelling alternative to the over-saturated biker jacket.

Try these bomber jackets:

Buck Mason Bruiser Leather Bomber Jacket, $598
Huckberry Golden Bear Leather Bomber, $1,280
Thursday Bomber Jacket, $349

Avoid: Stiff suit blazer with padding.
Embrace: Unstructured jacket with texture

From left, clockwise: Todd Snyder, Bonobos, Industry of all Nations

A tailored blazer is a crucial building block in a guy’s wardrobe and its fit and versatility are key for any situation that requires tailoring. A stiff, padded, and lined blazer gives the impression that you simply separated a suit jacket to pair with jeans and chinos. Instead, opt for an unlined and unstructured blazer. They are refined, no fuss, and mold to your body better, pairing well with everything from wool flannel trousers to chinos to jeans. Bonus points if it has some texture and scrunch, not a straight, sheeny matte finish. Extra bonus points if it is double—breasted.

Try these jackets:

Todd Snyder Italian Knit Madison Sport Coat, $698
Bonobos Jetsetter Unconstructed Italian Wool Blazer, $400
Industry of all Nations Clean Blazer, $240

Avoid: Lots of Jewelry.
Embrace: One of each type.

From left, clockwise: David Yurman, Tom Wood at Mr. Porter, Miansai

With accessories, less is usually more, and for most men, that principle especially applies to jewelry. While figures like Keith Richards and Johnny Depp can effortlessly pull off wearing enough bracelets and rings to circle the earth, that is part of their unique brand (again, authenticity is key). For most guys, I recommend following the “one of each” rule: one bracelet, one ring, and one necklace. These accessories should serve as an extra 10 percent that adds character, personality, and originality to your look without overpowering it.

Try these accessories:

Avoid: Shackets.
Embrace: A chore jacket

From left, clockwise: Quince, Huckberry, Alex Mill

Don’t get me wrong, I do like an open overshirt. A chore jacket, however, has become a quintessential piece in any man’s wardrobe, and it certainly deserves to be. The iconic French chore jacket, usually dyed in an indigo blue but available in many colors, features a utilitarian design that seamlessly complements any outfit, imparting an air of tailored ease. Its numerous pockets add practicality, and the silhouette is celebrated for its simplicity, durability, and historical charm. A chore jacket is the perfect middle ground when a blazer is too tailored, and a shirt jacket is too casual. Wear them all day, every day.

Try these chore jackets:

Huckberry French Moleskin Work Jacket, $275

Avoid: Pique polo shirts.
Embrace: Knit polo shirts.

From left, clockwise: Todd Snyder, Marine Layer, J.Crew

Save the pique polo shirt for golf courses and beaches. The knit polo shirt, combining the comfort of a knit sweater with the silhouette of a polo and cutaway collar, has been a staple in the stylish man’s wardrobe for years. Drawing inspiration from the enduring vintage aesthetics of the 50s and 60s, knit polos effortlessly blend cool sophistication with timeless appeal. Pair one with a blazer for a chic, dressed-up appearance, or wear casually with shorts or jeans; it all works. Start with a solid color as the texture and collar make a statement on their own, then consider variations or piping for added character.

Try these knit polos:

Todd SnyderLightweight Cashmere Montauk Polo, $348
J. Crew Cashmere Short Sleeve Polo, $70
Marine Layer Greyson Sweater Polo, $88

Avoid: Ornately patterned dress shirt.
Embrace: A simple, chambray shirt.

From left, clockwise: Taylor Stitch, Faherty, J.Crew

Dress shirts are a wardrobe necessity, but excessive patterns like paisley or diamonds are an eyesore. (Faint stripes and plaids, however, are tasteful and timeless.) A simple chambray shirt exudes an effortless chic that complements a knit tie as easily as it works with casual denim. It is a simple, yet versatile choice, making it the perfect go-to collared shirt in your wardrobe. Less is often more.

Try these chambray shirts:

Faherty The Tried & True Chambray Shirt, $148
Taylor Stitch The Ledge Shirt, $102
J. Crew Organic Cotton Chambray Shirt, $90

Avoid: Monk-strap shoes.
Embrace: Round-toe loafers

From left, clockwise: Mr. P, Allen Edmonds, Grenson

Monk straps have a timeless appeal; however, in the current trend cycle, their buckled strap appearance might seem a bit too ornate and regal. Consider opting for leather loafers, but not just any ordinary pair. A rounder toe and chunkier sole provide a more robust and casual vibe. My favorite way to wear them is with white socks and light-wash jeans, yet their versatility shines as they effortlessly complement tailoring or virtually anything else.

Try these round-toe loafers:

Grenson Ernie Leather Loafer, $480
Mr Porter Scott Polished Leather Loafers, $355
Allen Edmonds Freeport Weatherproof Penny Loafer, $173

Travel in First-Class Style With Cole Haan’s 4.ZERØGRAND Stitchlite™ Oxford

This article was produced in partnership with Cole Haan.

With airlines cutting costs at every turn and record crowds funneling through the world’s airports, it might seem like the halcyon days of glamorous travel will never make a comeback. But that doesn’t mean mens’ style should also become a victim of today’s air travel woes.

“It’s tempting to just throw on your coziest clothes, but we all can put a little more effort into crafting an elevated jet-set look that doesn’t forgo the comfort of sweats,” mens’ fashion stylist Seppe Tirabassi tells Men’s Journal. “The return of travel is something worth celebrating. Don’t spoil it for yourself by looking sloppy.”

While the jury is still out on whether dressing to the nines might win you a surprise flight upgrade, it certainly won’t hurt your chances. And if there’s one shoe worthy of a first-class ticket, it’s Cole Haan’s 4.ZERØGRAND Stitchlite™ Oxford.

Cole Haan seamlessly marries innovative material craftsmanship and striking design with the 4.ZERØGRAND Oxford. Constructed in a breathable Stitchlite™ knit, the uppers will ensure that your feet stay cool and comfortable throughout your journey. When it’s time to tackle the airport security line, sliding your shoes off and on will be a breeze thanks to the slight stretch factor of the fabric. (Just make sure you’re wearing Cole Haan ZERØGRAND Performance Crew Socks so you don’t have to waltz through barefoot.)

Be prepared: Fellow travelers will be ogling your Oxfords—blame it on the handsome wingtip embellishment on the uppers, something you’d typically find on a dapper dress shoe. But they’re more than just an attractive pair of kicks; they’re comfy and ideal for traveling, too. When travel days keep you on your feet for extended periods, you’ll appreciate the shoes’ layers of proprietary cushioning compounds. They softly pad each step, whether you’re loafing around the terminal or sprinting to the gate just before the boarding door closes. In addition, the Oxfords’ lightweight construction makes them easy to pack: They won’t weigh down your suitcase on the return trip home (though we think they deserve to get shown off at the airport).

The 4.ZERØGRAND Oxford comes in four colorways, but for traveling, Tirabassi likes the Glacier Gray color, which serves as the foundation for this low-profile monochromatic look.

“Each piece is more or less a gray tone, but the bright yellow sole adds a fun pop of color that will catch peoples’ eye,” says the stylist, who travels frequently for photoshoots.

As for the rest of the look, Tirabassi points to one material that essentially defines sophisticated comfort: cashmere.

“There’s nothing like the sensation of slipping on a jogger made from one-hundred percent cashmere,” he says.

He recommends the brand Naked Cashmere for its solid selection of high-quality yet surprisingly affordable cashmere garments.

“Skip the shapeless cotton sweats and go for Naked Cashmere’s matching set of monochromatic zip-up hoodies and joggers,” Tirabassi says. “These pieces are breathable and lightweight, but will keep you nice and warm on a drafty red-eye. Plus, they won’t wrinkle, so you’ll touch down at your destination looking like a million bucks.”

Underneath, a plain white cotton T-shirt, like Mott & Bow’s Classic Crew Driggs, is all you need.

When traveling, it’s vital to master the art of layering. Whether you’re escaping your chilly hometown for a beach getaway or heading out on a ski trip, the last thing you want to do is lug around a bulky coat through the airport.

“Not only can it get pretty cold on a flight, but even in the height of summer, you may find yourself needing an extra layer when the A.C. is blasting indoors,” Tirabassi says. “Keeping with the monochromatic gray palette, this quilted down vest from Brunello Cucinelli is a smart layer because it can be rolled up into a backpack or suitcase when you’re not wearing it.”

He also notes that while Brunello falls on the higher end of the price spectrum, you can find similar lightweight puffer vests in nearly any budget.

Complete the look with a plain gray cap—Loro Piana’s super-soft Ty Baseball Cap sticks with the cashmere theme—for an extra dash of anonymity or to cover up unkempt hair. You can also pull the brim over your eye to catch a snooze mid-flight.

Last, but certainly not least, every traveler needs a durable, TSA-approved backpack to keep all their essentials within easy reach. Cole Haan’s water-resistant ZERØGRAND Slim Convertible Backpack was designed with ergonomic backpack straps to rest lightly on the shoulders, and it comes with a trolley pass strap to slide over the handle of your carry-on luggage. Multiple interior compartments make it easy to organize important documents, electronics, and other gear.

“Like the Cole Haan Oxfords, this is a fun, functional accent piece that will add a bit of personality to your monochromatic look,” says Tirabassi. “Ironically, this bold camo print is going to make you stand out from the crowd.”

Master Your Office Dress Code With Cole Haan’s 4.ZERØGRAND Stitchlite™ Oxford

This article was produced in partnership with Cole Haan.

Remember what dressing up for the office was like? You’re not the only one who swapped a wardrobe of wrinkle-free workwear for a Zoom-friendly getup of sweats and slippers, but as companies across the country welcome employees back to their desks, it’s time to brush up on what it means to dress business casual. After a long hiatus from face-to-face interactions, you’ll want to transition back into office culture armed with a dress-to-impress attitude. Whether you’re on track to land a promotion or in the first few days of a new job, flexing your workplace style muscles with a game-raising outfit will pay off in spades.

“It’s no secret that we all dress down for virtual meetings and phone calls, but when you’re in the office around colleagues and your boss, it’s crucial to show that you’re committed to looking presentable while on the clock,” New York City-based menswear stylist Seppe Tirabassi tells Men’s Journal. “Now is an ideal opportunity to elevate the professionalism of your attire, which you can do without sacrificing the comfort of your stay-at-home clothes and footwear.”

When it comes to business casual, there are a few select menswear brands that get it right every time. Cole Haan is one of them. For nearly 100 years, the brand has been redefining the rules of how to dress in an ever-evolving workplace. The heritage label continues to revamp its most popular releases, like the best-selling 4.ZERØGRAND shoe, which disrupted the work footwear category in 2020 with its striking design and innovative construction. For Tirabassi, Cole Haan’s new 4.ZERØGRAND Stitchlite™ Oxfords are a rock-solid foundation for building a sophisticated office outfit.

Blurring the lines between formal footwear and casual sneakers, Cole Haan’s elegant Oxfords are crafted with ultra-breathable Stitchlite™ fabric to keep your feet dry and cool, and they feature decorative wingtip details that evoke the classic embellishments of a mainstay dress shoe.

“These are a great alternative to a leather Oxford that you’d typically pair with a suit,” Tirabassi says. “When you’ve got long days at the office, it’s alright to give your feet a break now and then with a more ergonomic shoe.”

Whether you’re an architect running around town for site visits or a software engineer glued to your keyboard, you’ll also appreciate the innovative multi-layered foam cushioning in the sole of the 4.ZERØGRAND Stitchlite™ Oxfords.

“No one has to know just how comfortable you are in these Oxfords,” Tirabassi adds. “Just keep your ankles covered with a pair of socks, like one of Cole Haan’s Stripe Dress Crew Socks in gray or navy.”

Tirabassi also has some advice for color matching.

“The beige version of the Oxfords with blue laces complements a relaxed navy or light blue suit perfectly,” he says. “Plus, the visual contrast will have eyes gravitating toward the shoe.”

As a reference, he points to J. Crew’s Ludlow Unstructured Suit, which is crafted with fabric from Baird McNutt, an Irish Mill that produces some of the world’s finest linen. Since the jacket is unpadded, it’s versatile and comfortable to wear all day long, from morning bike commutes to rowdy happy hours with the team.

“This isn’t your dad’s boxy suit. The slim fit is modern, cool, and very office-appropriate,” says Tirabassi. “Guys tend to think that clothes labeled as ‘slim cut’ will be uncomfortably tight, like a pair of skinny jeans, but it just means that the shape of the garment is a bit more tailored. In any case, the breathable blend of linen and cotton is perfect for a spring and summer wardrobe.”

Rather than styling your suit with a dress shirt, opt for a simple white oxford like Taylor Stitch’s organic cotton Everyday Oxford, which comes in a tailored fit with no pleats for easy ironing.

“The material is a lot less stiff than a formal dress shirt and will keep you cool on warmer days,” Tirabassi explains. “While this shirt is cut to a shorter length, which means it can be worn untucked, you’ll want to tuck it in when wearing it with a suit. A slim, loose tie is optional here, too. But don’t be caught without a belt if your goal is to appear put together at the office.”

In this outfit, Cole Haan’s two-tone GRANDSERIES Perforated 31mm Belt is a superb option. The perforated nubuck detail adds visual interest, and it complements the Stitchlite™ uppers of your Cole Haan shoes.

To carry all your daily essentials, like a laptop, water bottle, and notepad, complete the look with an office-friendly work bag—not a backpack (you’re not in high school anymore). Cole Haan’s ZERØGRAND All-Day Tote fits the bill.

“The camo breaks up the solid color of the suit with a fun, edgy pattern,” Tirabassi says. “It’s way cooler than a regular briefcase, but still a professional accessory to carry to your desk.”

The sleek, sturdy bag is constructed with water-resistant nylon and features double leather handles and a strap for slinging it over your shoulder (plus a back panel of compression-molded EVA foam for added comfort).

“With a business casual outfit like this,” Tirabassi says, “I promise you won’t be missing your work-at-home uniform at all.”
